View Full Version : Night or Rain?

If the developers should make either one first, which one would you want? i would want night but realistic and not nfs night, real night.

Wet weather.

What good is 'other weather'. Fog won't really affect traction levels as rain would, nor would it have lovely spray.

yes, they need beams on the ground for night to work, and fs2004 has fine wet wetcher look so they can probably look at that.

Guys, that's one of those threads that got discussed a million times already.

Abd yes, everybody would want to have night and wet weather, BUT, and that's a very big BUT it's very much work to do on scawens side, thus it won't happen in the near future. In fact, I can't see that feature in S2.

Ignoring the fact that threads like this are completely useless, I'd go with wet weather.

Tbh, I think night races would be a try-once-and-then-never-again gimmick, and I can't see the appeal of driving fast without seeing the track. Most people can't even handle the effects of wind, how do you think night races compare to that? (Though granted, that is an argument valid for both night and wet races.)

The only time where night races (implying a dynamic day-night cycle) would be cool is on the 24h race, but that's about it. Driving in rain, however, is something much more common to happen in real racing. Having to deal with changing conditions and pit strategy sounds, at least to me, much more interesting than setting the monitor brightness to max.

Night, simply because I hate racing in the wet (although my only experience of racing in the wet IRL was using slicks :x)

Its exciting

I drove karts few times in rain and not what you'd call light rain
it's what I would call downpoor.

But a wet race at night vissability can't realy get animore poor then in those kind of conditions

Jordan2007

Hmm i wouldnt pick Night time, about 70% of the racing which goes on in real life is it daytime, if we had night time racing, the developers would have to make it so u can put ur headlights on.

i think Wet Weather racing is a laugh!

NitroNitrous
11th October 2008, 11:02
I prefer rain but I think night should be done first because we need functional lights, some other graphic effects and different physics before having rain. Night is a more simple step, so it should be done first.

I'd like rain but that means the Windscreen wipers would have to work, Meaning another button which I dont really care about, Drifting in the Rain would add a whole new Factor to LFS I reckon

dougie-lampkin
11th October 2008, 12:07
I'd like to see wet weather first, as it essentially provides a whole new track. You'd have to adapt to different braking points, different lines, etc. Whereas night driving just favours those who've learned all the tracks off by heart. I would of course like to see night in the future some time too, though :)

I voted for night, but only because I think its a lot easier to programm/animate than really realistic rain weather (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fkwZBY5KIU0) :shrug:Since we don't have a realtistic turbo model, a realistic tyre model, a realistic damage model or a realistic aerodynamics model either I guess Scawen could get away with a not-completely realistic implementation of rain. :tilt:

Basically I'm saying that LFS is a game and no, it won't need 6 months of research to gather data on wet weather physics. I have at least 2 papers at home that have typical force-long./-lat. slipping curves for different types of tyres in them, and that is even before I start looking for papers on the topic in a library.

My personal impression is that a senseful implementation of wet weather physics would be about as much work as a proper damage model that includes external and internal parts. But since we're waiting for an update of the damage system since 2005 I guess a useful estimation for the release-date of wet weather physics would be 2011.

By the way, I find this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV0peze_IMo) a better display of wet weather physics, simply because it sticks with one car for the whole time. :thumb:

Night racing isn't just about darkness. Darkness is just the most visual aspect of it. Change of moisture levels and temperature drop will have an effect on the tires and the track surface which is already something that lfs doesn't do.

Rain on the other hand is something a lot harder, especially if done well. Puddles, water streams going over the track and different hardness levels of rain just to mention few of the very tricky aspects of it. Just to think about how many years it might take from eric to create some "wet" textures makes me cry. I don't see it beign worth the effort, at least if eric is involved any way. But that's just my personal opinion :).

A simple step to begin with would be to have variable track temperatures within sensible limits so the track isn't the same every time. This is still something none of the other sims do and would greatly add a small weather element into racing and lfs. Naturally the tire heating issues need to be solved to take full adventage of it but still it's another quite small step to take with quite big realism/immersion adventages. Later on adding moisture levels and then fog and stuff like that, getting slowly towards the rain conditions would work much better. Even if the actual rain conditions are never seen.

In the end though, night racing is just a novelty and rain is just probably something 95% would not want to do after few laps. More important stuff is needed first and all that blablabla

Anyone else get the hunch that it's possible that variable night/day conditions are potentially in the works? One item on Scawen's current to-do list- 'improved track shadow rendering', suggests teasingly that Scawen might be looking into more sophisticated real-time approaches to shadow rendering... moving sun, ie day/night. It's a long shot maybe, but not unthinkable, especially if you're prone to more utopic LFS imaginings!

If I had to choose, I'd pick night over rain. Rain in the sun would look pretty odd anyway.

16th October 2008, 14:06
Rain all the way.

Night can be easily countered by just turning up monitor gamma (and don't say people wouldn't do it), then people would just go back to standard hotlapping.

A slippery track, on the other hand, would force people to drive completely differently.

bbman
16th October 2008, 16:14
I believe a fully working weather system is the key to implement good night racing... In the night, it's not just getting dark, temperature and humidity change as well, which if we're honest are the defining factors in running a race at night (apart from less concentration potential of the driver due to the late hour)...

lukasauno

swisscosmo
19th October 2008, 17:25
I voted for Wet Weather but i think night will come first because it is easyer to simulate/animate where as if they add rain and wet weather they will have to make windshield wipers and then animate those and make it so it gets rid of the rain on the windshield when the wipers go over it.

gohfeld23

While I get the point of this poll, I believe it's the wrong way of looking at it.
Night and rain need to be part of the same Dynamic weather package for it to be worthy of a sim.

I'm for either 24h weather with changing conditions or leave it as is.

I'm really sorry guys, but these topics make no sense.
According to the spped of LFS development, projected lights will be introduced not before 2033, and wet weather after 2050.
Scawen is working alone, no way this could happen before.
PS: who said to him, he MUST work alone? They don't have enough money to pay salaries???:x

It's a choice, not a restriction.

5haz
20th October 2008, 17:58
Rain ofcourse, it allows those who arent usually front runners to come through and shine.

A good example of wet weather simulation is GP4, I used to love driving Monaco in torrential rain with lovely full distorted reflections off the water in the road, and then eventually a dry line would appear that would actually give you more grip.

If you combined the dynamic weather and track textures of GP4 with the more realistsic skies and lighting of LFS it would make fantastic wet weather driving.

Another important thing would be to make painted kerbs and lines extra slippery as they are in real life as water cannot seep through them like asphalt, it flows over the top making them extra slippery.

Standing water casuing aquaplaning also, and making the racing line slipperier than the outside of the track, because the racing line has no marbles on it, when it rains it has less grip. :)

Spray that actually comes off the wheels and out the bottom of the car would be nice too, not just pathetic grey clouds that spawn somewhere behind the car like in most sims.

They don't have enough money to pay salaries???

If there was anything I could do, I'd work on LFS for them for nothing!

MY VIEW IS THIS: im thinking rain would be awesome in lfs, and adds a more realistic experience to lfs. besides Trakah123 made a night mod that could do for now, this again would solve the rain + night issue in question... you get 3 unlocks pr week. download 2 .exe and make 2 folders. one original, and one with night mod. unlock those as usual, but only have one .exe open at the time. :-) goes for all mods. you only will need to make more folders.... but rain i think is very much needed in lfs. :D

I forgot to read the other posts...

Payable unlockable mode as lets face it to learn lfs in dry day time is task in its self.

As with other people. Rain & night would ideally have to come as a package with air temperature.

In my oppinion(and I have limited knowledge) it's too much a task for one person with a family to build this any time soon.

For the poll I chose rain as that seems easier for now.

I would assume better damage modelling would be next on his list.

Such a daunting task to keep developing this game though with such few staff.

wOoOzZy
21st October 2008, 21:27
I don't see why they don't outsource some of the tasks for LFS. I know there are people who would want to develop, at the very least, tracks. But they could probably let someone else develop some of the code too.

travbrad
9th January 2009, 17:53
I'd prefer wet weather, but I don't expect it to happen (at least not any time soon). For a truly realistic simulation of wet conditions, it would require dynamic weather, and also dynamic track conditions. This is an enormous task, to say the least. I think it would basically require a complete rework of the entire game physics/engine.

I wouldn't mind a more simplistic rain simulation though, just with less grip and some spray/rain effects. I imagine even that would take a huge amount of work though.

ok, uh, listen. What he's trying to say is which one should be finished before the other. This doesn't mean that Scawen should jump right on this, but which would happen first?

Oh, and put me down for wet weather.. T1 would be interesting as everyone pointed out, and all the sand in the game would turn to (yey!) mud! therefore, they would (aww) have to update some effects.. like being able to get the car dirty and stuff. Both of them would definitely be hard to make.
