WARNING : THIS IS A TEST

Hello Racers.

Here is a new Test Patch, Y32. It is compatible with Y30 / Y31.

You cannot connect to versions older than Y30!

You cannot upload hotlaps until Z goes official - hopefully tomorrow!

You need to unlock again and I've made sure everyone has two unlocks available

THINGS TO TEST :

Included Bulgarian training lessons
Slightly brighter red is now used for shift lights
FIX : Auto saved first time intro replay was obsolete
FIX : An issue in the unlocked status detection system
FIX : Some in-game text was displayed in car selection screen
FIX : Z clipping problem when looking sideways in XFG with FOV @ 90
FIX : Message spamming if unlock level insufficient for cars in grid
FIX : In some rare cases SHIFT+U mode did not move with an arrow key
FIX : It was possible to join a race with same name as an AI driver
FIX : SHIFT+U mode view position moved on entering player options
FIX : It was possible to partially enter pits from SHIFT+U mode

NOTE - XFR / XRR MIRROR SKIN MAPPINGS :

The XFR and XRR have new mirrors and the old mappings could not be used. An updated CMX Viewer is available in the Test Patch forum section.

INCREASED FRAME RATES :

By using the same Hardware Vertex Shading system as the car body, the subobjects (steering wheel, gearstick, brakes, mudguards, etc) now make better use of your graphics card, saving CPU time and increasing the frame rate on most computers. Those that do not experience much frame rate increase should find it is smoother and more consistent. There are small graphical improvements as a side effect of this change. You should find that the pit-out glitch is reduced as well.

REPLAY CONTROLS :

Multiplayer replays now have the same interface as single player replays.
They loop and the Escape Menu is available while watching.
Also, replay controls have been added. A timeline is visible when you move the mouse.
You can click anywhere on the timeline and the replay will go back or forward to that point.

Some new keys have been added :

1) Single frame step : ',' or '.' (SHIFT + ',' or '.' = one second step)
2) SPACE to pause / unpause during a replay (same as P)
3) ESCAPE to break out of fast forwarding
4) SHIFT + F now has 3 states if you are in a replay (the 3rd state hides everything including all messages and replay controls)

DEMO LICENSE SYSTEM :

User name and password are now required to go online in DEMO.
DEMO / S1 / S2 all appear in the same List of Hosts.

NOTE to DEMO users :

- You will need to set a GAME password at www.lfs.net to go online
- Log in and click on "account details" to set your GAME password
- You will see all compatible demo hosts and demo compatible S1 / S2 hosts

NOTE to S1 users :

- You will see all S1 and S1 compatible S2 hosts in the list of hosts

NOTE to HOSTS :

- Hosts in S2 mode - no difference, compatible, all S2 Y30 users can join
- Hosts in Demo or S1 mode - all S2 Y30 users and Demo / S1 Y30 users will be able to see your host

Windows XP : East Asian Language Support / Font Installation

LFS does not support double byte characters with Windows 98 / ME. Windows XP and Vista should work well but you may need to install fonts.

If you have Windows XP and currently cannot see the East Asian translations, here's how to set up your computer so it works.
See the attachment - in Control Panel click on "Regional and Language Options" then under the "Languages" tab select "Install files for East Asian Languages".
Windows will probably ask you to get your XP CD and the fonts will be installed from it.

This is important even if you do not use Chinese, Japanese or Korean translations so you can see East Asian text and player names correctly when you are online.

Were there extra screens added after the exit screen? I used to be able to click through all of them and the game would exit, now I kept clicking and the game wouldn't exit. I had to press a button on the keyboard to exit. Is there a way to disable all those screens at the end?

I think you can disable the exit screen in the options

ah, no, I'm just using ALT+F4 everytime :D

I think thats already been mentioned and it will be left as it is. The 'pause' has been removed from the car selections screen however :thumb:

It is something like a bug but not really... It is possible an option to disable auto handbrake when stop? I has a real handbrake set in an analog axis and i can't to leave it if I am stopped

Sorry if it is offtopic

Hi All,
I am getting an error when trying to connect to my host, was getting this with Y30 & Y31 also and thought it was an issue here but all my other servers work OK and are Y24 hosts.
60539 I can connect locally via network fine but not throught Listing Page as I can usually.
If this is a local issue I am sorry for posting, can someone try to connect to [AKM] Racing UK Y32 and report back if you have the same issue. Can also connect to other Y32 Servers fine as just been on (FM) Oval Starters.

Thanks for your development Scawen and I keep sending friends who see this running here who show interest in racing to your website.

Will be in Z fixed the bug when you pause the game and go to garage, the PAUSE text is still there? As Fire-Fly said, it was easiest and perfectly safe to remove it from the car selection screen. When I removed it from the garage there were some side effects and it seemed easiest to do it the safe way.

I could not see any real problem with having "paused" in the pits screen. I think this may have some beneficial side effects like you could see the "Race is restarting" countdown as well. Though I have not actually tested that...

It did look very bad in the car selection screen so that definite bug is gone.

I have not yet checked in the code but I have a feeling your server is not receiving UDP packets. Have you correctly set your router to forward UDP packets to the correct computer on your LAN? It's just a hunch but clearly the TCP packets are getting through. Just wondering about UDP...

You were spot on it was UDP packets as added extra TCP ports when I added Y30 but missed adding UDP. Nice one and thanks again.

Thanks for Y32

but please Scawen, where do we post about improving the race speedo dials that now appear in the UFR for example where it is impossible to see the rev limit dial without ruining the simulation experience by putting virtual dials on the screen as the real life one does not have any decent contrast?

I posted in the Y31 thread but you closed without commenting

Great job Scawen!
I've never visited the lfsforums as much as the past few weeks, gotta love reading these test patch forum threads when they're still fresh.
I guess i'll stick around on this forum for a while from now on.
Now it's time for me to test this patch, and buy an S2 license tomorrow.

Keep on rocking!

Brighter? You might as well have some fireworks, an explosion in the fuel tank and fifty million strobe lights.

I always wonder why people want such massive bright lights. You don't really need a light. Just look at the redline

Could it be still brighter? Similar to the red light colour in BF1. I feel that old one is easier to spot, that orange kind of colour at least looks brighter. :scratchchWell, I guess I should have said redder rather than brighter. It now has red to maximum and the green a bit reduced so it is less orange, and now the same colour as the red LED lights of the gear indicator.

I think this is a bit easier to see in your peripheral vision, there was something a bit washed out about the orange, though I'm not certain it achieved all that Dru wanted. It is still not popping out at you, to say the least.

Although the red channel of the shift lights are now at maximum, the whole texture is toned down by the colour Eric chose for the dash texture, so it is duller than on some other cars.

One thing I can tell you when I drove the real FBM, as I went down the straight at Bruntingthorpe, I could hardly see the red LED gear indicator at all. That was quite inconvenient as I wanted to know what gear I was in. Being a learner I did not always know. On the other hand I could clearly see the LCD display although it was small even in reality. Well that's not so relevant when we are talking about a car with a roof, but anyway red LEDs aren't THAT bright in the day time. I toned down the BF1 dash a little today as it seemed to be burning red holes in my retinas. It's still bright but won't damage your eyes like looking at someone using a mig welder.

i'm 75% ready for racing on manual/sequential shift if i just hear the engine... the remaining 24% is filled by looking at the redline :scratchch and the shift light adds the last % if i happen to forget to shift :really: i'm ok with it the way it's always been

Kdovi
2nd July 2008, 00:07
As mentioned by Boris already, it's completely unrealistic to shift with help of the shift light anyway

The perfect shift light is unrealistic alltogether, i wouldn't mind if it was removed from the sim. There are no shift lights in real life that vary on your setup, they basically just switch ON when they reach certain RPM, but in LFS it actually sugests you when is the perfect time to change gear, depending on your setup. If i'm wrong, someone could correct me, if i'm right, it would be a nice thing to be removed and make like in real racing cars...

Maybe changing the placement of shift light would help? Anyway after replacing the 'einstein of torque' type of shift light by rpm shift light it will become just a place where you look 1 second before it lights up, to change gear with more precisson - IMHO.

Bug on purpose?:

Animation of switching hands while turning the wheel has changed?
Now it is no more realistic. You catch the wheel at 12 o'clock, not at 3 or 4.
It looks like woman style of turning, as in some pre S1 versions, with woman driver model.

Hi Scawen,

Yes it is a little better but to me it is still either in the wrong position and/or the contrast is wrong.

I've done a quick mock up... hope you can see it, the reason is - i don't understand why the brightness of Y24 patch can not be mirrored in Y32 - even against the weird blue bezel.

The pictures i have in order is:

PAtch Y32 - dull red light under gear selection which is still not clear.

PAtch Y24 - bright light on black background clearly inditiable by periferal vision as there is nothing with the same colour around it.

My proposal - Have it on the top of the Speedo display, similar to the PL button. This way even though its still on the blue bezel it is in a position which will be identifiable by periferal vision.

BTW i've just copied and pasted the light from the PAtch Y24 into it.

Again, sorry for being silly, but why is the light in patch Y30/32 not able to be as bright as in Y24? even with the different colour bezel - it is still clearly brighter?

Cheers and regards,

Dru.

On a PI System 2 dash, the two LEDS on the right of the LCD are the warning lights - alarm and overrev. Most people use the overrev as a shift light. The PI system can also drive an external LED for each of those, so you can have an LED in your line of sight, and on the dash itself.

I know this because I've just bought a Dallara with a PI system 2 dash (and I hate the PI software!).

I can take a photo of the dash at some point if people want to make a hires texture of it.

every time i had to reunlock lfs after installing a patch it defaulted back to not loading a track at startup
shouldnt it be able to remember my settings before it locked itself to demo?

Hi,
I was testing Y32 just on my server when a new guest joined and left the pits in XRR. I pulled into the pitlane shortly after and thought I would have a nose at his car while waiting. This is what I saw 60580 which to me don't look right.

Just been back and as a spectator the car looks fine in spectator mode.

Someone please join [AKM] Racing UK Y32 Server in XRR within next 25 mins as going to bed. Too late off bed.

I think you're out of video memory there bud, and the textures can't be rendered.

Anyway, about the shift light, a nicer idea (not for this patch though) would be to make the RPM bar flash quickly when you hit the shift point.

Too late off bed.Sometimes happens... same like with skin. Did skin load? Next time go to spectate, or if you were, join race... and textures + skin should load. Worked for me, but still it's bad that it happens.

I got a error if opening lfs after installing x32 patch
[edit]now lfs opened without a error

Scawen
2nd July 2008, 08:48
not really an issue but more of a constant annoyance:
every time i had to reunlock lfs after installing a patch it defaulted back to not loading a track at startup
shouldnt it be able to remember my settings before it locked itself to demo?Well that doesn't happen very often. It's just that when you unlock, it stops loading the track at startup, which is what most people would want so LFS loads quickly. I've just been making the unlocks vanish for various reasons in these final test patches.

I got a error if opening lfs after installing x32 patch
[edit]now lfs opened without a errorWhen you get a crash report like that, please click the blue text there for more info. Then it will tell you the crash address and I can try to find out what the problem is.

Scawen: With the XRR when I look left/right I get a small triangle appear as the view gets past about 50%.

Looks like fibreglass sort of texture.

This is on my Laptop with an ATI HD2600 gfx card

I will check in the other cars if I get a chance later

....Whats with the name or something on left, is that an insim? That was Team Speak Overlay.

I've noticed this bug ever since W patch folks. I only had a 256MB card then, so maybe, it was outta memory. Just pit and rejoin and the dds texture files reload somehow. Spectating to other players sometimes fixes it to. Once I had to hold TAB for 20 seconds and go disco mode. :color:

Scawen: With the XRR when I look left/right I get a small triangle appear as the view gets past about 50%.That kind of thing depends on the FOV you use. It's probably the side of the seat, and the part of the seat even nearer to you got Z-clipped.

AndroidXP
2nd July 2008, 09:16
Is it easy to reduce the minimum Z-clipping distance? Because if so, that would fix the ugly clipping of both head guards and single seater interiors.

Scawen
2nd July 2008, 09:20
It's easy to change the Z-clipping distance but it has consequences - Z buffer resolution is decreased.

AndroidXP
2nd July 2008, 09:22
Ah, so that would mean more overlapping in the distance, bummer :(

Someone please join [AKM] Racing UK Y32 Server in XRR within next 25 mins as going to bed. Too late off bed.Don't worry, you are not out of graphics memory.

That is the pit-out glitch reduction system. That would have been the first person to drive an XRR since you joined the host. So it would have avoided loading his textures while you were driving, to stop you getting big glitches and spinning off into a wall.

If you had stopped anywhere else on the track, or the race restarted, or you joined the spectators, his textures would have been loaded up. However, his textures were not loaded because you were in a pit stop. A pit stop is the only time when you car can be stopped but texture loading is still suppressed.

So... not really a bug, and not worth changing today as it would be a little complicated and could have some side effects. LFS just doesn't have any code to decide that you are in a pit stop but aren't really in your car so would not mind about some small glitches. Sounds easy enough and I'm sure it is but it's too big a change to do on Patch Day.

Were there extra screens added after the exit screen? I used to be able to click through all of them and the game would exit, now I kept clicking and the game wouldn't exit. I had to press a button on the keyboard to exit. Is there a way to disable all those screens at the end?Always been that way. It's like that when you are in demo mode (locked). Y32 is locked so when you exited, you were still in Demo mode, so you saw the demo exit screens. Unlock to S2 and they wont display.

please, fix the problem with the 5th gear (XFR). sometimes the 5th gear doesn't work. and i'm not the only one with that problem. sometimes we have to use the shifter between 2 - 5 times to change from gear 4 to 5.I can't seem to reproduce this. Could it be something to do with your setup? Like gear ratios or something? I've done a few laps with default setup and it changed gear every time.

Happens sometimes to me too , but i cant reproduce it when i want .I have problems with 1. to 2. gear , i shift, but just the revs get lower ... (Tested with automatic clutch , mouse and default setup, XFR)

pasibrzuch
2nd July 2008, 10:15
Once I had problems with Formula V8 changing gears from 4 to 5, and maybe 5 to 6. It was caused by intake restriction (20-30% maybe) I believe.
Had to try several times or throttle lift manualy. Can't try it now at work.

Byku
2nd July 2008, 10:16
Are You using some kind of tweaker?

AndroidXP
2nd July 2008, 10:18
I think there was a problem some time ago with the sequential gearbox, but that was in the FOX or FO8. If you were in a high gear (+speed), had certain gear ratios and had headwind, you couldn't change gear. IIRC this was because the ignition did cut when you pressed the shift button, but the headwind somehow caused the transmission to be loaded (car slows down faster than flywheel?) which prevented the shift. It would then shift at some point once you slowed down enough.

Again, sorry for being silly, but why is the light in patch Y30/32 not able to be as bright as in Y24? even with the different colour bezel - it is still clearly brighter?I've had a look into it and the reason I gave previously was wrong. The actual reason why the lights are dimmer is because of the overlay texture Eric used to cover the gauges. The texture with holes in it where the lights are, those holes are not perfectly clear, they have some deliberate lack of transparency.

Anyway I've made the lights a tiny bit brighter by giving them a tiny bit of saturation (in RGB terms, on the red light, the R part stayed at maximum, but I've added a tiny bit of G and B to it).

That's all I can do for now.

Only one question about the future of LFS:

Today Live for Speed S2 Alpha Z is going to released!

But how does it continue? Live for Speed S2 Beta A or Live for Speed S3 Beta A

In case of LFS S3 Beta, do we have to pay for the next but one patch?

feat
2nd July 2008, 10:40
E : Woops, wrong answer.

Limited - In my opinion it wont be S3 yet, but couple Z patches, then will be a little break and then will come S3, because Dev's need some work to do i guess.
Well, if we need to pay from Demo to S1, From S1 to S2, then im 99.(9)% sure that this will pay too. :/

pasibrzuch
2nd July 2008, 10:40
No tweak. Just deafault or race_s setup with restriction. Wind was probably on. Your explanation, Android, seems right. So gearbox kick should be stronger, or ignition cut longer?

Scawen
2nd July 2008, 10:50
I won't be doing any more physics changes. Actually I am finished now unless there are any serious bugs that come up today while we get everything ready.

It'll just be, the ignition cut isn't perfect (they are tricky to set up in real life as well) and if you are driving into a headwind you'd better release the throttle a fraction while changing gear. Anyway winds are more predictable now so if you take a look at the flags and wind turbines you'll have a quite good idea where the wind is coming from.

It's quite impossible to make changes to something like that now without danger of side effects.

AndroidXP
2nd July 2008, 10:50
@pasibrzuch: The transmission would need to be less sensitive to load. But it's hard to balance that, otherwise you could easily bugger up other cars, for example making the FBM too easy to shift or similar.

word.
2nd July 2008, 10:53
Since we are all talking about shift lights, I think the RPM LEDs should have a smaller range to them.

For example, in the new FOX dashboard the first LED comes on at 5000rpm. The power band doesn't even start until 6500rpm (red line is 7500). The result of this is that most of the LEDs stay on for the whole race and are useless, and you only have about 4 LEDs to use for predicting when to shift.

I already made a post in the Improvement Suggestion section, and attached a video of how the LEDs are setup in an F1 car (just an example) Does anyone else agree with me? http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=45014

Only one question about the future of LFS:

...You know what, off topic is not allowed in the test patch section, it just distracts me and wastes my time, and that of people who are reading in here.

It's not ok to post off topic in here, even if your post starts with the words off topic.

The only things I want to hear about now are serious problems that mean we cannot release Patch Z without a fix.

About shift lights and so on, please remember there is a future, LFS development does not end here. Patch Z is not perfect, and that is OK.

That question mark is the user name.

But there is no user name of a dedicated host.

If you want to see player names, type this into your host :

Then it displays the player names instead of user names.

Or if your user is in the administrators group, just turn off UAC and it will never bother you again.
