WARNING : THIS IS A TEST
Hello Racers.
Here is a new compatible test patch Y19.
REPLAY CONTROLS :
Multiplayer replays now have the same interface as single player replays.
They loop and the Escape Menu is available while watching.
Also, replay controls have been added. A timeline is visible when you move the mouse.
You can click anywhere on the timeline and the replay will go back or forward to that point.
Some new keys have been added :
1) Single frame step : ',' or '.' (SHIFT + ',' or '.' = one second step)
2) SPACE to pause / unpause during a replay (same as P)
3) ESCAPE to break out of fast forwarding
4) SHIFT + F now has 3 states if you are in a replay (the 3rd state hides everything including all messages and replay controls)
DEMO LICENSE SYSTEM :
User name and password are now required to go online in DEMO.
DEMO / S1 / S2 all appear in the same List of Hosts.
NOTE to DEMO users :
- You will need to set a GAME password at www.lfs.net to go online
- Log in and click on "account details" to set your GAME password
- You will not see older demo hosts (Y to Y16) in the list of hosts
- You will see new demo hosts and demo compatible S1 / S2 hosts
NOTE to S1 users :
- You will see all S1 and S1 compatible S2 hosts in the list of hosts
NOTE to HOSTS :
- Hosts in S2 mode - no difference, compatible, all S2 users can join
- Hosts in Demo or S1 mode - all S2 users (test patch or official)
and Demo / S1 test patch users will be able to see your host
- Official patch Demo and S1 users will not see your host

Windows XP : East Asian Language Support / Font Installation
LFS does not support double byte characters with Windows 98 / ME. Windows XP and Vista should work well but you may need to install fonts.
If you have Windows XP and currently cannot see the East Asian translations, here's how to set up your computer so it works.
See the attachment - in Control Panel click on "Regional and Language Options" then under the "Languages" tab select "Install files for East Asian Languages".
Windows will probably ask you to get your XP CD and the fonts will be installed from it.
This is important even if you do not use Chinese, Japanese or Korean translations so you can see East Asian text and player names correctly when you are online.

OMG! New menu looks amazing!!!
Tried out the replay controls, and... wow, long waited feature it was!
Many thanks Scawen!
I think the Live For Speed logo in main menu should be lowered a bit.

Beautiful, excellent! New menu looks awesome, replay controls are working very well. That will ease movie makers life a lot. :)
Maybe you could add buttons for fast forward and slow-forward :) (0,5x, 1x, 2x, 4x...) There's enough space for them.
Nice surprise, thank you!

Woo \o/ Very nice stuff! I have comments, however :D
Replays :
Escape menu and options now available during a multiplayer replay
- Nice, consistency with SP menu makes me smile :)
Replay controls & timeline visible when mouse moves during replay
- Awesome! Knowing the limitations of the current replay system, fantastic work :) One thing I would say is that a timer would be nice, in order to see how long is left in the fast-forward, less time wasted just watching it do its magic.
SP and MP replays now loop unless started by /mpr or /spr commands
- Nice.
External replay starting now works from replay screen or in replay
- Nice.
FIX : Hang if escape menu was open at the end of a non-looping SPR
- Good.
Interface :
Interface improvements including updated entry screen and options
- The intro screen has a picture of an XFR which is a pure hard-track car. The image of it jumping as if it were a rally car is slightly misleading. Overall, the new intro and menu look fantastic!
Hotlapping in demo version - user name is now stored in the replay
FIX : Code page of text when adding a new music track in channels
FIX : Info button in List of Hosts showed laps instead of hours
- Nice.
Misc :
New option /lytdir allows dedicated hosts to specify layout folder
Improved cfg.txt Music Dir option (specifies folder for ogg files)
All paths (including reversed configs) now included (in SMX folder)
FIX : Updated car load scripts FXR.lfs and XRR.lfs (now sequential)
FIX : Removed continual memory allocations in car shadow processing
FIX : Number of AI not correctly limited when using the /ai command

One problem: it seems you cannot view the connection list in replay mode anymore. It sometimes flashes on for a random amount of time, but I can't seem to find a pattern to it. Looks like you can get it to display as long as you don't move the mouse while fooling around with Shift+F, though that doesn't exactly help ;)

New menu is cool, but why is there a picture of a DoN rallymobile? (eg Slicked car jumping in the dirt?)
New replay system is great and all but there is one problem. The mouse-activity to bring up the timeline is a bad thing for Shift+U mode when people make their own camera movements. If you want to move the mouse in that mode, the timeline pops up, which interferes with movie making.
Perhaps a button like a carrot symbol [^] to hide/show the menu would be effective, or if spacebar would bring it up (more intuitive). Either way, the timeline gets in the way when using Shift+U.

The connection list is hidden every time the mouse moves. Maybe move the list up enough for it to be on top of the replay controls box all the time, and visible as it was y19.

Replay controls are a nice addition, however I think some kind of keyframe system is needed, as currently it "scrolls" all the way from the beginning every time you click somewhere. Keyframes could be included in the replays, or generated when the replay is viewed and stored temporarily in memory to allow fast scrolling backwards.
I think the timeline controls should also work while it is "scrolling", so you could move the target marker around and put it on pause too if the scrolling seems to take a very long time so it will pause when it reaches the point.

great work Scawen :thumb: im really happy to see some progress :)
maybe one more feature you could add for the replay timeline: showing the lap you'll be on if you're scrolling to another position on the timeline :scratchch

Fantastic work on replays!
On my Swiss keyboard however the >< keys are not doing anything, rewind is ; and , for small and large increments, forward not found yet.
great work.
few things i miss after testing:
- skip backwards skips through all replay. maybe possible to cache that or reverse simulate?
post #11 also about rewind from current position instead of beginning
- game exit now need to press ESC at very last screen instead of mouse click.
edit: i like that new G-meter :)

Just in case anyone missed it (I'm sure you didn't), the scrolling can be stopped/paused at any time (and the replay pauses too) by pressing the escape key. I agree with the idea though.

Yes, I agree. The current method is a great improvement over having no replay controls at all and certainly works in the typical public race, but a two-hour (or a 24h) replay might get painful to inspect for a specific lap or rewind. A keyframe stored each lap the leader passes the finish line would be excellent.

"FIX : Updated car load scripts FXR.lfs and XRR.lfs (now sequential)"
I hope it will make the popular FXR a bit faster. 15 out of 22 racers race the FXR at the famous CD1 server right now - and theyīd applaud you big times if you got this car within a reach of the other two GTRīs.
Sorry for being off-topic and you just ignore it. But I just hope you get my point here.
Honestly, I love your game and itīs good to see you always work on improvements.

Sorry but how should this make the FXR faster? It's just a script update, nothing on the car has changed.
Absolutely awesome changes! I could cry!! Race and league admins everywhere are singing your name, Scawen. It's true, I can hear them!!
The mouse appearing during hide-all Shift+U is definitely going to be an issue for moviemakers.. there's no way now to hide the mouse any more.
While you're dealing with the mouse, would it be possible to also make it completely screen-independent, so that rotating the camera in shift+U mode is free, not halted by the edge of the screen? Or is that a feature request? :shy: ::runs::

Well, it's only the beginning so there are gonna be some improvements, we'll have to be happy with these updates, there are amazing. But that image with the XFR I think is a bit exaggerated.

Good stuff. This is why I love fridays (well ...).
However, the "return" button of the escape menu says "end race". Perhaps it should say "end replay"?

Well,
I really like the replay improvement, but the "new" menu screen looks imho strange. It wouldnt be so bad if there wont be that black "border" up on the picture. Still like the old menu than this. Otherwise this game is going forward and forward and thats the point. Replay improvement is just THE right thing! Im looking forward for a next test patch, hope it will be out soon. :thumb:
Well done and thanks to devs!
EDIT: I can really imagine picture which is on the official lfs.net page. Imho it will suits better. And second thing is that the XFR has slick on gravel :)

Excellent. Thanks a lot Scawen. :)
I tried it first with my work PC (XP, 3GB ram, E2180, 945G integrated graphics) which has worked ok with replays before. FPS was about 0.1.
But it works great with my gaming PC. Now watching 1H race replays is fun.

One problem: it seems you cannot view the connection list in replay mode anymore. It sometimes flashes on for a random amount of time, but I can't seem to find a pattern to it. Looks like you can get it to display as long as you don't move the mouse while fooling around with Shift+F, though that doesn't exactly help ;)The pattern is : don't move the mouse for 2 seconds. Moving the mouse shows the timeline and removes the 2D HUD at the bottom of the screen.
New menu is cool, but why is there a picture of a DoN rallymobile? (eg Slicked car jumping in the dirt?)That screen shot was made in 2005. It just took me a while to get round to improving the menu. Anyway this is not expected to be the final menu image.
New replay system is great and all but there is one problem. The mouse-activity to bring up the timeline is a bad thing for Shift+U mode when people make their own camera movements. If you want to move the mouse in that mode, the timeline pops up, which interferes with movie making. That's why I've added the 3rd state to SHIFT+F, described in the first post. It's more convenient than before for movie making - the 3rd state removes all 2D display including all messages.
Replay controls are a nice addition, however I think some kind of keyframe system is needed, as currently it "scrolls" all the way from the beginning every time you click somewhere. Keyframes could be included in the replays, or generated when the replay is viewed and stored temporarily in memory to allow fast scrolling backwards.I know what you mean but it would be hard. Those key frames would be images of the entire LFS state - the multiplayer system, the race system, physics system. Like "game saves". It's something I'd like to do at some time because it would also enable single player replays to be trimmed. Well, it's not really hard but would take a few days that I don't really have at the moment. The structures that would need to be saved (e.g. a car) contain so many variables and I'd have to look at each one to see if it should go in a game save. LFS just hasn't been designed with this in mind up to now.
EDIT : Although, for MPRs an easier thing could in fact be done, than a perfect game state save suitable for an SPR, using something like an MPR header. In short I imagine that will be done at some point but not in Patch Z.
EDIT 2 : You have got me thinking... anyway, it's on my notes now but I don't know when it will be done as I do have quite a lot of urgent things to do.
I think the timeline controls should also work while it is "scrolling", so you could move the target marker around and put it on pause too if the scrolling seems to take a very long time so it will pause when it reaches the point.Press ESC at any time to stop the search in its current position.

I hope it will make the popular FXR a bit faster. 15 out of 22 racers race the FXR at the famous CD1 server right now - and theyīd applaud you big times if you got this car within a reach of the other two GTRīs.It doesn't affect physics, it only affects people who edited certain script files.
Absolutely awesome changes! I could cry!! Race and league admins everywhere are singing your name, Scawen. It's true, I can hear them!!
The mouse appearing during hide-all Shift+U is definitely going to be an issue for moviemakers.. there's no way now to hide the mouse any more.Just press SHIFT+F to get to the third state.

Whee a great patch with some great additions and beautiful new menu:thumb:
I got a small problem with the new replay options tho. When running an mpr and when i want to view the name list and ( on the old version you are able to switch players by just clicking on the "W" or "M" or what ever it is to instantly change the car ) the problem now is that every time i try to click on the W the time line pop's in and makes it impossible.
Should we all forget about this way to switch between cars or it is a bug? I can work with the car changing with TAB and SHIFT + TAB but on a endurance races where u need to swap with your mate how are we going to adress the swap request? :S I hope You understand what i meant :tilt:

3) SHIFT + F now has 3 states if you are in a replay (the 3rd state hides everything including all messages and replay controls)ok, but how do I check the SHIFT-F state via insim now? There is only one bit ISS_SHOW_2D available to report the SHIFT-F state.
And how do I change the SHIFT-F state with insim now? In the IS_SFP state flags packet there is only 0 = off and 1 = on defined.

OK, thanks for explaining why the connections list needs to be visible during a replay while the mouse is moving. I'll have a look at that.
In addition to the connections list, some of us like to change players using TAB and SHIFT+TAB looking at the race positions shown when the connetions list is off. When the time bar is on you can't see
the positions so although you can change using TAB you don't know who you are focusing as you can't see the name with the little arrow pointing to it.
Actually I don't find it very useful either to hide the F9-F12 graphs when the time bar pops in. Maybe it's just a thing of both things sharing the same location on the screen.
This new patch is great. It's not totally awesome yet as it has to "reload" from the beginning when you want to rewind, but it's very useful indeed :thumb:

And how do I change the SHIFT-F state with insim now? In the IS_SFP state flags packet there is only 0 = off and 1 = on defined.
regards
SoerenYou can only detect the old two modes. I did consider InSim and I thought, well, it's just the same as before, no change so no problem.
The 3rd state I consider to be just something extra, intended for making movies (for example so you can move the mouse to manually control a camera in SHIFT+U mode). I guess that if you use an external program to control the camera when making a movie, then you don't need to move the mouse over the LFS screen? And for a TV director system I guess there is no need to disable the appearance of the replay controls?
If there is a need to have this reported to and set by InSim then please explain the situation (or any other issues created by the user's ability to go back and forward).
Another lovely update...thanks.
The SPR replay takes much longer to get to a position then an MPR. Is it really just simulating all at high speed and AI takes that much more power? There is no AI in a SPR, only the starting point and then all driver inputs are stored. So an SPR must run through full physics to get to any point.
In the case on an MPR, it only needs to run in physics for the last second or so, because an MPR works (like multiplayer) by continual position updates. MPR fast forwarding is faster because it's just skipping through the packets and positioning the cars, not running physics.
Actually I don't find it very useful either to hide the F9-F12 graphs when the time bar pops in. Maybe it's just a thing of both things sharing the same location on the screen.Yes, it looks awful when 2D elements overlap and that's why those things vanish when the timeline appears. I haven't looked into it yet but I guess the connections list and the positions list could just be moved up when the replay controller appears. It's not nice having things jumping up and down though and can get complicated to keep things in control as there are so many 2D elements that can appear, so I don't suppose I'll be changing anything for the F9 to F12 menus / virtual speedo etc.

After a little more testing I found one problem.
Start a replay(I tried it with various Y18 MPR files).
Press Shift-U, set follow car to yes.
Press Space to hide the Shift-U controls.
Click on the timeline to fast forward to a place which isn't visible from the start.
The result is (at least here) that LFS doesn't display all textures in time or at all.

For some reason I lost my sky. On all tracks the sky is black. I'm doing some testing now to see if I can correct it myself.
I lost it too. :( Interesting thing is that in mirrors the sky is present.
I'm downloading fresh Y version, to check whether any mods caused that.
WinXP, Mobility Radeon 9000 - driver ver: 6.14.10.6525I assume you can see the sky in the mirrors because it is just a plain colour.

Someone I was online with had the same problem but after reconnecting with the server it was ok again. But for me nothing would accomplish that. I took the install from another computer and replaced all data exept the texture dirs and replay dirs and patched that. Now everything is fine.

I just noticed 2 things while trying the new patch :
the first thing i did when i started LFS Y19 was of course watching a replay (because of the new replay controls :)), so when i wanted to watch a MPR, LFS wants to connect to the internet to check and load skins and because it was the first start of a new patch the "window while connecting" option in multiplayer-menu was still set to "yes", so LFS switched to windowed mode even when loading the MPR, after finishing loading LFS switched back to fullscreen, i donīt know if it its a bug or a feature, but it was the first time i noticed it.
the other thing is, LFS crashes for me (exits to desktop) everytime i do this :
- go to multiplayer-menu from main-menu
- display list of hosts, wait for the list to finish loading
- donīt enter any host and click "back" button to go back to multiplayer-menu
- press "back" again in this menu
--> LFS crashes, but ONLY if i watched a MPR or SPR before these actions, if i go to the multiplayer-menu directly, everthing is fine
EDIT: LFS just crashed for me without watching a replay first...

sorry, no crash-adress, but i have visual-studio installed, so it starts as a debugger (but i donīt have any clue about debuggers and any information i can get from it). At first i thought it had soemthing to do with loading a replay first, but it crashed for me without loading a replay before too (As you can see in my edit). It seems to be important that you donīt enter any host, because it never crashed after entering a host and going back to main-menu after that. It never crashed when LFS has loaded the hostlist from cache, but it did crash after refreshing the host list and then exiting to main-menu.
Update: I found something in the Visual Studio Debugger :
its in german, so my rough translation :

Yes i have that too, and another thing with this bug... if you click the replay foward a few times to try to "refresh" the textures( because sometimes it works) , it automatically exits from follow car "yes" mode to "no" mode.
Another thing that i've noticed is that when im using custom view, sometimes the rotation view option doesn't work. The botton works fine, it just don't rotate at all. I resolved this by restarting lfs, but then i've restarted it a few times, and i got the same bug at least two more times., and the solution was always the same.
But i must say... overall this is great work from the lfs dev's.
Really good improvements, that would save alot of hours for moviemakers like myself and race marshalls/admins.

But I have one question. Since patch Y18, we have been able to use the skins online, right? (I have not tried online yet) But on LFSWorld, we still are not allowed put our skins there. Will we demo racers be able to do that now that we are allowed to use the low-res skins? Also, are the skins just for single player, or can they go online?

I don't know if this was server specific (usually theres a button) and no one on the server LTC is using Y19 apparently. Also excuse me if my technical mumbo jumbo is incorrect.
On joining the server it displays a InSim? welcome message, with rules etc and normally (pre Y19) a button to click OK which then removes the message.
I joined and found that, 1 there was no button displayed, and 2 I had no mouse cursor while the message is displayed. Clicking ESC to bring up the menu (it gave me mouse back) I could click Join and join fine but the message would remain on the screen with no way to remove it.
I need someone to confirm/help because I don't know what I'm talking about.
I tried rejoining the LTC server a few times but it doesn't display the welcome message anymore...
* I'm finding it hard to find a server which displays a message on load - CLC has one but I have mouse and can click the button (im sure CTRA had one but it doesn't show a message so can't test :))*

Is it possible for user to be able to change this speed?Fast forwarding a replay runs as fast as possible on one of your processor's cores. LFS isn't able to take advantage of multiple cores (yet?), so that's why you'll see less than 100% CPU load on multi-core processors.

I know what you mean but it would be hard.
Today i went to CLC to get a rather longer replay to mainly check the performance and stuff and i have noticed one thing: When watching shorter replays the yellow bar that indicates the position of where the game is supposed to FF is working as it should be. You click somewhere and it jumps to that exact point. But when i tried the about three hours long replay the yellow bar always just went to the end (or close to it) of the timeline and the FF speed was very slow. It wouldn't stop until i press esc. Dont know if you're already aware of this issue but i just wanted to mention it, just in case.
Regarding the performance, is there any update to be expected or is this related to the content from the quote above?
Stupid me i deleted to replay again but i guess in case for a reproducing it wouldn't be a problem to get a replay with a simular length soon.

Can you please fix the FOX back to what it used to be in X. Patch Y took the life out of it. Presumably to use to be the base of the FMB build. Now you've got the FBM, there's no reason to put the excitement back into the fox. It feels dead now. To prove that, you only have to compare driving it in patch Y, then drive it in patch x. They are radically different. Then it might start getting used again like it used to be. No one runs fox servers anymore, especially on aston club, which in redline racing 2 was always full.

Didn't know if I should post this here, but it's a problem in Y19 too so.. I'm gonna bring it up here. During a race, if you pull up the F12 menu and request some setup changes (like more negative camber in the pitstop - because you might have 1 of the suspension arms damaged and the middle layer of the tire is heating up the most) - as soon as you stop it fixes all the damage (even though the damage repair is set to NO!). Please fix this as BF1 races are almost impossible with losses of up to 20 seconds on fixing damage (and damage is picked up even on the straights, and obviously on realistic curbs).
So, if the damage repair is set to NO and we request some setup changes like pressure or camber, even wings - make it not fix everything and then do the setup adjustments. Please.

*I'm thinking someone is toying with me, but that could just be my paranoia*Has anyone else experienced problems with host InSim buttons? I watched someone joining a CTRA host and saw some buttons that seemed to work ok. In theory nothing has changed unless it's a replay. Maybe the mouse pointer can appear when moved and disappear when it doesn't move though...? I don't know if that affects anything (it should not).
Request: buttons for adjusting replay speed (0.5x, 0.25x, 0.125x and 2x, 4x etc.). Just the normal << and >> buttons will do.Just in case anyone doesn't know, F2 and F3 do slow down and speed up time (you don't need to press SHIFT).
Stupid me i deleted to replay again but i guess in case for a reproducing it wouldn't be a problem to get a replay with a simular length soon.If you (or anyone) could post a long replay that shows this bug, that would be helpful. If I can reproduce this in my debug version then it sounds like something that would be easy to fix.

Please.I understand the issue but it's not an easy enough change to be done for Patch Z. Apart from the reported bugs, I have some other urgent and important things to be done and tested before Z.
The way the cars set themselves up in LFS at the moment, relies on the car being in perfect condition. This is not logical in a real world sense but it's a limitation of the way it's programmed at the moment. I do expect that can be fixed in the future. I would expect that to be done around the time when wings could break off instead of bending, and lose aero, etc... general damage system improvements.

Strange.
Is it there something changed with graphics in Y19? Looks like Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering didn't works properly. AA enabled on X6, AF enabled on X16, but i see no effect in texture smoothing.
I don't think that it is a just strange feeling, but it is a bug.

BUG or anoying little thing!!!
Results after a race, can we PLEASE have the laps down the same weather its 1 or more laps that someone finished behind?
As it is now, IF someone finishes 1 lap behind they are registered as -1 lap, but if someone finishes 2 or more laps behind it is listed as +2 laps or +3 laps...
Can this please be changed to EITHER - laps OR + laps
The menus look just yummi, and for the multiplayer replay thingy, COOL, but have to say FINALLY :)...

ok i just had another session and the same stuff happend again. I cant choose a specific spot on the line but instead the yellow bar is going to the very end or close to it. I also checked if the same thing happens with a rather short replay (at the same server) but that was not the case. Im curious if the same happens when other people watch this replay. (ignore the content, just focus on the error of course ;) )
Oh and what i meant about that it wouldn't stop until i press ESC was that it would fast forward to the very end (where the yellow bar is) and not to the point where i have actually clicked to. I thought it might have been just a bug in the overlay (or whatever its called (sry)) and it would still stop there but thats not the case. At least as far as i have tested it. Also, i was wondering if an instant fast forward would be expectable at some point regardless the length of the replay which was why i have quoted you Scawen. That doesn't mean that im demanding something but im just curious (just in case there is a language barrier hidden somewhere ;) ) meh..here's the replay:

Yeah, I know this. There are also the v command to change view and the tab to change the car you are looking at and both have their buttons in the replay gui.
I'm just suggesting that it would be nice (better) if there was gui buttons (prolly << and >>) for adjusting the replay speed in the replay menu.

Haven't checked out the replay feature yet but I have a couple of comments:
a) I think the layout of the pages under the "Options" menu needs work. They're all a bit fussy at the moment and if you scroll through the pages things seem to pop up in random places on the screen.
b) I'm not keen on the buttons in the screen cornners. Don't like the way they are bordered by the actual screen edge, to me it makes it all look a bit unfinished. Also, I don't like the colours, I feel they're too garish, (especially the orange). Less saturated colours would look more sophisticated in my opinion.
Little things I know but they all add to the overall impression of a professional product. Not something that needs time now, but definitely before the final product.

I think the options screens are quite consistent, not *fully* consistent because each has its own special coding because of each one's different needs and purposes.
Sometimes it may seem random, for example "skins in memory" on the misc options page. But that's some spare space and there are skin related options on that page, so it's not really random. It would be quite a bad idea to make a special page for that info - which isn't the most vital info at all but is nice to know and is happily tucked away in the misc options screen. On the view menu there are a couple of things that appear on the right, but they are 100% related to what's on the left.
Anyway I have no real idea what you mean, I can only guess because you didn't give any examples. The options screens get a little rearrangement every now and then but I don't see any real problems with them at the moment.

I think the orange-red (cancel / back) buttons are designed to go with the logo.

Is it already suggested to add slow motion buttons to the replay bar? I just downloaded the new patch, tried it and it was the first thing that came to my mind.
And I'm not sure if I have edited background images, but the options menus could do without really. Makes a lot of stuff hard to read for me. I'm sorry if I don't have the original files, maybe the normal ones don't have this problem, but I can't remember :D

i need help and very quick
i go to go on lfs and it says cant load font please help me i got an event in an hour and half
I've been able to reproduce this on Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
If I do a fresh install of LFS version Y, it runs ok, if I then update it to Y19, I get this error.
All previous installs of LFS will update without any problems, (I've been able to update from Y and Y18 without any issues), but I've now done 3 fresh installs and updated them, and got the same error each time. The fresh install will run ok prior to the update being run.
Screenshot of the error attached. Note - the mouse isn't visable in the screenshot for some reason, but it is bound to the lfs box in the top left, I need to use 'Alt-TAB' to be able to close the error box which then closes LFS.

Are you sure the patch was installed correctly?
There is a file data\abc\lfs.abc in the patch and the file date is 8th May 2008 / 19:59.
If there is an old font file there, the new patch will not run, and would just show that error message.
Just check that folder, the file is there and dated as you say it should be.
Screenshot attached.
OK found it :)
Y18 and earlier, LFS will run fine whether you run it as Admin or not.
Y19, you need to run the LFS.exe as Admin or you get the 'font not found' error.
This is on Vista Ultimate 64 bit, I've not tested it on other Vista versions.
This also only applies to a fresh install and update. Older installs will update without any issues.

I've found that since Vista Sp1 (64 bit) I've had to run LFS as admin to get it to work. The same can be said for some other games as well, so I don't think it's got much to do with LFS.
Edit: Well (tested again), it seems I don't need to do that anymore. Heh, just adding to the confusion I guess...
Both the Ultimate and Home Premium versions I'm running, are updated to SP1.
In fact, the Home Premium version, is an SP1 install disk.

Never had any problems here with lfs on vista home premium 64 bits. Lfs is stable and frame-rate is very good. The thing that worries me about LFS on Vista from LFS is the auto updater. You know more about this than me because I don't have Vista, and I'm very happy to to have it... but in Vista's default mode it doesn't allow LFS to simply download and install an update. I know it comes up with dialogs and so on asking the user about running as an administrator and so on. I'm sure there is some logic behind it but it's not easy for new users to understand.
And then the programmer has to jump through hoops to get around this thing that makes something that should be easy, now become so hard, specially for users who don't know that much about computers. Some people I know who aren't very experienced with computers, don't like Vista because it is so annoying. I don't really understand what Microsoft were trying to achieve. I can only think they were trying to reduce computer security issues.
But it seems to me like trying to make a car safe by covering it in lead armour to avoid the sun's radiation, filling it with already inflated air bags in case you might have an accident and welding the doors shut in case someone might want to steal your mobile phone.

You may find this article intresting: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080411-vistas-uac-security-prompt-was-designed-to-annoy-you.html
I know you're a busy guy so I'll just quote the jist of the article.
UAC's real purpose is quite simple: it's meant to trip whenever a routine attempts to elevate security privileges, and get in your face. As we have reported before, this has two goals (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070501-microsoft-uac-approach-is-so-good-other-oses-should-follow-suit.html): a) it give users a chance to approve of the elevation in the off chance that something wrong is happening, and b) it encourages developers to design their software such that privilege elevations aren't needed in the first place. The latter is really the point of UAC, since users have absolutely zero control over the privilege requests their applications make (other than to chose not to install said apps).
UAC is just there to help you protect you and also help software developers (you) produce more secure software for your users. I'm not saying please change LFS to adapt to these new found standards, I'm just showing you why they were implemented if you didn't already know. I haven't had any issues on Vista so far, LFS runs like a champ :)
Anyways, I look forward to the next patch! You guys are doing an awesome job!

Just a case of various bits not lining up with other bits of graphic on the same page or inconsitancy of layout between pages, (predominantly stuff on the right hand side), which you can see if you scroll between pages. Stuff seems to move around. I think it would look neater if you had fixed positions on the pages for left and right columns of information so when you flick between pages you have consitant areas of information presentation and areas of background.
Corner buttons are the easiest to click. It's mostly about ease of use and clear distinctions. I didn't design most of the colours but I am quite happy with them. I think the orange-red (cancel / back) buttons are designed to go with the logo.
Fair point, but then you have other buttons within the menus, such as the various page buttons in the options menu, also for example the "interface" button. I just feel the corner buttons would look more integrated with the rest of the feel of the graphics if they looked like these other buttons but with the same colours as the logo, (if those are the colours you prefer).
On a completely different, (and more important issue), I just had this patch die on me whilst trying to adjust an interface colour.
I'm running Vista 32bit and this is the event log:
Faulting application LFS.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x482dd122, faulting module nvd3dum.dll, version 7.15.11.7516, time stamp 0x481c0c8f, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x002dc7ce, process id 0x810, application start time 0x01c8b9177b573179.
Followed by these logs:
A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (LFS.exe)
The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application
@ Mr _Drunk.. therein lies the problem.. because a software update is bound to require elevated permissions.. the changes to LFS are significant - a new LFS.exe for starters, plus more. My understanding is that there is no mechanism provided to s/ware developers to make the changes required to their own software without tripping this ridiculous UAC when it's enabled.
It's just not reasonable to blame s/ware developers for the fundamental security inadequacies of the OS.
Homeless_Drunk
18th May 2008, 22:13
I wasn't blaming anyone. I was just stating why UAC was implemented. I know it is ridiculous. I'm a computer tech and most of my clients only gripe about Vista is the annoying UAC prompts. They are pretty easy to disable so its not that big of a deal.
Everything is documented. Microsoft wouldn't release a silly thing like that and not tell anyone how to update their code to avoid annoyance. Here's the link, http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/6/a/56a0ed11-e073-42f9-932b-38acd478f46d/WindowsVistaUACDevReqs.doc
One thing I hope is that Microsoft can come up with a better solution for Windows 7. Vista is a great foundation for something much better so we can only look ahead and see what they have to offer next :)

I haven't dealt with UAC much, I've been using the Super-Admin account as my main account since the start  It just gives everything admin status, without prompting me every 2 bloody seconds. And it's no more prone to infection than with UAC on, I've yet to come across a malicious program that asks for permission to infect a PC

I don't really understand what Microsoft were trying to achieve.
i think something along the lines of what sudo does in linux
@ Mr _Drunk.. therein lies the problem.. because a software update is bound to require elevated permissions..
yes but tinkering with installed software is not something a normal user should be priviliged to do
not sure if it works in vista but if you give the user account rwx rights on the folder games are installed in it should not be a problem
It's just not reasonable to blame s/ware developers for the fundamental security inadequacies of the OS.
in this case it very much is
software that practically forces you to be logged in with root priviliges at all times is a security hole that is not the os developers fault

For me it works very well (Vista Ultimate x64) without running the LFS.exe as Administrator.
The first time I played on Multiplayer, the firewall showed up and I choose to not block LFS.exe anymore ....
so no problems for me on Vista everything works fine so far.
I like the new replay functions but the interface, the entry screen as well as the multiplayer screen have this new buttons but the rest!? As I said I like it but its so confusing, new buttons here - old buttons there, just my opinion ;)
In conclusion good work so far :)

Edit: After i have restarted LFS to see what happens then, the yellow bar is going to the very end again but now it is stopping where i have clicked to (or the yellow bar should be)...:scratchchOK, the bug turned out to be that if the MPR was of a race that you had joined after it had already started, the yellow line (replay destination) was shown in the wrong place when you tried to fast forward to any point.
For example if the race had already run for 3 minutes when you joined, then later when watching the replay, you clicked at the 1 minute point in your replay, it would try to draw the yellow bar at the 4 minute point (but was bounded to the end of the slider bar) although functionally it worked correctly and actually forwarded correctly to the clicked point.
The Y20 patch notes will have this line :
FIX : Replay destination was wrong in MPR of already started race
And I'm just reporting the fix here now because that one-liner is a bit short. I must keep the fix descriptions short! :)
How about "FIX : Timeline marked incorrect race time in incomplete replays"?
I'm just messing!! It's so difficult to cram clear information into short sentences.. it's an artform in itself! :)

I have a Q. Yesterday a few S2 users (me + 2 friends) was racing on S1 server and we decided to race on BL1R. We were all kicked from the server (JOOS error or sometning similar). Is this Y18 related?. It looked like LFS made us demo users and decided we cant race there
Maybe it is server related. Hope it can be replicated...

Ok this makes perfectly sense. I guess that the same thing (fix) should apply on replays which are beeing recorded in practice mode as well? Since i have tried shorter replays which i have created at the same server without having this "issue", longer replay's instead would be only viewable with this "bug".

Quirks:
When you press Escape while dragging the slider, you first get the menu, and when you return from the menu, the replay-rewinding starts. (I expected the drag to be canceled.)
When you move to the start of the replay, the screen is black. (I expected to see the first frame, or at least the "Paused" indicator.)Suggestions for buttons:
Fast-forward button to control the speed (left-click == F2; right-click == F3; wheel-click == reset speed to 1.0).
Button to move to the start of the next/previous lap (as measured on the leading car).

Scawen,
I noticed a couple of things in the Controls screen (FWIW):
1. In the Buttons 2 section you can set a button for triggering the rear view. It can be set, but when you press that button on track, nothing happens. I think that's expected because IIRC you removed the rear view, but then that setting should be removed too.
2. In the Axes/FF section, when you click on some control (like Steer) a help text appears at the bottom of the scren that reads "Select axis for : Steer (ESC - cancel / DEL - none)". But it doesn't say that you have to press Return to validate your choice. Since you have to do it only when setting an axis (not a button or a key), it might be cool to mention it.

Not true, on race cars it will show the rear mirror, on road cars it will actually show a rear view.

You simply click on "Steer" in the function list, then for example on "X-axis" in the list of available axes to the right.

Some problems:
- When you load a replay that goes OOS after some time and you move the timeline slider into the OOS section, LFS will show no error message and it looks like the game hangs (moving the timeline isn't possible anymore). Pressing Esc recovers LFS, but imo it should do that itself and show an error message.
- The < and > controls don't seem to work with my German keyboard layout. They are also both on the same key and you have to press shift to get the >. I think it would be better to just use the arrow keys because these are the keys I would expect to use in a game for replays controls - without the need to look them up in a manual.
Edit: In the garage screen when I select a default set and try to move one of the sliders I get a "cannot change default set"-message spamming.
(sorry if those points have already been posted, couldn't be bothered to read nearly 8 pages of "you are god"-messages)

About < and > ... as Shotglass says, they are the same keys as "less force" and "more force". On my keyboard "<" and ">" are the same as COMMA (,) and FULL STOP (.)
So... maybe it's just the documentation that needs changing? Is it in fact COMMA and FULL STOP on ALL keyboards?

Yes, but as long as you don't press return, you can change the same setting by using a different axis. It's only when you press return that your choice is "fixed" (and the help text at the bottom disappears). At least in my experience.

Bug Report:
.. or sort of.
When using the in-game menu to add AA/AF, and THEN try to fraps it, it fraps @ 10fps or less.
Put in-game AA/AF to zero, then via nVidia control panel add the AA/AF (to 8x/16x), and I can fraps @ 45fps...
Something's fishy, or just not quite optimized correctly.
Not that BIG a bug, maybe just me, but depending on the code itself, a quick look might work (or a quick look might just not BE possible :D)

I'm sure there is some logic behind it but it's not easy for new users to understand..
I can' t remember i had such problems, i will note any problems and report them next time the auto-updater has something to update.

At least since Patch Y you can't select the fuel load for AI drivers - they will do that for themselves. And fuel load is not part of the setup (although it is in the garage screen).
So the option "AI use player setup" should allow you to specify the setup used by AI but not the fuel load.
I can' t remember i had such problems, i will note any problems and report them next time the auto-updater has something to update. As far as I know, it's ok if you run LFS as an administrator or if you switch off the UAC. Is that what you do? My limited understanding is that many Vista users just run everything as administrator to avoid the various issues that can come up with software that has not been fully adapted to deal with Vista.

Quick work-around: If you want to have them use the same fuel load as you for their first stint, then set the number of laps for the race to as many as the amount of fuel you want to use permits then when the race starts, pause the game and set the laps to a bigger number with the /laps command.

I was able to reproduce something similar - if you go into the car selection screen then exit by pressing a key (e.g. X / ENTER / ESCAPE) inastead of clicking a button then you get a black background in the setup screen... and ALL screens, until you enter the car selection screen again and exit by clicking a button.

ok that works, but if i want a qualify for 30 munutes, the ais dont realod tank, they always start with 5(porcent), then they go to boxes and turn off engines.5% fuel is enough for the AI to run several laps in most any track/car combo. Because they are not human they don't make mistakes or progressively get faster, so there's no reason for them to qualify for hours on end.
I'm not sure I even understand the desire to have them run for longer. Don't you want a clear track for qualification? I think it would be nice if the AI staggered themselves a bit more so that they aren't all on the track at once, but I certainly don't see any reason someone would want them out there for more laps than is necessary.

Found a bug but it's intermittent. Hit escape in a paused replay, choose "end race" and LFS sometimes freezes/locks.I tried that in the debugger and amazingly got it first time. Or at least one version of it.
The reason in this case was because a guest was connecting so it wouldn't let me leave the race. And being paused that meant I could never leave. The fix is of course to allow that if it's a replay.
If this is the bug you found, then you would have still been looking at LFS with the "paused" button flashing, and a yellow "leave" button in the escape menu.
If this is the bug you found, then you would have still been looking at LFS with the "paused" button flashing, and a yellow "leave" button in the escape menu.
Very nearly the same, yep! In each of the cases I've been able to invoke the freeze, a new guest is connecting in the replay. :thumb:
The menu isn't quite as you describe, but that sounds like the difference between a live race and a replay ("end race" instead of "leave"). Otherwise I think we're both looking at the same bug :)
[edit] Actually, apart from the yellow "end race" button, bottom left, in mine the other clickable menu buttons have disappeared. Top left it still says "Replay Menu (loaded)".

2) pause it in any position
3) press SHIFT+U and set Follow car to Yes
4) move the replay slider to any position after the position it is, so move it to the right
Result: some textures will not show

It's a bit colourful for my taste. The reason for this is so that it doesn't jiggle around (with the standard font, every time a 1 appears, the text moves left or right). The 5x7 font (which was created for the LCD / LED dashboards) was the easiest way to do it. I think it could be done with 7-segment digital numbers as well but I'm not sure that would be any more consistent.
EDIT : Ah no, I remember now, if the digital font was used and the solid up arrow, down arrow and circle, then it would still jiggle, because the arrows and circle have different widths. The 5x7 font is the only way to guarantee no jiggling because all characters have exactly the same width.

For example, in the attachment, the grey bar is where I clicked, but the replay winds forward to where the yellow bar is, then instantly goes back to where I clicked first.

Increased maximum number of car shadows from 8 to 16Great! Is it possible to make option for 24 and 32? I'd like to have all cars with shadows. ( example where 16 isnt enough (http://www.czechlfs.net/submitted/reportpics/pco_soc/pco_z1_d4_01.jpg) )

Yes it would be good to have an option to set number of shadows

No, because of the way the shadows fit onto a shadow texture, 4 by 4, that cannot be done without significant changes and there is no time for that before Patch Z.
It does not compare with the other priority tasks I still have to do.
