View Full Version : My LFS CD

I have created an autorun for my LFS install CD. With the DVD cover from KNAPPO (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=3381) and some tools (Ghostcar, Spotter, Join2LFS, Graphic Mods... -> http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=2928) it looks very cool :thumb: (positiv feedback from my friends - with s2 license too; they have get a CD as a little christmas gift from me ). See the pics!

CD content:
- Setup versions of LFS, LFS Dedicated Host, LFS Music Add-On
- Setup version for additional Skins/Textures (including clean uninstall!)
- Setup versions for Tools and Mods (also uninstall)
- Setup versions for Graphic Mods (without uninstall but warn message! )
- Show room for all cars, tracks (without S2 track details) and movies
- PDF versions of Keyboard commands and the (unofficial) S2 Manual (http://lfs.racenetwork.de/index.php/Main_Page)

Have anybody else create his own LFS CD? (not only covers)

PS: Sorry, but english isn't my prefered language. :(

Sorry, i meant image file , like nero image file for example :) Something , we can burn out to a CD . :shy:

From my side this is possible but:

1. I have to ask all devs of the tools and, of course, the live for speed devs too if I'm allowed to publish they programs on a CD (image).

2. Where I can host an nero image of 685 MB?! Ok, an image without the movies have a size of 336 MB - but the question is the same! I think my hosting provider isn't lucky if a host this image on his (shared) server! :D

I mean that once patch R is out, they won't work.

No idea  - ask the tool devs?!

You could host it via a torrent

MataGyula

i think that it is not illegal because You are not selling it . As long as You are not asking money for the image , i think it is good :)
but correct me if iam wrong :tilt:
sharing it via torrent would be great  or on one of the P2P networks

Permission request to the devs of lfs is pending... :) If I got the permission, then I ask the devs of the tools and mods - else, if I don't get the permission of any dev (lfs nor tools/mods), I don't publish the ISO (not via HTTP/FTP and not via Torrent)

Your right, that I don't get money, but I don't want also any law problems :schwitz: - so, I ask the devs first

Thanks for your little message on LFSW - I do love the fact that people are polite!

If you wish to, as you state, but my 'This is S2' on your CD then I would be honoured. To think that people like my cheesy fiddlings enough to clutter up their CD's with... makes me go wibble.

I shouldn't see why it would be a problem as you are not selling it or claiming the content to be completely your own. As far as they are concerned it would be like a free mirror to host...

What about posting a version without S2 in it, would save a 130 mb of bandwidth from every download as most of us already have it, obviously leave a version with S2 that we could give to people who don't have LFS :thumb:

Pasci

G(o)A]I shouldn't see why it would be a problem as you are not selling it or claiming the content to be completely your own.

Some tools do have points in the license agreement  , so I NEED permission to publish it elsewhere !

What about posting a version without S2 in it,

It's a complet CD. The setup routine for LFS writes the path to LFS.exe in the registry, so I can check this entry with the other setups and can define this value as an default path for the installation. So the installation of all other data (add music, textures, cars, tools, mods and so on) is simpler and faster, else I must browse to the right path manually (where the LFS.exe is).

My idea behind this little project: The setup of all tools on the cd should be so easy as possible... so, REALLY EVERYBODY can install Live for Speed on his PC! :thumb: That's what I want! At the moment, most racers they use/drive LFS have good PC knowledge, I think?

I hope you understand my english? :D

I've got some permissions from the devs!
Especially for Live for Speed S2, Live for Speed S2 Dedicated Host, Live for Speed S2 Additonal Music :thumb:

Of course, the devs doesn't support the distribution.
Support source is lfsforum.net! :)

Everbody I've asked agreed :thumb: ...so far! Some permissions are still pending.

If you do get the go-ahead to distribute this you might want to make it a torrent. That's the best way to quickly distribute such a large file when you don't have access to server bandwidth.

I think this looks like a great idea. Although, personally, I would have left the desert/snow "mods" off and included Replay Analyzer and F1PerfView instead. I noticed the videos and skins links. Which videos/skins do you have on there? Do you have the high res sky textures on there? What would it take to get the S2 track layouts added?

edit: You might want to add the LFS S2 Wiki .pdf on there as well.

Yes, the distribution is via torrent... infos are available, if the image is released (with all modifications; additional licenses infos and so on) and I have all permissions.

Replay Analyzer and F1PerfView I don't know. But, I will see, I can also include it on the cd.

Which videos/skins do you have on there? Do you have the high res sky textures on there? What would it take to get the S2 track layouts added?

Movies on CD are:
AAL S2 demo series 1
Adrenaline show drifting S1
Crashes and Stunts 3
Drift LT S2
Drift Fury 1 S2
Drift Fury 2 S2
Just Racing S2
Saiko D demo movie S1
This is S2

Skins
Skins from 4players.de
Skins from Gobby (FO8)

The High Res Sky Textures are also part of Skins/Texture setup program.
Do you have other content (track layout) to publish on the cd?

edit: You might want to add the LFS S2 Wiki .pdf on there as well.

This is the unofficial LFS S2 Manual, right? Yes, this is also included. Directly readable from the CD (button on the main view of autorun). So you can read it without installation. With the installation of Live for Speed, this is an option to install the manual too. A shortcut in the windows menu to the PDF document is also created, if this install option is selected.

The skins from the Master Skinnerz forum would be a good addition. They're all very high quality and look great, plus they're designed specifically to be distributed to a wide audience.

You might also consider putting Don's slow motion vids on there along with "Szwei" and "Run Riot" if there's room to spare. Those seem to be the most well received videos so far and they do a lot to show off the tracks, cars, and features of S2.

About distributing via torrent, it's not ideal but it's the best of a limited few choices. And as long as you're distributing a CD iso it really shouldn't be a problem for most people to burn it to CD.

Now we need to get CD art to go with the package! :)

no i dont have solution for hosting. maybe lfsteam does.
also if u distro a dvd .iso its ideal for me and someothers, but again it defeats the purpose of the whole project.
one big selfinstalling file is all people can handle.

I think You are all getting away from the original idea ( to post the image file of the CD ). IMO there is no need to add anything , because it will be a lot of work and the image file will grow & grow & grow till we'll have a DVD image :(
Pasci has made a great work and i think he has made enough :tilt:

I would say quite the opposite. I would like for the CD to include as much as possible (so long as it fits on a single, inexpensive CD-R). That way I can easily distribute the game to friends and they don't have to go through the trouble of hunting down additional tools and downloads. Not to mention, this would be a GREAT thing to give to my brother who is interested int he game, but doesn't really want to download 500MB worth of stuff over 56k.

The people with broadband won't mind the extra download time. The people with 56k won't bother whether it's 250MB or 800MB. So, you might as well go big. So long as it fits on a single CD, I say cram as much stuff on there as possible. I'll burn off a dozen copies and distribute them to friends. Then I'll burn off a dozen more and conspicously leave them in the break room, meeting rooms, outside my office door, etc. :) CD-Rs are cheap enough that doing so costs virtually nothing. Using DVDs would be another story. Not to mention it would take a lot to find 4+GB of content related to LFS anyway.

One more thing to add: Bob's "Easy Race" setups. When I made a CD for someone a few months back I put those on in place of the Default setups.

You can get the skins directly from the Master Skinnerz forum. Just look in the "Skin Challenge (http://skinnerz.proboards26.com/index.cgi?board=challenge)" forum in each "Round Results" thread or PM me your email addy and I'll send you a small zip with the winners for each round (though some of the runners-up are really great too).

The new layout of my next auto run program looks like the layout of the liveforspeed.net web site. :thumb: At the moment it's not perfect and so I won't publish any new screenshots, before I finish the whole project!
But the result will be much better then the first release of my auto run GUI. I promise!!! :D

My next steps:

Soon I'll create the setup scripts/files, test them, test them again, again and again, still hoping everything will work how it should. If it does, I will create a new handsome ISO image you can work with.

A new little release status report (should be the last before final release):

The new autorun is done. Some changes are still possible, but will be small (I hope). Please look at the pics! (I publish the pictures of the Autorun yet before the actual publication appointment. :) )

Some setup programs are done (for example: the core simulation). I hope, the final version becomes until the end of January finished... under circumstances also first on the end of February! My goal is natural the end of january! :D

Last but not least: My provider allow me to publish the ISO on my domain! So, two download servers are available therefore (the other is still 4players.de).

How is this project progressing? I ask bacause I think it would be a cool thing to be able to hand out at the EAS show in Vienna (see here (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=4617)) to raise yet more awareness of LFS (and of course Cyberseat, but I doubt many people will be buying on to play racing games on at home).

If this is usable, then it would be even better if the CD could be printed, but I don't have CD printing facilities. Is this something someone else could help with?

Even if I just burn 100 copies onto CD's with no label it'd be better than nothing.

Now I'm fixing some little uninstall bugs for the Live for Speed-Setup.

But today, I will upload/publish the ISO file. The size of the image will be 545 MB (uncompressed)!

RAR: 5086 KB smaller (normal compression) (will be uploaded)
ZIP: 3327 KB smaller (normal compression)
7Zip: 632 KB smaller (normal compression)

You don't need WinRAR to uncompress the archiv. I'm using FilZip (http://filzip.com/) (it's free).

Know but still unfixed bugs:

Movie player
At the moment I can't locate the problem :( (movies are playing - I hear sound - but see no picture; if I skip to the next movie and go back, I hear sound and see also the picture). All movies are in Windows Media Player Format. But I don't know which codecs are used. If have tried on a clean WinXP installation with all Updates (still Media Player 9). wmp.dll is needed/player is based on. Works also with Media Player 10. Older: I don't know!

Ghostcar Uninstall
I'm going crazy! The menu link to the readme file will not deleted while uninstall. I don't no why.

All other parts of the CD (should be) work fine. I have installed all tools and mods (without DeserMod/SnowMod). Needs up to 558 MB harddisc space.

But please: be patient - The upload take also I while!

I will create a new thread for questions, problems and of course the download links to the iso file - asap.

As someone who works on installation routine for a living I would say that a true uninstall should remove all files, folders, shortcuts, and registry keys. But if there is the possibility of an re-install or an upgrade you have three options.

1) Do nothing remove the config file along with the rest of the application.
2) Prompt for back up of the config files so the user has access to them if they choose to re-install or upgrade.
3) Automatically back up the config files for the user and let them how where there are in a message box.

Personally I would go for option 2 and give the user the ability to specify where the backups should be created.

With an re-install no config file will be overwritten! If an config file (for which app ever) exist, this file while be skipped.

Be all setups the uninstall remove folders, shortcuts and registry keys correctly. Only the Ghostcar uninstall doesn't. I think, I will recreate the setup file again later.

I did not plan this CD as a luxury version. The installation of LFS should be as simple as possible.

Hi

Ive noticed you choose some 'random' movies to your cd, wich 2 of them are mine (DF.1and2)

I just want to say that, dont you think it would be better to make a special selection of wich videos will be in this cd, and, i can make a few special videos, a more 'neutral' videos, whitout being of anyone in particular, neither me, like a promo movie showing togheter the most active lfs communitys around the globe, same for teams, could be a video whit the cooperation of the lfs torque drift community...im sure most people would agree, and quite small but high quality.

My last video is "traction zero: we are back' if you want to check my work.

if want to talk, add sL_the_end@hotmail.com
