View Full Version : Is it normal for AI to drive into walls?

I was trying to train the AI last night on South City Sprint 2, and most of them always hit the inner wall at turn 3. The MRT do this alot. I've tested other cars as well and they're not as bad. So much for training the MTR's on my fav track :(

i've heard the ai coding hasnt been updated since early s1... so dont really expect anything from the ai.

Driving "into" walls you say ??

The AI gets better the more laps they drive. The best way to train is if they are all in different cars as it forces them to overtake etc.
Just make sure you select End Race and not restart. This makes sure their AI files get updated.

ROFL, how did you do that?!

Take a look at the manual, there is a section on training AI.

I know how to train the ai, but if they cant make 15 laps without half the field damaging out or getting stuck together at turn 3, what other choice do I have?

leave them to it. After they have completed a couple of laps they will not hit the wall anymore.
Also if they mash themselves up they do an instant repair job

Nah. I found out its impossible to train the AI like that.
Same class 12 cars works much better then 12 different cars.
For example I was training FOXes on FE Gold. It was going well they really learned. Then I removed all learned files and tried just one of each and they kept going over the edge into the sand and spinning out. They recovered but kept doing it. So.... I guess its somehow impossible to train them at this point. Or the 2 smaller cars would roll on the roof at the last corner before Start finish line and the GTI hits it so bad and doesnt repair itself that it stays stationary on track with really bend front end and try to keep going but cant. Doesnt resets itself either.

Exactly - and I'm starting to wonder if this has something to do with the devs not included mature .knw files. At the very least, have .knw files for the same type of cars on all tracks on pro mode. I just cant make it happen.

In that case I must be doing things wrong because now when I have them in the same cars they do not all drive the same line, will try to overtake under braking and actually appear to realise I am on the track and take steps to avoid me a little. They still ram me if I am slower through a corner than them but on the whole its possible to race them and have a good race in non downforce cars.
Its good going into a corner behind a few AI and watching one dive down the inside trying to make a move on another. I have put some effort into mine though as I am doing all my driving offline until I get around to adding the cat5 through to the room my race rig is located.
Before it was hard to include mature AI files because the default race sets were so bad and setup changes effects the AI in that they have to learn the car again. With the new default sets being good it is getting near that time where mature AI files can be included.

Is it normal that people in the servers drive into you with full throttle in a slow corner? Especially in the T1 corner and usually with the BF1 car. Is this normal?

AFAIR, AI have no 'understanding' of fuel loads or tyre temps. The effect of this is that if you train them up from scratch on a long race, they do well by the end... unfortunately, when you start another session, they crash out all over the place, because they are trying to drive lines and braking points for warm tyres and low fuel weight!
Maybe, if you did multiple training sessions of 2 - 4 laps each, it might work out better? I'm certainly not waste my time doing that though ;)

Ah that could explain why all my AIs now drive wide into sand.
But I think the Sauber is the smartest off all the AIs even though its the youngest. It can drive from lap 1 till last lap and repeat it in the next race. Maybe it understands the tyre temp and wear better then others.

So if I give them setups with high wings they will know what to do?

I didn't drive with the AI since the earlier versions of lfs, where you had to unlock your cars! It's suppose to be a online sim anyway ;)
