View Full Version : LFS got jeleous to other sims

I have been driving other sims some time now and for some reason I get only 45-60fps in LFS, but I have not changed anything in my system, drivers hardware everything is same, all settings are also untouched.
Other games run fine, but LFS is running very slow, I think I got more FPS before, like constant 66fps where I have limited it.
I have:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Ati Radeon 9700 (not pro version) (Catalyst 5.9)
512Mt ram
Has anyone experienced similar ever before?

Not new ones, GTR has been long time and with that always worked ok before so no reason why not now?
Only NetkarPro and rFactor, but it worked well with rFactor too and NetkarPro can't really affect that way as it is similar to LFS you just unzip it to folder.

try the 5.11 drivers OR the 6.3's

Even better to try the 6.4's!

only 45-60fps in LFS
ONLY!!! I get like 2-20 fps. Try racing in a pack of twenty with 6 fps.

why are you guys run so low fps... i run constant 130... (yeah smartass.. removed the limitter)

im like Rappa Z, i will run a max of 20fps during a race, even if im on the track all by myself. i find it hard to battle for position cause anytime i get close, the track is like a jigsaw....you gotta put the pieces together and guess the rest.

They aren't though choice - it's because their hardware (and mine too for that matter) can't do any more... Some of us don't have the luxury of super PC's...

I've just built a PC (With 17" TFT, KB mouse) for just under £300 that runs a solid 50 FPS...

Yes, and I built my PC for £700 3.5 years ago, and I can't afford to make a new one (yet). Like I say, not all of us have new/good PC's. If we could we'd all run at 5000000fps, but some of us have to make do with lesser resolutions, less AA/AF, less frame rates, and all the problems they entail. Eventually we will get new PC's and all will be good, but I can't afford to buy a new PC every time my LFS fps drops below 40

I know everyone can't afford a new computer, I was just trying to make the point that a decent PC doesn't have to cost the earth (I know £300 is still alot of money!)
Sorry if it came accross any other way!

I'm really not getting why would I change gfx driver as it worked well before and I have not changed anything, so naturally problem have to be something else than display drivers, right?
And because I previously got constant 66fps (limited) I should be getting same now.
Rappa Z, what is your system specs?
As you all could read from my first post, I was asking if someone had experienced similar sudden fps decrease, but so far there has been apparently none.
I start to kill processes one by one, maybe I find something, but I'm suspicious as in windows task manager, LFS uses only 90% CPU when I'm driving...
Changing LFS gfx options seem to affect next to nothing, btw. max or min details and it is 1 or 2 fps difference.
Maybe I test also fresh install of lfs to see if there is any difference.
Why I'm against installing new drivers? Well, generally if something has worked before and is not working now, changing drivers and such is quaranteed way to get into trouble.

This is really odd, I needed to turn simple track (no car shadow) option to off it was set to all, so add more detail to get better fps. I'm pretty sure that I have not touched that however, but now I get better fps.
Can't really see why it works that way, hmm.

Did you download and install the latest Cat's for your GFX card?.

I found the same thing. I always had it set to all and saw a suggestion a while back to turn it off. I think I achieved better frame rates, but the best part was my wheels are now round.
I get 40-60 fps (depending on track/number of racers) from an AMD 64 3500, 1 gig ram, and new ATI onboard 256 shared video (running 1152x864x32 with 4xAA/4xAF). Like tristan has said, not everyone can afford the best, especially when they have a wife and kids to pay for as well. A video card as well is way out of the price range.

Dan,
I tested this afterwards, fps gain -2 to -4, stuttering, great old problem came back -> faster than light I go device manager and bring back old better drivers, ahh, smooth again :schwitz::nod:
I think that there is HVS on off options in LFS, that is shaders, imo?
In netkar I need to turn shaders off as with dx9 shaders I get 50-70% drop in framerate, in rfactor I run in dx7 mode, gfx card don't know all latest stuff :(
I bought my system 2004 summer, well only Motherboad + CPU, gfx card I have had before that, maybe 2003 summer can't remember.
For me it is nowdays impossible to upgrade, my net income is 550€/month and rent alone is 340€/month so you can guess how much extra there is for hobbies like real car upgrades and computer...
But after around year it will be quite must to upgrade gfx card and add more memory, should find job before that and with upcoming energy crisis it is not so easy.
LFS is good as it runs rather well with poor system too, also when you limit fps to lowest setting where it goes when driving you get much better feeling to car.
LFS Wiki is not telling anything from this simple track option, would be nice to know what it _really_ does.

you dont have to get an entirely new pc each time...

You know having computer that runs modern games is going to cost same amount over long perioid of time what ever you buy once expensive and powerful or make small upgrades every now and then.
My upgrades did cost gfx card 270€, cpu + mb 500€, that was not new computer as those were only parts I did change. Paying more once just saves from that installing trouble, nothing more annoying than installing drivers and trying to get windows to work, then to find out that no, it won't start working wihout fresh install, I try to delay that as far as I can :D

well you did it wrong then, i pretty much upgraded my entire machine (even the main hdd) without formating windows...
also, what would you prefer, wait and wait to save up for a new pc or save a little, buy a part and improve performacne a little, then get more improvements in another shorter time

Heh, I have small guess that I did not do wrong as I have been done hundreds of upgrades, there is just some things in Windows that you can't beat no matter how clever you try to be, for example it was possible to get rig running playing games etc, but performance was only 70-80% what it should be, only with fresh installed xp was able to get performace back, this happened several times.
Ok, you should remove all drivers in fault safe mode before changing parts. Good, good, oh what, why this is bluescreening at 2nd boot.
What I'm trying to say here, that when you change some parts to some other parts mb for example, you may get working system or may not, depending from chipset and what is onboard, etc.
Once I was thinking too that it is stupid to do that hard way, but after few hundred cases you started to see why it is better to longer route, that is near 100% sucseed, schedules are not flawing etc. Ok, bit of business side here, but somehow I'm starting to value my own free time too much to use it for playing with installations and setting things up when I can use it for racing and hotlapping instead ;)
Okay, maybe I'm just getting lazy and old, but that is sometimes called experience, silly isn't it? :tilt:

Yeah you do - what will work out my box? The CD Drive? The monitor (crappy 25ms response anyway :(), the keyboard and mouse... Might as well start afresh with a nice new shiny shuttle (I love em) to replace my nice old shiny shuttle :D

I've always thought that LFS is really "compatible" or whatever you wanna call it. It works on a lot of low-end computers as well as high-end, and I've always been very happy about the fact that I can run LFS in 1280x1024 with 3xAA and 3xAF at >60 FPS (I have my framelimiter to 60 though, because of my refresh-rate) - so it's weird that you can't even hit 66 or above that, because your system is a lot better than mine.

its blue screening because the chipset drivers werent removed properly. google sysprep, run that before changing the mobo and it works fine. ive swapped out many motherboards all without windows slowing down afterwards or blue screening

Turn of virtical sync in your graphics card drivers, this usually limits fps to 60, you'll see no difference without it with your specs :P

I think you have missed few messages in thread ;)
vsync is limiting fps to refresh rate, so if you get it limited to 60 you will have 60Hz refresh rate and that is bad for eyes if you use CRT monitor, I have 85Hz refresh rate so vsync limits to that, but I have manually set limit to 66fps as that is lowest where it will go during online races.

CRT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube) big old fashion thing, looks similar to tv
TFT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD) flat modern display, it looks flat, bit like window, eh
You just have to love Wiki :D

Oh that depends from you monitor, if you have 1024x768 resolution and 19" monitor it is pretty safe to use 85Hz, 75Hz at least, you can choose this in LFS screen settings.
75Hz is considered at minium to not get headache and other symptoms, it is that flickering that causes problems, also some say it may launch epilepsy if you have something else already causing probability to epilepsy.
85Hz is considered what is that you should try to get and more is always better, but some monitors can't go so high.
