The port is configurable at your server end. Default, if I remember, is 63393. Unfortunately I'm not our server's security guy, and I don't have access to our firewall config. We need to get a definitive guide to setting up a LFS server, and get it stickied I think. Lots of people are wanting to do it and there doesn't seem to be a central source of info on the topic.
[edit] I just found the definitive answer using the forum search...

^^ Brilliant explanation, with all you need to know.. needs to be stickied.

This is where I jump in. ISA 2004 isnt like your average firewall, obviously.
What you need to do is go into firewall policy and create a new server publishing rule. If you just try and create a new access rule it wont work. Since you're using ISA 2004, I'm assuming you understand enough to continue.
My final suggestion would be to make a new "Protocol set" containing all your LFS details, rather than using the ports feature, this will allow you to have a nice bundle.
Feel free to let me know if you need any help :) If it comes down to it, I could probably create a little template for you to import :)

Definitely not! And it seems to me a tad bit overkill if you're just running LFS on it? LOL! :)
That said, making ISA server handle your LFS connections is a breeze once you've covered the basics. Especially if you want to run MULTIPLE servers, even on a single machine! I love it! :)

OK guys. I believe you have the knowledge to help me and any others here to do what I'm asking.
My setup
I have enough spare parts to build a stand alone 2.4ghz P4 1gig ram computer and dedicate it for a LFS server.
I am on a cable connection in my home and I use a linksys WRT54G router.http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1127782957298&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
The server will be on a Cat 5 cable not wireless.
Server will be running Windows XP pro or something you recommend better.
My Request
What will I need have (software) and to do (step by step) to get LFS server setup and running. Be aware I am a geek, just real green on networking. :D
MANY MANY MANY Thanks in advance. :thumb:

First off, you really don't need such power for a server, with only one LFS server running i'd guess that machine would be idling 99.9% of the time. Maybe you can find more stuff to hook up on that machine. :)
To get a server running, get the "LFS S2 ALPHA Q Dedicated Host" from liveforspeed.com (http://www.liveforspeed.net/?page=addons), configure and start it. Open the port(s) for TCP/UDP in/out for the server(s) you're running in your router (General guide on Portforward.com (http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/default.htm)), and you should be all set. Default port is 63392.
If you set up other services on the machine, setting LFS to high or realtime priority could be a good idea.

Ok, thank you.
Something I forgot to mention is, is it not a good Idea to run a server from you main computer, the one you play LFS and do everyday stuff from?
My Main machine is a AMD 4400x2, 2gig ram, XP pro, SLI GT7800 video ....etc.
Thanks again, Filur.

Your machine could probably run 10 LFS servers serving full grids (if bandwidth allows) while you're playing LFS yourself, only reason to set up a dedicated box is to avoid reboots/downtime really. I've served full grids in demo (nearly maxing my upstream) on my 2.4ghz celeron/512mb while running/serving apache, mysql, software firewall, antivirus etc, and running LFS myself.
If you run it on your main box tho, do set the LFS server to a priority level over other things, to avoid lag especially if you're running LFS yourself.
You can see the amount of cpu time used by the server in windows task manager, view->select columns, tick "cpu time", it won't be very much.

Thanks again. hhmmm Good info.
I've done some searching and seems like it might be better to setup a seperate box with linux, apache .....
I have ZERO Linux experiance. :scratchch
My CPU usage stays pretty low unless my EZtrust internet firewall virus software is doing it's thing.

If you have zero linux experience, it's not really worth the trouble for running a single lfs server. :)
Like i said, running on your main pc should work just fine, running on that dedicated machine you were going to put together should work overkill'ishly fine.

Sounds good. :thumb:
borneoblood, sorry for hijacking your post. I hope this may help all the people interested in trying for a LFS server.
From the ping numbers I see in the sim I figure most servers are in countries other than the U.S.

I like the overkill'ishly method Nolan... :thumb:
Then you're just a bandwidth upgrade away from multiple full grid servers!
:D
Do you need more encouragement?

ok folks maybe one of you have the same router as I and can help..
I've read the posts regarding port forwarding..however my starbridge lynx L 210 adsl router doesn't offer an option to change the port forwarding or NAT.
any ideas??..
