Doesn't crash here Honey. What settings are you using to make it crash? And why is it you that always has these problems - I'd say something is seriously wrong with your PC, perhaps try reinstalling (perhaps a second OS) and see if these problems you have reoccur?

honestly (nothing personal with you tristan) i'm sick of this.
patch S never crashed, now patch U crash randomly crash and i reported, should i shut up?

made few tests and crash only occur if:
1- open lfs
2- display online list
3- i push 2 times the back button

the three steps make lfs crash 99% times if i do anything else different no problem til now, so if so it's not important, so for those interested i told how to reproduce the bug.

since everyone seems upset by me reporting problems or bug, i will not post anymore anytime soon so everyone will be more happy i will save my time...because as you say it's always my fault, not lfs'

remember occam's razor principle and think about it... >_>

29th April 2006, 15:08
Well Honey its not a LFS problem. I just did what you said and of course, everything worked just as always. I assume you already told your firewall program that lfs.exe is updated and needs a permission to access the net. Thats the only thing we need to do with every new patch.

tristancliffe
29th April 2006, 15:08
Just tried that EXACTLY honey, and still no crash here. What filters are you running? How many servers can you see? Do you get a crash address, or does it just close.

I'm all for bugs being reported, but when one or two people are constantly having problems whilst the rest of the world doesn't it kind of implies it might be a PC problem not an LFS problem.

Edit: Have now done your three steps 4 times, each with different filters. It's not a reproducable bug at my end. Been doing it windowed.

Martyrdom never helps, so I'd suggest taking some time to cool off and check if your pet hamster bit through cables or if a stray hummingbird is nesting inside your computer case. There are infinite number of things that might have gone wrong with your comp instead of LFS...

hmmm goof point ... ried both neither of the two caused a crash there is a slight delay though after clicking back the second time maybe lfs doesnt recover from whatever it does there on some pcs

works perfectly here. where is the crash address you get? or the dr. watson logs? what filters you use? does reinstalling lfs fix it? how about windows? have you run prime95 or memtest? have you allowed lfs access to internet? can you play lfs online? what components and driver versions is your system made of?

See the problem? YOU should have answered to those questions on your own, just reporting you get a crash isn't very helpful, especially if everybody can't replicate it 100% of the time. besides all this should be in the bug forum.

the new patch set the window while connecting and that was causing the problem, i set it to "NO" and never crashed til now (10 test done).
but it only occurs for the 3 steps i indicated, if i switch to full screen to desktop and viceversa many times after i do something, everything is fine.

i think it has to do with some directx initializations.

Damn :( Hit a "problem" :(
The Welcome message doesn't update when you edit the file (which I wanted to do with a web interface I just wrote to do it). It doesn't when you /reinit the server either. It only updates when you close the server app and restart it.. which means RDC in, find/close, re-start, exit RDC.

I had hoped to be able to use the welcome message to keep people abreast of team events, particular upcoming track configs and relay races etc. I only just realised, now that I've written the web interface, that it doesn't work that way :(

[EDIT] I just realised it's the bans file scenario all over again. LOL! Sorry Scawen!

I upgraded to Patch U, and my computer freezes.
Many times in race it just froze.

Thought it was a hardware issue, but after many frustraiting hours, I installed the T6 and it runs like a dream again.
Have not seen any others with same issue, but thougt i mention it here.

Have not tried installing the patch again.

Maybe I download it again, and try to install it again later today.

Sorry to be bitchin but it gets annoying when trying to do stuff like this.It really takes 5 seconds.

1) Put the zip file in your LFS folder.
2) Right click.
3) Select "extract to here".

EDIT : I'm aware that you're not the only one who finds it confusing, and ends up getting the files in the wrong place. I'm considering a self-updating system for later patches. I wouldn't use it for Test Patches but it could be a good thing for Official Patches. It would download the files and put them in place. All you would have to do is run LFS and click "yes" when it asks you if you want to update.

It's a local problem.
Firstly, switching between fullscreen and windowed is considered unstable by many gfx-manufacturers (though it works on 99,8% of all mashines). You might try a new DX-version.

maybe distributing the patches as sfx files would solve the problem for nowNo, that's no easier to use than a zip file, because you still need to put it in the right place. And most people don't want to run an exe, they would prefer to just extract a zip manually.

So it would cause more problems than it would solve. For me it's just zip files or self updater. I'm not interested in self extracting files, installers, etc.

No, that's no easier to use than a zip file, because you still need to put it in the right place.

dont think so all theyd need to do is brows to their lfs folder and click extract
either way i prefer zips too but it might help some of the less experienced pc users

Quick questions - What does MAX ALPHA OBS mean when online? I just saw that whilst admining the vMax server, but it doesn't seem to have done anything detrimental.

No, that's no easier to use than a zip file, because you still need to put it in the right place. And most people don't want to run an exe, they would prefer to just extract a zip manually.

So it would cause more problems than it would solve. For me it's just zip files or self updater. I'm not interested in self extracting files, installers, etc.
scawen, the only reason why i started playing LFS was because for the longest time i accidentally locked myself out of being able to install stuff, so i couldn't install games, etc. (don't ask me how, it just happened...) and i couldn't reformat because i didn't have an XP CD. so basically lfs was the only game i played because it was the only game i could play, because of the zip... yay scawen!

i dont make sense because im a little tipsy off some green stuff.

So what's the exact difference to the current system?

you dont have to use any zip tools which seems to be too complex for some (including a few devolopers ... has anyone tried unpacking the nkp update to their nkp folder ?)

thanks to witness i'm not a visionary... :D
i have an asus nvidia 6600.
the strange thing i've never had any issue in any game/app when switching fullscreen/windowed and in lfs only occurs if i execute the exact 3 steps i mentioned before, if i do anything else i can switch lfs fullscreen/windowed like a mad and nothing bad happens...definately one of the less important bugs :D

What exact steps?
I have also Asus 6600.
And Using ALT-TAB between fullcreen and windowed mode is not recomended by graphics companies for games because it usuallz works but on some machines it just make weird things.

I guess you "just" installed the patch, instead of a full fresh reinstall. In that case the existing cfg is read and most settings are taken from there, so if the haze effect was disabled before, it's still disalbed now.

If you make a fresh install it will be turned on, but the setting will not be overriden by applying the patch. Atleast that's how I understand it.

This may be a stoopid question, but if I install this patch will I have to re-register the game and use up one of my licenses? I'm a casual gamer at best... I can probably live without the patch. I would, however, like to be able to drive the F1 car during the occasions I play.

I didn't do a thorough search on the subject... I was just kind of hoping someone would be able to provide a quick answer.

Thanks

Yes, you have to unlock the game again after installing the patch. You also have to unlock the game again if you change something on your hardware. Thats how it works. Search this forum. You will find a lot of threads.

And no, you cannot live without the patch! You will not find that much servers hosting the old version. So you can't play online anymore.

patch Q to new versions you need to activate.

patch S / T to U you donīt have to activate S2.

That only takes a few seconds though - it's no big deal. Every month we increase your number of unlocks available, up to a maximum of two. So by using an unlock, you lose... absolutely nothing! :)

Cool... thanks for the help. And actually I have never raced online yet... I'm still on dial-up (it's not even offered in my rural area), so that doesn't weigh on my decision. I'll do it up and probably get back into it more than my wife and kids would like :D

As I've said before, the driver's body should only vanish when you can hardly see it. And that's why I disabled this optimisation on the open top road cars. Just saying you are getting a problem isn't much help at all, because I need to know the specific situations, where a highly visible driver's body is not being drawn.

Scawen I saw this today and saved a replay.

I think it might have to do with the driver's helmet not loading.

I have a replay here and watch from inside my car at the 45 second mark. Put it in slow motion and and use your look left key to watch the car to the LEFT of me. As I pull along side him you can see the driver body, but then occassionaly it would dissapear. While I was playing online, I noticed this when I pressed look left. I suppose this is the player that I could not load the helmet for in the beginning. That might be the problem? Either way, I hope this helps. (Oh and I was using a custom view (roof cam)). So this driver was only right beside me, it wasn't far away ;)

OH, and another bug I found while doing this. When the player's suit was invisible, I PAUSED it. When I paused it, I started pressing my look left keys and nothing happened. The view would be 'frozen' to the front view and whenever I pressed the button to look left, the top rear-view mirror would dissapear. Kind of wierd. (Basically just pause the game, and try to look left and right in custom view, it does not work). So it was hard to post a screenshot.

Tweaker
4th May 2006, 21:41
And here is a screenshot showing it. While taking this screenshot, the driver was only invisible when the car was showing, but if I put Forces view on, the driver was visible.

It just had to do with the User LOD. I put mine down around .80 and the driver body would disappear at certain points of a turn when in chase view. It only disappears when it is a certain distance away from the camera depending on the User LOD. I cranked it up to 1.00 and the body is visible all the time from what I can tell.

At any User LOD below .80, the body is invisible in chase view all the time.

My User LOD has always been 1.00. I tested it with my replay, changing the amount, and it didn't help. It was always dissapearing for me. Maybe it is another option connected with the LOD.

The only other thing I can think of affecting the LOD is the "Screen width affects LOD" option. Try switching that on/off, because if you run anything different than 1024x768 then this option modifies the LOD, too.

FOV 80š and LOD 1.00
- and like allready stated,
its when the camera in tv view get more than a certain distance away.
...in the single seater cars its working fine though.

-another thing... sometimes it seems like the suit is "changing" when it incloses a certain distance in tv view.

Yes, unextract the LFS U .exe from the upgrade or install zip (that you should still have lying around somewhere - else get the smallest update from the liveforspeed website).

Edit: bah, thought this was the U8 thread. You can downgrade to an older version, say patch Q... but you won't be able to race online, and the cars will handle different. So, erm, anyone?

BuddhaBing
26th June 2006, 05:53
I think the latest version posted for download at the main site http://www.liveforspeed.net/?page=downloads is version U, so you should be able to download the latest version listed and use the LFS.exe from that.
