I would love to see how my Toyota Corolla is doing at extreme conditions.

Sure everyone would like to see a real car in the game that they like... but there is licensing issues. Most of the time it just is not possible, because it costs a lot of money.

But the devs get lucky, and sometimes get a few real cars in the game.

For example the RaceAbout and the MRT... both real cars.

Firstly, to use real cars would require expensive rights purchasing from the manufacturer.

Secondly, using real cars would probably be a disaster for a detailed sim like this. Everyone would be comparing how the cars behave in real life as opposed to how they behave in the game. Endless arguments. Thankfully, the two real cars aren't very common, so there is almost no debate. :)

Lastly, nobody wants to drive a Toyota Corolla.

You would have to pay licence fees and have stupid restriction on how damaged etc a car maker will allow their car to be shown etc.

Far easier this way

A few simple steps:

1. Buy LFS S2
2. Download LFSTweak
3. Run LFS.
4. Select the FXO.
5. Use LFSTweak to modify the specs to be closer to those of your prefered shitbox.
6. Drive your shitbox.
7. Realize you can't race online with your shitbox.
8. Realize LFS doesn't need real cars or real tracks.
9. Enjoy LFS for the incredible racing sim that it is.

Once you get to step 9 you'll be much happier. :)

My primary interests in real cars is verifying if they can really reach 240 km/h as well as its handling. Wonder if car sims physics are realistic enough that its feel is not much difference anymore to the real thing that I can race with the real thing after learning to drive from the sim? Or if licensing fees is one issue how about allowing custom parameters for the users to enter for their own cars?

Thanks, but where can I find the LFSTweak? Are there screenshots?

Sorry, I got that wrong. The current program for S2 is Mecanik. There are no screenshots because all it does is alter the specs of the car (mostly related to the engine).

The only reason for using "fantasy cars" is that LFS has only three devs. They don't have the money to buy licenses. This is kind of an excuse of course but a fact also.

Because you are a demo racer you probably haven't played RAC (RaceAbout) which a real car designed by the Helsinki Polytechnic school. Also the MRT (Formula SAE Student) a real life car. As far as I know the devs get those into to the game for free (someone correct if I'm wrong) because in favour the designers can test their cars in LFS. And of course they also get some publicity. :)

And as you've probably noticed most of the cars have a real life examples, some of them even have two. Like the FZ50 / FZ50 GTR is a so called "Porrari" (Ferrari-Porsche), LX4/LX6 is definately a Lotus 7, XR Turbo which the demo also has is a Mitsubishi Starion look-a-like etc. :)

That's a ridiculous excuse. Really.

Damn, I'm on step 3... And driving the FXO is not going to happen :)

Woz: It's all about what kind of contract they made and what are the terms.

racing = competition = equal "hardware" (cars) = action = fun

10000000 zillion differnt cars = no competition = boring, lame etc = no fun

LFS := racing # q.e.d. :D ;)

That's a ridiculous excuse. Really.

You sure about that? People here argue and compare the fantasy LFS cars to real world cars already. Even though LFS cars are not real and only can be defined as loosely based on some real cars, we do still get those discussions. It would DEFINITELY be worse if there were real cars in this game.

Yeah, if we had real (+popular) cars in LFS everybody would be moaning how it doesn't feel like "the real thing" and the "OMG we need a physics patch, this is undrivable" whines would increase tenfold.

But it's a stupid excuse to say "you can't compare LFS with real-life because we have fantasy cars". With the current phys issues I would be kinda afraid how wrong the lap times could be if we had real cars and real tracks.

I'll repeat what you said:

Secondly, using real cars would probably be a disaster for a detailed sim like this.

Some other could say using fantasy cars is a disaster for a detailed sim. :)

I'm in the "real cars are not needed" side.

It would only be costly and give margin to the manufactures dictating how the car would behave on LFS. And it's very difficult to try to compare actual lap times with any simulator lap times, since on reality we feel the forces in our body, has a much wider field of view, and other factors that we will never have on a racing simulation (only for who is likely to spend thousands of dollars on a system that reproduces the forces of the car on the body and a BIG screen, but I think that it's much more reasonable spend this money on real world racing than on a simulation).

It would be nice for the eyes, but LFS isn't supposed to have eye-candy features, but an extremely realistic sim, eventhough without real cars, but cars that act like they were real.

I would like to see real cars but WITHOUT the brand.

Which means someone rent a real car, do all the measurements and we make a duplicate....ain't that nice?

I'm too as long as the cars look almost like real cars (and not like in rFactor for example). I just see it ridiculous to make excuses behind this "we cannot have real cars". The only real reason for that is the fact that Scavier cannot afford car licenses. Is there really someone who wouldn't take real cars if it was possible (if the licensing wasn't the problem)?

And it's very difficult to try to compare actual lap times with any simulator lap times
That's true.

Wouldn't that still make some law issues? I think the current LFS cars are almost look-a-likes and mostly a mixture of 2-3 real life cars to just avoid the law issues.

if it's just physically identical, but visually different, will there still be a problem?

I am not sure either.
