Also, when the new patch does come out, if it fixes exploits, how long will it take for the new setups to come out? how will you know if the set you are downloading is using the now fixed expoloit that will actually make your car slower?

www.liveforspeed.net. :)

Hello Racers. We would like to announce a new feature at LFS World : SMS Alerts and SMS Messages!

You can now send text messages to other LFS racers, from LFS world or from inside LFS! You can also set SMS Alerts, to be informed of new hotlap world records or receive a message when one of your buddies goes online. We have given all S2 racers two free messages, for test purposes... so we recommend you go and enter your mobile phone number and try out an Alert or a Message. If you like it then you may wish to pre-pay for more messages (can be done on LFS World). They are all charged at £0.12 - both national and international.

See what it's all about in the LFS Alerts window and the LFS Messages window, at www.lfsworld.net

On the simulation side, things have been coming along well. Eric has recently worked some more on the Aston track, including graphical improvements, texture changes and a new configuration (or two). Scawen has worked on some aerodynamic improvements, most notably, the drag and downforce from wings work correctly depending on their real angle of motion, not just the user setting. A recent push on tyre physics has resulted in much better tyres which have improved the car handling and driving experience a lot. We have also been experimenting with another interesting feature as well... :)

Don't we already have enough configs for Aston? If you ask me, we only have 2 good configs for it. Westhill National anyone? Or KY Superüberextralongfriggin' 14km?

Does his statement regarding the angle of spoilers mean that high nose setups won't work anymore?

EDIT: makes you think that the extra feature they're playing with is core physics based?

The high-nose sets won't work anymore - that was part of the reason for needing the patch so bad. The other feature could be chassis flex or extra grip on the racing line, both of which are core physics... apart from that I don't see any other physics improvements needed... maybe asymetric suspension settings...

Doesn't make me think that.

Anyhoo, sort of fairly interesting LFSworld update. Good for people who are too lazy to start their computer up to see if they want to play on their computer with their friends....... .......and for people who simply must respond within the hour to someone taking their wr.

I'm confused about the wing angle thing. Victor said that the downforce and drag depends on the actual wing angle, not the value in the setup. Therefore it takes into account the car body angle (and thus the angle of attack of the wing, so less downforce when braking hard for example and a degree of pitch sensitivity (great)), but does it also mean that the wing angles are visible on the cars? Like, can we see that the oval cars are on little wing and SO cars are on high wing settings????? I like surprises, but at the same time they're so annoying. I've always been crap at waiting for Christmas to open my presents - I always like to give a little shake and a guess beforehand :p

Shotglass

In single player, there's a place where you can set your difficulty level from Newbie to Pro. The main difference is in how many credits you get for winning a race(More for Pro). Since no one in the racers database has a rank yet, it must be new on LFSWorld. Maybe it'll be a profile option for players to rank themselves according to how experienced they feel they are?

SMS Alerts? I can take them or leave them. I would have rather had the web alerts integrated into LFS so if a friend goes online when I'm in the middle of a race I can get in-game notification. Driving and mobile phones are a bad combination on real roads and on virtual roads as well! :D

yeah i really dont get the purpose of sms since when u need anything lfs related u should be near a computer...You can think of scenarios where it can be useful...

Let's say you don't want to sit next to your computer the whole time, and instead you want to watch TV (for example). Then one of your friends can go online and you could receive the alert that he's on a host. Or he (or any LFS user) could SMS you from in-game, without you having to give anyone your number.

The other thing I like is just SENDING an SMS. It's so easy to just type in a message instead of using that number pad on the phone. And it's cheap for international messages - on my phone they are 20p. From LFSW they are only 12p.

I just like to add something to that. For leagues it can be pretty usefull. During the 24h race I had to leave MSN, IRC, Ventrillo and whatnot on just to make sure someone could wake me up in case the server would crash. Using a phone it's a lot easier.

I wouldn't think that would be fessible, unless you were going to pay for that message.
There are thousands of licenced LFS'ers, and the devs would still have to pay some sort of fee per text message, most SMS service providers charge between 3c and 8c per message. So even if it's only 3c per message multiply that by 10k and you have a nice bill :tilt:

Well they will still work, but will be far less effective and have some negitive effects. Running with a nose high set will still mean less downforce but the amount of lifting force counteracting the downforce of the undertray will be correctly caculated and applied, resulting in a smaller advantage, which will also have the disadvantage of reducing grip.

mkinnov8
4th April 2006, 13:59
I see the possible use for this SMS system for League Administrators and Server Admins etc, but even then, without good customization facilities.. But I can see the use for the organister-group of people, even so, 12p a message may not be considered to be a lot for some people, if thats per message and there are 20 people in a League, thats £2.40 per message sent. Which could also be per-session, depending upon use...

Is there a character limit to these text messages?

For people joing online, to alert friends etc, I cant see this being used that much, its more of a novelty feature, and personally, I dont see what value other than that it adds to Live For Speed - Online Racing Simulator.

[NOTE] The above is just my opinion, which is there to be commented upon.

With any luck it should cause the front wheels to lift up beyond a certain speed, and if you don't start braking, the lift force will go exponential (the nose lifting creates more lift at the front, and so on), and the car should back flip like the Mercedes at Le Mans '99 (I was there :D).

Oh how fun that would be to watch, with 20 back flipping FO8s at the oval. I so wan't to be online the first race people try out their old high nose sets. :D

... but nothing customized rss wouldnt add aswell while actually being useful for a greater number of people.
Am i being too argumentative? :)
It's true that rss would be nice, and I have also been talking a bit with vic about that (rss feed, dynamic bookmarks, seo, problem of not finding anything LFS-related, lfs-wiki not being accessible enough, etc.), but it's also NOT mainstream yet.
Most people use internet explorer and have no clue what the internet really is ;)
Even the best website structure is not enough, people are just too stupid or too lazy to find those websites. I dont wanna know how many demo racers have never visited ANY of the LFS websites out there.

But this is a general problem of the whole society - people are watching instead of seeing. People dont READ what they have to read. And specially, people think they know better than others, even though they have absolutely NO CLUE :)
"pääätch pääätch.." :pillepall :D

Some people think the devs owe them making a new patch, just because they have sent them some money, but they dont realize that they are damn lucky people because they can even play LFS.
You gave them money for playing the game, you are playing it. Why do you even want more? I dont get it really...

What we REALLY need is some sort of online system with mods from the comminity, so the devs dont have to do any work there except keeping it running, which is baisically like the forum, but it is sorted in a way that it makes sense. You will have many categories for "problems", like hardware, wheel, etc, and users can post problems, and all the solutions will be stored in any parent category, in which it will fit. For example, info about Force Feedback problems can be found in the wheels thread, but also in the LFS menu thread, for the case that the settings are wrong.

And to get all the people there, there must be a link in LFS in font size 72 or something :P

Blimey, who wizzed in your cornflakes this morning....

The type of person you are describing is luckly in the minority in the LFS community.

Also, its not always the case that "people are too stupid or lazy to find things out", but many people just don't have the time to invest in finding out these things, and if it can be made simple and easy, why not?.

As for the devs oweing us a patch, well, they do, in basic terms the current version is not what was promised when people brought S2, so they havent delivered what we payed for....yet.

Don't get me wrong, I feel I have had WAY more than £24 worth of entertainment out of LFS, and if they stopped developing today heck yeah, it would be a shame.

We are lucky that we have LFS, but you must not forget WE pay for it, its not free, its not produced purely for the love of it, it is a business

Show me something that was "promised", which isnt there :P

You payed for S2 and they delivered S2, where's the problem?
"It is an aplha" - yes, but you can drive all the cars and tracks that were planned for S2, and you dont buy a game, you buy a license to drive those cars on exactly those tracks :)

-> The devs dont owe you anything :)

Btw, nobody did anything with my cornflakes (which I dont eat anyway :D ), it's just annoying that so many people dont even know what they bought, and that they are all the time moaning about their favourite game...

Additionally, LFS IS "produced purely for the love of it", but you cant live without money, so they cant give it away for free.

Why do people think that saying things that arent overly, gussingly thankfull is moaning?, surely people can express an opinion, be it right or wrong in your eyes, but its just that, and opinion.

I am not moaning, I think as is S2 is a great sim, but it clearly isnt what the devs intented to be S2 otherwise it would have the "alpha" moniker, people brought S2 FULL not alpha, not beta, not anything else, S2.

Regardless of how much "love" (LFS S2 - now with 100% more love) its still a business.

Well I didnt say you are moaning :P
You just seemed to shelter people who tend to know better than the devs.

Sure does :).

I am not sheltering anyone, its just that some people get a bum rap on this forum for not "following the crowd", and it grinds my gears sometimes.

People are allowed to have an opinion, be it the right one or the wrong one, as long as they dont express it in an "out of order" manner.

[...]Most people use internet explorer and have no clue what the internet really is ;)
Even the best website structure is not enough, people are just too stupid or too lazy to find those websites.[...]

Sorry Orion, but I find the above comment a tad offensive, and not a little arrogant. You shouldn't take a shotgun approach like that just because you disagree with a couple of people.

My guess for the surprise is a "Reverse-Button" and/or a slider for the replays! :thumb:

That would just be great! Oh my god I'm getting horny thinking of it! :D

Hehe the only people that get "sheltered" round here are the devs :)

People keep asking for things because they know that, eventually, they will get something, and it will obviously be something that they have paid for already. Which leads to "I've paid for it, tell me about it and I want it yesterday" sentiments.
I'm sure the devs know what the score is, which is why they've sadly been getting quieter and quieter over the years.

Yes it is offensive, and one can think I'm arrogant (even though I'm absolutely not), but IT IS TRUE :)

Or can you tell my why only (roughly estimated) 5-10% of all LFS players are using this forum, and <5% LFSworld?
I mean, all info about LFS can be found in this forum. But there are so many people who dont visit it, and say things like "LFS is dead" or "the devs are having a nice time with our money, being damn rich". Everyone who visits the forum regularly, will know that none of the above statemants has even a lic of truth in it.
People are maoning that there is no info about LFS, but we have so many new and interesting things in this forum every day.
They just dont read them.

Btw, I dont disagree with anyone, some people just dont know where they can find help. We have seen many users logging in here and posting questions that have already been answered like 200 times. This is not bad - actually every question is great, and every user who this community could help is great, but the answers must be accessible for anyone, also for those, who havent tried to type "LFS" into google yet. :)

And not doing so, isnt really a proof for intelligence if you ask me... does this really sound that arrogant? :Looking_a
Or, of course, lazyness. People use google and only click the first 1-3 results. If they dont directly find what they want, they give up.

btw just out of interest, does anyone know how many people have actually bought LFS and s2? i was wondering the otherday how much the devs actually make out of LFS. It was just a thought, in no way am I trying to have a go at the way LFS has been developed. But to be truthful and honest when i was licensed as s1 i was wondering what is happening with this game and whether the devs continued the development but that was because i wasnt involved on the forums and lack of news and patience made me worried. As soon as i have joined many question i had were answered and become clear and now i am fully behind the way LFS is being developed and wouldnt change a single thing. What those three guys are doing is trully amazing!!! keep up the great work.

The problem is though many people will see games like gtr, rfactor, gtr2 and say lfs should be like them, have a massive team and get developped quickly but what they dont see that the way those sims are made is purely to make money and lots of it, also the support from the teams is lacking after their product has been released and it doesnt feel like a proper community. LFS on the other hand feels like a community which is what i really like....

Anyway back to the first question, how much money has been made with LFS? 24 pounds per user assuming they have updated from s1 and if not 12 pounds then.... and how many users are there? :scratchch someone must know

Iirc, Scawen said already a could of months ago, that the amount of S2 users is somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 racers.
When you take into account, that they have been working on LFS for around 5 years now (when was Black&White released again?), and substract all the spendings for Servers, etc., it's not really much money for each of them.

yo Orion,

Hats off to the guys!!! They do it beacuse they love it ohh and US :D and all those earnings over a 5 year development must disappear pretty quickly id imagine..

100 000?! I remember reading 10 000-20 000 and S1 licenses another 10 000.

100 000?! I remember reading 10 000-20 000 and S1 licenses another 10 000.

Well, lets calculate then. lets say 15000 S2, plus 10000 S1? We get to 40000 S1 licenses then.
40000 * 18,- Euros = 720000 Euros

720000/3devs=240000/dev

240000/dev/5years=48000/dev/year

Tax, costs etc.: 50%
24000/dev/year. Well, that's quite a normal to lower income. Besides it is all based on some speculative numbers. What if it's only 20000 S1 licenses overall? Etc. etc....

Taking the fact into account, that all of the tree work like 60-80 hours on LFS...

What is the bottom line then?
They did not earn enough yet, to leave for Fidjis ;)

I hear this a lot. I believe that ISI, the development house behind rFactor, is made up of just 7 people. Sure, that's more than the 3 that comprise the LFS team but not by much. Blimey! Games, the team behind GTR, GTL and GTR2, on the other hand, is large. Here's a list of their team members: http://www.blimeygames.com/about.php
