View Full Version : GP2 to replace F08 ?

gezmoor

As per title.

A little modding could easlily turn the F08 in to a GP2 clone.

Both V8, GP2 is 600bhp rather than 450 and 4ltr rather than 3ltr.

Apart from that they're both 6 speed, have no electronic aids etc

GP2 car specs: http://www.gp2series.com/en//website/2008gp2series/insidegp2/about-gp2/our-car/

A small change that might help bring the game a little more up to date? Thoughts?

With LFS-Tune, this is possibly very easy to achieve.

Why does it need to be 'up to date'? Is a F3000 clone not good enough? Which year of GP2 car would you prefer, and will you complain when they change the mirror design and LFS still uses the sidepod mounted mirrors...?

Just race. Everyone has the same beautifully handling car, so have fun. The 'age' of the car doesn't matter a jot.

the F08 COULD get a aero restyling, maybe a little less straight(wings etc just look so sharp lol)

Yeah, the body of the F08 is not really good looking to be honest, needs some update. No more housepower, only the design should be changed IMO.

Any real reason to take such a confrontational attitude?:really:

Firstly, I'm not complaining. I'm just opening up a discussion. There is a huge difference.
Secondly, I'm not suggesting a pedanticly exact replica, just a tweak which will make the F08 in to a generic GP2 car.
Thirdly and lastly, why does it matter? Well probably because to attract new purchasers you have to have a relatively modern looking product, (unless you're specifically aiming at the retro market). GP2 is current, it's even on mainstream TV, F3000 isn't, (and never was as far as I'm aware). Given that it's such a minor change to the specs of the car, I wouldn't have thought it would be such a big deal for the significant increase in saleability it would give LFS as a product.

Other than that I couldn't care less whether its a F3000 or GP2 clone, I'd enjoy driving either just as much. I'm just trying to give back a little to a game I enjoy by making a constructive suggestion.

I like the FO8's looks how it is :)

Reminds me of the <2000 F1 cars, which were the best shape imo!

FO8 is good how it is, there's Euroseries 3000 which uses F3000 machinery IRL. A GP2-style car would be nice, but there would be little difference. If we want a new slicks + wings single seater, either a ChampCar or IRL type thing would probably be more unique.

+1 leave it the way it is now.. and if they should change it, ALL skins currently made for the F08 are useless..

So overall, a -1 for the GP2 change from me :)

True, however it was purely because they were so similar that I thought of the swap. A bit of a case of something for nothing was what I was thinking. Won't really make any difference to people already playing the game, but might make a difference to whom it attracts.

I agree an american style Indy car would be interesting too.

WTF! The FO8 is the best looking car in LFS!

and its FO8 (letter O) not F08 (number 0)

And no the FO8 does not need changing. It is good how it is now.

The FO8 is the best looking SS car in LFS IMO. I think maybe a touch around the engine and read, but dont dare anything at the front. Even leave it how it is, i dont think it needs any touch at all. Other then the FZ5, its the best looking, sounding, feeling car in the game.

The age does matter, the last F3000 cars were much more attractive than the GP2 cars.

GP2 took over the F3000 TV slot :smileypul

F3000? To me its more like an Renault World Series car.

I think the boxy shape makes it look like a F3K. Besides, the engine is a 3 litre V8 as opposed to a 3.5 (?) V6.

F3000? To me its more like an Renault World Series car.

It has got a 3 litre V8, very similar in character to the Judd engine used in the last F3000 cars and the chassis looks just like the Lolas. The Renaults don't look the same and have a completely different engine.

IMHO... he is allways with this attitude... anyway, I think FO8 need a more modern look, like a gp2 car, it doesn´t matter the year of gp2 :D.

It is fine as it is.

for us people glowing up in the late 80's/ early 90's we are pretty used to single seaters with a more basic bodywork design, it's not "retro", just that for quite a long while racing car designs are not as fancy in nowadays, it's form over function, not form over style. I think it's good we have such a car, it's rather special. And it is a rather strange idea that people complain about the looks of a racing car....since racing cars are not designed to look good, when asthetics become a design goal then the purity of a racing car is lost, at least imo.

and about the OP stating we could make a GP2 clone out of the FO8.....I don't know how you are going to do that. the GP2 will have a different dimension, different suspension geometry, different engine and different bodywork, basically nothing can be carried over so it's a car starting from scratch. Unless you want a half arsed look alike..which I don't think is what most LFSers will look forward to, if we are getting a GP2 clone then it's going to be based on real GP2 parameters.

I like the FO8 as it is, it offers a great challenge and is very rewarding to master. Sure it isn't absolutely modern looking, but I think it looks better than most formula cars today.

The FO8 is a great car. The modern GP2 car shouldn't replace it. Maybe there should be all the classes of Formula Racing. Right from Karting to Formula One. But there is a significant number of Formulae cars to cater for everyone's needs.

Take the BF1 for example its quite a bit out dated. As of the 2008 season there is no traction control the BF1 still has it. I could type up all of the 2008 updates, but there would be no point. You can't expect the 3 developers of this game to cater for everyone's needs or wants.

You never know maybe in S3 they might release a GP2 car as well as maybe some real life tracks. But the thing you have to remember they have to get permission to use Real-life Circuits and Cars.

I think that there would be even less people driving it when it had 600 HP. It's fine as it is... No, it's not fine, it's great!

Not totally, What about the FOX people could argue that it should be a Formula 3 or Formula Renault?

This game ain't all about single seater racing. They have to cater for all of the community's needs in situations like this.

Mostly agree.

450hp is a bit low. Push it to 550hp which is about A1GP level and we get room for a 350-400hp FO6

Why would one car need to be replaced by another? What's wrong with just modifying whatever numbers need modified and then adding it as a new car?

I wouldn't want to lose the FO8, because it's an absolute beast. But I know a lot of people would like to see GP2 cars. So both = win. It's not like there's a limited number of cars allowed in the game :p

Tweaker
28th May 2008, 11:07
Just tried this recently....

Made the BF1 have 580 bhp (older GP2) by giving it an 11% intake restriction, and +88kg weight added to equal the 688kg weight (with driver). Turned traction control off, and tweaked the setup a little bit and the car is pretty much driveable, and lots of fun.

All you'd need to sort out is a bit of tire issues, and change the grooved tire texture to solid slicks and you almost have a GP2 car right there. Only other difference visually would be the engine cowl gills on the bodywork, and the sharpness of the nose really. :tilt:

Perhaps a crazy idea for a league? I would try, but LFS is dying on its' last drops with all these old cars, old generic racing, and handicap-modded grids to try and make something "new"... it just doesn't seem like it is worth the time. But making GP2 skins does :).

will be great to modify FO8 release a kind of mod, I can help with the skins, Who it more grip, the GP2 or the FO8, for my, try to drive the F08 sometimes its really hard

Absolutely right. What other single seater would you want?

Doesn't stop people asking for the Nords every five minutes though, does it? :scratchch

Anyway, I agree with the above. The FO8 is easily the most fun car there is - and unfortunately, one of the most underplayed. As for it's looks: I wouldn't expect a GP2-esqe car. The last thing the devs want to do is start copying real series: can you imagine the pressure then to emulate the huge numbers of championships out there? It would be nice to loose the boxiness though, agreed. Slope the nose slightly, so it doesn't protrude from the front wing maybe?

But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's that big an issue.

Oh, and the BF1 is a little outdated, but still great looking!

the FO8 is the best looking open wheel in LFS. It's clean shape makes it look better than the other. A bit like mid 1990's F1 cars.

The GP2 are ugly. They are made too look like the modern F1 cars which look even uglier. The modern F1 cars are crippled with stupid and ugly aero accessories. They looks stupid because the modern F1 regulation are much too restrictive and doesn't permit the engineer to make better design. So they need those external devices to correct the flaws.

The FO8 should stay as it is. If you want a GP2, ask for a new ugly car. No need to spoil the FO8.

We have a good range of openwheels. I'd only add a champcar like car, a bit heavier and longer than a Formula 1 but with a more powerful turbo (yet less efficient in the low revs) engine and steel brakes. F1 cars are fast but not much fun to race because passing is always difficult with those brakes.

I'd better see a whole endurance prototype package, starting from a tiny barquette such as the Norma M20 (http://www.infoscourse.org/2006_VdeV/2005_MagnyCours_NormaM20.jpg) or Osella (http://www.osella.it/index2.htm) with a motorbike or >2L engine. Then a LMP2 like car and 2 LMP1-like cars, one open, one closed (we don't need diesel engine though !) with slightly different physics. I'd see the closed one more aero efficient and faster in the long straight while the open one would be slightly lighter.

I know LFS feels like its dead, but i know there is a huge series of packages going to be released, IMO, another track or two + another car or two before the final release of S2. Then S3 will start to have ranges of cars.

We all know in the end, there will be Le Mans cars, more GT cars, at least 1 rally car, at least an oval car and a few others. The devs have tested cars and have said they have, including karts.

Thats what i think, keep tight, stay steady. I'm not making no judgments or car suggestions until S2 final is released.
