View Full Version : Why "Live for Speed" ?

breadfan
6th January 2010, 08:03
Why was this name chosen in the beginning? Not that I don't like it, but everytime some friend of mine asks what's my favorite game and I say "Live for Speed", they respond in confusion: "You mean Need for Speed, right?"

And then I have to explain that LFS is a racing simulator and they go on: "Yes, then you mean Need for Speed". After explaining what a racing simulator is, they finally understand that it's a different game, but still can't get their heads around the similar name.

My question is then, what lead to the name "Live for Speed" ? Was the similarity intentional? Was it a sort of "marketing" strategy in the beginning? Or was it just the developers' way of life? You know...for Speed?

I like the name - "Life for speed" - it nicely defines the game and my feeling while playing it but it is really confusing for people who hear the name for the first time and I also hate the whole explaining that no, I am not a 10-year old child playing nfs... this is something far different...
I remember only one time that a friend of mine asked me what I was playing on the wheel and I said Live for speed and I automatically started explaining and he stopped me that he knew the game :D

and the other problem is...when I explain it is a great simulator and they want to try it, majority of them cant make one corner properly which seems like it is very far from reality but I think the problem is they dont feel the speed because going 80kph in lfs is like going 30kph in a real car...if you dont feel the forces it really degrades feeling of speed

If the vote took place today, the winner would be "Live for Updates".

"Moaners Heaven" but there was a bar in Tijuana that has the right of this name ,so Lfs was the second choice.

Kinda similar thing was asked from me too once, I said also "Live for speed" and then I get a response asking me, which one of it you're playing? I was like omg.. and had to repeat the name many times...

...I think the problem is they dont feel the speed because going 80kph in lfs is like going 30kph in a real car...if you dont feel the forces it really degrades feeling of speed

That's because of the fov. One of the main things which help you to feel the speed are the sides of the road passing fast. The problem is, with a single screen is not possible to see the sides as you'd do in real life. Try to adjust the fov to lets say 20 degrees and drive your car at 200kph. It looks like if you were parking the car at 0.5kph. Some other games add fake effects like motion blur, inexistent vibrations, etc to compensate this lack, but we know how LFS is so we don't want that. 3 screens is a good solution

And yeah, I have the same story when I talk someone about LFS

Greboth
6th January 2010, 13:47
If anyone asks generally I go for "It's called LFS, it stands for live for speed" and more often than not they pay attention to the LFS so realise its not live for speed.

And Off topic: Why does every thread have to be a dig at the development speed :banghead:

JasonJ
6th January 2010, 15:11
If because of the name you have to explain to people what is the difference is between a "simulator" and a "game" then you are educating them. Which is a good thing.

NitroNitrous

"Moaners Heaven" but there was a bar in Tijuana that has the right of this name ,so Lfs was the second choice.
Awesome, I lol'd at that.

This question has also been on my mind a lot. It's a great simulation and it doesn't deserve any relation to NFS, in my opinion.

AcesHigh
6th January 2010, 20:30
Actually Need For Speed is a great name IMO, but i dont say that loud! :x

Ivé had thoughts about the name aswell... why choose a name so closely confused with NFS?

The word "LIVE" can also be used to describe online gaming. Indicating that the games focus mainly on online playing.

Or just "Live for" as in dedicated to.

Or maybe both at the same time! :thumb:

so maybe "Online for speed" or just "live for speed" :shy:

Hmm now i just realise how f*cked up this post is:D wonder what that "shroom" i ate came from... :schwitz:

Same here actually.

As for the relation between NFS and LFS, my theory is...
Need for Speed is just that - the need for speed. The urge to go fast, nothing more.
Live for Speed means that you have to live to be fast, it means dedication, concentration, hours of training and experience.

there are hardly any people from slovakia/czech rep. who would pronounce it properly... but for example if you have LIVE in a meaning of LIVE TV broadcasting it is pronounced [laiv] - that is a bit closer :D

Until this game, err... sim goes final S3 and we see it on the shelves etc. no-ones gonna know what we are on about.

The problem is that they are mostly used to taking a corner doing 160mph. I hardly ever used brakes in NFS. Better yet, LFS is a shitty game because you cannot drift properly, you need to use too many inputs at the same time, which sucks.

I remember playing NFS again after a long period of LFS-ing and I just couldn't believe how wrong this POS game is. How could have I thought back then that I was a good driver? I was speeding (massively) in a Gallardo through a downtown, handbrake turns everywhere, nitrous blazing through the engine and humongous motion blur all around your head, YEAH!

Oh and sorry for going offtopic, but since it is my thread, I am excused :P

Every time I try to draw pictures with my programming text editor, do calculations with my paint program, or balance my checkbook using my media player I have the same thought you did.

Give him a break. As long as his intention was not to complain about there are no options to setup the lock to a 1440 degrees there's nothing wrong with that.

breadfan

I think that there is some misunderstanding.

I was being sarcastic. What I meant to say is: Lots of people, mainly kids, play Need for Speed for hours and then they think that they are the best drifters in the world. These same kids then somehow get sat behind a G25 and LFS and start to complain about it being a shitty game, because you need to do too much stuff at a time to achieve a 2-second drift.

I was the same. I remember yelling: "Why doesn't the f...ing car brake better? Why do I oversteer all the time? Why do I have to go so slow through every corner? This LFS game sucks!"

Then I got the hang of it and after some time I nostalgically returned to playing NFS and I must say I was amazed how bad, and I mean BAAAD (as in PowerGlove baaad) the arcadey physics are.

My sincere apology, the misunderstanding was mine. I was speed reading and saw "LSF sucks for drifting" and.... well....

I have nothing against drifters, or drifting, or anything anyone wants to do with the game they bought. As long as they go to the drift servers, or the cruise servers, more power to them. I thought someone was complaining about not being able to drift in a racing simulator.

OT - I can't think of a better name for LFS. Fits perfectly.

Well I was playing NFS as well but when I discovered LFS and couldn't brake or turn properly I was somehow happy that I finally found THE game (simulator) because NFS was year by year reason why I started this searching :P .

Im totally with you on that one!

Its so funny when you PWN people by throwning it back at them, the usual dialouge looks like this.

Person- What games do you play.

me- [insert game here] and [insert game here] and Live For Speed(LFS)

Person- you mean Need For Speed (and looks at me like im a total n00b)

me- no this is a different game, its much better...

Person- Sounds like a cheap copy, cant be better than NFS!

me- its doesnt have anything to do with NFS other than the simular names.

Then i explain all about LFS. And occasionally someone takes interest in the game and some people just says "ok sounds like crap, ill go play NFS most wanted".

i think it fits.

i played a arcade game (literally in an arcade :D) it had a clutch and a 6-speed shifter, but not the g25, on an arcadey game, i was so obsessed with it, i looked up for christmas a wheel with a clutch. i found the g25, then i got it.

nfs just wouldnt cut it for the g25, i knee tt, it was obvious....the first game i played with it, was undercover. i went to the computer, and yes...yahoo answers

i found all these suggestions for rfactor, and iracing, and GTR, and all that. i knew the demos werent that good.....so i finally found one with the name lfs, i havent heard of it....so i looked it up. everyone from my noobish eyes was like 'omgawd dis iz da best simul8r EVARR!!!!11!11!1' so i thought, let me try it, i could not think of a username, and i thought i would not like it at all, and quit, so i picked the username that cme to mind first, logitekg25

then i absolutely loved it, and then well...check my signature :D :shy:

I believe one of the best ways to rate the realism of a racing simulator is to drift in it... and LFS feels the closest to the real thing IMO. That says a lot about the physics and vehicle dynamics.

LOLZ Poser!!

I am looking forward to car roll... it's really quite weird to see a car "dive" under braking and stay flat through the corners... hehe.

Regarding the OP... I once had to endure someone (with one of the later NFS titles) lecture me on how he could drive "Real cars" and because it had "Real cars" it must be realistic, I mean, manufacturers wouldn't allow their cars to be represented in a false fashion, would they?

I cba to argue with him, so I just nodded and moved away...
