View Full Version : LFS at EAS Show in Vienna (3rd to 6th Feb)

Cyberseat will again be exhibiting their seat and LFS at this show, much like at the MPH'05 show and the LFS Karting Meet. I'll probably be going (just gotta sort a few things out first), and represent LFS at the show.
We need to have some LFS material and the best thing would be those game CD giveaways that Fujitsu had done at Leipzig. We probably also need to organise a competition as before with some way of fastest displaying lap times and maybe even recording all lap times. Let me know what you think.
Will need to sort out the LFS Flyers again, and sort out a good, reliable way of recording times from the day (with the drivers name ideally).
Anyone else planning on going to the show?

Not Vienna no....I'll probably be in Berlin for the Transmediale digital media festival on around the same dates, but the point of my post is that I'd guess .spr files would be the best way of tracking times?

but the point of my post is that I'd guess .spr files would be the best way of tracking times? Not really, you'd have to change player name each time and load the replay afterwards when you want to see the names & times or you'd need a program to parse the spr headers.
Notepad & pen or laptop & Openoffice calc/excel is the best option.

You can translate, cos I bet not everyone will speak English. And my German/Austrian skills are worse than most foodstuffs. But yeah, the more the merrier (up to a point)!
Oh, and when it's quiet we get to have our own 'internal competition' on who can do the best laps around SO Town in the FO8 :D

That sounds interesting, maybe I'll go to Austria on Saturday/Sunday. Unfortunately I'm going to write two university tests on Monday, so that's not certain yet.
Anyway, good job Tristan! If needed I can help with some translations or the production of S2 demo CDs. :thumb:

You mean that's how much money you make by making some LFS tools? Hmm, maybe I should learn some proper coding skills after all. :D

So you are planning to use the cyberseat and let the drivers do some laps, like in the MHP'05 show (if it was that?)...?
You could also show some good mpr replays...? Show some good racing in various cars could show LFS at best, many cars to choose from and tight and fair racing.

This might be a bit complicated but if you know how to set up a local working version of apache web server and php (google easyphp, winLAMP or XXAMP), you could download the unofficial hotlap chart source, set it up then just upload each SPR.
Because that was written before S2, it will use the screen name rather than licensed name.
Downside is you'd have to get people to run in hotlap mode, and do HLVC laps, so maybe its not really a goer.

Indeed. Good replays could show what LFS is really about. If you just let people "hotlap" Blackwood / GTi (maybe this time with a different and more interesting track?) they don't see what LFS is really about. Maybe you could use some league replays, at least those are clean racing. :D
Has the Cyberseat got it's wheel upgrade yet?
tristancliffe
24th January 2006, 13:10
No, you just turn up. The attendee thing means those who want a stand.
I think I'll just have to cope with a small bit of paper with the times on. I might print of a little table for me to write in.
We let people use the other cars at MPH, and the results were pretty funny. No one could drive the RWD cars, or the high-powered FWD ones (except JJ72, which is how we knew he was a LFS regular). I might try people in the RB4, as it's easy to drive (being 4WD) and requires little skill or experience to keep it on the track.
As far as I know (which isn't much) they'll use a Momo Racing or a DFP this time around, as the Logitech Wingman was a joke. I intend to take some time setting up the wheel and LFS perfectly so that people get the best impression possible.
I think Cyberseat still have some of the fliers from last time left over, so hopefully there will be enough, although it's one thing I have to confirm with Hugh. As for CD's with LFS on, I guess that's possible. To make it more professional it would be nice to have a printed CD, and perhaps a little cardboard wallet or just a clear plastic version. Does anyone have CD printing facilites? Hmmm, I wonder how that LFS CD in the other thread is going...
I think it'll be another success for LFS, and I'm confident the exposure will create more sales of LFS (I think we got a few from the last time at least).

FOX with a good setup is also very easy to drive... Or if you want it to stay AWD, I myself always found the FXR to be easier for beginners, as it has downforce which really helps with braking...

Updated the address in my account to reflect my uni home, and I replied to Victor's PM already, so hopefully will get sorted soon. If you don't get the updated details (with Cowley in them, as opposed to Norwich) then let me know.
It's no problem - I enjoy 'selling' LFS to random members of the public who nearly always think I said Need for Speed :x

Sure is easy, but still very easy to spin compared to the GTi or the RB4 for newbies. What I'll do is, before the 'competition' kicks off, is to run an open session, where I try people in different cars and tracks to see which gets the best reaction. I'm also gonna try the seat through Aston's Eau Rouge just to see if I throw up.

Does anyone have any ideas who the best flight deals can be booked with? I need to fly from London (I live 5 miles from Heathrow, so thats my preference) to Vienna. I don't have much experience with finding cheap flights, and I thought there might be people here who have.
Cheapest so far I've found is either £171 (inc Taxes) on Opodo, but I'd like to get it down a bit from that.

All sorted now I think. Flights and hotel sorted. Hugh has asked me to fix the website, and also add a bit more about LFS, which I can do I think by viewing the source of a page, editing it and sending it back to Hugh via email. But if someone who isn't a website noob wants to do that, then feel free.
I have Florians t-shirt, and I'll be bringing it over with me, so I can return it. I washed it too :D
Looking forward to meeting everyone, and yes, I think I am ready for the tongue. After Bob's nose, my hacksaw and 3J's sarcasm I think I can cope with any of you ;)
Could you get in touch with Victor or Scawen. We need to be able to offer some prizes and these could be some full licence copies of LFS.
Also, could you be in contact with Scawen and get the Live for Speed patch from him which he did for us (I have never installed and tested it). The idea is that we can configure a button to execute a set of commands read in from a config file. The immediate use for this patch is that we can do an immediate restart for the next passenger. Other uses might include changing car or track. Could you get the patch, find out how it works and bring it with you?
All the best
Hugh
I'll leave the option about LFS Licences as prizes upto you. And I assume he means patch Q, so thats already on my USB drive, but if he is referring to something else, that perhaps Scawen spoke to him about, then I'm all ears. I'd have thought Q would be fine though.

Tristan, what about getting an internet connection in the stand, and connect in live to servers with people racing online, not to race with them, just only to show the different kind of races (Normal races, Oval, drift,...) and what they will find if they join into the online community of this piece of art called Live For Speed.
Or at least, for the 3 days, save some .mpr of servers online with races and show them.
Good luck with this Show!!!
cya
tristancliffe
30th January 2006, 11:08
Don't think we'll have an internet connection, so I can't do that.
And would people really be interested in seeing replays of races? Wouldn't people find that a bit dull and prefer to actually race? I mean I'm all for it, and if people have good replays that show off the best racing/drifting/whatever then post them here, and I'll take them with me. No promises about actually showing them though...
Vykos69
30th January 2006, 11:13
tristan, you are right with your presumption. People want to test the seat as much and as often they can. Showing replays on a show like this is not working and not interesting for the crowd. No need for that. Besides that the experience of the seat is the main interest, LFS comes second. So it actually would be annoying to be on a server then, wait for a race, or destroy a race and the onliners start calling them n00bs, even kick them...

Having select replays in a loop on a screen apart from the live game monitor/screen would work as apetizer.
AndroidXP
30th January 2006, 11:47
I agree on that. Maybe if an extra screen is not available, just show replays during idle times when nobody wants to try it. Also, we need to use a track that is most graphically appealing, combined with a replay that atleast tries not to make the current physics shortcomings obvious. I know that LFS is absolutely not about graphics, but who else knows that on the show?
Lure them in with a good replay/appealing track, then blow their minds with the LFS physics :thumb:
E: We also need to have skins on the cars. No matter if very colory or subtle, anything is better than plain color.

ldle times? You're kidding right? At MPH it was packed nearly constantly, and when it was 'empty' there were still a dozen people watching.
I plan on taking a few skins with me like my team skins, but most of the time people are going to be driving alone from inside the car, so skins aren't essential, just might look a bit better to show off the crazy accidents people have trying to do 120mph through T1 at blackwood.

30th January 2006, 13:05
Heh ok, I think we can scrap the idea of replays then :D (but maybe keep one handy as a backup, better safe than sorry). Yes of course they'll be racing from inside the car, but should there ever be a replay shown, or just the outside view used, every car should be skinned.
Next question: track will be Blackwood only? What car(s) will be used?

Yes that's what im talking about, i know that the ppl wants to try the seat and the wheel, and of course dont try to connect to a server and pretend that the newbbies race against the regular racers, that will cause bans.
What i meant is something like you could say "If you buy this product you could be driving in a race like this with many other drivers..." :thumb:
A as i know in my experience in stands and shows, normaly you dont have an internet connection there, so then that's why i said to show .mpr replays, where you can save the chat too and it seems like you were connected but without an internet connection.

To get newbies into the car it is always best to use gti on BL. BL has everything you need to show to a newbie. straights, different turns, chicane, nice looking scenery etc. Skins wont be a prob too, and as experience tells us, everyone who wants a faster car gets it for one turn (yeah talking about wall in t1 here :P ).
About idle times: At GC2005 the cyberseat booth was smaller and at the side of the wall, while the force dynamics stood more in the middle with GTL on it. There were always more people wanting to have a go on the cyberseat.... :hint: ;)

I'd say please don't use Blackwood. It has great scenery but on the other hand (at least for me) it's the most "fantasy-looking" track. Maybe you should use different track (and car?) combo every day.
And the the extra monitor idea would be very good to get on. As we all know one of the best parts in LFS is that how real it looks from the outside. Just get some league replays. Or playback some racing movies (without sound/music, so the legal problems are solved and you don't need to edit them :)), you just need to contact the authors.

@Kid: thanks for the offer, I'm not masochistic, though :p
(I was being sarcastic but I figured not everybody would get it and especially people whose native language isn't english need pretty good sarcasm detectors to spot that. And for those situations I planted the invisible text to make a fool of the ones who don't get it :D)

I'd say please don't use Blackwood. It has great scenery but on the other hand (at least for me) it's the most "fantasy-looking" track. Maybe you should use different track (and car?) combo every day.It is NOT a matter of what YOU like, but what is most useful for newbie drivers, controllable and entertaining. And there you need a rather short track and a driveable car for people who have never driven a sim. The city tracks are too difficult, fern bay isnt graphically up to date and Aston, kyoto and westhill are boring with the slower cars (always pov of a newbie). Blackwood has nice trees, turning windmills etc. At the moment, a visitor comes back several times, and there is some time, he can have a drive in another car and on another track, but that's the minority. You dont have to change track and car daily therefor, cause the visitor from sunday doesnt know - and doesnt care - which car was driven on saturday, except he takes part in the competition. Then he might want to drive exact same car and track combo...
And the the extra monitor idea would be very good to get on. As we all know one of the best parts in LFS is that how real it looks from the outside. Just get some league replays. Or playback some racing movies (without sound/music, so the legal problems are solved and you don't need to edit them :)), you just need to contact the authors.
this is a simple money and place issue.
All those who give nice and fast ideas, please remember that this isnt the first show, cyberseat is doing with LFS, besides the people at the booth arent the first time on such a show. There already exists some experience, and as you can read from my answers, which are based on experience with LFS and some shows over the last couple of years.
FFS, let the pros do their work! j/k rock on guys
Looking for some two funny days in vienna, guys!

Blackwood is rather long track. Aston Club or even Cadet would fit perfectly with the GTi if that's the car you are going to use. The problem with Blackwood is that it looks too much a fantasy (of course it is fantasy but e.g. Aston and Kyoto looks like a real life track). :)

So you don't even consider that? :(

The short tracks like Club and Cadet are to easy though - Blackwood is a brilliant balance of difficulty and length, so that people get a decent amount of time on the seat (only 3 laps remember), and experience all it has to offer.

Aston Club is way to difficult: the chicane in sector one is a more: "I have to know where to go cause i cant see" - thing, last turn/chicane is a killer too.
So you don't even consider that? :(
That is not in our hands, besides the fact, that it doesnt attract people.

Dort sieht man dann zumindest die EAS aufgelistet. Anfahrtsplan, etc. gibts links, ansonsten nur den Link auf die EAS page, den ich eh auch schon angegeben habe.

I think Florian is doing something with CD's, so how are these going (out of interest)? Yes, I've ordered some CDs last week, now I only hope that they'll arrive in time.
Anyway, looking forward to meet you on Saturday. I'll arrive around 8:51 at the trainstation west (Westbahnhof), you will probably still be sleeping at the time :scratchch

Nearly ready! Got a few things to collect from Staines for Cyberseat, and a bit of throwing stuff into a bag, and then we're off.
On my memory stick I have Patch Q, and I have figured out how to map restarts onto a wheel button (lovely!), as well as a few skins and setups that might come in handy. Anything else I should take?
Leaving here at about 5.30 to catch a bus to Heathrow, and my flight is at 8pm, so if you hear any news about Austrian Airlines crashing, let my parents know :p
Thanks for all the suggestions and the support (and the help if you're actually coming), and thanks to Scawen and Victor for sending me the postcards.

So, I decided to shell out the 50€ to go to the EAS - I've just returned and what can I say? It was great meeting all those nice people there, and while it wasn't quite half the forum, it was great fun nevertheless.
Kudos to Vykos and Flo, who're on their way back to Germany right now () and of course also to bbman and tristan, which I'll be seeing again tomorrow anyways.
To the EAS itself, well IMO it's not quite the right environment for LFS, but more for Cyberseat which was clearly the main attraction (with LFS luring in the curious :D). The people there weren't quite the racing enthusiasts but more of the businessman kind. You have to understand, these were people who really *considered* buying the Cyberseat (the setup is about 12.000€, mind you), which is normally far out of range for the causal gamer.
The only thing that really sucked was the attendee model of the EAS, because 50€ entry fee is simply too much and scares away anyone who just wants to take a casual look at the exhibits.
Whatever, I'm back again tomorrow, and I think you can expect pictures then too (Vykos and Flo took some). :)

The fastest time someone drove was 1:50 (GTi@BL1) which wasn't bad at all considering he did it on his third lap playing LFS the first time ever. Most other people had laptimes more in the range of three to five minutes, if they even finished at all.
Most of the time it went like this:
Kiss wall at T1
Spin out at chicane (wth, spin out in the GTi?)
T3: many people learned by then that when we say "brake now" we mean it. Resulted just getting a bit sandy tyres most of the time.
Chicane#2: Saw that funny line of tyres over there? They're gone now.
T6: See T3
T7: I think there were surprisingly few wall-smacks there, but touching the grass was pretty common.
Also people would plow into corners full brakes and full lock everytime (poor tyres :().
Anyways, my best time at FOX/BL1 was 1:12.something so the Cyberseat, while being fun, doesn't make you any faster, period.

heya,
I got back yesterday evening but was so damn tired, I fell to bed immediately. ;) Just sorting the pics and movies I made. Will upload them during the day. It was more a trade show, than a public exposition. Therefor it was really intersting for some contacts with some companies that might be interested in the Cyberseat and/or LFS. On the other hand, those guys, who were there all had a lot of ufn, and enjoyed thereselves in it. One thing actually got proven:
Almost every normal driver, who had some experience with games or not, crashed in t1, except a 13 year old girl and a mid-40 year old former real racedriver without any experience in games!!! He impressed me the most, I have to say. He was also able to go with the f08 after one lap gti, and understanding it. So being gentle on the throttle etc. Except him screaming all the time: "I want a track I know, to show you what I can do!!!" :D
So, pics are coming later, tristan is actually a funny guy, but he is definitely compensating his lack of speed on the track and at drinking beer with his postcount here :P (sorry tristan, you know I had to :P )

Almost every normal driver, who had some experience with games or not, crashed in t1, except a 13 year old girl and a mid-40 year old former real racedriver without any experience in games!!!Today there were two drivers battling it out to get the fastest times and I think one managed to do a 1:46. The one was in his late twenties I guess and the other like mid thirty.
What really impressed me was an 7 or 8 year old boy who managed to do a 1:58 with only very few crashes - he was far better than most of the people there and learned amazingly fast. Bummer that the seat was way too big for him, had to stuff my pullover behind his back or he wouldn't have reached the wheel/pedals :D
It was really fun seeing people coming back again and again, because they simply couldn't get enough of the LFS/Cyberseat combo. You could also immediately notice if someone has driven races in RL or not; they just know the concept of ideal line and careful throttle usage. Others just went for the extremes: full/no throttle, full/no brakes, lock to lock steering... you get the idea.
Today we also had a much better setup for the GTi and you really noticed how much easier it was to drive for the people. The old one had quite alot of lift-off oversteer and also the max lock and brake power was quite higher, making their poor driving even worse.
Oh well, I'm pretty tired now, helped the Cyberseat guys packing up their stuff but I'm glad they took me for a ride home  They're on the way to Linz now and tristan should be on the plane as I type this. All in all it was great fun and I hope to see you guys sometime again, maybe at the GC in Leipzig :)

Now for my review (racing's over now, so I've time - till the superbowl... :D):
When I first got there and I've been told the price, I had to think long if it would be worth spending € 50 on it... I did anyway, because I thought: "When do I really get to know two well-known guys from the community, plus maybe a few members of the austrian community?" I have to say, I wasn't disappointed in any way... First, I made a little tour to look, what the expo was all about... It wasn't, what I expected: Parts for roller coasters, inflatable castles and such stuff isn't exactly what I'm interested in... When I came to the cyberseat booth, Vykos was there and wanted to explain LfS to me (I was just quiet and let him talk) and when Tristan came back from lunch, he did exactly the same... :D (yeah, I know, cheap copy of JJ79 :P) The whole Cyberseat-Crew was VERY friendly and involved me really... We did some "attention-runs" (like FZ 50 on BL Rally-X), which really worked most of the time (even with all the businessmen)... Of course, the FO8 was THE choice to attract the people there... In the evening, I was invited to the exhibitor's receipt, for which I can't be thankful enough... Tristan and Vykos went for a pub afterwards (at about quarter to midnight), while I went home to sleep...
When I arrived at the booth the next day, GP4Flo was already there and had his first run on the cyberseat... AndroidXP was already there also, I think, and we pretty much did the same as the day before: Getting the attention of the people, so they tested it out too... The seat itself is very much fun, it may only lack the motion for oversteer and the monitor should be moving too, but other than that, it really adds so MUCH immersion to the race, you just want to have it... Vykos left us at about 5 pm that day to get home to his family... After the expo closed for the day, Tristan, Flo, Android and me went to a restaurant called "Centimeter", and we had diner and some drinks... Flo left early to catch his train home, and the three of us got to talk till about half past eleven, then we all went home/back to the hotel...
Today, I had troubles getting to the expo in time and again, we had very much fun with the seat... With Vykos gone, Android and me now were in charge of talking to the german-speaking customers, which struggled with english... I think, people were as much interested in the seat as they were in LfS, but that might be just my imagination... :D I helped a bit with packing the stuff, to return at least some of the kindness they showed me, but unfortunately, I had to go...
To sum it up: It wasn't so bad spending the money, I got three fun days and a little insight about LfS (which Vykos and Tristan passed onto me, thx), and most important, I got to know some nice guys I wouldn't had the chance to meet then... :)

Time for my review (you knew I was going to, so don't act all surprised!).
As mentioned already, LFS was not in the right environment to generate many sales, but the cyberseat was attracting attention from lots of people - including billionaire owners of Dubai Autodrome, an American setting up a driving school in Mexico and of course theme park operators. No actual sales of the seat, but with luck they'll get a few enquiries in a few days.
I can't say how much I enjoyed the company of Vykos, Flo, Android and bbman. It was really great to talk to them about LFS, to see Florian again (although I forgot his t-shirt and left it at the hotel), and to chat to Vykos about a huge range of topics - a really great bunch of guys. To set the record straight, I only had one or two small beers less than Jo (Vykos), could walk much better than him, and didn't have a 12 hour hangover, so he can mock all he wants! :p
The 2m sausage was a bit weird - very dry, and with not much other than sausage and mustard. And yes, I cut it up, if only because of the effect when it comes out, not when it goes in :D
Hotel was nice, and I saw a bit of Vienna on my hour walks home, so that was nice. But I wouldn't mind if it was warmer than -10 degrees C...
Shame we couldn't get Android and bbman in for free, but they turned up a bit out of the blue, so we didn't have passes for them. CrazyIce never made it it seems (unless he was just shy, pretended to be a punter and can't drive!).
We had a driver who hill climbs caterhams, and he said wow, it feels so real. A bit too little grip, and hard to drive without feeling the car through the seat, but appears to behave much like a caterham should (within the limitations of a 240 degree wheel and what have you).
I have promised to go to the Games Convention with Jo, so I can't wait. Just hope all your home life 'problems' sort themselves out without too much trouble.
And finally (long post), thanks to Scawen and Victor for the assistance, support and postcards. We have about 250 postcards left (Cyberseat kept them for future events) so 1000 is about right for this type of show. Cyberseat is, I think, hoping to exhibit at E3, and maybe a US based LFSer would like to offer his support to Cyberseat, and take the opportunity to spread the LFS word (expenses paid mostly I guess).

No, the screen doesn't move. It's kinda weird when you first try it because you have to compensate for all the movement and it's really hard to concentrate on the screen/sounds when your view is constantly being thrown around :rolleyes2
One idea I had in the morning today, that could vastly improve the feel of the Cyberseat was to set the max G simulation to 2 instead of 1 like it is now (I think). What I mean is, that the maximum inclination you get with the seat is equal to 1G in LFS. Now with most cars we experience more than 1G in almost every corner, resulting in hitting the bumpstops of the Cyberseat all the time.
Setting that threshold to 2G would greatly smooth out the ride IMO.
tristancliffe
6th February 2006, 11:35
They did tweak the code a bit, and it felt a little better - the hills and crests were less noticable, and bumps more so. But the seat still moves with the G's on the whole car, and not the g's (through driving or cars leaning) acting on the driver. But we discussed a few things with them, and they hope to be able to improve that, as well as creating Seat profiles so it reacts quicker in the faster cars, yet stills uses the full range in the slower ones.
Also Fordie, did you have the shorter movie from MPH? I think Hugh wants it on the website but they didn't actually download it when you hosted it.
