View Full Version : What are your 'must-have' mods?

Live For Speed is a great game out of the box. However; we all know it can be improved upon with a few tweaks and texture add-ons. What do you guys consider "must haves" for LFS? In other words, if you had to do a clean install tomorrow, what are the mods that simply MUST be installed over the default LFS install?
Here's a list of mine:
GhostCar: http://www.kegetys.net/lfs/ (http://www.kegetys.net/lfs/)
Al Heeley's sidewalls: http://www.niw-files.com/alheeley/LOGOALPHA.dds (http://www.niw-files.com/alheeley/LOGOALPHA.dds)
Reflection texture mod: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=6753 (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=6753)
High resolution driver suit: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=3627 (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=3627)
F1 Honda driver suit: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=4940 (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=4940)
Alpinestars gloves: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=4312&highlight=gloves (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=4312&highlight=gloves)
A skin or three for each car: http://skinnerz.proboards26.com/index.cgi (http://skinnerz.proboards26.com/index.cgi)
The 50mph pit limit sign: http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=202216&highlight=speed+limit
South City crowd "fix": http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=7077
Until last week, Bob's "Easy Race" sets would have been on the list too. :)
So, what mods can you guys just not live without?

Pit Spotter! Racing online without it should be penalised by castration ! :)

I consider myself castrated. I never use it, and don't plan to start.

I don't use pitspotter either. I can see that it would be useful on a track like the oval, but not so much on tighter tracks where passes happen more quickly.
However; I would prefer to remain uncastrated. :)

Who needs pitspotter when you got two functioning ears, and look-around buttons mapped to your wheel?

Pitspotter is the only one on my list. Love that one.
I can see that it would be useful on a track like the oval, but not so much on tighter tracks where passes happen more quickly.
Passes don't neccessarily happen more quickly. Well, when you pass me, maybe because I'm so slow, but on the other hand, if I'm passing you, it may take me a while  .
Who needs pitspotter when you got two functioning ears, and look-around buttons mapped to your wheel?
I can't tell by sound if they are just getting close or are up beside me. If Pitspotter helps me to keep my eyes ahead instead of looking next to me, then I use it. That is precisely why I use it, to concentrate on looking ahead. I still look beside me, but it can be a quicker glance.
And thanks for putting this thread up. I've been wondering where the 50 mph pitroad sign was, but was too lazy to hunt it down.

I'm not sure, but I would guess so. I don't really do hotlaps for the charts. I just do them to learn the best way around the track.

Anyone else have any mods to share?
I forgot to mention Analyze for Speed, but that's also a really great one for comparing your runs to the WRs or to your friends: http://www.ctd-racing.com/AFS/
unfortunately, it looks like there's a problem with the site.

None. I tried the spotter, but it couldn't get it to work/ Probably the wrong port or something, but it might have been that it needs online or something.
Judging by the video, it would do a great job of getting me to swear at the screen. The voice would drive me NUTS. I'd consider trying to get it to work if, and only if, a non-US voice pack for it is available. Also, other languages might be liked by some. If a French, German or Non-US English pitspotter sound set was launched, I would use that :)
I would never use the 50mph sign. I think in KPH (too much GeneRally + GT3) and use KPH on the hud, kW for power and would use pascals for tyre pressure, but bar is used and that's ok.

Ouch:( :schwitz: Easy for YOU to say!:really: :D
The Ghost car patch was OK, it is well done, but I almost never use it.
The Pit spotter voice comes straight out of NASCAR 2003 season. I wouldn't doubt there are individual sound or ogg files with the voice in it for each statement. Just record your own and replace them.
I may have to give some of these others a try too

i dont really need pit spotter. i pretty much never cause any accidents or do any dirty blocking. i wish it was on by default though, because lots of people should be using it.

I tried the dds mod and was wondering how to use just the one that makes the cars shinier. I like the rest of LFS to be default. I like the sunset.

What was the error, because it does work offline and it is very useful if you've got a low FOV and can't see the car beside you (without looking left/right of course). IIRC there was something to do with having a password in a multiplayer server set-up - search the add-ons section for the release of pitspotter, there's some help in there.

You get used to the voice and even on non-oval tracks it really helps when you're side-by-side going round a corner. You get the message "clear" when both cars aren't going to collide. I'd seriously suggest you try it and see if it helps.
As for non-US accent and other languages, yes that would be cool. Fairly easy to make as well as they are only wav files.

I make a lot of skins, but aside from that it's pretty much just texture updates.
Although, I started using Becky's Backfire mod. It breaks up the monotony of the LFS sounds. Make everything a little dirtier, I like it that way. :)

A few high res .dds files but only on the driver/car:-alpinestars gloves, steering wheel, callipers and brake discs.
If skins are considered a mod then a few of those too.
That's all I'm interested in, in the past I've had several games busted by 3rd party mods, and these days I just stay away from them [although I'm not suggesting that the ones here aren't properly coded.]

Sounds and glancing are more than adequate for me although I dont drive on the oval trackstis still useful, imageing i someone late braked and shot downn the inside while you were looking the other way? best bit is if you THINK your clear, and you pull across and finstail yourself around the person, but with bit spotter it will actually tell you when theres no overlap, yes, its designed for the oval, but it work very well on the other track
