Hello guys!

Overview
I am holding a competition that requires knowledge when it comes to creating a sim cockpit. I am looking for someone to design a cockpit for my own private use, that follows my needs for a cockpit.

Winning Prize:

Live for Speed £36 Voucher

Runner Up:

Live For Speed £24 Voucher

How to win:
1. Come up with a cockpit design. Include exact dimensions, sizes and any sort of information that is required. They can be drawn, rendered or 'shopped, but it must be detailed! I would perfer the design is digital, as it is more accurate. Measurements need to either be in centermeters or millimeters.
2. Post your design in this thread.
3. Make sure you add some sort of copyright so no one can take your work or use it for themselves, unless you are fine with that.
4. Winning design will have the full details sent over to me by email, PM etc. This is where i can use these to design it myself.
5. Winning design will shortly (no more then a week, from 1 day to 5) be given a voucher for their prize.
6. You will then have to register yourself, and download what is needed, or whatever is required from there.

Specifications:

The design will be made out of MDF wood, so make sure you understand what can be done with MDF. No bars/framing etc, just a shell pretty much.
Design cant exceed anything over 170cm (1.7m) (1700mm) in length. Width is up to you. However, it needs to be wide enough to fit a racing/car seat and a G25 shifter OR even the SST lightning shifter.
Nothing from the design involved bending the MDF. Curved design is encouraged, but as the frame only.
Inside the cockpit must have a spot where the G25 shifter can fit.
Post views from Front, side, top, rear etc with all exact messurements.
The shape and design itself that im after is something like a Hyper Stimulator cockpit. Not an exact of it, but something that seats you in that position. Nothing where you are in a computer seating position, but rather an Open Wheel seating position. Infact, The Hyper happens to be almost what i was after, but without modifications, you cant fit the G25, Plus the price is alot, and they have stopped making Hypers. The cockpit will include a racing seat though, or just even a car seat. There needs to be a spot to put an LCD monitor on it (min 22" size)
Im after a very professional design. Nothing basic or simple, where its almost 3 peices of MDF stuck together to make the shape of a box.

The design its self isnt ment to be made by the user, just the design itself with exact messsurements etc for me to build myself.

http://www.racefightclub.com/images/rfc_hyper.png
When you look at this image, it puts you in a open wheeler environment. Its not just a basic box design out of MDF that could have been made in two minutes. The edges are rounded, theres elevation, creativity. Thats what im after. (not something looking identical to this).

IF DESIGN QUALITY IS PROFESSIONAL and VERY CREATIVE with NO FLAWS OF DETAIL IN MESSUREMENTS ETC, I WILL BE HAPPY TO ADD MORE TO THE PRIZE.
IE: The better the entry is, the better the prize. (Minimum will be 36£ voucher still)

After i have created the designed cockpit, all credits for design will go to the winning entry, where ever it may be posted.

If you need any more specs, feel free to ask.

GOOD LUCK!!

wow, this is definitely out of my depth.

(btw isn't the project a bit too complicated for such a relatively "small" price, if you don't mind me asking.)

This is kinda getting a tough job done for a small price.
Nice though.

The prize should have been more, maybe a car or something, nah. But maybe a g25 or something.

Well, this is stuff that interest me - Make stuff with your hands. And I wouldn't mind try give it a proper go design something proper.

A few things I'd need to know though...

How big is your monitor? Is it going to hang on a wall in front of this 'model' or do you want it to get a place 'on the model' ?

I also need to know how big the G25 pedals are, like:
http://i33.tinypic.com/dxzfxt.jpg
(I need to know x & y.)

Would also like to know how big the wheel is, something like this, how big is the it from center and out?
http://i36.tinypic.com/2920ls9.png

And, how far from the 'chair/seat' would you like the pedals to be placed?

More q's to come...

Oh just to clear things up, im assuming some people think they need to build the design itself. The competition is after say, "Blueprints" for a design, for ME to build. :) You dont need to go into a workshop or anything.

Ill post up dimensions of the G25 soon.

Also, ive made this competition because i was in need of a cockpit design, and rockingham is being released with S3, so i thought maybe give the community a chance to design me a cockpit, and ill give out a voucher or two, seeing how we are going to be able to by an S3 licence, it would come in handy. And dont forget what the OP said, if im really wowed by a great design that is worthy more of just 36GBP, ill up the prize more.

If you dont have a serious entry, why post one up?

Thanks anyway.

Here's my(cough) idea for an MDF cockpit.

Thats actually VERY nice mate! I would bring the wheel closer, while sort-of "stretching out the cockpit. Add specific dimensions etc for the whole dessign and id say thats one that will shine! :)

Still waiting for my previous questions to be answered ;)...

aoun
23rd September 2009, 14:52
Wheel radius is approx. 13.5cm (135mm) or full length of wheel from side to side is approx. 27cm (270mm).

Pedals are approx. 30cm in width and 38-40cm in length.

The wheel from my chest, roughly 30cm too, no less then maybe 27cm, no more then 50cm. Between 30-35cm would be ok.

Oh and, the screen is a 22'' LCD screen, though i might be getting a 26" if im lucky. Either way its roughly going to be that size, nothing HUGE. And the screen im hoping to have apart of the cockpit, it wont be on a wall mount or anything.

MariusMM
23rd September 2009, 18:55
Thanks for that, but... You didn't answer this question:
"And, how far from the 'chair/seat' would you like the pedals to be placed?"

Also, another question.

You say you will use a seat/chair - How big? X/Y(check my previous attachments if you dont understand what I mean)?

Well, it does take more than 5 minutes to design and make an accurate drawing.

Sorry for a late reply. I have been all around the place lately.

Pedals to chair. Should not matter too much, go with what you feel is best, and i may modify it myself, if i need to.

Chair size will either be a gokart seat size or a car seat size. I dont have exact measurements for them, ill try to find them out today.

Guys, does it seem like i only have 1 legit entry? just to clear things up! :)

If so, i might close this competition if no one else will enter and just work with MariusMM.

Or here for DIY motion simulator (I'm actually thinking of doing something to my existing Nixim cockpit, reading through the link below it doesn't seem that difficult if you've got a little bit of technical knowhow)

http://www.x-simulator.de/forum/

This is pretty detailed

http://www.0-60mag.com/needforspeedshift/NFS_0-60_R-Cade_hires.pdf

If someone comes up with an original detailed design of there own for 36 quid then I will eat my race helmet.

Damn... I already built my cockpit/ The only problem is it is all frame. :D Never got around to building the shell. :shy:

I like the design of mine. Shifter is in a good location, pedals are angled, wheel at perfect height and I even have myself a real seat from a Pontiac Fiero. I even have a switch panel for my headlights and other things.

I'll see if I can get motivated to design something for you. Something that fits your requirements..
Just one thing, How tall are you?

I might say (while I am here now) that you probably would have got like 20 good suggestions/entries if you had put this comp on http://www.thewayiplay.com/ or RSC http://forum.racesimcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=186.

LOL my bad, i wrote that thinking, thats the abreviation for feet right? (wasnt sure).

I guess i deserve that one! :D

Im 6 foot, but i guess 6" now.

As i stated in a previous post, if no one else really enters this, ill work with MariusMM and i suppose he will get the 36GBP voucher.

However, i held this comp because i wanted a designed cockpit, and wanted to give something back to this community, so that said, after this is over, ill hold another competition with the traditional requirements (ie, quickest lap time, or design a skin etc). I assumed people would have been interested in cockpits and had an intrest with construction.

immediatly thought to find/reinstall autoCAD at the thought of free S3 upgrade but now I think about it, this pc doesn't have a disket drive, and I doubt its much of an autoCAD if its on a disket anyways.

"Google Sketchup (http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/)", it's free and has mm accuracy and is 3D. If you know how to use AutoCAD it's like 5 times easier and quite intuitive. There are video tutorials to teach you everything about it to.
You can export drawings to many formats including DXF IIRC.

I'm more than interested in this.
I think I will try to do something too, using 3Ds Max and Inventor.

Just one thing, I know there are only 2 pages on this thread, but could you please edit your 1st or 2nd post to give all informations you have about the dimensions of the wheel, pedals, distance from pedals, and also your height, preferences for wheel's position, etc?
I think that'd help people a lot.

EDIT : And also, I think what you want is to sit like in one of these images, right?
http://www.virtualracingchassis.com/shop/images/Chassis-026x800.jpg
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m171/el_aurens_2006/Evolution.jpg
In that case, would you prefer to have the shifter next to the wheel or next to the seat?
I'll probably work with one of the 2 images for my design.

Decided to reply rather than edit...
Here's an idea of the position of the driver:
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/3717/lfscockpit1.jpg
Just tell me what you want me to change, the biped in the picture being 180cm tall and the lower box measuring 170cm (I think I can't do something smaller, or you would have to do some gym to fit in your cockpit :really:).

Its pretty self explainatory... get a seat make a box with correct measurements for your comfort and place yer cpu etc in it.
on the inside place a stop block behind the pedals to positions to where u need it. The keyboard can be mounted to the side or whereever seen fit. Ill work on it a little more tomoro when i learn the program and maybe get some blueprints.

Well, I've decided to not give the exact measurements (well, they are there, but the the inside one's isn't very viewable).

I've taken 5 quick shot's of my version. I know the outside isn't very 'cool', however you said no carved forms, so I'm very limited.

Don't care to much about the numbers on there, cause they might make much sense.

Oh and the outside 'color' is to simulate the wood your going to use :).

Nice but seems complex =P.

Also to the requester are u a person who is crazy about looks? Because if you arent i can add a shifter and keyboard mount easily. To a small drawing ill be doing later today (will have measurements and hopefully assembly instructions) if i dont get to it today im sorry. But this will be pretty similar to Marius's but little less complex.

Just to justify that, edges can be curved, but not the actual areas.

Take a look at the first picture in the first post. The wood has curved cuts in it, but the MDF itself isnt bent for the whole area to be curved.

What kind of thickness of MDF were you thinking about?

Can you make a summary of all the specs outlined in previous posts e.g dimensions of the Wheel and accessories wanted.

Being a budding engineer this seems like the perfect project to do and possibly something to put on my letter of recommendation for going to uni!

Also, would it not be more prudent to have the prize just £36 as opposed to a voucher?

Hey heres some rough measurements.... ill clean it up later.

Basically 5 ft long 2 ft wide or more and 2 ft tall

edit: messed up on the seat area a bit its not supposed to be slanted its supposed to be straight up and down so use your common sense on what it would look like.

Bokujishin
8th October 2009, 16:14
Still haven't finished the rough design, because of school and I'm thinking about what would make my design better.
Here's what I've done so far:
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/5374/lfscockpit3.jpg
The holes in the sides are there to let your arm get to the shifter, because I couldn't have it to fit in the cockpit while keeping an open-wheeler look. However their size and shape aren't finalized yet. I'll also have to add some parts to increase the resistance of the overall structure, as I don't know how it will behave once it's built (if ever built, that is ), and that's why I'm using 2cm thick wood.
Basic measurements will come once I finished the global design, and I will proceed to have a clean thing in Inventor then.

EDIT: Just wanted to give the overall dimensions:
for the moment, I have length: 160cm, width: 88, height: 85cm.
And the part where the shifter lies is also on the left, so you can choose where you want it to be.

logitekg25
8th October 2009, 23:01
if it isnt already, hinge the wheel holder, with a rubber stop in the design for stability and such :thumb:

i tink the hole should be ditched, to then just have the open but have it like a bath tub kinda design

Bokujishin
9th October 2009, 17:05
Do you mean something like the blueish box for the hole?
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9118/lfscockpittest.jpg
If so, I think the difficulty would be to keep the shape, because aoun specified that the wood couldn't be curved, but if I keep the bottom-front part as it is now, I could remove the back half of it.

For the hinge, I don't understand where you would put it, and the rubber stop too, could you please explain?

whatever you think will work is great, but my suggestion ws more like (see attachment )

from the looks of it, getting out would be next to impossible, so where the wheel is mounted, you should put a hinge so it can be put up, and where there is a hinge, there should be a rubber stop so when you put the wheel back down, if it slips out if your hand it doesnt hurt anything :thumb:

where i colored black you remove from design, and where i colored red you make the new supports for the wheel, and you would no longer need a hinge to get out, because you have where the shifter isnt :tilt:

EDIT: also you could make the wood holding the shifter have a metal plate attached to it, so you could then have its support relying on butterfly nuts (type of bolt ) and have only one and have it reversable depending on what side you have the shifter on, and dont forget wire harnesses or a place to put them

JasonJ

Looks like a huge effort to get in and out of. Not much room in the opening there. If you go this route then might I suggest a forward & up tilting/hinged wheel plate mount.

Perhaps just widen the whole thing a bit and then you wouldnt need the holes, (which I thought looked really ok)
But hey, I'm not telling you how to design it.

Also if I didn't have easy access to my keyboard & mouse then playing PC games is pretty impossible.

:shy:

Even my cockpit's open design is still a bit of an effort to get into and out of. I must slide the seat back anytime I want to get in or out.

Here's what i'm planning on doing once i have the motor/gearbox out of my spare wreck MR2, i'm going to get a reciprocating saw, and cut the floorpan out from the far side of the centre console to the sill, basically from the rear firewall of the cab, to up where the front firewall is. Tech screw a tray in for the wheel, sit the screen up on it etc, and bam simple cockpit. Hoping i can mount the shifter into the original shifter position too. This will mean i can use the MR2's drivers seat, and also have the option later on of having an outgauge dash fitted in place of the factory dash. Also means i don't have to **** around too much making seat mounts and so on. This isn't a competition entry, just maybe worth thinking about, if you can get a wreck for a couple hundred bucks :)

EDIT: would be even cooler if i could suss out a way to use the MR2's Light switches etc to work in LFS too...

EDIT: And also, concerning the keyboard, can we place it on a support like this?

I can't understand what's the point to make a cockpit? It isn't enough to drive normally by sitting just on the chair? Why it's needy to create such a spaceship and just wasting worthy time on it.

logitekg25

it adds to the effect :)

its pretty much the only way i get to drve anything, so why settle for just sitting in a chair, mine is not too special but it is pretty good, basically you just ased the question why use lfs when need for speed gives you the same thing, just a little less realistic

I can't understand what's the point to make a cockpit? It isn't enough to drive normally by sitting just on the chair? Why it's needy to create such a spaceship and just wasting worthy time on it.
some reasons why:

1) Screen was too high on a normal desk, now with a proper rig my in game dials now appear through the gap (http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6682/sdc11077s.jpg) in g25 wheel opening. Also the g25 wheel super-imposes (hides) the virtual wheel in other games where it cannot be turned off.

2) Pedals are too low in a desk chair. Feels like driving in a 4WD or a bus when your knees are at 90 degrees. I had to raise my pedals up under my desk and they still weren't high enough.

3) Desk chair kept sliding backwards on its castor wheels. Now my chair can be tilted and slide fowards and backwards.

4) $10 Real car seat is twice as comfortable than even a mid-ranged office chair for long stints.

5) g25 shifter can only be mounted to the desk next to the wheel. Now I have the shifter right next to my thigh and also I now have an arm rest.

6) Hard mounted handbrake in a natural position.

7) Keyboard placed behind the wheel or on the side of the desk creates back-ache when typing, now I have my KB at arms rest and I do not have to lean forward to type or to use the mouse.

8) Vibrations from the wheel FFB transfer into the frame and you feel it in your seat.

9) It's fully sick. :D

You have a point.
I did not do mine thinking about simplicity, but thinking about the "open-wheeler feeling" aoun asked, and I think I managed to recreate this. But you're right, it is a bit complicated (especially for the keyboard support, spent a few days thinking :D).
Whether I can win or not, I will soon proceed with the placement of the screws and get the exact dimensions, as it will look better after that (it is supposed to, at least).
The design itself, however, should stay as it is now (except if I find something to change).

My work on Inventor is not finished yet, but I will present the finished version on sunday or before, with the full details (or at least aoun will have them) and some animations (if I can) of the character getting in/out of the cockpit.
I also added a second security to the keyboard shelf, at the opposite side. It should prevent the shelf from falling if you do not slide it all the way inside the cockpit (I might make it even longer for more security).

My render was a bit off btw. If you built it thru my instructions ud get a very open wheeler feel. But im not the best at modeling but i did my best.

Bokujishin
4th November 2009, 10:40
I improved two parts of the design: the hinge lock for the wheel shelf and the "anti-fall security" of the keyboard.
Here are 3 pictures with them:
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/5960/hingelock.jpg
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3450/keyboard1wp.jpg
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/2394/keyboard2.jpg
When you put the wheel shelf on the gaming position, you don't have to hold it anymore, just put it down and it will be placed correctly. Then you just have to lock the hinge with a cylinder or something.
As for the keyboard shelf, the little parts are longer, and the shelf cannot fall anymore when it slides. However, this also means you would have to place it and then screw the security parts on the shelf.
I am currently struggling with the constraints in Inventor, but I should be able to finish it in time.

I just noticed I have not included the overall dimensions of the cockpit, so here they are:
Length: approximately 166cm with the wing, 161cm at ground level up to the screen shelf.
Width: 92cm with keyboard inside (rear end of the sides), 123cm with keyboard outside. Around the screen support, it is 40cm wide (just enough for the pedals to fit in).
Height: 100cm.
These are approximations, the true dimensions are smaller by 0,1 to 0,9cm.
This was just so you get an idea of the place it takes

bmwtwins already has a s2, I think that Bokujishin should get a reward for his hard work.

I really like Bokujishin's idea, I think that im going to make one like this if I can find good wood in our garage. (I also thank him for this design)

Thanks a lot! I'm happy to see many people like my design
But the one to decide will be aoun, so I guess we will have to wait a bit until he anounces the results...

Hey guys.

I would once again like to appoligize for the delays.

My life has been going through alot of changes and "obsticals" and have been focusing on them far more then this competition.

For news,

A winner and runner up will now be announced very soon, just not today.

Thanks to all that have entered. I am happy with the designs submitted, so im going to have a great time putting it all together.

No problem, real life is more important than games etc.
However, I'm starting to get anxious too... I hope we will see you soon for the results.

EDIT: I believe you will use the second post that you reserved to anounce the results, won't you?
I just wanted to know if you were going to simply put the names of the winner and runner up, or if you will make a recap of all the entries before that.
I think a quick recap of the participants/entries could be good to see the different works.

I had already told Aoun that if there was any conselation between me or him winning that he could have it. :) reason I am trying is because my dad's license had been hacked away a few months back and he would like to have 1 again.

Oh, and once you anounced the winner and runner up, as one is from a PM, I hope you will show his design to us.

See you soon for the results.

Just some Idea's.

Why don't you use a F1 Bulit or Adapted Shase?
And also if you want a F1 feel to it get some F1 parts and connect a master computer to LFS then away you GO!!!.

basically saying

1. go out and buy f1 chassis for like $1,000,000
2. steal a whole f1 car from a artic truck during transit and hook up your pc to the f1 car and away you go.

ideas are tarded

Yeah, good idea, there even is a real F1 cockpit in Lyon, France (from a simulator), where he could get some parts... :really:
This competition is here in order to give something back to the community in exchange for a cockpit design, not for some "ideas".

Anyway, still some suspense aoun? :D

I must have typed the wrong thing then  "op stand for", and I got a list with tens of possibilities...
Thanks for the answer.

Here are four images from my design, each is one page, taken randomly from the pdf (pdf is 19 pages long):
