View Full Version : Closing CTRA chat box crashes Firefox
STROBE
5th April 2008, 20:03
Just a heads up, there appears to be a problem with the chat box on the CTRA website. I made the mistake of opening it, and everytime I try and close it, Firefox crashes. It's taken multiple attempts at restoring Firefox sessions or starting new ones, to actually get back to the CTRA site in a form that won't crash Firefox again. :-/

Odd, I have never had the problem....

I did make some changes yesterday, which were supposed to be invisible, but I think it messed up somewhere. I can't properly test in FF because I refuse to install QuickTime.
Please give it another try.. I've undone the changes which (in theory) should take it back to a working window again.

I've just tried as many things with the chatroom as I can think of in FireFox 2.0.0.13, no problems at all. Seems you've hunted down the problem. Nice feature, too :)

Switch to a decent browser? May I suggest Safari?
/me hates Firefox, them deciding, "HAI, LETS BREAK ALL USER INTERFACE THINGS PEOPLE ARE USED TO IN FF3, IT'S BRILLIANT!"

I'm tempted to get safari just so that damned apple updater won't crash me out of any more races. But I refuse to be extorted that way.

I just hate Firefox because they've become idiots with FF3's design. Opera is even worse in my eyes, and IE is... IE. Safari is my only remaining life line, but the positive, is I can atleast learn 1 browser for OSX and Windows.

Ok, you've talked me into it..I'm going to try Safari, though it's going to have to be pretty damn good to move me away from Firefox.
EDIT : Ohh ffs...i see it's Apple. A name that constantly screams 'style over substance' at me.

The chatroom application plays a .wav sound when someone sends a new line of text. FF looks for Quicktime to play it.

Oh, really..? :D
Nothing special to hear with opera 9.5. Just the sound when someone is joining or leaving the chat...

Huh. Strange that it would do that without Quicktime being installed, but if you say so. My Firefox (2.0.0.12 and 3.0beta5) seems to play the sound just fine, and I haven't let the atrocity that is Quicktime anywhere near my computer.

I have a codec pack installed (CCCP), but no special Firefox plugin for Quicktime alternative. I may be the WMP plugin which is bundled with Firefox (isnt' it?) is picking up and playing the WAV, but it should be able to do that without codecs too. That is in fact why I was surprised that Firefox was crying for Quicktime in the first place. Unless Quicktime had been previously installed and cocked about with the mime types that is (which would be just like it).
Anyway, sorry about the OT. I just found the whole thing strange and got obsessive trying to figure out why. :D

Safari! are you crazy?!
My crash log is soo full right now! It crashes when loading multiple minimized pages, new threads, logging in, Youtube, every single Java or Flash application, and to boot, its extremely slow at all of it! I wanna murder my browser!

How the hell do you get something to crash so much?! I'm pretty stupid when it comes to using browsers, like opening my whole of 200 bookmarks into tabs, and it doesn't crash.

Well, it was not possible for my to import bookmarks from opera to safari. So I crashed...
...and erased Safari.

mine doesn't have tabs, and I think its Safari 1.0 running on OS X 10.3.9.

That explains it. You're using a version that's 2.1 versions ancient, where you should expect something to be unstable. Then again, WHY are you still running Panther?! You could have atleast upgraded to Tiger (10.4).
No offence, but you remind me of people with 386's who complain that their computers are slow and expect some magic software to make it faster again.

I dunno, I haven't felt the urge to get a new cat.
I really should upgrade now though, my sister has 10.5 on her install CDs, maybe I'll try that or something.

In the short time i tried it it didn't crash, but it was so slow, ugly, lacking in features and generally shite in every way compared to Firefox, that it's been erased..never to see the light of day again.
F*** Apple and everything made by them.
There...i feel a lot better for getting that off my chest

not everything made my Apple is crap. just Safari. (and the Macintosh PowerBook 5300 [battery explosions]:P)

iTunes is crap too. And so is QuickTime. Safari is rubbish. Apple notebooks don't count as they are made by other companies.

I've always been a mac fan sorry. I'll agree that alot of it is crap, but I never found windows as easy to use.

I'll use whatever. Windows is good if I want LFS / BSoD's. OSX is good if I just want to design websites, etcera. Linux is good if I want to stare at a terminal window for 4 hours wondering why X11 won't start due to an errant hyphen.

I'm posting from my iPhone and from what I can tell I appear to have less crashing problems on my over priced Apple with its style over content issues than the OP's Firefuxed PC !
What can I say, I got style! Its not often you hear a butch dyke say that!

It works well in Opera 9.5, but that's beta. There are some problems with earlier versions.
