View Full Version : falsestarts?

Hi there, this is my little idea. Everytime the race starts almost everybody put the throttle to the metal and only wait for the green litght to show up. Couldn't it be like in the practice mode? For people who made a falsestart it could be a time penalty or even a disqualification. It could be a cool element of race and it would depend on player's technique and reflex ;).
And a small request. Could it be possible to change the button in controls for hazard lights? Every time I want to thank somebody kind for pulling over and let me go on the blue flag, I must reach for my keyboard. If it could be possible I would like to have the button for the hazards somewhere on the wheel for example.
Sorry for my badly English.

Really love both of your ideas. Dear devs please implement this. :9.

I've thought about that too, and i think, being such an important element of racing, it already has to be pretty high on the developers' TODO -list.

Although actual starts do sound nice, I think it would increase problems with wreckers and noobs (maybe unintentionally) ruining races and causing irritation... But as I said, it sounds nice, if only 'cause it adds to the realism. :tilt:
And about your button question, most wheels come with drivers or "profilers" that let you map keyboard keys to your wheel, so it makes LFS think your wheel button is actually the 9 or something.

Yeah I'm not against the idea of more realistic starts but there is something to be said for the simplicity of the current system in LFS. Also it's not correct to say that you can simply give full throttle all the time at the start. Different cars require different throttle amounts and modulation to get off the line. So there still is some technique to it.
That's interesting you put your hazards on to show appreciation to another racer, I've never heard of that before. Normally I'll just hit the smiley face chat bind.

Do we? I wave. I only flash my indicators when driving trucks and stuff...

In america its more of the wave or the head nod occasionaly the light flash, never hazzards, but moslty the single finger salute :-p
What we need, is the raising of the hand like in gpl :D could mean thanks, could mean $%#@ @$$@!!!!!!!

Well, thing is, and i hate to get off topic but... it costs you the exact same to buy S2 and then addon S3 as it does to just buy S3, S2 is still by far, in my mind, the most realistic game i've ever experianced, its so in depth and it only gets better, seems silly to starve yourself of this kickarseness for another year or two :P

I'm inclined to agree with both points, too. And yes, I use to use hazards to thank people for letting me in/out of a situation. Often-times, groups of 'boy racers' in the UK have hazard-codes, to signal certain things. Not just a hazard light anymore! It's a Public Message System!
*Cough*.
False starts, awsome idea.

I see, it's enough of a destraction for me usually hitting the smiley face bind so flashing the lights or hazards it a bit overkill :)

I totally agree with the first point made in the original post. I don't like having my hand held during the race starts. I'd rather have it as realistic as possible. If someone jumps the start they should be black flagged and receive a stop-and-go penalty.
The hazards thing would be best fixed by allowing multiple buttons and/or keys to be used for each action in the game. For instance, I would like to bind both my DFP shifter and the "paddles" to shift up and down. That way I could use the shifter for road cars and the paddles for race cars. If the game would allow multiple keys and buttons to be assigned to the same function this would solve my shifter problem as well as the hazard problem that the OP mentioned.

On the other hand, look at how many people ignore text messages or turn off the message sounds. It's likely that the person you're giving the smiley won't even see it. If you hit your hazards, you can guarantee they'll see it and know it's you since you're right in front of them.
Personally, I don't do anything. Of course, I'm usually getting passed, not doing the passing. :)

Thanks bobvanvliet for the idea of profiler. With a little battle with logitech profiler (it wasn't working for some time ;) ) I end up with some new assigned buttons on my wheel. Very cool stuff! :) Thanks a lot. Now I can, for example, change my pit instructions on the wheel. Quite comfy ;) Cue-Ball I think you can easily do the same with your shifter-thing.

I could assign those functions to buttons on the DFP, but I'm hoping to eventually have controls that are more car-like. Most cars don't have the headlights, windshield wipers, etc on the steering wheel. :) Besides, without anything labeled and most of the buttons looking very similar, I always end up turning on the hazards when I mean to hit the horn or vice versa. ;)

Not those of us that have ever read the highway code.
Its illegal to activate your hazards while moving, for the obvious reason that someone on one side of you will think you are indicating in that direction, and could easily pull out of a side road in front of you.

I like this idea, it's great!! :) And of course it should be possible to turn this feature on or of. But especially for leagues where everyone drives responsible it would be a great improvement.

Yeah, I've never done that, and don't actually think I've seen anyone do it, in fact.
Truckers (and some other motorists) seem to like quickly flicking the indicators on on one side and then other as a way of saying thankyou, usually just as they're being let into another lane on the motorway.

Yeah, whatever, a little bit different "road culture" I think ;). I've already recognised that the hazard thing is good when you're driving a slow car and it is time to say thanks to somebody. When driving gtr, by the time I turn on the hazards, I could crash something etc. ;)
Can somebody tell me how does the start on GPL look like? And what's GPL btw? :D Grand Prix somethin'? ;)
I like the idea of stop-and go penalty when doing falsestart. Or drive-threw the pit lane for example.
EDIT:
Ah and I forgot. Somebody said something about rolling starts. It's a brilliant idea too. Some of us on our polish lfs forum, took part in some endurance races, for example 20-30 laps we int. with gtr's. And we have had a rolling start already. There was a peace-car, xfr afair, hazards on :D doing first lap about 100kmh/60mph, about 15 gtr's behind warming up... That was really cool. I know, cause I was a peace-car ;). Then on the last straight line I ran into the pits and they begun the race. You should try something something like this. That's reallistic/funny/cool/something new :).

In GPL theres automatic brake being applied so you dont accidentaly move when start is on up/downhill. And some seconds before the actual start you can freely move and brake would dissengage automatically as you do so. You'll get a black flag and you'd have to pit if you moved earlier than the start flag drop and the length of the stop and go penatly is appropriate to how early you started.
Do we want also to have to hold the brake on Blackwood starting grid so it would be totally realistic?
GPL is Grand Prix Legends by Papyrus of course. ;)

I would really like to see this in full s2 release! IMO the more realistic, the better!

just let the car have handbrakes on when sitting on the grid.
Car won't move until you engage a gear (it works that way in F1C AFAIR)

Even the home made- RBNET has a penalty for false starting. It gives you a 15 second penalty I think, or maybe 20.. of course that is rally racing.. but still- if LFS is all about "reality" I cannot see why a false start was not implemented from the start..
Actually LFS S2 is exactly like GT4 in that regard. We need false starts for sure!
