View Full Version : How Did You Manage to Reach the 1:30's mark with FWG on BlackWood GP?

Couldn't even break the 1:40's mark despite following the computer AI paths and no way also a computer AI Pro could reach below that limit.

The AI are not really that advanced. They don't drive world record speeds. Continue practicing and you'll find even the AI Pro are easy to beat.

1:31s are possible without cheating.. but 1:30s aren't (yet anyway). Drafting and pitting can shave a huge amount of time but still you need to be driving at 1:31 pace to get to 1:30s.
1:32s are easy peasy with a good set and continuous practice over a long period of time, while using tools such as AnalyzeForSpeed and WR replays to adjust braking points and lines.

What is drafting? Do you exactly follow the AI paths driven by the computer? I was amazed. Even only demo racers most are already doing well below the 1:40s mark.

What is drafting?

drafting is driving in the slipstream of the car in front of you. It gives you more speed as you pass it on a straight. On long straights bumpdrafting is even more effective. Bumpdrafting is drafting without passing, with the sole intention of going as fast as possible by nudging the car in front of you so that both of you gain more speed. Realistically it requires two (or more?) very skilled drivers to make the most out of it.

Drafting should not involve contact.
Bumpdrafting is not big or clever :( , and personally I dont think it should be encouraged .

In normal racing I agree, the question here is how to get to 1:30s (which is way faster than the current WR for the XFG) and the best way to do this is to have 2 drivers working in tandem, bumpdrafting and using the pits (you get DQ'd for this in a race) on a closed track or at least far away from those battling for positions. Logically that latter point is to the advantage of the bumpdrafters as well because the rest will be driving slower and end up getting on the way.
There's no problem using these extra techniques as long as they're not abused, in my opinion. :schwitz:

hi everyone.
I'm new to the game. Did a few laps and playing with settings a bit i managed to drive the xf gti on the blackwood gt track 1:38:8.
This any good?
p.s. I'm using a keyboard.

For a few quick laps, yeah. You've made a good start, aim to get to 1:33s though, to be competitive on almost all XFG servers. :)

I'll do that. Is it fiction to think i'll get there(1:33) with a keyboard?
Yes, i know... :) But i'll try anyway ! :)

1.31.7X its possible with keyboard without draft or other things than may help you. Its possible bacause ive seen one guy doing it several times in races (not hotlaps) :pillepall:D:D
just crazy lololol
keep playing and you could do 1.33 easy

Are these times possible (sub 1:33) possible without an alien setup? I saw one WR with a crazy setup, some settings maxed out, other settings set to min, and using both road and hybrid tires :pillepall

[Fluid] KingNothing is a fast keyboarder to look for, haven't seen him on demo servers for ages but there's always LFSW :p He can do 31s easy peasy :)

Sure, low 1:32s are possible with a more realistic setup (softer, less extreme damping and ARBs, LSD (60% or more), less camber and road_normals only). You won't get a WR with such a set but at least mid 32s are possible.
There is logic though in using hybrid tyres for short races
1) they heat up faster
2) negates the ridiculously low pressures required to heat up road_normals

Yeah!
Drove another 50 laps or so yesterday. I came to realise how hard the game actually was. It is 60% settings and the other 40% the skill of the driver i guess...I'm new to setting up the car too and don't really know how each setting affects the car, but i'll learn...Did a 1:37:99 yesterday and after that made some additional modifications, but never reached under 1:39 again. Usually i mess it up already in the first slow corner after the finishing straight. First split time around 33s, (32:6s was the best). It's really annoying to mess it up already in the first corner:doh:.
Thanks for letting me know how low it's possible to go:thumb: and for the advise on how to set up the car.

T1 is a bit tricky because if you lock brake you'll miss the apex, and if you go too wide on to the kerb your rear will slide out..
Try brake force 535 or 555 and bias 75%. Approach T1 so that your left tyres will just about go on the kerb and brake with maximum force at 100m or just before it. Keep holding the brakes and quickly shift to 2nd gear. Start turning towards the apex at 25m and release the brake when you hit 90 kph, let the car roll far enough into the apex that when you step on the gas again you don't go wide to the left.
Then simply go over the right kerb of the chicane and use its camber to turn through it! :p

Getting better every day. I'm now down to 1:35.9. I've raced a bit online....
Won a couple times, but didn't stand a chance when better guys were on track. Couldn't match their 33s and 32.8s.
It's a fun game though. This was my first online gaming experience. Quite exciting competing against guys from all over the globe.:D
My eyes ache... It's been a long, long session:D .

Hey janm, how about a replay for us to check out? Maybe someone can give you some tips. Myself, I don't worry about my times vs. everyone elses. I joined the S1 demo in March 05 and drove it until S2 demo was released sometime in April. April through June I drove the GTi religiously every night and for hours and hours on the weekends. I was slowly making my way into the 1:36's, but I had some awesome races with others on the track. I got licensed the week S2 alpha full was released and occationally jump into the demo servers now and then.
Last night I ran around in the demo servers for hours (even recognised I think 5 other licensed drivers) and was popping off high 1:34's throughout the night. After all the laps and all the nights I spent in the demo servers pre S2 Full, I am only consistantly hitting 1:34's now.
Just my thoughts about times. I don't worry about them. I gained most of my positions in the T1 wreck last night. LOL, once you get use to T1 wrecks in the FZR, driving the GTi through the massive wreck on the demo is like driving in slow motion. I felt like I was just leasurly cruising through :D .

If you don't have that experience then (like me) you'll probably need more time to understand why the cars react the way they do, and as you gain that knowledge you'll gradually go faster and faster :)
That is a good point there, Kev. Even to go reasonably fast and not WR fast you need an understanding on how a car reacts. You need to begin to develop a knowledge of weight transfer, grip, throttle control, threshold braking, trailbraking, etc.
LFS isn't comparable to any of the older racing "games" such as NFS or the GT series on Playstation where you just hit the throttle to go, hit the brakes to stop, and turn the wheel to turn. The pedals and steering wheel need finess and you need to understand what the car is doing in order to know how to finess the pedals and steering.
LFS isn't something you just jump into and memorize the inputs to get around the track. You have to have an understanding of the "racing line" as well. Once all that above is established after much practice, then you learn how the car reacts OFF the racing line and you begin to be able to pull off faster times and pass others when they are taking the racing line.
Remember, these super fast guys who hold all the world records and get the fastest times in the servers probably have been playing LFS for years. Where most new guys are coming from the said "older racing games." Experience is how people are pulling off 1:31's and 1:30's in the GTi at blackwood.

Hey janm, how about a replay for us to check out? Maybe someone can give you some tips. .
Thanks guys for keeping the discussion going...:thumb:
About the replays, i don't find them. Where are the replays located. In which folder? I made my best laps using a different pc as i am now. I unfortunatelly don't have an internet connection from that pc, so i have to ''sneak'' into my father's office and connect:D . This pc here cannot give me such pleasure due to weaker components. I made a pb of 1:35.8 yesterday with my settings. Just can't drive through the curves fast enough, always lose the grip and fly off the track:scratchch .
With the current settings and my driving abilities, i suppose i couldn't go faster than 1:35 ... I was already thinking about asking someone, if not posting me the actual setup, at least pointing out what's most important. Right now, as i said, i'm losing time in the curves, driving them very couciously.
Uh, that was a long post...:D
Wish you good racing.:thumb:

Thanks ''thisnameistaken'' for the link. I improved my best lap to 1:33.45 and feel quite sattisfied with this time.:D
The car is much more stable and i can drive faster through turns...
That's just what i needed. It would've taken me a lot of time to figure out the setup myself...
Thanks once again for helping me out with this. I really appreciate it.

Hi, guys.
This is a great game:thumb: . I've done many races online this weekend and had some great fun and saved some great replays...
I can do 34s easily now(xf gti, blackwood), after learning the right braking points.
After pouring only some drops of fuel into the gas tank for the 5 lap race, i can go under 34 already in the second or third lap...I pinched off another 5 hundrets yesterday and drove a pb of 1:33.40.
Please don't consider this post as a nooby, boasting post.Nothing to boast about yet,really...:D
I'm just sharing the enthusiasm for this game.:D
I guess the fastest demo server is the ''Fusion server'' where guys are constantly hitting low 32s and even go under 7:50 for a 5 lap race and they are there for the racing whereas many other servers ''feature'' crashers.
I drove 7:58 yesterday...
Guess i'll get me the licence pretty soon...:thumb:

Yes, you can find the quickest demo XFG drivers (mostly) on the Fusion server. The admins try to keep it clean of wreckers and dangerous drivers. Fun place where your skills will definitely be tested.
Keep it up janm! :D

I think the best is just keep practicing, first I was glad if I got under 1.40.xx
Now I just drive 1.36.XX
I sharpened my PB today to 1.35.63, but a couple of hours ago I just did
1.34.62
So that's my new PB.
I think with practicing i'll easy get 1.33's but I'll have to see that.
I do notice that I get better every day/week :P

Janm, now don't go to the pub for a week, get a 'real' S2 license (remember you're playing the alpha version now, and getting the S2 license means you will get at least a couple of improvement versions until 'final s2' comes out!)
AND... get a wheel :) Yes, that might need a few weeks of saving but it transforms the sim..

Indeed...
I guess the licence will soon be in my hands...:scratchch
It's just that at home i don't have an internet connection. Sadly the ''internet central'' ( don't know the english word for the boxes where local internet connections are located) is full and the national tele-communications firm isn't building a new one soon in my area...
I have this misfortune to be living amongst people who are mostly over 60..Ha!:) Just a couple of young guys in the area and thus not enough ''internet consumers'' to build a central nearby.
Currently i'm playing lfs from my father's office, where i also do my share of work every day. It's not such a good ambient as my room is...It's cold.Brrrrr.:D
And i can play longer sessions only on weekends. During the week, when the day's work is done, i'm usually sick of this place and will maybe just play an hour of lfs...
Sorry, for this bullshit... I just couldn't stop:shrug: . I would like very much to be more involved in this community, but right now the circumstances are as they are. Only weekends for me at the moment:( .
About the wheel...Yes, i'm notising that the keyboard won't bring me world records (readjusting the wheel in the corners, no steady throttle power only full throttle and therefore more couscious turn entries and exits.. )
I'd need, what, about a 100 euros or so for a good wheel?
Wish you good racing...:thumb:

Lol - no worries. They're not all easy to understand, especially if English isn't your first language.
By the way (btw) lol means laugh out loud :p
Anyway, noob has several meanings depending on how you say it and to whom. It's technically short for newbie, but over the years has come to mean newbie in a bad sense. For example, someone new to the game is a newbie. Someone who refuses to learn, or isn't as good as their experience suggests, or who does something stupid, is called a noob.
Later, it's also used in a funny way. Like I call Kev (thisnameistaken) a noob, even though he's not really. He calls me a noob because sometimes I am. So gone are the days when noob = newbie. Now a newbie might not a noob, and someone who isn't new might be a noob.
Hope thats not too confusing. As I said, different people have different opinions on it, depending on context etc. I don't think there is a definitive answer... :D

Woot woot i finally got a 32 last night...250 laps later sheesh i thought it wasnt possible :D
Congrats!
I'm also aiming for that 32s, but i usually get too nervous:schwitz: , after noticing i'm having great split times and mess it up somewhere or just don't drive through turns fast enough...
I'm very close though. My pb being now 1:33.10. I guess i could get some 3 tenths somewhere, but more than that...With a keyboard...The corner and turn entries must be spot on. But that's where the line between relaxed racing and the more serious one is, i guess.
You need to be focused...
The coolness and the confidence comes with practice, experience... The pressure must be quite similar to real racing drivers ,if you are competitive and ambitious, although the racing taking place in a virtual environment. Sometimes i find myself even over-involved in the game, hitting the keyboard and shouting words at drivers not paying attention. Just makes me laugh when i notice that....:D . It's that great feeling, when you beat someone, whos pbs are faster than yours, the overtaking, the communication with the drivers..
p.s.:Maybe it's just because i'm new to online games, but i find the lfs online experience great.:thumb:
