First, you have to know which skin you want to edit. go to your LFS/data/skins folder to see which skin you want to fool around with, then make a duplicate of it, and name it whatever you want. For example: If you want to edit a skin for the XFG car, look for the XFG_DEFAULT.jpg, and duplicate it. (name it something else, like: XFG_myskin.jpg)

after that, download this: http://www.lfs.net/file_mirror.php?name=LFS_VIEWER_6A.exe
extract it to a folder called LFSviewer and put it wherever,
drag the skin you want to edit to the LFSviewer/data/skins folder,
open the skin you are trying to edit in Photoshop.

Photoshop is nowhere near as complicated as people claim it is. Chances are;

if you know how to use Microsoft Paint, you already know how to use Photoshop.
If you know how to copy and paste, you know how to use Photoshop.
If you know how to type with text and change fonts in a word processor, you know how to use Photoshop.
If you know how to read, you can use Photoshop.
If you have a soul, you know how to use photoshop.

The only thing you really have to learn how to do is use the little LAYERS window.
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/layers/window.gif

this is the most important element in making a skin, and it is also probably the easiest thing in Photoshop, not to mention, it's the most awesome thing in the universe.

If you want to add a design from another document or a picture, drag it on your skin. if you want to add some text, use the tool in the tools menu (http://raysweb.net/photoshop-lessons/images/photoshop-tools.gif)that looks like a T, click on an area of the skin you are editing, then start typing.
If you want to move a picture or text you added around on your skin, use the move tool. (it's the tool on the upper right-hand corner of the tools window. It looks like an arrow. (http://raysweb.net/photoshop-lessons/images/photoshop-tools.gif))

you can go to the file menu -> save as... save it in the same place with the same name, replacing the old file, then open the CMX viewer in the LFSviewer folder to preview how your skin is going to look.

ALWAYS save a copy of the document as a .psd document so you can edit it in the future.

I know this is some pretty half-assed information, (sorry 'bout that,) but this should help you at least get started on making a skin. I think you can figure the majority of the other stuff out on your own. After you make a skin, we can start talking about uploading your skin to lfsworld.net (http://www.lfsworld.net/) so that everyone you race against can see it.:thumbsup:
