A New Destruction Derby Server!

Hey everyone!

As some of you probably know, I've always been a firm supporter of LFS Destruction Derby for well over a year now. But now I think it's time that I actually started up a DD server of my own to end the monopoly that is [CAD] Destruction Derby (they could do with some competition :)).

I'll obviously need to get a server first, but I will be borrowing a server from someone in the next few days just to show the idea of the server to new (and old!) LFS DD racers before buying a server of my own. I'll most likely purchase this server sometime in the new year. I haven't fully decided on the name of the server yet, but it will be something along the lines of "LFS Destruction Derby" or probably a "team tag".

The style of "Destruction Derby" that I'll be promoting on the server is based on the [noobs] Destruction Derby server from last year: (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=49882) and not the [CAD] server. As TVE said:
There are basically no rules, first man to cross the line (or if arenas as skid pads, last man moving) is the winner. Layouts are various kind of freak set-ups with bales, tyres etc that are there for making it more chaotic and destructive atmosphere.
It'll be this idea over a multitude of tracks, usually using the Road class of cars (hopefully the Scirocco & Rockingham will be out sometime soon to provide a new flavour to DD racing).

Also, this new server will host home to the second season of the TBO-only Destruction Derby League (which had the [CAD] tag last season) which I hope will be much better-attended this time around than last season. I put this down due to a lack of commitment, e.g. some people who signed up never bothered to race, although there could be reasons for this. This second season will be announced nearer to the time.

I will announce in this thread when the temporary server is up, and will also announce when the permanent server is up (sometime in 2010).

If you've got any comments, suggestions or critcisms, then just post and I'll be happy on take them on board. Let's make this DD server one that's raced, adminned and fuelled by the LFS community, just like [noobs]!

...the problem with [CAD] and other servers is choice in track and layout, imo we should not have long straights where a wrecker is given the chance to ruin the race for others as this is where all the complaining begins.

Short city tracks with the lower powered cars is best if you ask me:shrug:

Yeah, I agree with that but unfortunately most of the tracks in LFS aren't short city tracks. Plus some of the "classic" DD tracks don't have long straights; FE Club Reverse for example doesn't have a significantly long straight in it (well, except for the start/finish straight).

Plus taking people out to gain positions is kind of what DD racing is about.

The main target (as stated in the first post) is to win by any means necessary. That doesn't mean trying to block the track and ruin people's races.

Light to heavy contact is what its all about, not a full blown analfest. Maybe I'm just whining myself, but I imagine a 'no front bumper contact' would make DD much much more interesting only allowing side contact, pit maneuvers are the ultimate thing that pisses me off.

as for the server jon send me a pm and i will give you a remote desktop connection to a vm im running to host the server on, its running with hardware supported vm so it will be like logging in to a normal computer speed wise but its a vm so you can have full access to the box.

Now we'll have a server with clear guidelines, as I understand - there are no rules at all (almost).

I am not going to defend or attack CAD, but after beeing banned by a admin who clearly was too high of himself I just got enough.. The admins should have a good time, and so should the guest have. In a DD server it needs a relaxed mood, not an admin that will ban you for question his work.

I mean, seriously, as admin you should just ignore the comments you don't like. If someone offends you, ignore them, they'll get tired of it eventually.

But enough of that, lets focus on the server, it's welcommed :)

TBO only is a great thing I think, maybe to rotations to have just one car? 1 car will ofer more equally races. As someone _might_ have noticed a side by side battle between 4WD and 2WD on grass just ain't fair.

Just look at the attachment. Truly amazing. Achieved in 8 hours of the server being active. (Plus we've beaten our rivals :smileypul)

Also, we've got a SECOND SERVER (courtesy of gotspeed, so thanks for that!) based in the US so it's handy for our American friends! I've loaded up a classic onto the server: BL1R with TBOs. That server is at LFS Destruction Derby #2.

I would have never expected the server to get this popular, this quick!

If you're up for trying I've always thought 'South City Sprint 2 reversed' would be good for this, start would be chaos, but lots of very solid walls and only 2 left-handers so banger sets work well there.

New layout for you, it's basically just the starting grid of KY1 walled off so that we can have a banger arena that allows a full grid to compete. Obviously it's not a racing track, so it's the last car moving that would win.

Another one for you, it's on BL1 and has some big jumps and tricky offroad sections. I put lines down to help people line up the jumps so they don't hit the gaps in the ramps and flip, and I marked out dangerous bits with orange and yellow cones.

I have some suggestions too, since lots of people seem to be complaining about people hitting them at full speed perhaps you could make it clear that it's not CAD by changing the server name to remove the racing part. The winner should be the person that can survive the mayhem. I think the only 2 rules should be...

1. No driving the wrong way on proper circuit tracks (non arena tracks).
2. You must attempt to survive the turns (so you can still go in too fast to hit someone, but not flat out)

Also the obvious issues you know about but I thought I would put them here are that the insim spectates you for going out of control and the pit limiter should be removed because it serves no purpose. If the pit limiter was removed we could have some fun pitlane tracks too.

Here is a new layout, since we don't need to worry about pitlane speed limits anymore this one gives you the option of going through the pitlane which is faster but has an extra jump. There are a few offroad bits too. I've also included a tidier banger arena on Aston with better restriction zones which should catch cars that fly over the ones on the other arena.

Going to be concentrating on races more than pure DD, but it'll be about 50:50 of each per night.

I quite enjoy the racing withthe custom layouts, so it's a bit more extreme version of touring cars.

I esp love the ufr vs xfr, jumps are ok but the bl1 track I used to win that all the time with a jump set

A lot of the fun ppl who do destruction derby were banned from cad for silly things

but cad is a bit spaz. Rather the ppl who play it sometimes still 'dont get it'. I spun this dude near the start and sure enough 'ban kingston he's a crasher' lol

EDIT: Tried this layout quicksilver and it's pretty fun. I think 1 lap on this would be enough and I was not expecting the sharp stop at the end of the straight even after i drove it once in a slow car which was cool, can imagine lots of people crashing there and the bit where it doubles back on its self was cool. Took about 3 min in the rac and over 4 min in the xfg as it practically stops in the sand parts.

It looks like team DD has become very popular on the server, so this may become a regular feature (although as some people in the server at the time would know, I'm not that much of a fan of it!). Server is on with FE1R at the moment (as far as I know).

And a little more info on the invite-only events: these should happen at the back end of this month / early January. They will be weekly events that will race on a variety of tracks, including the Car Park, Autocross, Skid Pad, South City Sprints and some others. Invites will be limited to 16 for each event, and I will choose the people who can attend.

The name will be the same as the previous one (LFS Destruction Derby) and hopefully this will be a great success within the LFS community. There will be new lyts. I got 3 wip dd lyts atm, one will be finished today. Then I got lyts from Jon,which are good lyts too. And I decided I will try to make atleast 2 new lyts a week, so there will be always something new on server.

Yes, the server is still online, it's just that nobody's been on it for a while. This will soon change though from this time next week (13th) seeing as it's half-term in the UK from the 12th.

The main reason I decided to reply was that I wanted to get some community feedback on how the second season of the LFS Destruction Derby League could be improved from last season's. I've already started thinking about certain changes that could be made, e.g. the registration system and skins, but would like some more suggestions.

So if you've got anything to say about the following, then please don't hesitate to suggest:

What layouts/tracks should be used
What day and what time of the year should the league be run (last year it was ran on alternate Saturdays between August and November)
What should be done to make an equal field (TBO cars are used for the league in case you didn't know)
Should there be any rule changes, and if so, what should they be (Original rules can be found here (http://chaosaddicted.ace.st/league-info-registration-f12/cad-destruction-derby-league-league-rules-t20.htm))
Anything else that you'd like to mention
Hopefully these replies can help make the second season of the DD league even better than first.

Well, I'm pleased to announce that at 9pm tomorrow night (23/10), just after the final round of the second season of my LFS Destruction Derby League, the LFS Destruction Derby server will go live for full-time DD fun!

What I'm aiming to do with this server is for classic, [noobs]-style DD action; that means barely any rules. Or, in the words of the great DD god (:D):

There are basically no rules, first man to cross the line (or if arenas as skid pads, last man moving) is the winner. Layouts are various kind of freak set-ups with bales, tyres etc that are there for making it more chaotic and destructive atmosphere.

I'll be putting on a variety of courses and layouts pretty much all the time, including those classic layouts, a series of new(...ish) layouts, and some Death Lanes as well! :evil:

So 9pm BST is the time, and LFS Destruction Derby is the place to be tomorrow night.

Hope you can come along and enjoy the fun that is LFS Destruction Derby!

Sadly I lost all my skins and setups during a re-install of windows.
I had a really good RB4 set.

Destruction derby has similarities with banger, but Destruction Derby (at least in this way) is a faster version of it on bigger track. Usually banger series are with the slow UF1 car while DD is with TBO / faster cars.

I was playing on the server today (CAD Destruction Derby?) and after hitting one of their members out of the race, I was called a "bitch", I did it again for laughs sake and was banned :shrug: No explanation but I guess its quite obvious

Did I miss the point, I thought crashing others (other than fullspeed ram and blocking) is allowed on Destruction Derby?

All I did was PIT their member (as one of them did to me previously) and push the other to sand pit in a corner in AS3 (banned now)

Joke aside - as the fellow above here tells it's two different servers and staff. CAD server is more aimed for racing on various layouts, while the DD server aims for the same but without restrictions. Wrong way, road blocks, foul language may occure, but that's just the nature of the server :tilt:

I know it happened sometimes when I was still in the [CAD] team, but I've been reading the [CAD] forums and this just seems to be happening more and more often. It's not going to look good for them if this keeps happening.

Also, this might not be the place to say it, but I don't think that the [CAD] server is a real Destruction Derby server anymore. It's just racing on layouts with minimal contact allowed. Ironically, when I first thought of my Destruction Derby League, it would have been a minimal contact league, just like what [CAD] has become. However, I realised that this might be very boring, and taking the original [noobs] Destruction Derby server into account, I changed it to its current format.

Which brings me onto the real topic of this post: I've been thinking about some changes for the 2011 season of my DD League (assuming it goes ahead), and would like any community suggestions on what could be improved or added from last season.

Currently I've got one idea, which is that the final round (the Elimination Extravaganza) will also be a points round, although I haven't fully decided on how the points system would work yet.

I think the TBO class are fine, but fxo/rb4 needs restriction as the xrt is not optimal compared to them.

I think the elimination system could be done on a more funnier way. After each 3 - 5. race there would be an elimination round. Here the bottom 5 would battle it out on the skid pad. Goal is to be the last man running, with a 10 minutes time limit. If you are out of track / rolled over it's game over. If there are more than one car moving at the end of the race, a judge would deside who got the most damaged car (clutch inidcator + bodyshape?) and that person with least damage would win (edited). While the other 4 would gain no points the winner would get 5-10 extra points to help him climb the ladder. The one with the least points would be the one beeing knocked out of the session.

With the new test patches there are a whole load of new possible track layouts, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna incorporate them in the season. At the moment, these are the following X/Y layouts that will most likely be used in the season (track numbers are in reference to this thread (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=73903)):

AS12
FE12R (with a slight adjustment)
B21R
For South City, I was thinking about including that new experimental area but would rather not use it because of all the problems regarding access and falling out of the track; if that's the case then I might be using SO6R instead. As for Kyoto... it may be a third time on the oval but it might be on a X/Y layout; I haven't really thought about that round yet.

Also had an idea for a winter series that would feature the XFG and XRG on some of the smaller tracks but that's a very rough idea at the moment and it's doubtful whether it would go ahead or not.

If anyone asks about a date for the new season: if there hasn't been any announcement by 1st July then it won't be going ahead this year.

I canot join because of various reasons, but some races here and there I could join (with keyboard driving since I am on a laptop lol). Is there a server up running 24/7 or is it just league racing?
