Cool programs with little overhead- WindowBlinds uses a lot of overhead in comparison.

Ah ha, with only 8 mb of onboard graphics, I have to change many many things in the options to get screenshots in replays or staged screenshots as this one was. Shadows are just something of the 15 items to change that I missed. But, thanks, I will remember it next time :thumb: .
It's cool to see everyone's wallpapers on their desktops, but I find it more interesting to see what icons they have on the desktop.

And think about how messy his folders and other stuff must be in his harddisk? If you multiply that desktop by 1,000,000 ... you get the idea :)

Only about 30 icons outside the screen :)
It's like that mostly because it was the default download folder for Firefox.. and my laziness has helped quite a bit too. Absolutely no excuse for all those icons, I never even open apps using the desktop (mostly because I can't find anything)

I see PestPatrol on there. Nice! I recommend PestPatrol everytime I see something about spyware and noone ever has heard of it. I had problems with my PC and scanned with all the adware scanners, then PestPatrol found 800 or so files and cleaned it after all the others said I was clean. Even the IT guys at work couldn't get our PC's clean until I told them to use PestPatrol. Awesome program.

Umm, the desktop time is like 2 seconds late from the system time. It's a bug in Konfabulator. Time changed right before I took the screenshot.
I hate resource hungry desktop software/theme shit. Konfabulator isn't resource hungry at all, less than 10mb ram usage, depending on how many Widgets you have running. That's less than Winamps usage for gods sake. Only "system hungry crap", as you put it out, I have running is Konfabulator.
How come would it give you a heart attack? Artistic and simple isn't as good as flooding the desk with hundreds of icons? ;) Looks good, doesn't hog resources. Works for me.

The most resource hungry stuff on there is the Windows theme ;) poorly added using retro code, much like the rest of Windows. Right now there is software on your PC that was made for 95, but then dropped for 98. Just never removed. Which is why Windows XP is so bloadted (2000% bloated, I read on a webby, so not too sure if it is that bad), and why I run Windows XP To The Bone Edition. 200mb setup disc. About 350mb installed :)
Agreed konfab isn't too hard on the old ram, but I did notice that a lot of the widgets I used to run would take a chunk out of my proc >.< But I genearlly run nothing fancy. I think the most fancy thing I have on my whole system is the shadows under icons on my desktop.
As for winamp, v2 was and still is the best version. Much better back then, v5 is a slut :P But then if you get winamp v5 lite, it uses around the same as winamp v2, as it is just that. Much lighter on ye ol' system :)
Matrixi
15th November 2005, 14:54
Well, the thing is, my system can handle it :) I notice no difference in games nor 3DsMax/Photoshop if I have themes/Konfabulator enabled or not. Maybe it does make a big difference if you still dig up that dusty 486 box from the closet ;) I prefer have littlebit eyecandy and little performance lost over to having ugly looking no-theme desk with useless resource gain from it.
I think Winamp 5 is great as-is. I just use classic skins, not those modern resource hogging ones. Winamp 3 is THE pos.

Classic theme (barebone w2k style) uses 2MB less memory than the "bloated one". (mem usage 353 vs 355 here) Displaying few bitmaps don't really use the processor either so I don't see the problem really :) Menus and and such may use the cpu a bit more but then again that's why the cpu is there. And it doesn't matter if youre gaming.
3rd party theme programs and such are different thing though.

350mb... I use that much if I have a lot of unnormal stuff open (like right now I have a lot of development programs open and am using 320mb). My normal useage is only ~210mb o_O
Which is stupid to me, as when I used the old box at home with 256mb I used all sorts of fancy themes and such. Now I have 1gb of ram, and an alround better system. I cut it back to minimal... I make no sense at times.

Running litestep here with a very personally customized theme. 6 desktops with different backgrounds. No icons. Right-click on the desktop for the start menu, as you can see in Desktop2.jpg. Desktop3.jpg shows the task bar hidden (ALT+T hides and shows the task bar). Desktop4.jpg shows a small command line called using WIN+Z. The command line can have pre-defined entries that execute certain programs or tasks. ("!psp" calls photoshop, "!cmx" calls cmx viewer, "!lfss2" runs lfs, etc etc). It is very efficient in terms of getting what you need on the screen as fast as possible. For very commonly used programs such as firefox WIN+B (B for Browser) calls it or WIN+I calls IRC. The backgrounds except the one in Desktop1.jpg are my own works. :smileypul

You're crazy- rF blows most any sim away.. I mean if you are comparing it to LFS, LFS doesn't even have dynamic shadows.. although LFS does look really good, I can say that.
That screen I took looks different every 5 minutes in the game, drastically different nearing sunset or sunrise, and of course, dynamically changing into night, and the daytime again..
Of course rF is completely mod-able so NEW cars and models come out, with higher resolution than stock cars, also new tracks, higher res track textures, etc, etc, etc..
If you don't have the game, you can't talk, I have both.
I guess of course if you like octagon wheels LFS is your thing.. HAHA.. :smileypul

EDIT- I just don't see how people can say that looks horrible... I am an artist.. and have an eye for things that look good, at least to me.. :scratchch I think the GFX in both games are great, in different ways.

I do own both. I've played both (although rF really didn't impress me at all apart from the brake squeal, which was nice).
And you're comparison pic just looks more washed out. Neither of your pictures look remotely real. Fantastic 3D models, high res textures, custom made tracks and whatever else rF might or might not have count for ZILCH if the end result looks rubbish.
I'd rather have LFS's realistic look (even if it does have funny shaped wheels at times) over rFactors 'Manga' look. It's the reason I doubt rF will ever be installed again. Okay, thats exaggerating, I'd be a fool to do that. I will reinstall it eventually, and try the various mods. But not yet. Rf is too crap at the moment to warrent the installation.

My current desktop, the icons are from Icon Factory (see link), they're a Mac set but will work on Windows. I have found a freeware program that changes system icons better than any other program.
For those who don't know it the drop stuff and expander shortcuts are for Stuff It the best free archive program IMO, just simply drop an archive onto the shortcut and it extracts the files, saves a load of time, making archives is just the same in reverse. You need to download the Standard trial which includes the free version in it.

Does rFactor really look that crap in game? To me every screen I've seen has looked very artificial and I never got the MP test to run, it may look better in motion, but anyone who says that screen looks good doesn't see a screen in the same way my eyes do.
IMO LFS doesn't look very real, instead it looks like simple 3D graphics, and is easy to read and understand, no need for fancy lighting in a sim, the more visual stuff you add all over the screen the harder your brain has to work to see it as being real. I don't want LFS to look 'real' with fancy lighting, instead I would like it to be a simple image that my brain can think is real. It's why I find GPL completely drivable with the standard textures in a decent resolution, obviously I don't use the original 7 year old textures, but if I had to I could because it doesn't have a load of fancy effects covering up whats actually important to be able to see.

As some people posted before I've started using Litestep. So much better than windows, the graphics are .png based (unlike XP's stupid .bmps) and some themes like the one I posted bellow use no graphics at all. Doesn't have to be minimal, that's just the way I like it. The great thing about Litestep is that it's nearly all done using text files.
:: l i t e s t e p . n e t :: (http://www.litestep.net/)
This system shell is only 2kb, no graphics, much much faster than the windows shell.

Don't know where I got the desktop from, I cut it down to the widescreen look, how I set all my desks and the black background is added to the image so I can just select it from my folder full of wallpaper and it sets right even when strech is selected. Attached a few of my favourite wallpapers :)

I used to play GT4 alot, even though it's not half as real as LFS I still thought it was a good game and when I got bored of the racing aspect of it I tried taking pictures.
Shame that it wasn't a cooler car as the picture I think is really cool with the 1337 spoiler on the civic :P I change it alot though, depends on when I get bored of the old one.
Mr_x, nice desktop, not really a geordie fan but like the music your playing.

BTW, smetimes ago, some of my shortcuts were out of the screen, so I had to make some folders and put some files in them to gain place :tilt: , but it is not a good solution, I will take some time to clean all those (unuseful) things :)

It's a piece of my work..."a kinda vector" thing I did from a photo that I found somewhere. Since it's done with photoshop [bitmap] not illustrator [vector] strictly speaking it ought to be called a "digital painting"

Yes, your desktop is kept in ram/cache so it loads faster. The more clutter you have on there the more it needs to store all the time.

So how come I have 2 icons on my desktop and the Commit charge is 17,000?
That seems not likely to me. Since that's how big it was with IconX and 1/4 of it filled
P5YcHoM4N
13th January 2006, 05:00
Because other things, such as themes and what not add to it. The peak commit on my rig is 451,512K, which means I don't even use half my ram, and a tad more heavy then normal, but my current use is 388M ¬_¬ I really need to format my PC. I've installed too much crap and one HDD is shot. But then again, it's mostly big files that make the difference (anything over 2kb mostly), but the bigger the file the more it hogs. Slap a 60mb file on your desktop. You'll see it jump.

Much lighter on ye ol' system :)
gimme proof of that "bone(ed)" system like an image for install. :D
after that, WHO CARES? systems a getting blow-up and faster the same time...
don't believe me?
well i assume you have a facillity for programming, then tell me how the Moore law of everlasting speedup can be achieved if clock ratings stagnate?
RIGHT, parallel processing...
and therefore more cpu's to load with tons of fancy shit noone really needs.
so we work, consume, spend our money, have kids, bomb ourselfes back to stoneage and there we are... freed of all-Time-communicativity.
sorry for dramatic here but please tell me what difference does a bone sys make these days as windows ÍSN'T capable of real time responses in the first place nor could for example be used for steering model-planes or helicopters.
the latency is just too long.
then back to response times, ok you may have a point for a smooth running system, but for what cost in setup this machine?
not to imagine what effort to take if parts change or machine dies...
someone said to me, always running to be the first is pointless as there'll always be a better one, or some hot head shooting you of track, but that another story.
sorry for offensive posting, but i had a friend like you always the programmer always the neatest little progs in mind, who ended up insane<img> in hospital...

How I wish I could. I seem to have left most of my OS CD's at home. Though I can get to the bone from my mate next time I'm in uni.
It's one thing giving us more processor power, but when the OS you use leaches most of it the gains are limited, which is why so many people like to strip their OS to nothing, to save as much CPU time as possable, so their big investment isn't wasted just running rubbish.
No, agreed Windows is sheddy as far as OS's go, but I play games, a lot. Thus I like the easy Windows has for playing games, it isn't perfect, but every little helps.
The cost of a my box. First build £250. Referb 1, it was £350, referb 2 hit £500. Computers are like Moores law, never ending black hole for money.
Changing dead hardware is simple. Yestarday I did my most recent work on my PC. Change a graphics card, added a sound card and a new 300gb HDD. The only problems with the new graphics card is I can't put my Zalman cooler on it, and it's so long it almost didn't fit in my case:
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/6667/ccam4xs.jpg
5mm clearance sucks. But good job I don't use all the slots in my HDD cage.
I don't run to be first, I just run at speeds that gets all my games 75fps (vsync'd) with full eyecandy.
As for going insane. I spent about 2 months in a mental home, I don't think a few programs will change anything.
