View Full Version : Head-to-Head: Winter Series '09 - Event 1

Ok here it is, sign-ups are opening and I will send a PM to all on the list. It's a rat race to get in, and only the top 24 will be allowed at the event. However where as this is the first event may allow 30 people to join instead of 24. This is only speculative and will be decided on event day.

You must arrive to the server BY 19:00utc. There is no room for being late.
The event will not immediately start at 19:00utc, instead there will be a period where reserves are brought in to fill the empty spots.
All reserves are to meet up in the LFS Meeting Room. (Multiplayer -> Display Hosts -> Meeting Room)
As people are needed, the SRS Admin will call up the reserves until the server is filled.
If a reserve driver is not in the meeting room at the time, the next on the list will be called.
*There will be no waiting around for people to join the server or meeting room*

Thanks, and sorry for putting them on the reserve but I felt that the people who followed directions needed to get the ever slight priority. But I think in the end I will be doing 30 players with 14 going away empty handed, however they will have received points for showing to the event on time, which will help them in the sign-ups for the rest of the series.

Thats a clever idea :thumb:
Can you drop my name to the reserve list? I'm not 100% sure I can make it, I haven't got much time to practice and I'm afraid to say the iTCC takes priority for me next weekend :/

For the first event only we will probably do 30 drivers due to the amount that signed up and to give more people the chance to get a few championship points that will help them in the sign-up lists for the rest of the events.

It's too late to do that Chris, I will move you to the bottom of the reserves, which you will be lucky to get in. I can't let people sign in and out of the events, look at the popularity. You are now moved to the bottom of the reserve list, but you are signed back in. Make sure you follow the procedures for the reserves when it comes event day.

Summer Series will probably be run a bit differently since the popularity is finally risen to the point where we can have two divisions. This is not a guaranteed fact yet, but it is quite possible there will be divisions next time to keep popularity the same. We would have done divisions this time, but we really didn't expect the amount of participation.

Hmm a little mixed for me, had an ok first race against zeug and obviously moved to round 2 as zeug was filing his nails instead of driving. Round 2 was bitter/sweet after the first race i thought id have no chance in the second, we were side by side nearly all the way to the chicane and i decided i wasn't letting off (who had the biggest balls really) and dave let off a little too much so i won. Glad i won, not happy about how it was decided really. Then had Rudy in the semi's which was pretty much a disaster both races, pushing too hard and a few lag moments and i was out. Well organised and looking forward to the next ones. :thumb:

We are very sorry to those that didn't have a chance to qualify, it seems there's something wrong when people keeps timing out and such.

I failed as much as the insim did :tilt:
Didn't realise I was actually in until 1858 GMT, so didnt really have much practice :D
Managed to shave over 1 second off my PB in Warmup (1 :P)
Then Quali came, failed, so we had Warmup again :tilt:
I was in quali 2, lap was going well until the chicane where I binned it :(
Managed to sneak in another lap, nearly span and so was out. but WTF Stefan where did you come from?! 3rd in quali 2 :)
Went to have tea, then came back to some amazing racing :)
Good job all, see you next week where I'll fail even worse. Maybe I'll use the NDR SC skin so you all can't overtake me :D

I had a great time tonight. I had Michael in first round, passed him in the S1 corner. Race 2 I had Messy, enjoyed that, was pretty close racing..into the semi's i go.
Met Nolan then, had a very scrappy 1st race, and we got tangled up in s/f straight, with me spinning out of control across the finsh line. 2nd race was a bit neater, you seemed to pull away after T1, but i got the slipstream and made a last ditch effort to try and get you on the inside, but it didn't work out.
Anyway, was chuffed to get to Semi's, and congratz to Nolan.
Bring on the RAC :))

How do you say it? SHADAP!!! Btw, you must really suck since I actually beat you in the first race even while filing my nails. :D
I got further than I expected since I survived the quali. Even made a new pb in each of the two warmups but knew that I had no chance against 90% of other drivers who made it into Round 1.

Well...I was having a look at how dave drove through the middle part, and realised that i was driving 2 gears to high (got his setup, thanks again)
But i lost it in my first qual lap, and crahsed into the wall.
Luckily i could get out of the pits whitl like 1 second open pits time remaining again, and could pull off a rather good lap - i think i MAY can go into the 6es, if i really get a good lap - But then i had to race vs rudy, the best racer in lfs i think, and messed up the first corner.
Hope my finish was stylish, though.

TEST EVENT [Successful] - was it really?
Would you like me to change the title to [Unsuccessful]? :really:
The test event tested everything that we could possibly test with that number of people, and since this is the last time an event will have 30 players in it that shouldn't happen again. Apologies for the system giving you a disadvantage - in future, even if you're not told to join, press shift+j to just double check. We think that you were supposed to be an one of the sessions, but the system didn't tell you. Maybe you can shed a little light on your experience so we can fix it?

I did that too, just to check, but actually its illegal
Q.2.1) Each participant has 5 minutes to finish their session, which consists of the following; (P1 Penalty for joining during wrong session).
I think that the boldened bit needs to be taken out.

When I saw that there were too few in Q1, I already suspected there was something wrong... But pitlane was already closed, so nothing I could do about it... Still, I figured I'd be in Q2, double-checked when I still wasn't called as Mp3 suggested and got a penalty for that...
Bummer, I could have easily made a time below 1:07 (best time of Q2) and gotten into the event...

Yea this is what I explained to Taylor and what not. It could also have been timing out at the wrong times makes the system not include someone, may need to test that more thoroughly although, I hope there are no issues there cause that would be insane, and its probably dumb luck of when the timeout occurs. Either way, yes that rule needs to be changed, since that was before things were neatly done.

RULE CHANGE:
Q.2.1) Each participant has 5 minutes to finish their session, which consists of the following; (P1 Penalty for joining during wrong session).
Q.2.1) Each participant has 5 minutes to finish their session, which consists of the following; (Press Shift-J to see if you are in the session, system will spectate you if you're not.)
Reason: This rule is changed because the system will not allow participants to join if they are not in the system. Since there has been some confusion in the past, I would rather people be urged to attempt getting into each session, than to not qualify at all.
PROCEDURE CHANGE:
Q.2) Two qualification sessions with half the grid. Slower racers in the first session, faster racers in the second.
Q.2) Two qualification sessions separating the grid. Faster racers in the first session, slower racers in the second.
Reason: The procedure was coded this way in the automated system because in the earlier days we accepted the late joiners and they would qualify in session two with the other racers that didn't make it into the first session. I want to point out there is no specific on this split, because it could be half, it could be a set limit of 10 in the faster session, but whichever it is the faster session will always have the same or LESS racers than the slower session to give them a small advantage for getting a good time in warmup.

Sorry bout missing the event - my wireless power plug was mysteriously unplugged but at 4:30am in the morning I didn't think to check that and when I couldn't connect to the internet I just went back to bed. :(

Would you like me to change the title to [Unsuccessful]? :really:
Erm, nah. I only asked that as i thought there could be some undiscovered problems with the Insim thingy, that's all...
... Maybe you can shed a little light on your experience so we can fix it?
Sure. During the first warm-up i kept loosing connection (i don't know why that was, it was fine all day up until we was all out on track with the insim thing running), perhaps that was an issue somehow, like BlackBird said... but there were others who got [unfairly] eliminated too, so did they time-out also?
I think there was a problem of some kind with the system after the first warm-up was completed (players not getting spectated or something?). Something went wrong with it, as you know, because the warm-up was then restarted.
At this point my connection seemed stable & i could finally set a time without disconnecting. Goody! I looked for my name for Quali 1, as told to do so, but it didn't appear... Goody i think again, i must be fast enough for Quali 2... ready to go out on track, waited for my name to be displayed. It never was. The end.

I don't know if you just chose the "wrong" words but your name isn't displayed for quali. It just asks/tells you to join. Maybe you just missed that?

Hmm... Well i'm not sure, it was my first H2H and i wasn't overly sure what to expect
But i would've seen it if i was looking for it, wouldn't i? Either way, i wasn't asked/told to join...

I'd say so, yes.
It tells you in blue letters (I think) to join right at the start of the quali session.

So the moral of story is: don't do what you're told and rules are made to be broken :D

That's what I was hoping to hear and is exactly why that rule was changed. Everybody take Tommy's example (this is the last time I'll ever say that)!

I think the one thing to remember is that rules are there to stop people cheating or gaining an unfair advantage, not to penalise you for things that are not your fault or where you're just trying to get on with racing. If there's a rule that you think is wrong then point it out to the admins, they want as much as you do for the racing to be done on the track and not with (potentially unfair) penalties post-race.

Hi guys, the results are already up on our website (http://simracers.50webs.net/h2h/) (check the Events Calendar on the right).
The standings will be up soon as we have to sort some penalties yet.
I'd just like to point out that I am not from the UK. I'm Irish, so it should say (IRL) , rather than (UK)
Thanks.

hihi :) Just use your head guys. Breake a rule (which is no longer a rule) and drive race, or follow a stupid (If I can say that?) rule and dont drive the race. Choose the first one ;)

Yeah, it's all our fault for actually caring about the regulations the organizers established... Thank you, shining star that brings us to enlightenment...

I would like to point out a few things here. So please be patient with this post as it may be quite long, however it will explain a few things that happened. Where as it was the first event, and the rule conflicted with what I have seen most people try to do, then I have started making some adjustments to the system and rules to resolve this issue in the future. I am sorry for those who are affecty, but we gave you points for your time, and you recieved more points than any knocked out in qualifying, which is the best we can give you.

During the first warm-up i kept loosing connection (i don't know why that was, it was fine all day up until we was all out on track with the insim thing running), perhaps that was an issue somehow, like BlackBird said... but there were others who got [unfairly] eliminated too, so did they time-out also?

Goody i think again, i must be fast enough for Quali 2... ready to go out on track, waited for my name to be displayed. It never was. The end.
The first warmup session was restarted not because the system didn't work correctly, because it was running 100% what I made it do. However, in qualifying session #1 the system closed pitlanes afer 10 seconds. Which, is my fault, my mistake and I had left it in from doing some important tests earlier that morning. I had a late night trying to make the system allow the 3 minute emergency pit and retry time. As admins we figured there needed to be a way for people to redo things if something happened. That was the only reason we restarted warmup.
As for the disconnect/reconnecting issue, it "shouldn't" be a problem, but maybe it was. We have tested that pretty thouroughly with Taha constantly disconnecting and reconnecting but maybe you just did it at a very specific point. I however simply said that *might* be the issue. I think however the problem, with Taylor not getting a qualifying time, and the others were all simular. I thing its possible they either A) missed the text that calls them, and B) Followed my stupid rule and did not try to join each session. The combination of those two things leads us to this issue.
I will state that the system calling your name is, relatively easy to miss. To be honest, it tells you that the session has began, which session it was, says, "Join the session within 30 seconds." and possibly a couple other things all at once. I can see people having issues catching their name as it flys up. I don't like the everyone hit Shift-J approach, but it works and you'll find your session. Maybe mid-season I will add a better "calling" behaviour to the system so this won't be an issue. But for now everyone should just hit Shift-J and attempt to join each session..
This is a very true statement, in the few series we have run we have always remained flexible with our rules when we see that they are unfair to the participants that are not trying to gain advantages or really doing things to break what we think of as key rules in Head-to-Head. The rule that was changed after Event 1, was originally made because we were just starting to make the system and the rules were made before hand. Since I was able to make the system spectate those that don't belong in a session, the rule is quite pointless. There are other examples, after Event 2 of the Summer Series a penalty was changed due to the amount of people who rolled or got stuck in the MRT, not completing their hotlap, or not reaching split one after their hotlap.

I do not agree that is called using your head. This statement is totally wrong, and I as an admin will take full responsibility for the actions of those who did not push Shift-J in fear of losing points for joining the wrong session. I gave them the points as if they passed qualifying but unfortately I can't do more. The ruling has now changed as we know so they will be happy to know how it should be done. I don't think any rule is ever stupid, its just that particular one was made for a reason that no longer exists. I give these guys more credit than a lot of others that made it deeper into the event; They read, and followed rules! Whether the rule caused them to miss out on the event or not, is my fault as an Admin, not their fault as a participant.
I dunno you seemed a little defensive... Almost like you were blaming them of accusing you of something...
He did seem defensive, but it wasn't defensive to the admins of Head-to-Head. He was just jumping on Tomhah's comment above about breaking the rule, and basically taking it as being blamed for following the rules getting him eliminated. As I said above, the entire incident is blamed to the admins and not the participants that followed the old ruling. I can assure you I am extremely sorry this was the case, I have seen the system work as is for four events in the Summer Series, for four test events prior to the Winter Series and I felt it was fine, however people that read and followed the rules as they were suppose to fell at the disadvantage and we hope that the points they were awarded give them something and they return to finish the series.
I told you it would be a long one, but I wanted to cover up all bases about what happened.

Yea I will post them sometime, probably after event 2 I will sit and rename the replays for both events, I was lazy and didn't do this right after the event, and during the week I have been working on the Automated System to make the admin job a bit easier to get the results up quicker.
