View Full Version : how do i find people to race with

hi there,

i hear that public servers are not very clean. although it seems its as clean as i am, i feel like sometimes blue flags are ignored or people pull onto the track or dont give position to a car that is making a good move, and i feel like race after race is becoming dull-ish. need a little bit more competition or pressure to make the race exciting, or people to laugh with cos i finished last :schwitz:

so i see some guys who are part of a racing club or something, is there any UK racing clubs that are quite active, as i got lots of time to play LFS and wanna chat with guys about the game and learn to race really well and also so i can have a cool skin like thats the same as my team mates:thumb:

Leagues sound like a lot of fun, i think by just joining random servers i am missing out on a whole other side of LFS, how can i find a really active uk racing team??

there are lots of servers... use mates@track or something else once you find some people you like to race. Stick to servers with good reputations but dont be afraid to try out others. :p.

one side of me wants to try and help more and the other side wants to flame you.:schwitz:

Clean Racers Club is the one. There's lots of events being run all the time. Go and register and apply to be an applicant. Spend a bit of time on the CRC servers (always at the bottom of the list), race some full members and if you are clean, they'll vote you in.

This way the club is a selet few of good clean drivers. I rarely play on public servers now.

yea people would like you to think that all public servers are a madhouse, but this is just not true! there are a couple of servers to stay away from , but most of them you will find good, clean racing without having to deal with the b.s. that goes along with being involved in certain "clubs"!!!

League racing is great, but there are still accidents and some over zealous drivers there too. You cannot get away from all of it. So in that way, it very much mimics real life :D But, leagues are not good for a quickie pick-up race. Leagues are more about heavy practice for a very competitive race once every two weeks.

Watch for names of drivers that you do have good races with. Put them on your buddy list in LFS World. Use the Live Alert feature to see when and were they are online. Join them on those servers and chances are, you will have a much better experience.

i didnt mean it as a bad thing i just thought i was missing out on a better part of LFS, im not very confident in the car yet i still cant get lap times anywhere near the good people.

im loving the racing that goes on already but most public servers ive been racing on have people who hot lap so you get blue flagged people sitting on your rear end for ages putting you off even if youre in third and they pitted 20 times that race, they got a fresh car out of the pits but your worn out banger is still on lead lap trying to make your way round.

maybe im just on a difficult server and im not good enough but having so many fresh cars pouring out of the pits into your race can be a bit, unsettling or maybe thats just me again.

in leagues do they have limits on how much you can pit in a race? do people pit as often? or are they pretty much the same as the public servers with loads of restarts? :scratchch

All the leagues I know of don't have rules on the amount of times you pit as such, but "Insta-pitting (shift-s) is forbidden."

Also, most only have one start. Mess that up, or wreck it, and that's it race over. Needless to say most (I said most) people are more cautious on the first lap until it's settled down a bit. In a long race it's not so important if you lose a place at the start (depending on who it is ;)).

yeah i totally understand that internet games are like that ive played other various games online so i know what happens on servers like that, i been teamkilled on counterstrike many times on public servers :thumb: its a more relaxed atmosphere in those servers i guess but its nice to hook up for a proper meet with some friends and race like a sim like a clan match is a whole other side to that game.

maybe i will try and start a newbie race team :D i just made my first skin i think maybe i could spend some time doing some stuff for that, and just hire newbies like me to race properly though and try and learn quick.

who knows i only got this game a coupla weeks ago i still got loads to learn but i got the time will wait and see. :schwitz:

ive changed my mind, im not even going to bother spending much time other than just driving and doing my own thing, this game isnt worth it. im not even going to bother coming back here unless im going to the skinning forum.

well, today i have decided that i am DEFINATELY (bold and italic) not going to buy a steering wheel for my PC, i am going to cut my losses at paying for LFS. it seems i purchased it when it is past its prime as the feedback i get from replies and reading this forum hint that the best has passed. maybe this game is not the gem i thought it was.

i advise anyone who is about to get this game, dont.

No really I can understand how he thinks LFS is past its prime :Looking_a PC years are much faster than human years so 4 years in development in PC years is probably equivelent to 30 - 40 years of human development :D so LFS is over 30 years old in PC terms, a little over the hill don't you think?

No no really, each to his own, LFS isn't for everyone :shy: but it is for me :smileypuland I know I'll still be here in 1 years time and 2 years and... well you get it :p

Edit: This is not a harsh post, and I am not trying to put you down at all. All I would like to know is where you're aggreivences (spelling?!) have come from. I'm quite happy to respect your decision if you would at least tell us what it is based on. /edit

I don't know why did you buy the licence?
In what way does this forum stop you from taking the sim seriously? We discuss lots of interest things, we help each other, and occasionally we have a laugh at other peoples expense. It's called conversation, and it'll happen in real life and on the internet.

Which bit of LFS is a 5 min blast of fun. I've been playing for nearly 3 years and I still haven't got a damn WR yet, so I haven't even got close to finishing the game? In 5 minutes you'd be lucky to do 2 laps. Hardly a fair test if you ask me.

In what way does the community not extend the game? I can't think of many other games, let along racing sims, that have members that will go out of their way to help people improve or give advice.

Am I correct in thinking that you went online, and got shouted at for causing/nearly causing an accident? I'm basing this on the F1 - F8 keys thread when you said you'd put a couple of extra messages in your binds?

I also notice you din't reply to my PM I sent you last night, in an attempt to very politely find out what had bothered you, without any preconcieved notions of what caused it. But if you won't reply in a thought out manner, or at all, then no one can gelp you...

If you say so....... all these people that posted to your thread pretty much told you if you got online they'd help if they could. But you know better from the 5 whole minutes you spent on it I guess.
If you don't like LFS, then move on.
The Community doesn't extend the game, it's part of it.
it's as much a part of the game as the physics are.
I don't know if you can understand that, so I'd probably just waste bandwidth trying to explain it.
If you're expecting instant WRs within minutes of getting a license,
well guess again. LFS takes a long tome to get down.

Maybe you could give LFS a second chance? Don't care about the thisnameistaken's and th84's thread hijacking, they are just waiting to be pwnd! once again :) It's like in the wild west when the two slowest gun men draw guns against each other and the better dies, and well, uhh...it's about being the slowest, well, hmm...this is not going well... :D

i dont want WR, i just want something else other than just load up the game, do like 5x 5 lap races then just leave. i sure as dont want to be part of this forum because i tried and you just get knocked down. you try to talk in a server but just ignored or people are sarcastic or just say "noob!". you come to find people or clubs to race with, you might get flamed (or helped) depending on the mood the person is in. *see 2nd post in this thread

yeah so what if im new. so what if i tried to make something else of this game than just doing the same 5 lap races over and over. i guess i was stupid to think this online racing simulator had something else to offer than the same old first person shooter 5 minute blast online. single player games will rule forever until forums like these are gone or treated differently by the player base.

who cares if i wanted to do some serious racing where flags are obeyed and people actually TALK on the server or have some fun. im stupid for thinking this game was anything other than great physics.

Gentlefoot
16th February 2006, 12:34
I think that's why many of us suggested joining a club like CRC or a league.

I have to say I haven't found people to be rude or sarcastic to me. I do get wound up, as you do, by restarts but this doesn't happen in Cup/League events.

Also, you may be ignored on servers if everyone has got the hands full - i.e. in the middle of a race. I never chat during racing - I always wait until the race is over to ask for sets etc. Most people are very accomadating. Also, remember, people might have nipped off to the loo or be rolling a smoke so don't see you messages.

So, what is it you actually want? Longer races where drivers obey flags, pass cleanly and are polite and have a laugh? That's exactly the experience I get when I race in CRC events. Its true, we have many members which are not active, but I don't mind that at all. I get to see the same racers all the time and I've got to know them and trust them not to punt me off. Ofcourse accidents do happen and every driver MUST accept this or they will not enjoy the game. And ofcourse some drivers are more aggressive than others, which reflects the real world perfectly.

I hope you read this post and see that I have taken time to compose it and have tried to help (as did everyone else as far as I can tell).

The guy almost sorta has a slight point.

There can be a very clandestine feel, not only in the forum, but also in the game on servers, most people have there own "click" and are pretty abrasive to "noobs", heck they can be abrasive to people who have been doing it for a long time..

Richy, give it time, drive the same decent servers over and over again, people will become familiar with you, and you with them.

I dont know how fast you are, but there is a very friendly league for UK based drivers every other Monday for the ESL, maybe thats a way to "get your foot in the door".

I do understand where you are coming from, just don't be so flippant with it, and give it a chance.

Meh...me I would probably have typed "click the multiplayer button and take it from there...."

Be thankful that you got some polite friendly replies, remember every new guy starts with a credibility rating of zero, and you do have to make some effort not to be ignored....
I reckon I'm well into minus figures by now.

If you can't handle sarcastic asshats then I'd suggest you un-install the internet.

Okay, may I just break down what you said into bite size chunks and comment.

1. No one forces you to do 5 lap races. There are servers which do longer racing, and there are league racing servers again with longer more tactical racing. But it's nice to just have a quick race after a day in the office to chill out without worrying about pitstop strategies.

2. I always say "Hi" to people who join a server (unless I'm busy not crashing), and most people I see online do the same. Some people do it fanatically!

3. Sarcasm is a fact of life. You'll get in it Counterstrike, LFS, or in the local supermarket with your friends. Learn to cope with it or ignore it.

4. People only say noob for a reason. If you crash lots, or cause crashes, or do something silly then there is a chance you'll be unfairly called a noob. If you race (or drift) like the others in the server then they won't know your a newbie unles you give them evidence.

5. This forum gets a little heated at times. But it's rare that full blown arguments kick off, and generally there is little damage done. You can shout at scream at one persons arguments in one thread, and be best buddies in another. Most forums are just slanging matches. This one isn't (mostly).

6. I applaud you for trying to do things differently - say longer races. But unfortunately majority rules. As much as I love a good long thrilling race against people of similar speed to me, I know that the opportunities to do this are rare, and the preparations required are too much to do that regularly.

7. The second post in this thread seemed fine to me. He did help, and didn't flame. But to answer your question, there are UK clubs yes. CRC is a club where you prove you're okay a driving and can then join passworded CRC servers with other likeminded people. As for teams, there are also plenty. You might need to hang around a team for a while - LFS Worlds buddy list is great for doing this. I'd recommend teams like dSRC, vMax (obviously :p), T7R and the like, but there are more friendly teams than I know the names of (so don't kill me if I didn't mention your team).

8. Flag obeyance is a problem. Most people TRY to obey blue flags, but as they haven't done much lapping they aren't sure what a lappee should do. Some people just don't know what a blue flag is. What can you do? Yellow flags are a bit of a problem - the best way is to deal with each one as circumstance sees fit. If you have a 20 second lead, lift off and make sure it's safe. You'll only lose a couple of seconds. If you're trying to catch someone on the last lap, then don't lift if you think you'll be okay. Remember, you cannot hurt yourself in sim racing (yet) so flag rules are a bit odd. If you want to obey them fine, but if someone doesn't that's his/her choice. They might get away with it, they might not.

9. Throwing a wobbly on a public forum is asking for trouble. Humans are like vultures, in so much that if you show a weakness someone is usually along pretty quick to mock it. You're "I don't want to play anymore" posts have just made things appear much worse than they would have been, so in many ways you only have yourself to blame for the attitude you've attracted.

10. Might I suggest that you DON'T leave LFS just yet, but avoid the forum until things die down again. Read the information herein by all means, and get the lay of the land and the people. In LFS itself, say hi to people (but don't expect a reply if people are racing), be nice, and do whatever you can to avoid accidents (I'm not saying you cause them though). If you race someone you like or had a good race with, add them to your LFS Buddy list so you can find them in the future. Keep doing this and you'll find a warmth and friendliness I've not found in any single player game or any other multiplayer game. If you don't want to try again, then I'm sorry but LFS clearly wasn't for you, and the intricacies of the simulation have obviously passed you by.

What games/sims do you play? And what do they offer that LFS can't?

Most public servers/pick-up races out there are 5 laps. I happen to enjoy that as I run in the evenings for a little bit, then go to bed on weekdays. On the weekends, I'd like to see some long races, sure. That's why I joined NAL (the only league catered to North American time zones.) But the 5 lappers are just as fun, especially when you start to meet others and gain friendship/companionship with them. Give it more than a day and you will start seeing the same folks, start racing the same folks, and the friendship expands from there.

i sure as dont want to be part of this forum because i tried and you just get knocked down. you try to talk in a server but just ignored or people are sarcastic or just say "noob!". you come to find people or clubs to race with, you might get flamed (or helped) depending on the mood the person is in. *see 2nd post in this thread
The second post was a fluke there. After that, you have other posts until your next one telling you to stay, telling you we will help you with whatever you need if we can, and answering your original question on clubs, leagues, generally where to get some good racing in. I can tell you, I use to be a part of GURU (www.grownupracing.com (http://www.grownupracing.com)) and they are a great bunch of guys. I am part of CRC (www.cleanracersclub.ort (http://www.cleanracersclub.ort) I think) and they are a great bunch. I race with CoRe members all the time, another great bunch (sorry, can't remember the website guys). I race the NAL league with CoRe members, CRC members, individuals, all great guys. Everyone takes this seriously, especially in clubs/teams/leagues.

yeah so what if im new. so what if i tried to make something else of this game than just doing the same 5 lap races over and over. i guess i was stupid to think this online racing simulator had something else to offer than the same old first person shooter 5 minute blast online. single player games will rule forever until forums like these are gone or treated differently by the player base.
This is definitely a fantastic forum and fantastic community. Single player definitely does NOT rule anymore. I haven't played a single player game since I got online the first time a year ago in LFS. I'm sorry if you had a bad experience being new online here. I don't understand it, but then again, I'm not running on UK time. It may be different, but even though there isn't many over here in the States/Canada online, it is a great subcommunity of the LFS community. There has even been many gatherings for real of racers here. NAL guys got together a few times to go Karting. I know a bunch got together in the UK once or twice as well.

who cares if i wanted to do some serious racing where flags are obeyed and people actually TALK on the server or have some fun. im stupid for thinking this game was anything other than great physics.
Most won't talk while racing, it is hard to drive a wheel and type on a keyboard at the same time, let alone driving with mouse or keyboard and type. After races, there is so much chatter, that it's hard to follow all the conversations going on.

I'm having trouble understanding what trouble you are having with the racing, forum, or community here. It has been nothing but positive 99% of the time that I have seen.

Stick with it, check out some of the team/club/league some have posted here. Jump onto some of the servers that some have suggested here. If you see "NightHawk|CRC" out there give him a shout. I know he will treat you good. After all, I was a "noob" once to and if it wasn't for all those I commented on above, I wouldn't be where I am racing today (which may not say much with my slow racing, LOL :D )

The "game" is still good regardless of what you think of the community.

How about I put another spin on it for you, the "game" will only be as good as you make it, if you are prepared to put the effort in to finding good servers and good people to race against, then you will ultimatly be rewarded, if not then you may has well give up with the MP side of it all together.

Who said you were spoilt?, I can't see that anywhere.

Given up on trying to get WRs. When they're ready they'll come and find me :D

Bear in mind that I'm still getting used to my pedals (ECCI) and at the moment I seem to be about 0.5 off my pb's. But it's getting better each time I drive. So my day of pwnage will come sooner than you think :D:D

When I said I was leaving he said "Oh **** it's 3am!". On that evidence, I don't think we have to worry about richy quitting LFS any time soon ;)
LOL on that. I did that many times when I first found LFS. I still do it now even. I saw Richy at As Nat, but the server was full. I was hoping to get in and run a bit with him.

Richy, you were running that one with the group I know and respect. Hope you had a good time with those guys :thumb: .

yeah that ufr was fun last night, the setup really made a difference, the only time ive driven that thing round SO town rev is on a default setup and you end up wrecking the car just getting out of the pits

but that setup is definately good for racing the uf 1000 round there, so many times i pointed the front of the car at an apex and flinched thinking it was going to hit but just sailed round nicely!! (i love the short nose on that car feels like your feet are the first things that are going to hit the barrier) :thumb:

lovely little car

yes, once again i was pwned!! but in my defense, ive been playing this sim for a year, and those were first laps on that track!! plus i hate those stupid cars!! but making myself look foolish was a small price to pay to visit richy and show him a good time!!(well, try to show him a good time anyway) :) glad to see you had fun richy!!! well do it again real soon :)
