Hey guys i was wondering how do u race in LFS?
as in tactics, startegies and so on...
For me
In turn one (Blackwood of course) on the first lap i like to brake early and let people pass me as there is always going to be one idiot crashing. I tend to play defensive and follow the person in front of me until they make a mistake. If i cannot keep up i will check my position if i have the potential for a podium i will take it easy and let them pull ahead but if im in a position where i have nothing to lose i will push my car to the limits.
This is what i do when i race especially with the FBM.

well I've kinda stuck with my Mate, being a learner, but I find I'm better on the chase, I get antsy on big corners with a crowd behind me. not so much a strategy as it is my noobness.
Mostly in UFr but Ive been hotlapping tonight in the FXR and it kinda growing on me, though I want to use H shifter :(

Mostly the same as the OP. i take it easy on T1 and let ppl pass if they want. then ill start to give it all, but the difference is that ill not ease untill i get first. witch never happens. never. untill. now.

I also take it quite easy at the starts, trying to avoid t1 messups. Then from there on I will push hard and focus on being consistent. If I was not consistent my pace alone would not usually put me near the front, so I rely on being consistent to help bring me up the field. This works especially well in longer races of course :P

I drive as hard as I can every lap, even in races
it often ends with me quitting early in a heaping pile of twisted and broken metal
T1 I brake a bit early, and get on the gas soon and try to get a run on people as I find the holes in the traffic. People normally go in too deep and get tangled with other people and have to lift mid corner, I'm trying to accelerate all the way through like normal.

I lot to control the car a lot with wheel and less with throttle, that's one of the main reasons why I like XRT so much and not FO8 :)
I do brake kinda too late, probably because it gives you feeling that you're doing it faster and it in pretty lot of cases is (fast in, fast out rocks if you manage to get fast out with fast in), but that gives me problems with front tires in longer races, so I'm kinda working on that.
Else then that I can be overaggressive on defending :D

Back when I raced for real I always favoured understear because my arms would get tired too quickly if I had oversteer, so when I race I use the FXO. My strategy therefore is to loose 8 places at the start, and to try and gain 1 or 2 of them back by the end of the race.
danowat
10th July 2008, 07:45
I find a little bit of oversteer works wonders in the FXO, the first corner of Aston Club is a great corner for "backing it in", makes it easy to get the car pointing in the right direcition for a tight apex and good exit.

And if there's a smash on T1 in front of me, I always, *always* seem to get hit by a stray car and end up second to last, and that only because the car behind me has wrecked their suspension..

My style is (or rather was since it's near-impossible to race well with a pad) slow and consistent. My lap times weren't quick, but they were always within about .2 of second of each other. I always felt with a decent setup or a better wheel I could've been competitive.
I'm always a victim of T1 as well, no matter where on the track I position myself or how close to the front I am. Someone invariably ends up punting me into a wall or at least caving in some part of my car.

I try to do that as Danowat said, plus I tend to think other cars as if they are real cars
(avoiding contact etc.. as you do in real life),
means, driving respectfully and clean is my main concern.
Also consistency is important as many people agrees.
I race "by the book", so obeying the racing rules is also very important IMO.

Surviving Turn 1 carnage is critical, letting a few cars past if I'm near the back of the grid often works out in my favour, but if you're further up the field it's not really possible and it's more a case of drive with care and hope for good luck. Depending on the Turn 1 outcome, I then see each race largely as a series of duels for the next position ahead. Sometimes an outbreak of angry chat followed by a reduction in your race position by 1 or 2 shows that someone ahead has done you a favour, which is always nice of them. :D After a while in the game you build a mental list of who's ultra-quick and you just let them through, others who are on a par with you and you could have a good tussle with, and then there are those who crash a lot or are easily hassled into letting you through. Ultimate aim to finish the race in one piece after a clean race, maybe having beaten someone you never finished ahead of before, which gives plenty of satisfaction. A win or podium (rare in my case) are the icing on the cake and a nice surprise after a good race but I rarely expect either. :)

Strategies change depending on the type of race.
League racing, take it easy at first. Get into a rythm. Work on being smooth (or somewhat smooth in my case). Watch and wait for the opportunity to gain on the car in front of me. Long league races, I race the car in front and the car behind. Everyone else is someone to worry about later if the opportunity arises.
Quick pick-up racing, I hunt down the guy that's going to sit beside me, corner after corner, looking over on his side view at me, etc. I don't care if I win public races, I'm there to have a good time. If I can race someone who will see me and not run me off the road when we are side by side, I don't care if it's for last place, I'm having fun.

Well, slow and steady wins the race! Unless of course you're racing someone who is fast and steady, then you're screwed :D
But yes I'm happier being reasonably quick and consistent than I would be being blindingly fast but not consistent. Obviously being blindingly fast and consistent would be ideal but I don't see that happening any time soon :)

I prefer a rather oversteering setup - not tail-happy but easy-to-switch-direction oversteer. I don't like to turn the wheel much. The tinyer the steering move the better.
On races it depends on my mood how good and cool-headed I am. Sometimes I fail and sometimes I fail more.

I prefer this too. Not so I'm constantly needing opposite lock, but just so that I'm not battling understeer at the limit. I prefer a car that turns in well and you can place easily.

You guy's "not tail-happy" oversteering setups are probably drift sets to me. Every RWD set on Inferno is a drift set for me. I like slight oversteer, I imagine your idea of slight oversteer is way different than my idea of it.
I never have been able to drive the GTT because it does nothing but drift. I don't know how people can drive some of the oversteery sets I've seen that others have complained about them understeering.

My driving style was summed up in my plate for long enough with a simple "Slow" to warn other drivers. Although I was rather good at Football (thanks to Bob's Road Going setup which let the back end snap out under hand-braking).
But I established that I am total arse at racing, I tend to go faster than my talent allows and understeer into a tree, or when trying to hold a power slide I'll either over cook it, spin around and crash into a tree, or turn off the power too quickly, spin around and crash into a tree.

Well driving style is a mix of technique and strategy.
For the technique I tend to use my own custom setups and not the ones found on SetupGrid or Inferno. This is because they might be awesome for hotlaps, but are quite limited for racing actions (passing, cornering side by side, etc..). Indeed, they are made to follow the line, and each disturbance results in an incredibly huge loss of speed compared to a setup built for digging your way to the up of the pack.
As others, I like setups that are "slidy" (understeering wheels-tires setups-suspensions but with oversteer at the entrance), and I prefer to rely on my footwork than my hands.
About the tactic, since I moslty race the XRG (god I love this car) against other XRG and XFGs, i tend to use the power of my car at the start to gain 3-5 places. Then, if I lose some during the race, it is okay. For passing, I tend to be very mean, given that I build my moves during about 3-4 corners (creating pressure on the guy, to make him fail epically), or I just seize an opportunity of there is one and rush into the inside at the beginning of the corner, to block the dude.

I have two strategies:
- Crash in T1, shift+p, esc, end last
- Drive the whole race in first position and crash/get stuck in a sandtrap in the last corner and end last
ultrataco
10th July 2008, 15:57
I just try to be consistent and not crash. I can usually finish in mid-pack (sometimes as high as 3rd or 4th) simply by not crashing. I am rarely fast enough to pass anyone unless they crash. I really need to work on my racecraft, though. Especially when people are trying to pass me. I tend to get nervous and let them through just to avoid crashing. I've tried to hold my position, but that doesn't usually end well. I tend to just hold the guy up and make him mad because he knows he's faster than me, but i'm driving like a slow idiot he can't pass and eventually there's contact or I make a mistake, and we both crash.

Nope, been here for 3+ years and sim racing in general (ICR2, NR2003), with a wheel since 1996. I know how to drive....
I just prefer a setup that you do turn the wheel to steer. All these sets everyone uses, you don't touch the wheel at all. In fact, I am countersteering constantly only applying very little steering at the very initial turn-in point to get started. Then it's countersteer around the corner, or VERY little throttle causing very slow laptimes.
Steer to turn FTW. I never see IRL race footage where the driver holds his steering wheel perfectly straight for 98% of the lap. IMO, this is where LFS is wrong, with the ability for people to corner and run blistering laptimes with nearly 0 steering input. It also confuses me why so many like the FF and 900 wheel rotation of DFP/G25 when they only steer with 2 degrees of the wheel rotation
I don't know how other current sims are (GTR, rFactor....) as I went from NR2003 to LFS.

Not so sure, with high speed the turningcircle becomes really big so required angle of "steering" becomes very small. Really sticky (slick) tires combined with high speeds don't require many degrees of steering or you're breaking traction, for example drive a motorcycle at high speed and see how little you'll be "steering", a car is similair. (except that you can't really fall off so you can actually get away with more "steering" all the time, eg. understeer.)
Or with less traction, rear wheel drive and power to equal or overcome traction you just need to get the car rotating around it's vertical axis (maybe those few degrees of steering or a bit more to get it turning) then your wheel will be mostly straight again and your right foot will do the rest to power through the turn if you get it right. (In an in slow, out fast kind of way.)
Also may I suggest you go race the LX6, RAC, etc. and you'll be using every last degree of rotation your steeringwheel has to offer a lot of the time. Even the fast guys need full lock from time to time in their LX6's, and that's why it's the best. :guitarist

As said before i tend to be gentle and caring with the tyres and the engine (no over revving)
I try to be consistent and not ultra fast, having a cool head in most cases -which is many times hard!-
I like to steer with my feet mostly although i can see what mrodgers is saying and i think he is right.

This also happens in Initial D where Takumi versus the EG6 in the Gumtape Deathmatch
Takumi realises that to turn the wheel less he has to enter the corner faster..
oh and i forgot to mention in my first post.

Well, I always try to be conservative, not ramming others off the track or landing myself on some piece that isn't grey. How I go exactly at it depends on the other drivers. But mostly it is avoiding T1 carmageddon, or when I feel i'm up to it just taking my rightfull place. When wanting to overtake someone, I try to make 'm as nervous as possible to provoke a mistake. Meaning I try to be a mirror filling adversarie wandering of to some dead corners of their visibility just to add to the tension :)

I push hard - VERY hard (somehow I still do well in cars like the FXO though even though I cook the tyres), and I like to have my car over the edge so that I can put it where I want it
i try to keep to the theory as much i can but i havent quite mastered it yet so id say im either slightly over cautious and therefore slow, or slightly too aggressive and slow because i either start a slide or mess up the line.
people often think im a bad driver cause i brake too early yet i often seem to pull away from them over the entire lap.
