Windows XP : East Asian Language Support / Font Installation

LFS does not support double byte characters with Windows 98 / ME. Windows XP and Vista should work well but you may need to install fonts.

If you have Windows XP and currently cannot see the East Asian translations, here's how to set up your computer so it works.
See the attachment - in Control Panel click on "Regional and Language Options" then under the "Languages" tab select "Install files for East Asian Languages".
Windows will probably ask you to get your XP CD and the fonts will be installed from it.

This is important even if you do not use Chinese, Japanese or Korean translations so you can see East Asian text and player names correctly when you are online.

I get a better FPS on another LFS installation with high-res packs and the best graphics options in ATI Catalyst...(normal patch Y)

Found a reproducable bug :(

If you change AA settings in game with mirrors or dials set to virtual or off (real ones off basically), then the area where the real mirrors/dials would be goes corrupted/weird.

Noticeable on incar view, mirror corruption also visible on external view (they go all pink for me).

AndroidXP
18th March 2008, 17:37
E: ^ I can reproduce this, too.

Okay just tested:

AF setting still doesn't do anything for me. Also tried setting it with nHancer (as I've used it before), but to no avail.

AA setting works fine

Though one suggestion, maybe you should remove the 3x mode and add the 8x one instead. As far as I know, the 3x is in reality the 2x Quincunx mode, which is just a blurry piece of crap. I have no idea why anyone would ever want to use it, as IMO the normal 2x mode is superior to it. Though if the 8x selection is not easy to implement, just leave it like that.

Another thing, now that AA is officially supported, can you see if there's an easy fix to prevent the transparent tree textures having a small pixel line on top of them (caused by AA, see attachment). It has been like that forever, but now that AA is not forced anymore, maybe you can do something about it.

I can't really make an good comparison because i use some high-res packs in one of my LFS installations. (also AF/A-A in drivers)

Well, I think it's ok now.. FPS seems some lower, but I think the AF works some better in Y14...

I can select 16x in driver options but only have 2x, 4x, and 8x in game.

Hmm... that's strange... My card does support 8x but it doesn't show in-game...

I still prefer setting my AA/AF settings from an external program. nHancer to be specific. They just offer wider variety of options.
Altough for less experienced players having the settings in game is a good option.

AndroidXP
18th March 2008, 17:58
Ah, I think I know what it is. LFS "only" supports pure multisampling AA, whereas the 8x I was talking of is actually the 8xS mode, which is a combination of 1x2 supersampling + 4x multisampling. It has crap performance anyway, so no need to investigate this further, Scawen. If anyone wants to use these modes, they should use profile or programs like nHancer to force it. :)

Is it just me or....?

Prior to Y13/Y14 I had all the AA/AF settings done through nHancer or the nVidia Control panel...no probs at all, looked pretty, and ran WELL...
Installed Y14 and set the card options to "Let the Application Control it" wherever I could...set AA and AF 'in game' to almost what they were in the card control panel, and... a DRASTIC drop in frame rates..
Gone form 200+ fps to a measly 40 - 60 fps at BL! (full 20 car grid of AI's)
Anybody else lost lots of FPS???

Tried restarting LFS and my PC.Most likely global or application specific settings in your graphics drivers. You must make sure they are set to "application controlled" or whatever.

does this work with normal y servers?Yes, that is what "compatible" means. I would always make it very clear in the first post if it was not compatible.

Is anyone using this
169.28_forceware_winxp_32bit_international_beta
driver?

As I said in the Y13 topic, 'let program controlled' option just doesn't work for me.
Driver always seems to override settings. I don't know what to do. Made default settings - no changes.
Than made forced options with application controlled settings.

I started Counter Strike: Source. Made AA&AF changes, and they appeared correctly the time I set them.

So. Is it driver problem, or LFS not forcing correctly? Someone in same situation?

Seems to be a known problem with some nVidia drivers:
Forcing AA from the control panel is broken in all drivers after 169.13 and before 171.xx. This is common knowledge on guru3d forums.
That's why I'm using 174.20

I'm a n00b - forgive me.

I've got an 8800GTX and 174.16 Xtreme-G drivers. ATM I have nHancer set to 16xAF and AA set to 16xQ Coverge Sample. I run at 1680*1050 (not that I think this makes any difference). Do I run LFS using nHancers settings, or would setting the AA / AF via LFS be better? Performance isn't an issue (CPU limited), i'm just after maximum quality.

Woohoo, in-game FSAA controls! Thanks Scawen!

Just had a quick test in XFG around Blackwood (my test version of LFS isn't unlocked) and the in-game FSAA controls work a treat. Superb - no more faffing around with the crappy nvidia control panel!

I was unable to notice any performance drop, FPS was maxed out at ~260 regardless of my graphical settings.

Still couldn't tell any difference between the AF settings though. Could anyone post some full-size screenies to show LFS with and without full AF? Mine looks fine, I'm not noticing textures blurring anywhere, so I'm just wondering whether mine is somehow fixed on or off.

Curiously, switching on 8×FSAA causes my gfx card fan to spin up. It's an 8800GT, which has a rather noisy cooler. Fortunately, I've got a Thermalright HR-03 GT waiting to go on it. :) I thought it odd though, as I was under the impression LFS was generally CPU-bound and didn't come close to even slightly taxing modern gfx cards. I guess the extra work of FSAA makes enough of a difference though to need more fan speed.

Running a 8800GTX - Ran LFS with Patch Y 14 earlier this eveing no isses - was running great on the triple head - I flicked on V Sync to run the machine comfortably with 60 frames. Every thing is running full - all siders to the right - every thing maxed (as per normal)

Saw JAks post about updating drivers and thought why not - not a problem.

Updated to drivers noted by Jak - 174.16

Went back into game - its started no probs - half way round the track of a single player game -I pressed paused and went into settings and turned off V Sync - wanted to check frame rate capabilities.

Thought ahh I am running nhancer - I set it in there - so alt-tabbed and turned of v sync in nhancer. Went back into LFS - and on alt tabbing back in - the game crashed - and now -"Cannnot initialize graphics".

Ive turned of fnhancer, and the nvidia control panel - after reseting v sync in nhancer - and this version of LFS now wont work.

I have a back up copy on another HD - so updated that to y14 - but it has no skins or settings in.

This version works - but if I go to choose any AA or AF other than the default - the game crashes. it will run ok with default.

Can anyone reproduce or similar issues?

I will leave both installations as they are (for referal purposes) - and will install another fresh version onto another HD.

Something else now:
I can't paste any of the asian languages into the chat text input box. I only get question marks but sometimes some random character is taken into account.

Example with Japanese text:
I open Commands_Japanese.txt with Notepad and I copy the first line after the title (screenshot 1)
I open the text input box in LFS, I select Japanese and I paste the text (screenshot 2)
Only one character is shown, but I'm not even sure it's the correct one.

I have an issue with welcome texts. Diacritic characters of European languages show like cyrillic, because the text is written in single-byte characters. Host owners see their welcome.txt in their codepage (French, Italian, Swedish), but my local LFS takes that text as cp1251 and Cyrillic. I see "piщ" instead of "piů", "fцr" instead of "für" and so on. Other users must also have the same problem.

BTW, what happens if someone makes a multibyte welcome.txt?

IMO, it´s better to detect codepage (or decode unicode txt) and tag the welcome message on host.

I still can't reproduce it - please can you describe exactly how to do this? For example how can you load a car while the track is loading? LFS doesn't allow me to join the race while a track is loading...

Only one character is shown, but I'm not even sure it's the correct one.Did you set Japanese as the "language to match the language version of the non-unicode programs you want to use" ? As LFS is non-unicode you need to do this. There are side effects, e.g. every backslash in Windows will then be a Yen sign, but at least you can enter Japanese characters into LFS.

See attached image.

Easiest way I found was to load a road car (I used the race about) then load WE1 - then load WE1R - every time I switch from WE1 to WE1R it gives that error no matter what setup I have (default or one of my own).

Somehow your computer is behaving differently from others. That's how this bug is, it just appears on someone's computer, they can reproduce it for a while, then it goes. It sounds like an uninitialised data type of bug but I can't count the number of times I have been through that code and I can't see any problem with it...

Please could you attach a zip of your path rubber files WE1.trs and WE1R.trs (from your data\knw folder) and we'll see if we can reproduce the bug with your Westhill path rubber files. Though I have a vague memory I've tried this before and it didn't reproduce the bug on another computer.

Might be a bit of a stupid question but why don't you just use a flag somewhere in the track files instead of analysing the rubber path files? Seems to me like it would be a much simpler and more error proof method.

I don't think it analyses the path rubber. But people always report that if you drive on the grass too much, this happens... although this is usually denied. The code is supposed to analyse something that never changes on anyone's computer. But apparently, something does change. There's no point putting an editor switch into LFS when it can quite simply work out for itself if a track is rallycross or not.

Oh hell, it's one of those things, eh?
I tried it out on another PC and indeed it doesn't do this despite the installation being essentially a copy from the PC that does do it (only the player profile differs AFAIK). Further investigation showed that the PC which does it (older installation) doesn't have a .trs file for WE1R whereas the one that doesn't do it has one.

Despite this matter which my keen and restless eye has spotted only due to it being so obvious, I've included the set of files that I see accessed by LFS (.trs, .lyt and the player profile) from both PCs.

I removed my WE1.trs and WE1R.trs and saved your WE1.trs...

I still can't reproduce it - please can you describe exactly how to do this?
Single player -> on the entry screen change track, wait for the track to load and now select another track,
Once you have selected the new track, click on the Garage button and select a setup or go to the Car selection and change car, say select a GTR,
Click on OK (twice if needed) and if you're fast enough you're back to the entry screen while the track is still loading and bingo! You get the message.
Happens online too if you select another setup during a track change. Works with any track. FYI I'm mostly driving the GTR's (including the 'small' ones) and the single seaters.

As LFS is non-unicode
Oh I have misunderstood then as I thought LFS was now fully unicode compliant.
OK I got it, thanks for the answer.

BTW there is a little interface annoyance since patch Y:
When you're on the main menu if you hit Esc to exit the game you are prompted for confirmation but if you click on the Exit button there is no prompt.
I sometimes click that fast and once too much that I exit the game while I only wanted to go back to the main menu.

LFS uses multi-byte characters, but that should not be confused with Unicode, which is something else entirely.

That old bug that was reproducable at Westhill is now fixed. It could happen if you changed to a config with no trs, from a config which did have a trs and it was seen "reversed" and this could mean the rubber was on the grass. This bug combined with another bug that the rallycross calculation did in fact depend on the rubber positioning, caused that message to come up sometimes. Both bugs are now fixed, the rubber is zeroed at the right time and the rallycross calculation is no longer affected by the rubber position.

Single player -> on the entry screen change track, wait for the track to load and now select another track,
Once you have selected the new track, click on the Garage button and select a setup or go to the Car selection and change car, say select a GTR,

Happens online too if you select another setup during a track change. Works with any track. FYI I'm mostly driving the GTR's (including the 'small' ones) and the single seaters. This is different and I'll have a look at that soon.

BTW there is a little interface annoyance since patch Y:

I sometimes click that fast and once too much that I exit the game while I only wanted to go back to the main menu. That is a deliberate change.

I understand that it is annoying if you make a mistake and end up on the credits screen.

BUT It's even more annoying how it was before, every time you clicked to exit, LFS would ask "Exit LFS?".
You feel like saying : YES!!! That's why I clicked EXIT!!!

So, it's better that you sometimes annoy yourself by your own mistake, than LFS annoying you 100% of the time. :) This was requested by a user, by the way and I agreed, it annoyed me too, sometimes programs are annoying when they don't just do what you want. It's not like you're going to lose some unsaved data or anything like that.

With the key it's different, it's so easy to press, it needs the confimation.

With the exception of a couple of minor InSim and network debug message, how much value is there in running the latest dedicated server version, if the changelog doesn't indicate a change?

I try to keep with the updates on the our servers, but how much value is in it, particularly if the the clients are backward compatible? To your credit I have yet to see a dedicated server problem with the last 35 or so updates, which is great achievement, but it also raises this question.

I've noticed some troubles with some nick names which are using special characters:

Screenshot 1: how it should be and how it's displayed in patch Y
Screenshot 2: same nick name displayed in patch Y14
Screenshot 3: this nick name destroyed the whole line including "s'est déconnecté" (has disconnected)

And the screenshot 4 is showing a FXR with a TV screen on the dashboard (Patch Y14) :D
It's from the default TV cam, the car had stopped on the side of the track after the race.
Not sure what is the cause of that, there was no other strange glitch on screen but it vanished after switching views from TV cam to cockpit view and back to TV cam.

With the exception of a couple of minor InSim and network debug message, how much value is there in running the latest dedicated server version, if the changelog doesn't indicate a change?Wel... not that much value for you really. Usually if it's important to test the dedi I'll make a post in the hosts forum. I just upload the dedi of every test patch so at least some hosts will use it and if there is any issue with it, it should get noticed. Sometimes a change I make might just break the dedi in some unexpected way, so it's good that it is tested. But from your point of view, only update it if it is convenient or seems like a good idea.

I've noticed some troubles with some nick names which are using special characters:

Screenshot 1: how it should be and how it's displayed in patch Y
Screenshot 2: same nick name displayed in patch Y14Not really a bug. The "bug" is that the player with the corrupted name is using an old LFS and there were some characters from the Latin code page in the spaces now correctly used for lead bytes of double byte characters on the Japanese code page. This player used those characters and could fix that by using the new patch and switching to Latin before adding those characters. This kind of problem will just go away when everyone uses the new patch and corrects their names.

Screenshot 3: this nick name destroyed the whole line including "s'est déconnecté" (has disconnected)A related issue where the final byte in the player's name is now a lead byte of a double byte character. That lead byte has "eaten" the "^" of the "^8" which would have returned to the Latin code page after the name. It's possible to protect against this and it's on my list to see if it's easy to do, though again this kind of problem would mostly disappear when the patch goes official so it's not high priority.

And the screenshot 4 is showing a FXR with a TV screen on the dashboard (Patch Y14) :D
It's from the default TV cam, the car had stopped on the side of the track after the race.
Not sure what is the cause of that, there was no other strange glitch on screen but it vanished after switching views from TV cam to cockpit view and back to TV cam.Maybe you had done one of those things which can corrupt unused mirrors or dashboards. The latest one is changing to AA. Some people get this when they press ALT+TAB, or perhaps change window size in some way. Most cases are protected but sometimes the behaviour is different on different computers.

Bug reproduction request :

On consultation with my pc guru friend - he advised deleting the config file and restarting LFS.

This done - LFS now ran - but on changing the AA and AF to anything higher than default- the game crashed. Result would be to delete config file again.

Rolled back drivers to 169.28 - all working fine again.

I dont think the 174.16 are whql???

It seems like your card is overheating, since this is pretty clearly vertex corruption. Try downgrading to patch Y and forcing it in the CP to see if it goes away. My guess is it won't and it was just coincidence it started happening with Y14

Now if i set AA4x i get about 40 more fps which is good. And i think it'll be enough for me with this video card.Given the fafct that lfs is much more cpu depending than gpu,i expected a minor impact on fps.Mine was just a reflection about 8xxx nvidia series which should be very competitive with filters activated, but probably its me requesting too much from this poor (yet overclocked) video card.Keep up the good work Scawen, now im looking forward for multicore support:thumb:

On my computers, everything looks very pixelated then, almost impossible to look at. Im always using -1.00 for all mip values, and AF to make it look sharp again.
As I've seen a lot lfs newbies complaining about the flickering road specially on south city, some more economic default value might be nice?

-4.0 for the road is really hardcore (feels like a 60Hz CRT :) )

Same for me...i had to put everything on the left in bias...losing something like 20 fps just for that.

anything below 8x supersampling looks nasty in lfs
i suppose its got something to do with the way theres a lot of high contrast poly edges at shallow angles on screen

I'm glad to see that the devs are starting to care about the graphics :)

They've always cared about graphics (you probably weren't here when they went from S1 to S2 so you don't know about the major graphics improvements at that time), but there have always been more important things to do. Also, I don't think this patch was supposed to have graphical updates, until people started pushing Scawen for them. Anyway, as much as I welcome improvements to the graphics, my computer can't even handle AA, so these new graphics options are useless for me. That's why I'd personally like to see physics improvements rather than graphics improvements. But that's just my opinion. :thumb:

I can't see it mentioned but then I did skim read: I can change AF on the fly and all works great, but to change FSAA I have to restart LFS for it to have any effect (and LFS jerks up for a few seconds while it thinks, but ultimately does nothing).

Before when I turned on AF with driver settings, in LFS and in RBR I saw these artefacts: dashes across roads. Now they are in LFS. I can't test if they were there in patch Y, but definitely they are here now, and I can't remove them at all: even with no AA/AF and minimal (most negative) mip bias, they are still there on the roads.

Same with me. Radeon 3850. I remember seeing this a month or so ago, so nothing to do with Y14. It looks like white lines where the road textures meet but only around mid view distance, very visual when road bias set to 0 and no AA/AF. I can't get rid of them by changing Z buffer/Catalyst AI/Mip Changes in Catalyst Control Centre etc.
It just feels like your coming around to the start grid around various corners. More noticeable on certain tracks like fern bay gold rev (first like six corners).

Widdowmaker
24th March 2008, 08:29
This happens very clearly on Blackwood Rev, as you come around Popeye, and head up the back straight. First sign of it is under the bridge, and then at the bottom of the slope where the rise is on the back stetch. It does disapear as you get closer and it does seem to be terrain related.

Those lines appear usually in 3D apps/games when you set AF to the maximum value, if you notice they are either on UVmapping "seams" or where a texture loops - they're also visible on cars (on the "seams" of the models).

Did you try uninstalling your drivers and going for a clean installation? Sometimes profile settings get messed up with nvidia and they don't actually do what you tell them to.

Dustin: You mean non-zero negative mipBias? I've tried both 0 and very negative mip bias (that's visible on the screenshots) and these dashes were visible in both cases.

Hmm, I just had another play now, at 0 they're least noticeable, but anything higher, and they become clearer than 20/20. It almost makes me wonder what would happen with a positive MipBias.

I don't know if this will be of any assistance. I used to get those white horizontal lines across the roads when I pushed up AA on my ATI 9800pro and my x1950pro.

I was messing about with track texture dds files and removed the start/finish lines for a cruise server I am a admin of. Well, once the start/finish was removed, the white lines also disappeared. The texture of the white finish line seems to bleed across and onto the edges of other textures on the road where the textures join together and wrap around. I even found removing about 4 pixels of the edge finish line sometimes removed this phenomenon.

Oh well, just some FYI spam really, but if the start/finish line was moved back from the edges of the texture then this whole issue might be fixed. I dont really know how the textures map onto a 3D polygon, but I'm just guessing a white edged texture might wrap AA artifacts around to the other side of the texture when AA is applied. Although offsetting the start lines a few pixels might require some new map adjustments to make the texture "fit" again, but even a quick hack solved the problem for the experiments I did.

Have a great day all.

By default, press left and view rotates 45° to the left. While holding left press right and view rotates another 45° making it 90° in total (this was made for cheking blind spots I guess).

Short story: It's like that so you can check out mirrors and I guess while driving IRL you don't actually look back unless you're going in reverse.

This has been argued before, little search would help but I'm on work and no time for that :)
IIRC it's not going back to the X patch system.

Now this has nothing to do with this test patch, so enough offtopicness :)

I'm having graphical problems since I used this patch. After some time running the game (like 10 mins) it's like random flat coloured triangles spawn from the horizon totally messing the image up and then my computer crashes. Is it possible that my old gfx card is dying and it has nothing to do with the game? I have a problem with Vista 64bit and as far as I can tell my friend with his 32bit Vista has the same problem.

So here it is: We do experience a huge FPS drop when the game runs in a window that fills the whole screen. When the window is resized to about 75% the FPS goes up by about 50-75%. If explorer.exe is shutdown the FPS goes up even 50% more in the windowed mode and about 25% in the fullscreen mode.
I can not remember to have these problems before. It also is a bit of a problem since i run a dual monitor configuration. Hope this helps.

I do get the same problem if I run the game in a maximized window on a single monitor. When I use two monitors I must use maximized window and not fullscreen to see the desktop and run the game in the same time.

On a earlier patch I could run the game on one screen and use the desktop and IE+WMP on the other with about 90-100FPS in 1680*1050 resolution. Now I am down to about 30-40 without AA/AF and with AA/AF enabled I have about 20-25FPS

I may have just picked up on this behaviour with a recent colo outage, but if the master server is not contactable during the launch, it never retries to register, effectively requiring a restart.

If this has always been the case, I'll just add it to dedi server wish list.
