Okay guys, this is the thread where it becomes official. YAY! This year we've had a lot of interest again, partly from people who missed out last year and partly from those who came last year and loved it. If you didn't hear about last years event do a search and you'll see how much fun we had...

Date: 1st July 2006
Time: Briefing at 12pm (midday :p), get there a bit earlier if you like, but NOT later.
The start time has changed to midday, so it is imperative that you get to the track for 11:45 at the LATEST. Failure to attend the briefing may mean you cannot take part.

Location: Multimap (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=461500&Y=264500&width=500&height=300&gride=461701&gridn=264551&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=pc&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=NN115NH&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=0&out.x=7&out.y=9&scale=10000)
Whilton Mill Ltd,
Whilton Locks,
Nr. Daventry,
Northamptonshire
NN11 5NH.

Cost: £185 per team. A team will consist of 3 people. Thus individuals have to pay £61.67 each. Sorry it's gone up a bit on initial estimates, but that is estimating for you. This is only £1 more than last year, for better karts, more track time, and outdoor too, rather than a grotty indoor circuit, so in terms of value for money this is a massive improvement.

Format: 30 minutes practice, 10 minutes for each driver, followed by a 2 hour race, with appropriate driver changes.

Deposits: We need £20 from each confirmed driver, and this needs to be in by the end of May I think, maybe the first week of June if I'm a bit rude. Cheques to be made payable to Whilton Mill Ltd NOT to me.

Availability: 16 team maximum - that's 48 drivers in all.

Confirmed Drivers/Teams:
I will list people here, with confirmed 'teams' at the top and single drivers below. Single drivers will have to triple up with other single drivers for the event to form a team, so don't worry about signing up if you have no one to be with. Perhaps we can interest the devs in coming, see if they can better 3rd place this year. I'd guess the update tyre and aero physics will give them an advantage.

Teams
It would be helpful if you post which team you want to be in, and who with, so I can do it without reading a million posts each time.

Total Number of Confirmed Drivers: 28/48.
Minimum number of TEAMS required for the event to go ahead as above: 10
In the event we do not make the numbers we will have to come up with a contingency plan.

Deposits Recieved, and Total Value
20 = £280 (and no one has made it out to me yet, so well done! :p)

Hotels:
Last year a lot of people used this one - Ibis Hotels (http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/fichehotel/gb/ibi/3657/fiche_hotel.shtml)
A bit of googling turned up this (http://www.theaa.com/hotels/27068.html), this (http://www.theaa.com/hotels/2189.html) and this (http://www.theaa.com/hotels/2197.html)

Night Life: We need somewhere to drown our sorrows afterwards (and talk about Saubers), so we'll try and get a bit of info here. There is also a good chance that we'll meet here earlier in the day for people who want a full day out, before going to the track around midday. Northampton train station is nearby, so it's very likely we can pick people up from there if required (though I can only do one person at a time).

Meeting Place: Will has suggested we meet in the same place, but this might change if we get a better option. Around 10am onwards I guess. They serve food from 12 - 3.
Note: No alcohol BEFORE karting.

To sign up, post your interest (I will edit this periodically). I'll PM you my details regarding cheques, as it's easier if one person sends lots than lots of people send one. I will mark you down as paid when I recieve your cheque, but there's no urgent rush about paying just yet.

This thread isn't for generally karting chat, but for arranging details and asking questions specifically about the day. The general chat thread can be found HERE (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=7513)

Hope to see you there, and I wish you the best of luck.

Please note: There will be a LOT of people signing up to this, more than I can keep track of on a forum (even with my posting habits). So if you want my address to post the cheque to (not made out to me, I must stress that), then please PM me. Without a PM it is likely I will miss you out for too long, and you're place may be at risk.

Sadly Victor has informed me that neither Scawen, Eric or himself will be coming to the event this year. No reason was given, so it's either too much work, or they're still upset at seeing how ugly we are in real life. However, it can still be a great event - the devs were, duting most of the day, just other LFSers, and not the only reason it was a massive success. So keep on coming, and make the devs regret their decision.

Right I'm prepared to commit to filming it,editing the footage and producing a DVD which I will distribute for the cost of a disc and the postage. I'll also provide stills and have a night on the town with everyone. I will not be karting myself, and may need a lift from Northampton station, depending on whether or not I can con a mate into coming to hold another camera.

I may be able to get access to a "bullet cam" which could be used to shoot onboard footage from the kart itself. However most racing circuit owners get a little antsy when people mention such things, so could Aryton [who I understand knows the circuit owner] please sound him out about the use of one on his circuit.

The bullet cam is around the size of a mini maglite and plugs into a standard DV camcorder which records the footage and the sound.
What we normally do is put the DV camcorder in a car's footwell, however in the case of karting we might have to look at having the driver wear a rucksack with containing the camcorder instead. The bullet cam has to connect to the standard camcorder with a cable. I suspect that taping the cable along the kart safely and out of the driver's way would be the limiting factor.

Given that I'll be there but not driving I wonder if Tristan/Aryton could find out if I'll get charged on the gate or something?

A rucksack wouldn't be safe. In the event of a roll a kart does not have a roll cage ... this is because of the update physics patch: The driver leaves the kart and continues on foot until forward velocity is expelled.

You would have to attach the camera entirely to the kart or an adapted helmet. If you could mount it on the nassau panel you'd be in luck.

Ok, im in.

Smax, u would not be charged at the gate, and it would be great to have a DVD recorded. do u do this sort of thing for a living? We will need more than 1 camera, which is where fordie comes in, and it would be very nice to have 3.

Smax, if u arrive a bit early i can get u together with the circuit owner and discuss the best/safest places to film. it would be good to have a wide variety of shots. Ill have a word with Dan (the guy in charge) about onboard cameras. as u might know we had one last year but we put the computer in the wrong place so we didnt get good footage. and it had no sound.

NOTE TO WHOEVER WANTS TO CONFIRM
If you PM tristan he can send you his address and contact details so you can send the £20 deposit to him. Post in this thread too

pls be reminded that this isnt a discussion thread. last years 'official no discussion' thread got to around 14 pages i think :p

I so wanna say yes yes yes, count me in too . . . Bu tI can't commit until I know what I'm working, which could well be the week before . . DOH.

But If I ain't working I might just come up and have a butchers at everyone and put faces to 'nicks'. Got family up in Northhampton anyhow.

So keep us posted about a meeting point and you never know, you might see a Funnybear up there too. And see why his full nick (Funnylookingteddybear) is a little more apt . . . lol

Aryton....no I don't do this sort of thing for a living yet

I have a BA Hons in Design for digital media :- think digital graphic design with photography and film thrown in...or at least I will have my BA by next Friday....

Vidoe cameras wise I may be able to provide up to 3, the more folk who can bring one the better, if they don't mind giving me the tapes I'll edit it all up and burn it no problem.

I use a Canon 350D 8mp SLR still camera which gives me a semi-pro result, but it does have a point and shoot mode. Anyone's welcome to steal it off me and take some shots with it, since I only have two hands

I would be in guys, but a lack of a partner and some recent events regarding LFS have severely upset me and I'm considering my LFS future.

Hope you have a great time and I'm gutted I won't becoming as I want/wanted to play an active role in this community.

Mate...what karts are you gonna use and is it on the arrive and drive circuit of the full MSA one? I love the full circuit and could do with a practice, cause I'm gonna do a Club100 endurance there on Sept 2nd :D

Could be persuaded to join you all if I can be part of the karting1 team ;) LOL I'll bring my RedBull suit and everything :D Haha

Ah what the hell...go on :) I'll come ;) Will be interesting to see if I can get the Pros to go full throttle through the first two corners :P I'll sort out some kind of conformation tomorrow evening when I get a chance to find my chequebook and have finished earning the money to pay for it (2-9pm at Starbucks tomorrow :P) I'll probably just become a moving target for everyone to try and take off but what have I got to lose apart from my repuation and life! Haha.

Whilton is also my nearest MSA track so it'll only take me 40mins to get there :D

ayrton senna 87

If you'd notice guys, I have added Eric to the official list at the top of this thread. Will's list was a quick copy and paste of the one from the other thread, so it can be ignored now, maybe even deleted.

So far we have no confirmation or otherwise from Scawen, Victor or Eric, but don't give up hope yet, I only asked on Friday. Chill people.

LOL...Club100 TKMs most definitely aren't flat out through it or the last corner either. A guy who raced with us last year who used to race Super1 tried the last corner and did a rather fantastic 360 and managed to *just* keep the thing firing and carry on! Haha. I think even he was quite surprised! Somone less experience also tried it and flipped his kart on the wood chippings!

ayrton senna 87
8th May 2006, 21:30
on a very good day, the last corner can be SO close to flat out, that its just a barely noticable lift. on the day that i went in june 2004, the 1st 2 corners were flat out.

although i think they have 115cc motors in club 100 now?

when i went my best was a 44.09, next best was 44.93 and barnaby pittingale (who u probably know) did a 44.05 while doin some kart testing. i worked for quite a few club 100 meetings and ive never seen such times since.

ArosaMike
8th May 2006, 21:57
To get it cheap we always run in the 'off' season so it's usually cold or raining! LOL Fastest time this year (in Feb) was 45.24 in my race with me doing a 45.98. Should be a few tenths faster than that now as I improved from Warden Law onwards (with my 1st at Buckmore where I set the 4th fastest lap in the wet on slicks :P).

Yeah I know of Barnaby. His driving style is nuts buy fast. Sidways everywhere! He spun it in front of everyone at Buckmore though! Everyone cheered! Haha :P

8th May 2006, 22:47
Before and after we will be going to the pub, and we are tying to sort out some 'surprises' at the moment. generally just socialising with fellow sim nutters!

last years event was really enjoyable, all the way from 9am to 3am the next day (thanks to shifty) and i have no doubt that this year will be as good if not better, since we have the capacity for almost 50 racers, and we already have about 7 or 8 spectators and camera men.

it was especially good to meet GP4Flo, 3J, Victor and Da Hoe since they are so commited they decided to travel a couple of thousand miles!

Assuming everyone in the list currently (including the unconfirmed people) come, that's 31 people. The maximum amount of drivers is 48, so come on guys. We can have a few more yet (17).

All you need to do is be able to get to Northampton area on July 1st for about midday. People are coming from all over already, so lifts might be possible, and it WILL be huge fun. You will meet people you never thought you would, and make friendships that will make racing with them so much more fun.

At £60 per person, for about an hours driving or something, it's very good value for money compared to almost any other karting event in the UK.

Simon Savage
10th May 2006, 11:49

Okey Dokie. Hotel booked - Ibis for one night, sharing with Chris. I know where I'm going, I know when I going, and it's all looking good. What's happening afterwards? Last year Will and I stayed around a bit, and we went to watch the karting. We also had a go on the crappy little rent-a-kart track next to it, which was a lot of fun, but we were doing silly things. Anyone up for a second session? Chris and I might be up for it (maybe at the indoor place we used last year?).

ayrton senna 87
11th May 2006, 20:38
haha sounds good, a little indoor event the day after, for those with money to burn. i hope they have an open GP on the day after then!

for those who dont know, an open GP is against 30 or 40 public people, so its pretty easy to win...

Bob Smith
11th May 2006, 20:40
Heh, can't get blisters like that again. See previous comments. But I don't mind doing something a little lighter the next day. A beer and more steak for lunch sounds good, then off home early afternoon? :)

Tbh I might get sick of you if I stay too long. :p

tristancliffe
11th May 2006, 20:46
The only problem is we need more people to confirm this event. We have 14 confirmed drivers, and 31 in total.

To go ahead we really need 10 teams - that's 30 CONFIRMED drivers. If people WANT to do 2 man teams the price will obviously be shared between just two people, and become £90 per person (which is quite high, when £60 is pretty reasonable).

So don't be shy - sign up, and make this event happen. If we can get more interested people in the next couple of weeks then we'll all be okay!

Count me in, I am v quick in these karts & even held a lap record at a track not far from newquay cornwall.

I have no prefference to team except for some drivers with karting skills/experience.

p.s. what is the format for the day? is a 3 hour enduro or lots of smaller sprint races? it does not say anywhere!

Hi All,

Just want to add my 2cents in here. This is a fantastic event. Last Years was just totally awesome. You get to meet people that you usually swear at your monitor to, and also some very nice people :D Obviously the karting is the highlight of the event, but the evening is something not to be missed.

Just make sure your armed with a camara. Also, if Tristan or will ask you for your mobile number DONT GIVE IT as they will only ring you at 2am looking for a room :ices_rofl:

Seriously though, not an event to be missed in the UK. In Germany they have the GC, and Intel Finals nights. Its nice to have actually something in the UK that is LFS orientated.

I am a loner, so I will need to team up with two others if anybody wants to arrange this with me before the event. I will be coming down from the Huddersfield area, so if anyone around there needs a lift, just PM me and we can arrange something.

My mate Marcus who works as a marshall on the small track says he would like to go. He's only got the demo and says he understands that people with a licence has to come first. However he says if there are spaces left near the deadline that could be filled and there are no more takers then he would love to go.

I realise this could open the flood gates to other people wanting to bring freinds, but he wanted me to give him a mention if you still have places to fill near the end of may.

Bob Smith
17th May 2006, 12:40
I dunno, I don't think having a license is over important (I mean anyone who's a demo racer and comes, will quickly get convinced by the others no doubt).

But since it's an LFS meet, they should be somewhat regular LFS racers, if online in the demo. I mean it's nice for them to be forum regulars so that we all "know" them, but not everyone has time to come here all the time (except Tristan, who obviously makes time).

At the moment there are still loads of spaces free and we still don't have enough confirmed drivers for this to even happen, so at this point I can't see one of the organising bods turning people away.

tristancliffe
17th May 2006, 13:49
I turned people away at the start, thinking it was going to be as popular as last time, but that isn't the case (I think a lot of people have issues with July 1st, a date I didn't choose by the way). So yeah, as long as they do actually play LFS a fair bit (so we can chat to them about it), even if it's just the demo, then I guess it's okay.

I'd rather have the event go ahead with just 20 'licenced' people and a few demoers. than not go ahead at all (partly cos I've booked hotels and stuff, and others have booked days off work).

I'm getting tempted to put my name down for this :scratchch

Trouble is, i'm no longer the testosterone fuelled, well toned, sprightly youth I used to be ! 35 years of hard labour down the mines since birth has put paid to that (ok, it's the fags, kids, takeaways and trying to make a living that have probably done it).

However, if I could join up with a couple of people my own generation, say 28 - 45, i'd be very tempted to take part (i'm not ageist or anything).

I used to work at an indoor karting track organising the races, doing the track walk, safety talk etc.. and we did a few outside events including twin engine outdoor stuff, so I have quite alot of karting experience (not ultra competetive stuff granted).

So, anyone willing to make up a team of old farts ?

C'mon, convince me :thumb:

danowat
18th May 2006, 18:25
Well, many of us from the last event were of the "older generation", myself included, I am 32.

Chances are I will be going someway or another, doing my DA motorbike test soon and should be getting my bike very shortly after that, failing that I might be able to bum a lift from Tristan.

I came last in the previous event, probably due to my size, but since then I have been hitting the gym in a big way, and lost at least 2 stone so I should be a tad faster next time ;)

So, if I go there will be at least one from your generation.

Dan,

Not sure about a team of old farts, but there will be old farts there (unless they've lied about their ages), so don't fret. As long as you still have the strength to press the pedals in your weary legs then you'll be fine.

I've tried and got 2 people to come, trying to get a third (only so many of my mates play LFS or I'd try more ;)). None of the Dutch guys from MRNL seem to be able to make it (but they're welcome to prove me wrong), I'm done recruiting.

Thanks

Edit: Sorry just saw that there was another threat to post in. :(

tristancliffe
25th May 2006, 11:58
I had a chat with Will about this yesterday on the phone.

At the moment we don't have enough people to make the event go ahead as planned (though we can pay more and have 2 drivers per team, and thus more track time). Therefore it would be wise to open the meeting to other people, just to make up the numbers.

However, if they are kart racers then there is a good chance they will be too fast for most of us non-karters, which will lower the fun for everyone else. One solution would be to put proper kart drivers with the slowest LFS drivers, to cancel out any advantages/disadvantages.

Also, if they aren't LFS players how are they going to join in and socialise. We'll all be there chatting away merrily, but non-LFS drivers will just stand in little groups and not be part of it. Thus I'd much rather have genuine LFS drivers, even if they are just demo racers. But if a non-LFS driver pretends to be a demo racer (i.e. signs up here, or does a couple of laps in the demo so he can vaguely chat about it), does that make it fair.

It's a dilemma if you ask me. We need more people, but the whole point of this is for the LFS community, not 'pro' karters who've never played LFS.

Perhaps we can have a few opinions on this? Can anyone pursuade someone else to go? There are no age restrictions, as long as you can reach the pedals.

Bob Smith
25th May 2006, 12:08
Like I said the other day, I've got one more guy that's interested, waiting to get a decision from him. I might be able to get more, but they won't be LFS players, although they'd know people and would be up for chatting and stuff. They'd just shy away from in-depth discussions such as "what's your favourite circuit", "what line do you take on the ovaly bit on KY GP Long" and "my car does x instead of y, what z should I adjust in the garage?" Although all are welcomed to chip in to the "why is Bob so awesome?" discussion. :p

Perhaps more importantly, why are we struggling for numbers this time, is it the date, the lack of devs, or people are bored of Northampton (even though we've only been the once, and that was a different circuit).

anttt69
25th May 2006, 13:37
do u need 30 drivers before this event takes place?

tristancliffe
25th May 2006, 14:22
We need 30 drivers to have 10 teams (the minimum) of three drivers. But with less than 30 drivers some people can pay more and have a two man team. But I think 30 drivers would be the ideal minimum, up to a maximum of 48.

Last year we'd have had no problem with 48 drivers, so who knows why we haven't had the same response this year. Maybe it's just not 'new' anymore doing an UK LFS Karting meet.

Bob Smith
25th May 2006, 16:43
Last year we'd have had no problem with 48 drivers.
I dunno, we certainly made 20 no problem, and probably could have filled 30 spaces, but 48? I don't think that many people would have really commited to it. Plus we'd never have all got in that pub. :D

So what's the consensus? I suspect most people would be more than willing two drive as teams of two, but obviously the extra cost (another £30?) is obviously gonna put people off (although it's worth it!).

Chris_Kerry
25th May 2006, 16:48
It is difficult, I'd probably suggest keeping it the way it is. Although I'd not mind if we changed the teams to 2. I think it's a matter of that is what people signed up too originally.

How about adding a poll to this thread?

ayrton senna 87
25th May 2006, 18:55
it costs like £2 more than last year for a team of 3. and i doubt many people would want to drive for 1 and a quarter hours each to be honest.

t1ger
25th May 2006, 19:27
I want to go to this event so much that I would (and can!) put another £30 in and have a team of 2. However, we run the risk of scaring some people off if we make it a 2 per team event. Maybe we could make it a mix of 2 and 3 person teams? Or is this too unfair then? Its not as if anything is at stake, its only for fun after all!

I know in a 2 man team each driver will be driving for 1 and a quarter hours, but it doesn't have to be all at the same time, it can be 20-30min stints which should be OK.

I am sad that there is not the same interest as last year, and I am also sad that the Devs are not going, but I do not want this to put anybody off coming...

@tristan - lippy has confirmed but it is not updated in the first post!

Also there are potentially two other drivers in danowat (travel arrangements dependant) and bozo who I asked and is waiting to confirm his arrangements.

Other than that, I can do no more...except join servers and start asking random people if they are in the UK and want to come...

Tim

ayrton senna 87
25th May 2006, 19:38
yes, same as last year, drivers can choose how many people they want in their teams. the more teams the better! its more fun with 15 karts than 10.

Its no advantage to run 2 people, and unless u do a bit of excercise its a bit of a disadvantage, but believe me, driving these karts (which are alot faster than the indoor ones) is alot less demanding than the indoor ones. so definatly if people want only 2 drivers, thats fine.

even 1 driver would be ok. its up to u.
aslong as we get 10 teams then its worthwhile for the circuit.

No prob, but please don't forget to send those cheques, as without a deposit from you we might turn up on the day and not have a booking.

I really don't want to make my address public knowledge, so if you can PM me, or any of the people who have already paid, you can get my address that way. You no longer need to write your username on the back of the cheque as I'm back in dreary Norfolk and get my post straight away.

I really hope you can come. The time has come to allow ANYONE to come, because I'd rather have an event with 90% LFSers and a few unknown strangers than no event at all. So if you know someone who wants to come please let me know by posting below. LFS players have priority, of course, but I will no longer be disallowing non-LFSers.

If you do get a non-LFSer to come, please make the play the demo (or let them play on your unlocked version if they come round) for an hour or two so we can chat about it :D

Take care all.

jeez chris hope you get another job soon, ive been wanting to quit mine for ages but will finally when i go to uni.

How many 2 man teams/ extra teams will we need until we have enaugh money?

tristancliffe
5th June 2006, 16:51
It's not money that's needed. It's teams. We need 10 teams (although we can have more than that if it was popular enough)

That could be made up of 10 three man teams (30 drivers)
Or 10 two man teams (20 drivers)
Or a combination (say 3 two man teams, and 7 three man teams).

I haven't looked, but MAYBE we can juggle the existing teams about a bit so that the rich people who can afford two man teams go together, and the less-rich people wanting three men teams can group together? The downside is that LFS teams might be able to go together in this format, but is that a big problem at the end of the day??

As for two-men team having an advantage (through less driver swaps) I don't think it'll help much. You might spend less time in the pits, but you'll spend longer on the track, and so you'll be a lot more knackered. If people want we could have a minimum number of driver swaps, so two men teams just have more stints rather than longer stints?

Feedback people - let's work together to keep this show on the road. I'll be running a poll in the near future (maybe just after the event) to find out ROUGHLY what time of year would be best to hold this event in future. It seems as though the chosen date, July 1st, isn't ideal for a large proportion of people. But that's for next year (or this year if we postpone :().

Maim people if you have to, just bring them along (and FORCE them to play LFS if they haven't, so we can chat).

Skilled karters will be penalised, probably by pairing them with a slow driver(s) so we don't have runaway teams due to experienced people.

Currently winning the prize for neatest writing goes to Chris Kerry. However, judging by the cheque I'd guess his parents wrote the envelope, so he's disqualified :p

Tristancliffe, if its 10 teams you need, then if me and Simon Savage join together, then that makes 10 does it not? so you would be sorted unless there's further complications. So as long as the 2 remaining at vmax are happy then, problem solved? :thumb: :scratchch

tristancliffe
6th June 2006, 19:59
Well spotted!!!

I've gone through, and assigned unassigned people to random teams, so I think:

1. We have 10 teams
2. People who want/need 3 man teams have them
3. People who want 2 man teams have them.

Downside: Some of you might not be in the team you had hoped for.

Someone pester AndyC. Who has his phone number? Someone must do. Or MSN? Get an answer out of him, it might all hinge on him.

Now, some of you might be thinking that's not fair, or I wanna be in x team. Well, to be honest, I don't give a flying flubber which team you're in. I'd quite like to be in a two man team (though I'd also like to be with Jack, and he needs a three man team to justify it so I'm happy with that), so maybe on the day we can swap and share team mates around as long as people are happy and we maintain 10 teams.

But:

I THINK THE EVENT IS ON!!!!

Feel free to carry on recruiting and sending cheques. I'm gonna tot up the cheques in a minute, and see how many more I need to make the deposit the necessary amount.

tristancliffe
6th June 2006, 20:19
Nope sorry, they said they can't make it this year. Hopefully they'll do the honourable thing and put a couple of extra hours into LFS development instead :p

As Tim says below, the devs not coming is disappointing, but we can't have it our way every year, and their presence was only a small part of last years success and fun. If you assume that last year was 100%, then without the devs it'll still be 95%, and thats before you take into account the increase track time, the better track, the better (faster) karts and (hopefully) the better weather. And you each get a cookie. What more could you reasonably ask for.

So, if we get just one more person (I've more convincing to do this weekend), will they still be able to race? I mean, will they fit into an exisiting team by turning one of the 2 man teams back into a 3 man team? Or will it be a pointless excercise unless we get 3 more people?

Tristan,

Would it be OK if another member of our team (SR) came along?

That would mean 4 of us would attend, which could equate to 2, 2 man teams.

I also have another possible person who would be interested if his money situation is Ok - TBA

Would he be able to come? that would then mean 5 of us, so a 3 man, 2 man team would be possible.

We all play LFS so there are no 'friends' in this list, all team members.

I know it's late in the day and would understand if they could not come along, but if numbers are needed then we may be able to help.

To sum up - We have 1 definite who wants to come and 1 who is unsure (will know by weekend).

Thanks, looking forward to the event :)

Bob Smith

Yep, I'll know for definate by Monday if I'll be able to get any extra people to come along.

tristancliffe

Sure. I'm going to send off the cheques I have (hopefully enough of a deposit for the event, I don't actually know), so I'll let you know if I need further cheques sending (until I say, assume I do need them).

As for more people, yeah bring them along. The more the merrier. I think we're all mature enough to adjust teams if it turns out one person is teamless or something, so I'm not evn remotely concerned by it. If the worst comes to the worst I'll pay twice, and be in two teams, and make sure the teams change drivers at the same time :p  :knackered:

Another cheque in the morning post, this time dSRC Ed's. And I got a PM from someone yesterday referred to me by Bogey, so that's another one. Plus the 3 or 4 people that might be joining us thanks to a late but fruitful recruitment drive by other antendees.

So I think it's safe to say that nothing can go wrong now. Book your hotels, arrange your transport, and reserve your beer money, cos we're going Karting.

Right, I'm going to phone Will (his PC is broken again, and he can't view this thread which explains why he's gone quiet, so if you want to get in touch with him or are awaiting a PM reply let me know and I'll forward it to him) and get everything fully confirmed.

Two more cheques recieved today: One from Marcus, and one from a P R Lipscombe. Is that you Lippy, or is it someone else? I thought I ought to check before assuming someone has paid when they haven't.

We now have £320 of deposits (16 people, 13 cheques), so I think we now have enough to send off to Whilton. Therefore, if you haven't sent your cheques then don't bother. If they are in the post already don't worry, I won't send them off until tomorrow, so they have another day to arrive.

Ok, So I'm going to book my train tickets down to Northampton this week.

Virgin Trains seems the cheapest option from Derby, but I haven't got a clue what I have to buy. I don't use the trains much.

If I buy an open return ticket (£29), does that mean that I can travel on any train back to Derby or will it have to be specific trains. I've got no problems setting the journey to Northampton, I have to go via Birmingham, Rugby and Nuneaton for the 3 stop version or just Birmingham and Rugby for the 2 stop. It's the return journey I'm struggling with.

The reason I'm thinking of getting a open return is in case any of us stop around on the Sunday. What are people thinking of doing?

Smax
12th June 2006, 12:00
As long as you don't blatantly take the p*ss you can ride any train or that's heading in remotely the right direction, unless it's one that offers a different type of service to what's printed on your ticket.

P.M me before you buy a ticket I'm coming down from Derby too, I'll see if I can fix you a lift down, although I'm likely to be coming back on the Saturday night, so I doubt I can help you out on the way home.

chris york is a legend. i used to race against him when i was a noobie in TKM! and work with him. i didnt like him at first, but hes a legend now!!!

about the rage buggy, chris well tell u about that but heres my story...

I was drivin it back and i couldnt decide weather to go left or right of one of the poles near the national, i decided to late and sideswiped it and took it out of the ground. i put the buggy back and hoped no1 would notice. a few days later i got a call from Ian and i was like SHIT and i had to go and be 'severly reprimanded infront of my mother'

lol..... so pete dont like me.. Im testing with my m8 on wednesday 21st, then along with tristan on sat 24th, both in senior TKM. might see u there then.. im number 28. (well on sat tristan will be)

and yea the karts are really even, Dan Parker and Chris maintain them really well. so theres only a tenth or 2 difference!! apart from the tyre wear is different on some of them

To be fair this TKM thing was arranged before the LFS karting meet was sorted (edit: even mentioned). It was when I got the F3 car on the runway over Christmas, and Will said I should come and try his kart. I offered to try and get him a go in the F3 car but he turned me down for some reason (he values his health and his wallet). It's not sneaky practice (though of course it won't do any harm). And I'm paying as much to do it as I am for the LFS meet, and thats just to cover Will's costs. There is also a £35 noob fee. So it's not a quick practice to gain an advantage, it's an expensive way of testing a proper 2-stroke kart which just so happens to be at the same track (cos it's local for Will).

So I see. I would remove tristancliffe_is_batty from the cookie list, but he probably lacks the intelligence to eat one anyway. I can't wait to see how this develops. I bet he thinks I'll be annoyed or scared, but to be honest it's nearly as hilarious as the stupid ricer turbo mod I'm doing at work.

ok fellas ive given all your cheques in today and its all sweet

unfortunatly for me, ive busted my ribs BADLY in testing today, so i cant drive a 2 stroke kart for 2 months, and i may even be unable to do the race on july 1st if i find my ribs are too bad in the practise session..... :(

Madman, just remember what you looked like 5 years ago. Quite the tubby, eh? OK, so now I'm the fat one. But I like my cookies. Everyone has to eat crisps around Madman and go "mmm mmm", and dribble (a shame TAA can't make this one). :D

@Will - bah.

LOL Bob... they say the best way to defend is to attack.... So, u traying to say i have a crisps problem?

and me being tubby 5 years ago can be looked at as being due to body growth :p while you are now beyond the fase of really growing (well apart from sideways)

Man thats bad luck Will still would like to see you at the meeting maybe try the practace session and if it hurts too much then dont race.
Or race for a shorter time than the others, would be a huge shame if you couldnt come :-(

didnt DC race in spain with two cracked ribs? not saying its a good idea though, he was a loony for doing it.

yea, i would race with it, it would hurt but i could still drive (with very bad concentration around right handers) but if i dont let it rest i wont be able to return to 2 stroke racing, and thats my main priority. Also i might have a condition which could give me a collapsed lung if im not careful.....

im gunna be bored with my week off work but ill deffo be along to the meeting.

maybe one less, i could pack the seat with foam and see how it goes. pro karts dont skip, and thats what does the damage. ill probs do praccy and see how it goes... man it sucks :S

Yup, Will just posted what I said. I have your cheque sitting on my desk at work.

TKM's - where to start...

Firstly - my car isn't big enough for all the stuff (like a kart trolley).
Secondly - the chassis is, to quote Will "f*****g badly f****d up"

So we arrive at Whilton at about 9am. We then, using my tools and the jack from my car, proceed to build the kart up - wheels, sprokets, engine, chain etc. Getting is right took a bit of time, as I've not played with a kart before and Will's rib weren't doing him an favours.

Missed the first session as we weren't ready. Got out for the second 10 minute session. Bump started it with Will's friend, and off I went. It's so fecking quick. I've driven some fast cars in my time, but this was, relatively, the fastest thing yet. F1 drivers talk of thinking about the following corner rather than the one they are in, but I was still thinking about the last corner. I was reacting to the kart rather than predicting it. And it was oversteer city for me, although we later diagnosed it as aggressive steering inputs from me overloading the chassis and bucking the rear wheel in the air suddenly. I spun once after about 4 laps and stalled. Will was about to come and get me when I hopped out, lifted the back of the kart and started it by myself. A few laps later, maybe 3, I spun again but this time on an uphill bit. I tried to start it, but it didn't catch, tried again and my legs collapsed. I was so tired, not just physically but mentally too, but I hadn't realised until the adrenaline started to wear off...

So endeth the first session.

We then missed the next session as Will and Mickey left to pick up a trolley, leaving me to struggle with the chain tension with the kart balanced on a car sissor jack. I succeeded, sort of (it was a bit tight), but considering the kart fell off the jack twice trapping my arms underneath the chassis/engine (yes, both arms, and lifting is really hard with your hands palm down underneath something like that whilst on your knees) I felt I did okay. I then had a quick snooze whilst I waited.

By the time they got back it was lunch, so we had a drink, chatted about what I was doing wrong (steering and braking mainly :p). Then we kicked the tyres and set off to the dummy grid for Mickey to have a session. He was okay once the tyres warmed up, and was keeping pace with some of them, but a wire came off the coil and he stopped in front of us. At least the kart was driveable, meaning the problems were caused by me.

Another 'break' then back to the grid for my second go. Only this time the head marshall decided he knew my face, and that I was an experienced karter, so he sent me to the front. Before my first go, without knowing what to expect, I was only a bit nervous. Now, at the front, with 25 karters 5 seconds a lap quicker than me behind me I was crapping myself. At the start I let as many through as I could, got barged off my someone who thought I was being slow on purpose, and spent the whole lap on the marbles. At the last turn of the out lap I got a big oversteer moment, overcorrected and went head first into a pile of woodchippings. Again Will thought it was over. But I leapt out, restarted (took two goes becase I missed the throttle pedal the first time :p) and carried on :D Three corners later I spun again, this time terminally as there was too much traffic for me to restart :( At this stage I was pretty convinced that instead of me being slow because of 90% me and 10% kart, the kart had got worse and was now the main factor. It was SO oversteery. Not even slightly like the first session.

Tail between my legs (although I didn't get heckled by spectators this time) I skulded off to the pits.

Third and final go - in the pits, this time back at the back where the pressure was off me. Started the kart, went off taking it easy to warm the tyres and get used to it again, and I spun by the third corner. Grrr, so I restarted AGAIN (getting good at this now), and carried on. Kart was still very very oversteery, even though I was being much less aggressive with the controls, but I was just about hanging on to it now (I'm still convinced something happened to the chassis between my first and second go, probably lifting it onto the trolley). Then the black/orange flag was waved at me, and I saw the airbox trumpet lying in the track - it had been knocked off as I jumped in whilst leaving the pits. So, tail even further between my legs, I headed slowly to the pits (but not so slow to oil up Will's engine).

So, it was overwhelming, tiring, embarrasing, fun and boring all in the same day. Did I learn anything from it - only to be more commanding of the brake pedal and smoother on the steering. Will it turn me from mid-grid karter to winner next weekend - no way, I'll be 0.2 seconds quicker than I was AT BEST, probably less than 0.1. Was it worth it (the day cost me about £130 once I paid Will £60 for engine expenses, travelled there, eaten and drunk, and got back) - probably not, but that's my fault. Would I go again - hell yes!

I just need time to get used to it. Prokarts are much much slower and are positively tame in comparison - it's actually a pretty poor example of what proper karts are about. I now have a bit more respect for karters than I did, although I'm convinced a lot of the engineering is done 'the way it's always done' rather than anyone daring to be different, and I'm sure I could think of one or two improvements given time and experience.

See you next week for the concluding episode of "What will Tristan hit this time when he spins".

Edit: Did I mention that the seat was about 10 sizes too small for me, and I had to sit diagonally in it to fit (which is why I look odd in Will's photos).

I totally know what you mean when you talk about the acceleration. I remember laughing outloud in my helmet constantly for 3 laps the first time I drove one :P People who aren't karters scoff and smirk when I tell them that 2 stroke karts are fast, but in all honesty, the only car I've ever driven that felt the same was an Elise 111R.

I was amazed just how different a TKM was to the pros I'd only driven before. The throttle response was instant (resulting in some rather embarassing spins the first time) and they require so much more of a delicate touch than a Pro. You'll be pleased to know that you don't loose the ability to drive a Pro though :P They just seem insanely easy forever after! LOL

It's only now after 3 seasons of Club100 that I can honestly say I'm fully at home in a TKM and 'on the pace'. I've steadily improved by half a second every year until I was able to win my first race at Buckmore halfway through the season :P If you're anything like me....you'll get rapidly better just after you start driving them a lot....then you'll stop improving and it'll seem like you're never going to find the final few tenths. Then for some reason all of a sudden it starts to seem really easy and you can inexplicably go a hell of a lot faster :)

its a shame that you didnt get those final sessions, because you didnt get a chance to try to be smoother, you hardly got any laps on warm tyres after the 1st session :(

like i said tristan, you can see how TINY things affect the chassis, and a broken bumper and a crack in the chassis is a MASSIVE thing that affects the kart a huge amount, so obviously it will do funny things, especially when you overdrive it.

it looked to me, like i said at the end of the day that the chassis crack got bigger. maybe it happened when we bumpstarted it for your session???? also, remember we pumped up the front right tyre, so that would lift the inside rear wheel more. im going to take the engine apart so i can see if it seized or something.

like i said on PMs when we were organising it, it would have been better to go on a wednesday. imagine how many sessions u could have done!

but u will be ALOT faster on pro karts. not 0.2, try 0.5, aslong as u are smooth and drive to the limit. u might not think so now but after u drive one and get out and see your times u will be surprised at how close to the leaders times u are.

maybe not close to midget mickey tho...
