ATI FTW :thumb:
Looking at the size of the companies, nVidia should win.
Intel GFX cards (if you can call them that) are fitted to over 50% of all PC's, so by volume they are (scarily) the "best" GFX card manufacturer.

Dajmin
23rd June 2008, 11:38
No, but she does use a lot of the stuff that I do. Or I guess in the case of EQ I use something she does. I don't want to go "hey look, I've got shadows on and it's at full detail and I'm still get 60fps!" while she's going "then how come mine is struggling at 15?" because that way lies an argument :)
We have a garden needing £300 of work done (/sob) and I'm about to start driving lessons then buy a car, and the 7900s are still more than enough for what we use the PC for 99% of the time. I keep looking at dual core CPUs and new gfx cards, but there are other things need sorted first. Unfortunately :)

Heh, here's my short history with different graphics cards:
Matrox G200 + Voodoo 2 16Mt (I think...)
Geforce 3 TI500
Geforce 7800GT
ATI hd 4870
I usually buy the latest and fastest GPU and then use it for about three years. Comes pretty close to 3,3 years as the first one was bought in '98. All cards have probably been well over 400€ except for the latest ATI card. The performance leap especially from voodoo2 to Geforce TI500 was quite noticeable :tilt:. As for the current card, investing 200€ more to get a 4870x2 or GTX280 didn't seem to pay off so I settled for one 4870, also being my first ati card. So at some point I might be looking at upgrading my gpu instead of doing full upgrade as I didn't invest into the latest card this time. First though I need to get a silent cooler for this one but I'm happy so far ;).

ATI Radeon 3870 X2 HD... or something. Good power, but I hate that I can't switch primary monitor when I have my TV connected. Every time I want to get up from my desk and start LFS on the TV, I have to manually switch primaries by turning them off one by one and extending the desktop once again with the TV first. Clone obviously won't work because my TV is 1920x1080 pixles and the small 22" monitor is 1680x1050. Also, the game only starts on the primary monitor, even in clone mode.

I got the GT from work for £49.97, and sold my GTX for £130 - In all the games I tried it in it was almost as fast (by about 1 or 2 FPS) as the GTX, and while I liked the vRAM I hate the HUGE size and noise so I swapped and got £80 in my back pocket.
The difference isn't as big as you'd think.

I just checked toms hardware, and you're right, in the sum of all benchmarks the GTX was maybe 3-5% faster, and the 9800GTX about 10-15%. Now I realize why Nvidia released the 9800GTX+, it's incredibly superior to the others. 9800GTX owners must be pissed since the release of the + version, I guess I lucked out having to wait.

For almost a year I was recommending the 9600GT's to everyone, because they perform very well, GDDR3, 256bit memory controller, allowing good resolutions and reasonably powerful shading. But now you can get a 9800GT for the same price, and also time has passed and I'm not 100% certain if AMD/ATI has improved their drivers, or how much. ATM because of history I'd still have to recommend the 9800GT, and for a few dollars more, ppl with a very large monitor, the 9800GTX+.

ATi Radeon X800 PRO VIVO 256mb AGP. It runs LFS with maxxed out graphics (albeit at 1024x768 75Hz 32-bit) at 50fps. That is fine for me ;). Only trouble is that it only does this as I overclocked it. This means it randomly overheats alot.

I certainly hope those of you who bought GX2 cards didn't get them for the purpose of running LFS... Those cards are for running high end DX9/DX10 first person shooters in extremely high resolutions with graphics maxed out, including AA.
(EDIT) lol Sorry I made a very long post, if you're bored go ahead and read, it's just my opinion, well kinda, on why I run what I'm running. On topic, Nvidia: BFG GeForce 9800GTX+ 1GB OC
Myself I had the choice to buy whatever I wanted. My tax guy made some huge mistakes last year, H&R Block caught on to it, and I got an extra $3,700 on top of my regular return this year. And since I've been very careful and living on a tight budget, and I've finished modding my mustang cobra, I was able to get whatever I wanted. I did the research, plus (im not willy wagging, but..) I really do know a lot about video cards and what is really needed, depending what kind of system ya have, and what size monitor you use, also if you plan to upgrade to a larger monitor, etc etc.
Anyways, I realized that one 9800GTX+ would be plenty for me, even for Crysis. The GTX+ version is incredibly superior to the regular GTX, not only at stock speeds, but you can overclock the hell out of the GTX+, that is, if the vendor you bought it from didn't already, most of them do, cause they're 55nm, whereas the regular GTX is 65nm, it's actually a huge difference, more than I ever thought possible.
So, I bought one, it ran every single game I own, and I own many, I'm always searching for specials/sales and so I have almost every FPS game ever released lol. Anyways, the only game it couldn't sustain 60fps+ with max graphics (oh,and I don't use AA in FPS, not necessary when you're running a high resolution. I'm running 1680x1050, on a 20" LCD, not a 22", so tighter, smaller pixels, only old games need AA forced on, and especially LFS, although it's not a FPS so nm that's off topic) sooo...as I was saying, the only game I coudln't run and sustain at least 60fps with graphics maxed was Crysis, of course. But, with everything on high, at my native resolution, already mentioned, and no AA, and 16xaf(I max AF on every game, period) it averaged around 40-50fps in wooded areas, beach areas, stuff like that. But near towns and stuff, it would struggle some and average around 25-35fps, 25fps being when there's a LOT going on, like the absolute worst situations. Which is actually quite good, but since the card was so cheap, and BFG has lifetime warrenties, and I liked it just, sooo much compared to other cards I've ever owned (Price vs performance best ever, with the 7600GT SC in 2nd), I couldn't help it, and I bought a second one, so now I can run anything maxed out, and I should be able to do so for a good 4 years. Two 9800GTX+'s in SLI, even if you don't overclock, are killer. I murder Crysis no problem. 60fps all the time, when nothing is going on I get amazing frame rates, and when in towns where all crazyness is happening, or say the snow level, it still stays around 60 fps, and I only paid, what, like $270, that's unbeatable. I didn't even consider a GTX 200 card, I'm not buying another video card, period, until Nvidia finally supports DirectX10.1, and therefor will support DX11, which will be a while, sadly, DX10.1 doesn't have better graphics, but the performance enhancements over regular DX10 is badass. Which is my only beef with Nvidia right now. ATI I love too, I'm not biased, but I'm tired of hearing about their driver problems. But I think I'll buy another ATI card one day, who knows, perhaps even my next upgrade. Other than my GPU, which absolutely has to be the best bang for buck right now, with the radeon 4850 right there with it, the Radeon 4870 is an absolute beast, my only issue was the price. The performance is good, but it's not superior enough to my GTX+ to justify the extra $110 at the time. AND, no way in hell will I attempt to run a Crossfire setup anytime soon, I hear nothing but absolute hell about it, while Nvidia is well proven and I know myself works flawlessly.
OMG LOL, I'm sorry I didn't mean to just write on and on like that, I lost track of time and I'm bored waiting for my girl to get home. Anyways, Nvidia :)

The GeForce 9800GTX cards are all 65nm. However Nvidia moved to 55nm and called them the 9800GTX+. These cards are far superior, much higher clock speeds, I mean, majorly higher clocks, less heat, less power, huge overhead for overclocking. The true reason for Nvidia going to the 55nm process with the 9800GTX+ was actually a test bed for the upcoming GTS 250. It's identical to the 9800GTX+ 1GB, except that they bumped the memory up to 1100, so 2200, versus the 9800GTX+ 2000mhz. Although virtually everyone who owns a 9800GTX+ has overclocked the memory to at least 2200 with ease, with very little tempurature change, these cards are kick ass at 55nm.

:really: You are the one that smells of Nvidia fanboyism. ATI was ridden with buggy drivers back about 2 years ago. Since then they have been flattened out and are as stable as nvidia's. (I have owned a 7600gt, 4870, and a gtx 260 core216 is on it's way, so don't call me a fanboy) Albeit, I prefer Nvidia's AA along with its control panel and folding power above ATI, but that doesn't make ATI worse.

I "personally" find their drivers OK and I have no problem navigating the CCC, I rarely even have to open it, right click on the tray tool icon tends to let me change what I need.
Since my Nvidia 6200 that this PC originally came with, having ripped it's guts out and replaced it the innards, I've gone through an ATi X800XL which was great and overclocked nicely. Then I had an ATi X1900XT which again, overclocked to 5% past the XTX speeds without a problem. Now I'm on my 2900HD running standard clock speeds and it all the games I play fine..
I've never had a failure from ATi but I'm thinking of getting the new Nvidia GTXsomething or other, simply because it's rated as better than ATi equivalent but I don't know/care. It's fine as it is and I'm not in a rush to change it. :)

Oh I see.
I thought you had a something similar to me: nVidia 8800 GTS, and a failing Corsair HX520 PSU which we figured out that was the culprit later. Anyway during trouble shooting we started lfs and although the fps counter showed 250+ everything looked more like 0 fps. Changed to other PSU-works flawlessly.
Sorry.
But, still, the fact that you pretty much insulted Bose, are 3 years behind with the knowledge of Ati drivers which you base around their low end GPU(atleast you seem so,)(if we had this convo 3 years ago, I'd call ati crap too, but when someone sorts their shit out, due credit is due), does demand an brain reinstall.

If you would've taken your time to post that.. you would have looked at my sig where it clearly says ''Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz.''
The performance is great, i can just play virtually every game on high(est) settings, 1680x1050 without any problems. It's comparable to the GTX280.
If you want even more power, you could look for the XFX GTX 260 XXX, or the XFX GTX 260 Black Edition. I don't see why this would be neccesary, as this thing has all the power you need imho.
However, if you've got a small screen, you won't even need this kind of power. the 4850 or 4870 or whatever you have now would be plenty. I don't see why you would want to buy a new videocard..

And that's your argument to conclude CCC and ATI drivers are crappy?
It's far more likely that the reasons are non-driver related. You said you switched from 9800GT from 3200HD. Did you use driver removal tool? Even if you did use it, are you sure you properly removed everything, many removal tools leave stuff. Perhaps LFS was printing the wrong numbers, did you try FRAPS, or some other game? Etc, etc... And besides, it's far more important what the card's performance was, than what one particular game printed out.
My dad has nVidia 6150 IGP and LFS is a lot choppier than on my 4870. Must be crappy nVidia drivers, right?

whatever, nvidia or ati, they're good at different things.
i.e i had an old gefore2 pro.. it was good as hell, tho it didnt work in all the games i had so.. bought an ati 9200le, it was good, for awhile... upgraded my comp, got an 7300gt, it was AWESOME.. upgraded again -> 7800GTX, and now im on a 8800GT..
my point is, we all go through different stages in life where we love one brand, then move on and gets the other brand.. all my cards have been awesome tbh, just that you need to upgrade after a while anyhow.
im guessing my next card will be an ATI nnnnx2 as i have always wanted one of those :) and it will kick the crap out of the card i have now. so tbh its not comparable..
fanboy this, fanboy that... its just bullshit anyway. we will NEVER think the same about all stuff that u can put in a computer ffs.. sure im not an ATI-lover.. but i would sure as hell want to try one of their newer cards.
EDIT: whats up with the poll? "nvidia, ati or integrated" ? wtf.. if i have an integrated ati/nvidia, how do i do then? :/ should be like "intel, nvidia, ati etc etc etc etc"

Just had to 'upgrade' my 'puter since it stopped working.
I am a Shuttle addict - I can't stand big tower units. So I've bought myself an SX58H7 Shuttle, with a Core i7 920 CPU. Due to money constraints it's still got my old Ati X850XTPE in it, but next week that is due to be replaced with a 4850 1GB DDR5 Vapor-X card. That should bump up Crysis (demo) from 17fps to something a bit better :)
Am loving the speeds - Ati Traytool is claiming 300fps in Half Life 2 (yes, I still play that occasionally), and I dread to think what LFS would be able to acheive if I didn't Vsync it).
Just want to find something great to play on it graphics-wise. Have ordered Crysis (only installed the demo yesterday, and loving it). Was thinking Far Cry 2 might look nice, and I can't wait for Operation Flashpoint...
But now I am poor, and only have soup and pasta to eat :D

The sound doesnt bother me, when gaming i dont hear it actually.
Auto on idle says the fan runs at 40%, while in-game i think it's at around 50-60%.
I can't really ever hear the fan on auto, while if i set on 70 or 80% manually, it sounds like a vacume. PLUS i don't have to do the effort to keep on manually changing it. That's why i think auto is better. I also think Auto-fan just likes to keep the card at around 80° at full load. Never goes over that temp.
The GTX 260 is made to run hot though. :)
@Bose, my GPU's clock drops to 300 when idle, so there could be some truth in shadow's post.

Little question: Temperature-wise, i would like to know how these temperatures of my XFX GTX 260 216 are. It idles at around 56º, full-load (Crysis) 76º-80º. This is at the stock clocks (621/1350/2000) Do these temperatures sound reasonable, and not harmfull for the core? I'm worried about it running too hot.
My Sparkle GTX 260 core 216 w/ 1792mb idles at 36-40 degrees at 300/600/100, when the clocks kick in (576/1242/1100) for games it's gotten up to 80 degrees C and the fan runs at 40% all the time as I haven't yet been able to work out how to change the fan profile in rivatuner.
That seems really low, I can't even seem to do that. My lowest underclock is 500/750...
It's probably power phases, though my old 8800GTS 320mb never underclocked itself, it always sat at 570/1242/900 no matter what it was doing, and its idle temps were woeful IMO, with the fan set to auto in rivatuner it idled at about 58 degrees C and wouldn't go lower than 48 degrees, no matter how hard I tried, an 8 degree night didn't make it go lower either, even with all the fans on 100%. It'd go up to 70 degrees easily though, and once I got it up into the 90's.

Idle #1=78 degrees with 20% fan
Idle #2=68 degrees with 50% fan
Both run 102~ on full power with 100% fan.
Monday my HAF932 will arrive, I'll hope to get better temps by then. :)
Got my new case. It's HUGE. But I am so happy with it. Idle temp of CPU is same. Still have to put it under load. The GFX cards now run 55 degrees with 50% fan. So that's a (whopping) 13 degrees difference! I'll go test and put them under load now. :)
edit-94 degrees with 100% fan after 3 minutes :)
The poll's a little flawed, as I have both an ATI RADEON 9550 and a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX 512 in my computers.

Good to hear  I'm also doing some shopping for a new GFX card.. looking for something which may just be able to handle Arma II. I've never played the previous games before and I'd not seen anything about the new Operation Flashpoint. Arma 2 looks astounding, on a whole new scale- but I hear there are some problems as well. I also hear that it eats graphics cards
TBH I didn't really understand where all the negativity towards Crysis was coming from. I played it after all the hype and hoopla had died down, and found it a very entertaining and immersive experience. You might also like Warhead, but I'd play through the orig first. FarCry 2 has really nice GFX but the gameplay somehow falls short, considering the freedom you are given, your abilities and the reactive environment. I just uninstalled it today as I was fed up with it.
If you've never played any of the Stalker games, I'd recommend taking a look. Graphics probably aren't cutting edge by todays standards, but the atmosphere is incredible. I also recommend reading 'Roadside Picnic' if you can get your hands on it- the book which originally inspired both the movie and the game. It's a great accompaniment to the game as it helps to bring you closer to the mindset of the wise and hardened Stalker, and fleshes out the underlying vibe of 'The Zone' in a way that only good literature can do.
Some other gfx intensive titles you may like..
PT Boats (http://www.gamershell.com/download_21133.shtml) (looks interesting- not out yet. DX10 gfx are nice. There's a benchmark to test your rig in the link)
X3 (http://www.egosoft.com/games/x3/info_en.php) - Terran Conflict (if you have the time and like big ships in space, this might be for you. It's a fairly complex game.. lots to chew on).
Fallout 3 - Great game with TONS of environmental and narrative detail.
err.. iRacing? :scratchch
I don't get to play many games these days but I've just found Plants Vs Zombies (http://www.popcap.com/games/pvz). By no means will this stress your new card, but it's fantastic nonetheless.
Enjoy your pasta ;)

Try using in-game AA and AF. I was getting 50-90 fps with nvidia 32xq AA, but that looked pretty bad - too much AA haha. Switched to in-game 8xaa and 16x AF with default LOD values. Now I get 200-250 FPS, never dips below 150 (v-sync'd to 75 though)
Also try to overclock a bit, maybe 3.2ghz, spend $30 usd on an aftermarket cooler (xigmatek dark knight is good), 3.5-3.6ghz. Will get you a lot of performance.

Also, this is my very first ATI card - i was thinking that it really sucks and ive gotta deal with hilariously huge number of problems but no ... the card works like charm and i havnt had any compability issues yet, except some games what have been installed with nVidia PhysX settings and stuff, AGEIA PhysX didnt help tho. Im talking about Mirrors Edge and there are few more games. Shadowww, i was like u before - that "ATI sucks" and stuff, but now when im pretty proud owner of one HD4870 then i can say people who say it sucks are stupid. Its just the way it is, my ATI card performs so well that im just so amazed. Before i had to play GTA IV with crappy lowest settings and 800x600 to play it almost on realtime fps. If it gets stuck, it may not be gfx problem. Check ur other hardware or reinstall lfs.

You know what... I've heard some people saying the 9800GX2 is hot... well, I guess I have to agree with them. :)Well, thats not sexy at all because a hot lady is holding a fckin geek object in her hands. U know what i mean? Like, those pics are only hot for nerds/gamers/geeks and so on. Normal ppl only like the girl and not card wich makes it not perfect picture. :D
girl yes = things in her hands etc = no
