What is Freetrack?
Freetrack is a free software similar to Track-IR™ (http://www.naturalpoint.com/) (Freetrack is compatible with a majority of games using this technology) which makes it possible to simulate head movements in your games and simulators, to increase pleasure, realism and immersion.
It makes it possible to control your point of view in a video game or simulator, with small head movements. What could be more natural than to turn your face towards the rear view mirror to look in this rear view mirror? How to make it simpler than to just lower your eyes to check the switch of the headlights of your Cessna?
The immersion is really improved, you just have a better awareness of the other vehicles in motor race games, you carry out more beautiful approaches in flight simulators,…

Is the motion translated like with a TrackIR set (left-right = X and up down = X) or can it be configured to be more intuitive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw) (the translation is not direct panning per se but acts more like an extension of your visual space)? Could freetrack be tweaked to do the latter sort of translation?

All I know is that u can:
Look - Left, Right, Up and Down
Move - Left, Right, Forward and Back
Tilt Head - Left, Right, Up, Down
That is everything... right?

Not exactly - but I guess my query is best suited for the FreeTrack forums, so I'll ask there as soon as I get some time. Thanks.

Free track works for me without this thing :)
And use Infrared LED's (You can took them from TV/RADIO/DVD PLAYER/ETC remote, o just buy them in the store). Head movement is readen (bad English :( ) better.

No it doesn't :D
The default is way too sensitive and you get shot out of the car when u move lol... mine is made for the following movements:
forward
back
left
right
up
down
In other words mine is tweaked to work for every direction you move :) (FOR 4 POINT TRACKING OR LESS)

... I have the same problem. I'm using an old bike lamp. I've covered all but one of the LEDs with black tape, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also installed the setup file above. However, in game, It only partially works.. for instance, if I look to the left it will work, but then when I look straight ahead again it doesn't align properly. Quite annoying.
I'm thinking it might be because I'm only using 1 LED? Unfortunately I don't have a soldering iron.. I guess I need to be creative and figure out a way.

Remember that I use 4 leds :D... haven't tested it with 1 or any other... but it should work :really:
You probley have to create a setup that will work better with 1 led... 4 leds are heaps better tho :thumb:

It works with one LED just fine for me. One LED might be even more accurate at measuring basic movements as the site says.
Now real question: Who really finds it usefull in LFS. To me its too hard to get used to. I use around 80* FOV and I was going to use it just for glances on the mirrors, but its too difficult to get used for me

Does your 1 LED setup work such that when you look to the side and then look straight ahead again, you're looking straight ahead in the car again? The problem for me was that it wouldn't keep up with my head movement. :(
Can you explain why you find it difficult to use? I guess it might be difficult to put into words, but it would be nice..

Yup, goes back to center perfectly and smoothly.
Is your webcam on the supported list? (my cam is MS VX1000) My threashold bar is almoust fully to the right, maybe that might help.

yup, it is hard to explain. Well, I guess its hard for me for the same reason as I quit using "look with steer" option. When the view moves, I loose the feel of the movement of the car. One more difficult thing for me is that I don't really move the head rather than move my eyes when I look onto monitor, so moving the head is a thing I have to think about when driving.

Hm.. I see. It would be very nice to try it out, though, and see for myself. :)
What LED system did you use? I'm having trouble getting my bike lamp to work, even though I've followed the manual. Maybe my webcam has an IR filter..

I'm using Ear Light LED. Its a white color led, but works just fine for me. I also tried IR LED from a TV remote and it works even better (even tho I didn't took out the IR filther)

I've did a quick capture of the way it works for me in LFS. There is a slight jerkiness when looking on big angles, but mostly cause by low sensetiveness I use (33) so when the view jerks my head is about 70* turned and led isn't clearly visible. Still returns to center fast.

That looks amazing! It's pretty impressive that it can be as good as that with only 1 LED. I mean, three I can understand, but only 1?
I can somewhat understand that it's hard to get the directional stability of the car right when using FreeTrack. But are you sure that it's not just a steep learning curve, and that once you've practiced enough with it you'll get comfortable? Sounds to me that given enough practice it can be a pretty useful tool.
I'm going to visit my brother later this week, and I'll ask if I can borrow his 1-LED reading lamp thingy. Will report back here when I've tried it.

Yep, well on the site it says that it can be even more accurate at capturing simple moves than 3 leds afaik:tilt:

I understand the potential, and it looks great when you are standing still, but when you move....Well, its always hard to get used to something, but I'm not sure I'll get used to it

I got it to work! :) The LED reading lamp from my brother did the trick. And I definitely understand what you mean.. it will take a long time to get used to. It gets hard to figure out where your car is pointing when you're not looking straight ahead, since in a simulator you don't feel the forces on your body.
I'll play around with it and see. At any rate it's a pretty impressive little thing.
