View Full Version : What kind of racing would you like to see added to LFS?

This is just a "dare to dream" exercise. I know the devs already have their hands full working with what we've got. But, I thought it would be fun to think about what we might like to see in the future.
Here are a few things I'd like to see...
http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/september04/corr/images/schmitt_tn.jpg
off-road stadium racing. This would be similar to the rally racing that's in the game, but with some big jumps added in for flavor. Big V8 trucks with huge suspension travel and 33" tires required. :)
http://www.motorsportunderground.com/Jpage/Webpp/pages/Wheelies/Nova%20wheelie.jpg
Proper drag racing. This means at least one V8 car, good size slicks, and a working christmas tree and staging lights on a full 1/4 mile track. I want to see a time slip (with 60' times, trap speeds, etc) so I can rub it in my friend's face.
http://home.pon.net/hunnicutt/images/70TA_race.jpg
1960's Trans-Am type racing. Basically, old American musclecars slugging it out on the track. If there's ONE kind of racing I'd like to see in LFS, this is it. Add in a few decent car models and most people probably wouldn't look twice at GT Legends.
What would you guys like to see?

Go-Kart/Karting races would be fun.
Offcourse we have the MRT and it feels a lot like driving a Go-Kart.
But driving a Go-Kart, going max 120KM/H on a small circuit and even a Trackeditor (for the Go-Kart circuits only) would be fun :)
Ah well...dreaming...

karting for sure, proper 100cc ones!
they would be very hard to simulate i think, with the chassis flex providing a huge part of the grip and altering the handling characteristics.
rental karts however would be easier, solid chassis and a small amount of castor, similar to a UF
something like a JICA (in attachment), maybe a Formula A and ICA hurrah for ICA! would be great
and a whilton mill track

Race against the UF1, F08 more like. Everyone knows that the white van is the fastest thing on the road. You can be on the motorway at any speed in the UK and one of these will still be on your bumper flashing you to get out the way :)

Although it may seem like a bit of a silly, power crazed idea, I would love to see some Monster Trucks simulated. I personally love the rather over-the-top-ness of them, and if nothing else, it would be a great way to test and expand on the extreme end of the game engine's physics.
I'm very much looking forward to the rally expansion, and also like the idea of the off-road trucks in an earlier post.
Hmm.. I see a theme emerging!
I guess I'm looking for a bit of variety - I remember back when the very first demo came out, that one of the mission statements included comments about plans to include all different types of vehicles.. buggies, karts, 6 wheelers etc (unless my memory is lying to me heh). So far though, there hasn't really been much of that at all, and fair play for catering to the proportional target audience and all, but I would love to see something rather more experimental than what we have so far.

soapbox derby? i used to do a fair amount of racing with gravity before i could afford to pay for fuel!
big hill + box + wheels + string steering = silly, silly speeds and a very high chance of injury :)
seriously tho'
Hillclimbs + sprints are a VERY underrated part of motorsport and are very worthy of inclusion into LFS
a section of open road would be nice too, just plain ordinary country road for rally and sprint purposes (nice to just cruise aswell)

I agree. I think that my favorite racing game ever was Need for Speed SE (long, long ago). While it wasn't realistic, it had mostly winding country roads and freeway tracks, rather than the usual "race tracks" that most sims use these days. Racing along a mountain road with traffic moving in both directions is great fun. Unfortunately, I don't think LFS could match this experience since there is no support for this type of traffic model as far as I know.

Again make that LMP and LMGTP. Simple reason:
LMP1 == big roadster proto
LMP2 == small roadster proto
LMGTP == big coupe proto
Of course "big" and "small" refer more to the weight than anything else for those things, but still, the LMP1 and LMGTP are things that can compete together whereas LMP2 is really more in another class.

This is the 'Type of racing you'd like to see added' thread, not the improvement suggestions.
And you can already over-rev your engine and damage it but it isnt easy because all cars have rev-limiters. Tho you can try shifting from 5th to 1st to over rev the engine and notice the damage.

oops...you are right...this isnt the improvement thread. I will have to try what you said...I was thinking in terms of GPL as far as the damage is concerned...then again those were based on much older cars which most likely were able to be blown much easier than modern day engines.

Yes, it is KPH, but...
"when performing a full stop from 200 km/h, a standard-production BMW takes 4.1 seconds and covers 118 metres before coming to a standstill"
The road car does it in 4.1.
"Fifty-five metres is the braking distance a Formula 1 car travels when performing a full stop from a speed of 200 km/h. The process takes 1.9 seconds and creates deceleration forces of up to 5 G"

Group B-type rally cars--especially the ones made just as the class got banned

Old-style formula racers--bullet body, skinny tires, no downforce

I'd give pretty much anything to have a prototype sportscar in LFS, preferably an LMP1 in both GTP and spyder form.
Considering how effortless it is to setup a multiclass race it's a shame we can't currently recreate the full atmosphere of a real sportscar event. The FO8 is nearly as powerful but not designed to take the knocks and scrapes that the protos do when lapping traffic.

American LeMans (ALMS) style cars, especially the Audi R8! And the cars from GTR (ain't I cheeky :p) LFS will show conclusively how it's done!! But yeah, high-powered endurance cars, especially the single-seaters power houses!

Also implement the damage modelling as per the 'r8_crash' image.

alot have been out thinking Supertrucks- and it is my favorite idea www.truckracing.de www.forlmulatruck.com www.buggyra.com !!!!!!!
then ofcourse the Solid axle, leaf spring crazy ness, like mad max's falcon, or The Trans-am racers of the 69-73 era wowza.
three wheelers! that is fun, like the Morgans of the 30's or a JZR/BRA/Triking type, of course sidecars would be rad, especially if you have ragdoll physics and can get them launched from the bike- heh heh

:really: Why exactly isnt it suitable?
Because someone died? - Well, it doesnt show his body, so i see no problem with it.. Its just a wrecked car as far as im concerned..

I would mind seeing the Radical SR8, V8 saloon cars, formula fords. I also wouldnt mind seeing some hill climb tracks, some more street circuits and more GP style tracks (think of tracks over 3.5km but under 8km).

Falling asleep... spent 20 minutes watching drifters take on hillclimbing, rather bizare really, a semi-serious program, about drifting, not really alot to setting a car to drift, no suprise which car won.

hmm hillclimb would be cool but i cant imagine online with 20 people all racing on the same piece of gravel...maybe if the opponents cars were ghosted this could work kinda like a time trial hillclimb.....
would be fun though

Sorry floug (or anyone else) if I offended you, I didn't realise the context in which the photo was taken. If I had known, I certainly wouldn't have posted it. I just did a google search looking for images of the r8.
Anyway, I have removed the offending image.

Banger racing is a great idea, grip racing with all the strict rules is fun and all that but sometimes its fun trying to pass your oponent by grinding them up against the wall or fishtailing them.
The very sad thing about lfs is LAG, lag causes cars to fly thousands of feet into the air just because of a slight touch of another car, maybe LFS can work a little bit on the crash behaviours so it won't do that.
Togues would be GREAT for lfs, all the cars including the forumula cars would be great for hill climbing, the whole elevation change thing is an awesome idea, LFS did really well when they made the bridge in SO and also some of those bumps in FE rally, but I was thinking like a hill climb with a lot of sharp corners. It would be challenging and add a lot more fun to LFS!

I like a destruction derbi like game in the carpark, and you can play it with any car of the game. The cars must have all damages the game has, with a "overall damage bar", with this bar full at 100% the player is out.
Another option if the Damage Bar can not be possible, is to make a rule that if a car cant reach -per example- 20Km during last 10 segs, its out. It could be fantastic to make team wars, leagues and destruction races in general.
Good luck for all, GlassONionZ

Point to point hill climb events would be great too.

my whishes:
- mountain road circuits ("initial-d" style) like japanese and spanish tracks of colin mc rae series with some broken tarmac (like RL mountain roads)
- free run: a configuration for all tracks to remove all barries -> that is: standard, reverse, free run.
- bikes (that's a dream for now ok...) let's remember that "4 wheels r 2 much" mod, showed us LFS is quite ready for bikes
- a BMW Z4 like car but AWD in the range of fxo/rb4 or lx6 (this would increase lx6 servers :) by introducing a "noob" car in the same range)
:)

A proper short oval track would keep speeds down, reducing the effects of lag on collisions. Proper barriers, rather than the autox billboards, would probably not cause the insane launches you see on the car park.

It's not so much a request for a new car, but a track: A track with more elevation changes so that you'd have to lift off the throttle not to go airborn too much. Imagine a track placed at a mountain, with first half of the race going mainly uphill but with some brief downhill stints, some really tight corners mixed with slightly wider, banked curves. And once you're through the first half, let the downhill begin!!! massive slopes with sharp bends, varied banking and radius.. it would be intense. I can see the need for driving strategically, keeping tires in check because of haaard downhill braking that pushes the car :) It would also show a bigger difference in weight of the cars. more powerful but heavy cars will do the climb a bit better, and have higher speed in the downhill, but will have to brake a lot earlier because of their weight.. Gah I want it.

Hi,
this is what I want do see in the LFS-future:
Motocross
MotoGP like
Sandbuggies or something like that
dirtbikes
old stockcars (destruction derby like)
lamborgini-ferrari like cars
musclecars
truckracing
....
maybe something like this (http://www.sportcycle.co.uk/)

Motocross

I can't see bikes being simulated, engines yes but not the handling dynamics, I don't think they'd be worth the bother, most people do not have the right controlers, and TBH if it's going to be a sim it would require a full bike sized thing like you see in arcades. A car is easy to get the right input with as a cockpit stays fixed and a wheel can be fixed to an ordinary desk.

I have the Thrustmaster Freestyle bike handlebars, but they have a big center deadzone and shared axis on the throttle/brake, so that's not of much use for simulations. It's a blast using it in Star Wars Episode 1 Pod racer though!!! And in Midnight Club II, with the bikes (Most fun arcade action I've had on 2 wheels since.. well forever)
