View Full Version : Test Patch Z26 (installer test + minor updates)

WARNING : THIS IS A TEST
NOTE : THIS DOES NOT CONTAIN NEW PHYSICS / VW SCIROCCO / ROCKINGHAM
Hello Racers, here is a new Test Patch : Z26. It is fully compatible with version Z25.
Please keep a backup of your LFS.exe from version Z25 so you can go back to Z25 if there are any problems.
This is mainly about the new installer which Victor has been working on.
Thank you translators, for making the new installer translations. :)
The installer gives you a default folder of C:\LFS but you can choose wherever you like. Vista and Windows 7 users should preferably not use their Program Files folder because of some issues that come up.
The installer is very non-intrusive, it just does a normal LFS install and adds an icon to your desktop (if you wish) and a start menu item (if you wish). Also optional is an auto setup of file associations for SPR / MPR / LYT and SET files. This will be very helpful for new LFS users who can sometimes install LFS in the wrong place using the old self-extracting archives.
Also new is updated support for the URL lfs:// which can be used to start LFS using a command line from a web page. This will be the new method for "LFS Join" links at www.lfsworld.net Previously a special program needed to be installed but soon the "join" links will work for any copy of LFS installed using the installer.
LFS World is not yet updated to the new system. You can test anyway by visiting this temporary web page after installing Z26.
http://www.lfsworld.net/hostjointest.php
You can test the full version installer, or you can use the Z25 to Z26 patch. This will require you to select your existing LFS folder.
Changes from Z25 to Z26 :
Added support for lfs:// start LFS with command line from web page
Various translation updates
FIX : It was possible to reset the car while a vote was in progress
FIX : Clicking SPR / MPR did not work if "Load track when starting"
FIX : Help buttons sometimes translated after returning to English
FIX : Two or more dedicated hosts could be started with same port

Updater and join links works but I found some minor errors.
In google chrome only run the links
lfs://join=South%20City%20TBO
lfs://join=Fern%20Bay%20TBO
but not from
http://www.lfsworld.net/hostjointest.php
also, in internet explorer run from lfsworld, so can be problem with google chrome.
The other problem is some characters, so search MK in the list on http://www.lfsworld.net/hostjointest.php (our server is MecaHostMK| Server #1) when LFS try to open this servers change the by an ?, so try to open MecaHostMK?| Server #1 and don't run.

Worked fine.
But the installer has an translation mistake :D
German translation on the last wizard page:
"Deine Live for Speed installation in s:\Live for Speed wurde erfolgreich auf Version 0.5Z26 aktualisiert."
The i of installation must be a capital i.

The url registration works with all browsers. For some though you first have to confirm to allow use of the url protocol, but in those cases it should present you with the default of LFS.exe being used for lfs:// urls.
You do no longer need to use join2lfs (man, does anyone read the OP?)
Chrome is quite bad in doing the url forwarding. It seems to not even attempt to run some hosts with certain characters and it doesn't matter if I urlencode these characters.
IE also has some problems with certain characters, like the bullet character and again it doesn't matter if i urlencode these characters.
We consider these bugs in the browsers.
FF and Opera work 100% as expected though.

Looks like chrome does not like your replacing of the #'s.
You replace the # by %5eh but shouldn't it be %23?

Looks like chrome does not like your replacing of the #'s.
You replace the # by %5eh but shouldn't it be %23?
I replace # by ^h, a special LFS character as of z26
# gave immense problems when used in urls in IE, even if urlencoded. IE just urldecodes them again and then gets confused. So we replaced # with ^h. Unfortunately Chrome doesn't like ^ along with a lot of other characters. Not much we can do about that except invent a whole new urlencoding (which we won't).
btw, to know what I really send to your browser you must look at the source code. Do not rely on the info bar at the bottom of your browser.

IE and Chrome seem to have a mind of their own regarding launching applications from an url. FF and Opera leave the string to pass untouched while IE and Chrome do some sort of processing on them. During this process they think the 'url' is still an internet url so they apply some internet-url logic to it, like that it must end with a slash. But there cannot be a hash character before the first slash in a normal url, so then they decide to just insert a slash before the first hash. Host not found.
Also when IE encounters ' #' (space hash) it just strips the space. Again, host not found.
Chrome bogs down on certain characters in general and doesn't even run the url-associated program.
I can go on like this for a while.

sounds really odd... According to the msdn eben Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer handle such url's different. And thats why they also state "To avoid this issue, application protocol handlers and their associated URL scheme must not rely on encoding. If encoding is necessary, protocol handlers should use another type of encoding that is compatible with URL syntax, such as Base64 encoding" ^^
morpha
21st November 2009, 19:20

Nice just tried it.
the join works fine, but when a server has a pass we must type it in lfs.
Using join2lfs you can store some hosts with their passwords or type the pass before lfs start.
Is there any possibility to have something similar?
Well done again :thumb:

Installed without uninstalling Join2LFS.
lfs:// links in Firefox were still opened with Join2LFS, so I had to manually change the application to LFS.exe.
There seems to be a problem with passworded servers. Join2LFS would give you a box to enter the pass before connecting, the new way does not give you the opportunity and you just get the 'Host requires password' message when LFS tries to connect.

You'll probably have LFS open still. The file LFS.exe is then locked and cannot be overwritten.
Or you've got a file ownership permission problem (hence we advice against installing LFS in Program Files).

Since the updater file is less than 2 megas, don't expect it has any dds file inside

Hi, Win XP:
installer (the Z25-Z26) works flawlessly, aswell as file associations, but connecting via URL link in Opera doesn't (check after quote). One thing I noticed is that README_Z26.txt wasn't created.
I plan to keep my last LFS version of current physics and install new full patch in different folder, so one quick question about how file associations will be handled with multiple LFS installations:
- after new patch(s) installation, will the associations (should I chose to install them) then be tied to that new LFS.exe location?
Opera didnīt work here!
If i install Z26 it works just ONE TIME!
There is a entry in Opera (Watch attachment) with a %1 behind?
Confirmed, I'm also using Opera (10). When Opera asks you 'Do you want to proceed?' and you tick on 'Do not show this dialog again' before clicking Yes - Opera automatically adds protocol but with the '%1' at the end. After trying to connect second time you get 'No registered application for this extension' error message. If you leave 'Do not show this dialog again' unticked before clicking Yes - then it will always work.
But if I add 'lfs' protocol in Opera manually, or edit the existing one (with the '%1') by tieing it to LFS.exe myself - then it works fine. Only then the grayed out location with '%1' remains visible and can't be deleted - an eyesore (attachment, don't mind folder name saying it's Z25 - it's patched to Z26). Would be cool if possible to fix.

Yes, forgot about the port number. In fact, there could be even more parameters in the url that LFS would parse and use. Or some info in the url itself like allowed cars so that you know what cars and options are used before you even attempt to connect.

I see there was installer update since this thread been made because now with the bulgarian version of the translation done when i redownload the updater and run it, it automaticly goes to english.
Its not problem for me but im wondering how to make it work with bulgarian.
PC is ran on up-to-date XP sp3 and Bulgarian is selected in every place possible in the "Regional and language options" at CP.

you may have already have a setup-installed LFS? If so your language choice from previous install would be rememebered. If there is no 'cookie', you will get the language selection diaglog.

Yea i have it already installed but then again it was installed with Bulgarian selected as an option.
Edit
It works ideally now. Used the uninstaller then the updater with selected language, when done and reran the updater its all fine.
Thanks.

Or just base64'd hostname.
As suggested by GeForz
But it should work with urlencode and hash escaped to ^h, the advantage being that it's still somewhat readable.

It shows that it canīt install these things.
I dont know why :shrug::shrug:
The write-protection was shut off and LFS wasnt open.
It couldnīt install the language packes etc etc

If you have Mozilla, go to Tools > Options > Applications, set "always ask" at "lfs" row, or perhaps go to "application properties" and if there's an application selected, Remove it. Then restart your browser and try again from the hostjointest.

I'm not sure if to report this here. I was playing in CAD DD server, we were going to change track, after changing track and starting the first race, everyone (32 people) was alone! Like everyone was in their own dimension, after 5 secs, this happened:

Thanks for the update.
However, I think that password support for lfs://... links is a must.
If it is not going to be present in next official path, than I hope it will still be possible to use Join2LFS-style links instead, yes?

You are trying to open the new link with Join2LFS, not with Z26. The weird thing would be if it worked fine.

OK, this took most of the day, it's more complicated than you might think! :)
This attached exe stores the password of any host that you have entered a password for. It should work which ever way you enter the "Join specific host" screen :
- from the list of games
- by searching for a player online
- by using the /join command from a command line
- by clicking "Join specific host" (if you type the name of any other host it will retrieve that host's password)
It should work regardless of colours or of case (blackwood xfg xrg should retrieve the same password as Blackwood XFG XRG).
It removes the entry if you manually clear the password (you can check that in the debug messages).
Also if you use the /pass command on a command line (in conjunction with /join) that should overwrite any password that you have used before, and store the new one.
EDIT : Test LFS.exe removed - update available below :

Please don't lol. I think you have explained what you have explained as clearly and as detailed as possible :)

Thanks a lot for the new stored password system. Works great. Never though it's going to be that quick :thumb:
I only found one issue with it:
Also if you use the /pass command on a command line (in conjunction with /join) that should overwrite any password that you have used before, and store the new one.
It works ok from the command line, but I can't figure out how to invoke it from url link - I tried the follwong but neither works:
lfs://join=hostname&pass=abc
lfs://join=hostname,pass=abc
lfs://join=hostname|pass=abc (lfs://join=hostname%7Cpass=abc)
Another issue with Z26, that will be a problem for people currently using Firefox and Join2LFS.
After I installed Z26 using full installer and checked lfs:// links association, they were still opened by Join2LFS instead (Firefox 3.5.5). Firefox did not ask which application to use. I've found two solutions: Uninstall Join2LFS or manually change "Open with" application in Firefox options.
Suggestion: LFS installer should force Firefox to ask which application to use (from the list of registered lfs:// handlers) upon next click on some lfs:// link.

btw, Firefox is MUCH faster than Chrome. In real life, not in benchmarks, of course.

Not good thing to humiliate other people..I was just trying to help, I hope you know that now.
Look like LFS wants you to use only FF or Opera, why I have to use them, if they are using twice more memory and slower. :really:Not at all, we spent many hours on Friday and Saturday working to make it work on all browsers.
I'm pleased the host list test works, that means the LFS World links will work when we do update them (when this new version becomes official).
We don't usually change the websites for test patches.
It works ok from the command line, but I can't figure out how to invoke it from url link - I tried the follwong but neither works:
lfs://join=hostname&pass=abc
lfs://join=hostname,pass=abc
lfs://join=hostname|pass=abc (lfs://join=hostname%7Cpass=abc)How about :
lfs://join=hostname%20/pass=abc
Most normal text should work fine but it is advisable to put %20 for a space so it works on all browsers. Also # is a problem, use ^h for #
Byku
23rd November 2009, 09:54
lfs://join=hostname%20/pass=abc
This link works well, the host and password fields are filled automatically.
(using FF 3.5.5)
In Opera it... well... doesn't work, it says that "there is no application to use with that extension"(or smth. like that).
Question: If someone has FF and Opera installed at once, is LFS only "integrating" with the deafult browser? FF in my case.

We save slot of time on this, leaving the game, finding password then typing it in, now you can just save it :)

Hello,
I want write only my view on autoinstall and install setups.
I very like the LFS packed in ZIP file!!! It is best and clean solution, and very easy, to unzip the file and run lfs.exe - I like it!
I NOT prefer the setup files and autoinstall files, mainly NOT "*.msi" installation files, or some Microsoft installers - it is biggest garbage!
LFS is very good and clean software!!! It is not write or leave garbage files in the OS system or registers!!!
Dear developers, please leave it so clean as before.
I understand that some people prefer the autoinstall or setup files, so make it for them, but make it so easy and clean as you write in first topic. Make only easiest and simplest installer what unzip the LFS do determinated drive and folder, make few icons and it's all. Please DO NOT make the extensive installer what write many garbage files to OS system and garbage items to register.
My suggestion is, that if you make the some installer - OK, but leave also possibility to download the clean ZIP file version, what can be unpacked as before without installation processing.
Thank you.

We found there were more problems with some host names.
This required a change in LFS's interpretation of the command line and also on the test host page.
I hope that now you can join all hosts, from this page (but not LFS World, yet) :
http://www.lfsworld.net/hostjointest.php
This attached exe (as in the previous one) stores the password of any host that you have entered a password for.
It removes the entry if you manually clear the password.
If you use the /pass command on a command line, e.g. LFS.exe /join=hostname /pass=password the new password should overwrite any that you have used before.
Also I reduced the minimum view height in SHIFT+U mode (it makes it a bit easy to see underground but maybe the good outweighs the bad).
WARNING : PLEASE BACKUP YOUR EXISTING Z26 - THIS TEST IS NOT A REAL Z26 AND YOU CANNOT UNLOCK WITH IT

Make only easiest and simplest installer what unzip the LFS do determinated drive and folder, make few icons and it's all. Please DO NOT make the extensive installer what write many garbage files to OS system and garbage items to register. That is exactly what we have done. We are the same as you, we despise programs that write garbage all over the registry or hard drive.
You can even install LFS using this installer, then you can run the uninstaller, which you can choose between :
1) complete wipe of LFS folder and all registry items (file associations etc)
2) leave LFS folder and remove all registry items (at this point you have the same result as using a self-extracting archive)
It doesn't add much to the registry if you switch off all options when you install.
It does however write at least one value to the registry :
Install folder and language selection (so that the uninstaller knows how to uninstall LFS).

By the way, exactly which hostnames worked badly? Just to test.
Edit: I see that the garage screen now uses the x_CARS.jpg image to show all cars, so aren't the old images (x_XRT etc.) needless to be included?
