View Full Version : Revs dropping off...

Hi,
When trying to powerslide the XR GT in a large circle in 2nd gear around the car park, once I get sideways, it power sides for (I don't know..100 degrees say), then the revs just drop right off, and no amount of right foot will keep the wheels spinning. I've also noticed it happen occasionally when changing down on the track. (Using G25 BTW)
Is there something wrong with the physics or my understanding?
Are you sure you aren't just running out of fuel?

Well, the XRG isn't really a powerhouse...

Sounds like some diff trickery to me, try it with a locked diff and see if it still happens, assuming you're not using one already

This is default Race_S setup.
And the engine just slowly loses revs as the powerslide progress. As it runs out of steam and I straighten up, the revs build up again and it continues to accelerate normally in a straight line.
So this shouldn't happen then?

I'm not sure what controller your using, but would auto-clutch/auto gears have anything to do with it by chance? I honestly dont know. Lock your rear differential and see if that helps.

Auto clutch??! How dare you, sir! :)
Using a G25.
Maybe something's wrong. I can't get around BW better than 1:36:25 with this default setup. And when I've tried anything else it's been no better.
Even GTL can keep the wheels spinning - even though it's damn near impossible to hold it there for any time without spinning out.
Which is another point: I don't get any real violent snap back when the rear wheels start gripping again when the fronts aren't straight, as one would expect surely? It's all very sedate and progressive.
Replay or it didn't happen ! :D

I'm thinking that the car regained grip because it is pretty weak and your tires are warming up. I'm also thinking that the clutch might be slipping. Try doing a few clutch kicks when the revs start dropping or increasing the radius of your drift more or try downshifting.

Engine power in XR GT (140ps) isn’t enough to keep the tires spinning in 2nd gear (default set). (Unless they are overheated knobblys)
Weight transfer is what helps you start sliding… but as the speed decreases, loosing momentum, tires regain grip and bog down the engine…
Allso don’t forget that when you pass 90degrees of sliding, you have significant weight transfer to the back because the car starts facing the “wrong direction”.
That increases the grip generated by rear tires that are spinning against the direction of the car, reducing it’s speed.
Snap traction loss and regain is indeed missing from LFS’s tire physics but really that’s not what is missing from XR GT cause it’s supposed to be like that… an easy to handle underpowered FR with high profile tires…

Cool explanation, Kaynd. :thumbsup3
As for Jakg ('ran out of fuel') every thread needs a smart arse. And what do I expect from a fellow Brit! ;)
Thanks all...

Didn't I say that earlier, that the XRG simply lacks power?

have you tried pumpping the rear tyres to max pressure?:smileypul With Race_S, the car simply doesn't have enough HP to conteract the forces of attrition of the tyres.

You did. Congratulations! But until a consensus developed and Kaynd said all those clever things about weight transfer that really made him sound like he knew what he was talking about, I wasn't sure. :)

like he knew what he was talking about,
Im sure if it wwas bulltshit you would believe him, because it sounded "cool" or "professional"

I said those “clever things” so Mr Blobby can understand why this happens.
I wasn’t trying to sound cool or whatever… there is also a language barrier I am trying to overcome so usually when trying to explain such things, I risk making myself a fool by talking nonsense. :really:

That's because he does know what he is talking about. He explained to you exactly what's happening. The point, of course, is that the XRG isn't powerful enough, but that only comes in question at the latter part of your experience and as an explanation it wouldn't be a point-to-point answer to the rest of your description or your query regarding your understanding of the matter.

its called lack of torque and the rear tyres gripping up, nothing amazing. Driver skill can overcome this, i can drift fine with the XRG.
also please teach me to drift at 100 degrees, thats pretty impressive, and kinda impossible actually lol

I think he meant a 100° turn, not a 100° drift (which isn't impossible). Reading posts makes them a lot easier to understand ;)
