Every time I try to connect any server I get the same message: "Did not receive guest info". I searched over the forum but was unable to find any solution. The problem came with patch Z (all earlier patches have worked great). I have had no problems with any other game.
Im all clueless what to do so please help me!:(

Sorry, scoured the forums & couldn't find an answer to this. Have tried restarting PC & router. Yes, they are turned on. At least I didn't start my own thread !? Obviously can't put down the cash until this works.
I started LFS on Y & have now tried Z but have never managed to race online. (so neither patch has worked for me, unlike other Z only problems)
I can see how many possible hosts there are, but always get "NO REPLY" from 99% so only have 1 or 2 actual hosts I can chose from.
If a host does come up in the list & I try to connect, it will always (ALWAYS) fails at "DID NOT RECEIVE GUEST INFO"
Running XPSP2 (firewall off) on P4 2.8 (single) 512Mb, no AntiVirus. (new clean system & this is the 1st thing I'm trying to do on it) All LFS visual effects turned right down. Have tried P4 laptop - same result.
Connection=ADSL1 512/128
ISP=Internode.on.net (Adelaide, Australia & I'm in Melbourne)
Router/Modem=Billion/BiPac 7404VGP with 29339 & 63392 TCP & UDP open. Have tried turning router firewall OFF with no change. So many other settings on it though :rolleyes2
speedtest.net result= 426/87 @49ms to Melbourne, 426/105@95ms to Sydney
Pingplotter suggests getting up around ~50ms to Melbourne, 190ms to Sydney, then over 300ms to UK all with 0% packet loss (if I'm reading it right).
Tried my company wireless modem (ISP=Optus.com.au) and it worked ok while showing 200ms on LFS board. (so PC is ok ?) Shows hosts, connects, races, but just had typical wireless lag (& prospect of getting me fired)
If problem is ISP, how do I gather the evidence to convince them ? They'll just do a download speed test & tell me everythings ok won't they ? And I know file downloading is fine - 426/87 out of 512/128kb/s looks right to me.
Thanks in advance,
batteryy

I couldn't help noticing that you all guys are demo users. From patch Z all users (incuding demo users) must have an account on lfsworld.net in order to race online, so that may be your problem. Have you opened an account on lfsworld?

That definitely isn´t the problem. I have created the account for it and you cant enter the multiplayer lobby without the registration and password anyway.
Please LFS developers whatever you changed in joining the servers please change it back just like it was in the earlier versions!!

I also second / third / fourth / etc, etc, etc everything that has been said above ,i have had nothing but problems since the Z patch for example ,being cut off in mid race , not being able to join numerous servers ,not receiving guest info, this is really , really annoying and also ruins good racing from 99.9% of lfs users ,please please please change back whatever it is you guys changed ,you have spoilt a first class racing sim.

Sure. Because 0,01% of drivers have problems after the Patch, it ruined the whole game.
Same with me, got on Single Seater 1 broke the record and lost connection, now I can't play LFS without losing connection, probably a problem with my internet, i've switched router on/off but still doesn't work,

I've hit some more issues now!! I tried to play in single player and noticed that I can't see the driver in FBM! (Haven't tried the other cars yet...) I have now tried reinstalling and re-downloading but nothing seems to help. The missing driver must mean that there is something wrong either with my PC or the installing.
I hope this could be solved soon...
EDIT: I can actually see the driver in other views but I can't see the hands in the cockpit view. The same appears in all the cars.

thats why in lfs you can chance the options. go Options/view/and somewhere there you can read ''driver OFF wheel ON'' keep clicking that message till there is ''driver ON wheel ON''

Btw. what would be the best way to contact the LFS devs about this MP joining issue?:scratchch

I have now contacted LFS devs via e-mail. I hope they take this seriously and try to do something about it...

These problems only in patch Z? Or have you had these problems earlier??

Ok, Tracert (TraceRoute) is a command that shows you the route taken by your data to reach a particular desination. It tells you every step of the route and how long it takes. You need to run from a command prompt (DOS box) by going Start > Run and typing "cmd" (this is XP, unsure about Vista?).
Anyway, thats what it is, but how to apply it to LFS? ... luckily Victor has posted a very good guide on this problem.

Today I opened all the txt files and took a look whats in them. In about half way down in cfg.txt file I found few lines about the last server I had tried to join in:
Server IP 0.0.0.0
Server Name ^7Team ^4X^7cite Demo
Server Port 63392
The port looks sensible but the server IP is strange. I've tried with several servers and it always says "server IP 0.0.0.0". Could someone with working LFS check if it should or shouldn't be like that. I mean no wonder you cannot receive guest info if you try to receive it from IP 0.0.0.0! Or is the IP registered like that because the connection was failed?

Anyone??The IP entry is irrelevant. That's only recorded if you join a LAN server.
Assuming you've checked your LOCAL firewalls (i.e. if you used the Windows firewall, remove LFS from it, then run LFS in windowed mode, and reallow LFS access when it prompts you again - use roughly the same procedure for other firewall software) - the reason for this is how firewall software identifies a program and whether or allow it access, I won't bore you with the details.
If it's not this, then I'd suggest talking to your ISP as to whether or not they changed any internal policies, such as packet mangling (throttling, blocking, etc.) before I started looking at anything else local to your machine. Given that only a small minority of people are having issues it makes more sense that it's not something related directly with LFS itself, but perhaps some combination of hardware and LFS, or simply your ISP changed something when the patch was released.
Quickest way to test that would be to download an older patch and try to join an older server. If this works it's still no guarantee that things have not altered at your ISP. IT could be that they used a way to detect LFS and exclude it from any packet mangling, and that now no longer works (unlikely as I do not believe the netcode has changed much in Z).
If that works start providing more details about your computer, turn network debugging on in LFS, and attach the debug to a post when you fail to connect.
The fact that you can talk to the master server is irrelevant, as thats only used to get a list of servers. Since you can get a list, you clearly can talk to the master.

I have already checked my firewall. It's not that.
I don't know much about these things but every time I turn my computer on I can join one (and just one) server with two or less players in it so can the problem really be in something blocked in internet traffic?
So changing my ISP would possibly solve the problem??
Can I somehow make a similar host-connecting test to some particular server as I have done to the master server in an earlier post?

As the angry angel metioned I think it must be partly hardware issue as there are people all over the world (Finland, UK, Australia, Canada...) having this problem. I bet there is at least some people in Finland playing LFS with same ISP and same kind of connection as I am and they aren't having any problems. Why? Because they have different PC's? My PC is nearly 5 years old so that may be part of the problem (I have the newest updates though).

My PC is 6 years old and everything works fine. What i do mean to see is that more racers get a time-out and disconnection from the server than in patch Y. There must be something different in patch Z i think.

I may have a way round the problem here!!
1. I first joined a server that had no players in it.
2. I left the first almost immediately and joined another server that had one player in it and drove there a few laps.
3. I joined a server with ~5 players in it and it worked (usually says "did not receive guest info")!!:woohoo:
4. I was able to join any server!!
Worked twice with me today. I just hope it's nothing temporary.
EDIT: My LFS seems to be now working fine! I can join any server normally. I haven't changed any settings or done anything so either the game has fixed itself or devs have done something about it.

I also have the same problem.
I upgraded to patch Z in the same time than upgrade to windows XP pro SP3. So I suspect more this SP3 than patch Z. Are the other concerned people equipped with SP3?
What are doing LFS client and server when transferring the guest info would be interesting.

I now have this problem. Or at least one very similar. I can connect to some servers trouble free and ther servers I get "Lost Connection to host" within seconds of joining.
There is one particular server that I play alot on and have always been able to connect, have good ping and untill yesterday never lost connection.
I have connected to this server many times trouble free with patch Z. I am not banned in any way from the server - quite simply something has changed. I have checked ports & firewall and all is fine, the only thing I can think of is that I did some file maint on my PC at the weekend.
Not sure if its relevant but this included cleaning browsing history, saved passwords etc.
Doubt its got anything to do with it but im outta ideas.

FYI, I had this last night, whereby I was playing along fine, and for seemingly no reason my connection was dropped. I dropped out to Windows, and my Wireless connection had dropped. After a few seconds, it re-negotiated again just fine.
So I started playing again, and rejoined a new server, played for about five minutes, and again I dropped from the host. Again, Wireless networking was down, and again it re-negotiated fine. It did this possibly five or six time, and only sorted once I rebooted.
It appeared that it was only happening when I was playing the game. I've been connected remotely to my PC at home all day today without a single packet lost, so I'll test tonight and see if starting the game causes Wireless to drop again. I suspect this might be more of an issue with the Windows TCP/IP stack, so I'll check the log files later and report back.

I read from some other thread that some sort of "power-save modes" can cause this sort of problems. Try checking if your internet connection or windows is set to go in power-save mode after certain amount of time. If windows doesn't recognize that you are playing LFS it can just go in sleep mode and cut up the internet connection too.

I have that problem as wel. "Did not recieve guest info".
I have checked with my firewall. I donät have one installedon my computer but I have one in my router. I have tried DMZ, without router and everything. Nothing works for me. I have been abel to join two servers now in two days and none of them had more than 3 players online.

That's I want to know too to understand the problem. I gonna ask the developers for it.
I tried Wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org/) but my network knowledge is limited and I can only see that there's no network traffic when LFS is waiting guest info..
mmm, we are going nowhere :weeping:
It would be shameful to give up LFS just because of that connection problem :tombstone

Same here. I can't see any connection attempts to either the master server or the actually host. and now I mean nothing happens.
It would be nice to know what it is actually waiting for. Is it my computer who's listening for something that never reaches my computer. Yes, there is nothing arriving at my network cable. I have sniffed for everything but nothing comes up.
I have tried without my router and the built-in firewall so I have exposed myself to the internet without any firewall at all so that's not a issue here (with blocked packages in the FW).
I think it is somekind of a major error actually. If it was just one server that I had this kind of problem with then I could understand that it was something with just that server which didn't send me the guest info but not it is almost every server.
I wouldn't like to give this game up just because this! It's a good game/simulator! but it's not fun to drive alone :(
Tell me/us if you get any answers from any developer!

i find it really strange that people think "if it's just one server, it would be that server's fault but it's all servers so this must be LFS's fault, even though before I had no problems at all".
Have you (most people in this thread) EVER considered it could be your ISP's fault? Or perhaps it's time to do a virus / spyware check if weird things happen?
Ever wondered why there are hundreds of people online who have no problem whatsoever?
With many people racing online there's bound to always be a certain percentage of people with connection or computer problems. Until there's a no-connection epidemic you can be pretty sure it's not LFS at fault when you can't connect to a host.
Sorry if that sounds rude, but I'm tired of always having to say the same thing every time and I'm tired of having to convince people that there's other things than LFS that can go wrong and I'm tired of being blamed of stuff we have no control over. I long for the day that people start to think for themselves a bit more.

As for the guest info message and what it means - it's pretty straight forward : when you connect to a host you need to tell the host about yourself, so the host knows who joins. That's guest info.

Actually I've not found out yet the origin of the problem, so I didn't deduced it's LFS's fault.
About my ISP, I doubt that it blocks the guest info packets and not all the other ones (including the underground websites I visit sometimes ) but if it's the case, LFS would be finished for me :weeping:
Ever wondered why there are hundreds of people online who have no problem whatsoever?
That is the question.
As for the guest info message and what it means - it's pretty straight forward : when you connect to a host you need to tell the host about yourself, so the host knows who joins. That's guest info.
Ahh :D ok thanks for the info. Time for me to go deeper in my investigation.
PS: you are angry? me not :)

Guys I found a clue
I checked the bigger difference since last time I've played LFS online: my modem.
I switched back to my good ol' modem and configured a PPPoE connection within XP (the username and password are stored in windows not in the modem which acts in this case in bridge mode). Connect to a LFS server, it works.
Just after I've reinstalled my new current modem, connect to a LFS server, it doesn't work.
It seems that the modem my ISP forced me to use doesn't stop to prove me it's a sh*t. But it's not a firewall problem, nor a virus.
So I must find now what exactly in that crap blocks the guest info. But I'm starting to think that the guest info may be wrong and the server could not reach the player's computer.

Good new
I managed to connect to any LFS server.
I applied the same internet connection method with my new modem as my old one. It seems to like it because it automatically switched to bridge mode :D. I still hate this modem..
I remember that I had lowID problem with eMule several years ago with my old modem. That's why I switched it to bridge mode. It's probably the same problem with LFS.
Here is my workaround; sorry for French XP screenshots (and possible wrong translation to english):
Open network connections in windows configuration panel
Then click on "create a new connection" on the left
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5249/LFSguestinfo.th.png (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=LFSguestinfo.png)
Click "next" and select "establish a new connection to internet"
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/6721/LFSguestinfo2.th.png (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=LFSguestinfo2.png)
Select "Manually setup my connection"
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7240/LFSguestinfo3.th.png (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=LFSguestinfo3.png)
Select "Connect to a (wide band) using an username and a password"
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/5674/lfsguestinfo6er8.th.png (http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lfsguestinfo6er8.png)
Enter a name for your connection
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7915/LFSguestinfo4.th.png (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=LFSguestinfo4.png)
Enter the username and password your ISP gave to you. NEVER tell them to ANYONE!!
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/6655/LFSguestinfo5.th.png (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=LFSguestinfo5.png)
Click finish
Before using this connection make sure your modem is disconnected from internet (not from your computer!) and set it up to make it in bridge mode (depending on the model, maybe it's automatic, I don't know)
you can connect to internet with your new connection method
Hope this will help the most users as possible.. For me the problem is solved.

That's good you found your problem and could fix it.
I have also found mine!
For start, you can't have F-Secure (antivirus) online. You need to deactivate it. For some reasons it will stop the guest info package to be received. I knew that since earlier so that hasn't been on.
But the major thing was my ISP. I have 10MBit/s connection via fiber. (wonderful by the way) I called them and told me my problem. they told me that there wasn't anything wrong with my connection so I had to get some tracert's and mailed them to them. It was some kind of routing/BGP-problems that they had. Sometimes depending on the load they had at the time my traffic was routed in different ways. One of the ways had a routing problem.
So my problem was actually a ISP-problem! But keep in mind to de-activate your anti-virus program.

i may be having that F-secure problem. but im not sure should i de-activate it. i got a virus on my computer, but f-secure blocks it from doing anything. so, if i turn it off, i will relase a virus

actually, no. i tried manually but it cant be removed. than i tried trough f-secure and it couldnt errase it.
Bogey Jammer
19th August 2008, 15:13
Trying to remove it in safe mode would be dangerous since the anti-virus could not be loaded and the virus would expand freely during the startup.
I know that a Mandriva linux Live CD can browse windows partitions but I can't remember if it can delete files on them. Look for a similar application that doesn't load your windows installation's kernels but allows you to remove safely the virus.
Note that it's I'm thinking, it may be a wrong method though.

If you mean me with this I'm the one who e-mailed you about this issue (with the link to this thread) and in your reply you said you would keep following this thread. By when I sent the message you quoted you hadn't shown any activity in this thread and I was just expecting you to say something atleast. If you don't remember my e-mail I think I still have it.

Following a thread means reading it, not replying. :tilt: For example, when someone says "I follow soccer", they are not saying that they are a soccer player, they are saying that they watch soccer games in person/on T.V. Same concept. Following does not mean taking part in.

First, I'm sorry that I'm always here misleading and confusing people and talking offtopic but I promise that after this post I'll shut up.
Second, even though developers of LFS must be very busy (at least if they have a life outside LFS) I was waiting a short post even just one sentence "ok you have been heard by developers" or something like that. And like I've said before I was getting a bit frustrated by then...
But now I'll shut my mouth about this.:x

I may have a way round the problem here!!
1. I first joined a server that had no players in it.
2. I left the first almost immediately and joined another server that had one player in it and drove there a few laps.
3. I joined a server with ~5 players in it and it worked (usually says "did not receive guest info")!!:woohoo:
4. I was able to join any server!!
Worked twice with me today. I just hope it's nothing temporary.
EDIT: My LFS seems to be now working fine! I can join any server normally. I haven't changed any settings or done anything so either the game has fixed itself or devs have done something about it.
quess what, i did that on S2 aand... i got it working:woohoo: thanks for advice. i was able to join shik-D server with 22 players in it

After a long stint away from the game, I've returned only to run into this problem.
Anyone here have O2 as their ISP? Did you have to do anything special to get it working? I've forwarded ports 29339 and 63392 as mentioned in another thread, but no joy.
Admitedly alot has changed in my setup since I last played online. XP SP2 with Sky as ISP to Vista x64 with O2 as ISP.
Any tips?

I have the same problem.
This is so strange... When i had Windows XP Pro, I hadnt this problem. Now i changed it to Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, and i have "Did not receive guest info". Setiings of my router (Pentagram Cerberus P 6331-42) are the same as before. I tried to disable Vista's firewall, but it doesnt help.
When i connected my old ADSL modem, it works. So, something must be wrong with my router. But why with XP was ok ? Operating system can change router config ? I really dont understand this...
I dont want to change OS. Vista works very well, except this issue with LFS.
May someone help me ?

I had this REALLY annoying too. It started occuring after I did a format. I replaced my modem for a different reason with the same issue.
Doing the above worked. Setup the modem to use a 'Pure Bridge' rather than 'PPPoE and create an internet connection from within windows.
Who knows why it worked before and not now. Hopefully the developers find a solution.

There's probably a safety setting in your router that prevents the guest info to your pc. An embedded firewall?
Has your Vista's firewall disabled?

Hallo,
i´m from germany and got the same problem, but here is my solution. First i will say, i had tested all, 3 kinds of routers, without firewall and defender, exposted host etc. Nothing had changed this problem. Then I had installed LFSs on my working PC with XP home, connected with the same router (Fritzbox 7270) and its running fine!! I can connect to all Servers in Router-Mode. Trying two minutes later with my gaming PC on Vista 64bit, i bacame the error message.
then i got it!! I have an onboard lan card on an asus board. A few minutes ago i had installed a second lancard from logilink, now its running without an error.
Don´t know why, but ists running ;) I´m very happy now.
Hope i will help you guys with same problem!!

I have the same problem. And I also had it about a month ago.
I have never used anything else than Vista on LFS S2, so this problem has nothing to do with the system. I'm also on the same router as before, so that's not it either. I even tried to trace my connection to master server, and nothing wrong there either. Sometimes I don't get server info, and often I don't get guest info...

This is really getting annoying, really annoying.
Haven’t been able to play for over 2 months now.
This has to be straightened up, either it’s an ISP/routing problem, game problem, lfs server’s problem, whatever, but this is, unacceptable, we need an answer to WHAT is causing this problem, so we can ALL resolve it
if it’s not the guest info is the track data, either way the game is not working in multiplayer mode.
I think that for a game I paid for, one would have expected more support than what it is in this thread.
