View Full Version : LFS Beginners Cup

Some of you may remember (or not!) that I said in a couple of threads (whilst I was a wee demoer - those were the days....) that I might consider setting up an LFS Beginner's Cup when I got S2 - and a few people were intersted even at the mention of it. Well, now I have S2 (thanks Mum! :thumb:) here I am telling you about my plans:
All of the suggestions below are just suggestions, I would appreciate advice and hints about it, if you have any, but, most of all, if you have an interest in entering, then please say so in this thread. It certainly won't be starting (if at all :tilt:) before February at the earliest, as I have mocks all through January
First, I need to clarify 'a beginner'. I, obviously am a beginner coz I got S2 yesterday! However, I think that having S2 for less than about 4 months would be a good starting point. Also, I think I might need a mileage restriction. I've no idea what restriction I'll need to put on this; so some advice would be welcome.
Secondly; the actual series. The way I was going to run it was just to have 6-8 combos that are quite popular online, and run those for the series. However, as I want this series to be an introduction to League Racing, I thought that it would be nice if we nicked ideas from other Leagues into each round of the series. For Example, R1 could be (with Dru's permission!) a Baby-UFR round, with a combo and the rules from that series. R2 could be a RSWC (with Danowat's permission!) round, again with a combo and rules from that series. That way, participants would get a flavour of what sort of Leagues are out there. I'm pretty sure the heads of most Leagues don't care how fast entrants are; just that they're clean and have fun doing it - and might learn a few things from the seasoned pros.
Lastly, I'll need a server (obviously) and I might also request a little help from some people who already run leagues for advice on general running of the League, and what to do on the actual Race Day.
Thanks for reading; Please feel free to post you opinions/advice/interest below.
EDIT: Dekojester (http://www.lfsforum.net/member.php?u=122006) has kindly offered to do either a broadcast of the series (maybe not so likely) or like a summary of each round as a video (if he gets S2!). I was then hoping to send these to the SRT team and get them broadcast on 'This week in Sim Racing'

I had LFS for over a year but only just played it seriously recently, so does that make me a beginner??
I would love to get involved in some cups or proper races for points but I'm having trouble finding um. Maybe I need to look harder?
I think a mileage restriction would be the way to go instead of a monthly limit.
Count me in if I can.
J@tko
24th December 2007, 12:08
Ah, thanks Silky for reminding me - I'll also put in an exception to the rules on entry if you consider yourself a beginner, but aren't under the regs. For example, you havn't played in over a year and have just come back to it, or you've spent all of the 3 years that you've had LFS drifting, and now want to be a racer.
And, yes, you can be in (if you can prove you've only been playing seriously recently :))
The regs are there to stop experienced people from coming in and beating everyone up!

Good to hear. The small problem might be the time difference. I was planning to run this on a weekday evening (in the UK). If I have enough support for it down under then I'll run it later on a Saturday evening, so you lot can join in too!

Ok - I think that the rule will be that if you consider yourself to be a beginner (and a quick look at LFSW confirms that you're not world-class!) than you're welcome to enter. I hope that you're conscience will tell you that pretending to be a beginner and thrashing everyone during the series is not a good thing to do.
Thanks for showing your interest!

i think it would be a good idea if people posted what lap times they can archive, so people can get an idea of the type of pass people will be running, so if you know your alot quicker than most entrants, then you should not enter.
so mine is, XFG @ Blackwood:
Fastest 1.34.66
Average mid 1.35 and low 1.36

I could look on LFSW to see what laptimes people are capable of I suppose. You can't delete your online PB's BTW can you. That might be a good way of weeding out cheats!!! Also, I'll see what milage people have done too - but I'll only kick you out if you've been to the moon and back on LFS!
P.S Updated 1st post with some exciting news!

Yes, you can.
They actually just all got deleted 1 or 2 days ago by Victor because the changes to cars/tracks made them worthless.

 Hey J@tko,
Please save a slot me for this! I've been interested in this idea since you first mentioned it a while ago.
I know it's still in the early days of planning 'n all, but I'd like to take part should it take place. ;)
I got S2 early last month, driven under 4k so far and I just got the G25 (& really struggling with it!) so that makes me a beginner, right?!
...The way I was going to run it was just to have 6-8 combos that are quite popular online, and run those for the series.
Okay, so 6-8 combos...does that mean 6-8 rounds/races?? (yup, i am a beginner!)
Any idea of what they'll be yet? Or the number of laps/race duration? One of them has gotta be the FOX@AS Club! The GTRs@Kyoto is also a popular combination too.
Also, have you any idea in what order the races/rounds shall be run? I think to run them in order of car classes might be a good idea...so start with the low powered cars & finish with the high powered ones (accounting for engine position+drive wheels too)??
Just a thought, because the true beginners will be learning throughout the Cup...
...For Example, R1 could be (with Dru's permission!) a Baby-UFR round, with a combo and the rules from that series. R2 could be a RSWC (with Danowat's permission!) round, again with a combo and rules from that series...
Hmm, I'm not too sure how the rules differ from league to league, but I think it would be wise to stick to one set of rules for the whole series. Apart from compulsory pitstops & penalties, I'm willing to bet that all respectable league events use the same general basic racing rules.
...Lastly, I'll need a server (obviously) and I might also request a little help from some people who already run leagues for advice on general running of the League, and what to do on the actual Race Day.
No server = no series.
If I could help you out with a server then I would. I mean I can run a dedicated server on my PC no problem, but to run an event such as this..well, I really wouldn't feel confident doing so (also, I use WiFi)!
Anyway, keep us posted on what's going on yeah?
Cheers. :)

Yeah - sure. I remember when you were a demo racer, so you can definatly compete! Don't worry about struggling with your G25 - I bet you're still faster then me on my kb!

Actually, what I meant by rules was like the number of laps/pitstops e.t.c, but I used bad wording - sorry! Agreed on the second point; racing rules will be as Clean Racers Club Rules, with some other series specific rules that I have.
I formulated a list of combos that we could use back when I was a demo racer, but that was before Patch Y, and before I tested the combos. With a few changes, here is the calendar, alpha version 0.1. (P.S I like the idea of getting to more powerful [but I've used how hard the are to drive] cars at the end!)
R1: BL GP - either XFG/XRG or FBM
R2: FE RX - RB4
R3: SO SPR 2 R - UF-BR :) (trust me - fantastic combo!)
R4: WE INT - FXO/RB4/XRT
R5: an AX layout - MRT
R5: KY NA R - FOX
R6: AS NA - XRR/FXR/FZR
R7: ? (suggestions please!) - RAC/LX6/FZ6
The races will probably last about 15-20 mins, with one of the rounds (either 4 or 6) being a (sort of!) endurance round, lasting 30 mins with a compulsary pit stop. Obviously this is up for consultation and I'd like to hear your opinions on this.
Anyway, keep us posted on what's going on yeah?
Cheers. :)
Will do! :thumb: It'll either be in this thread or there'll be one in the League Forums (if it gets going!) soon.

Calendar V0.2!
R1: BL GP - either XFG/XRG
R2: FE RX - RB4
R3: SO SPR 2 R - UF-BR :) (trust me - fantastic combo!)
R4: WE INT - FXO/RB4/XRT (poss enduro)
R5: an AX layout - MRT
R5: KY NA R - FBM
R6: AS NA - XRR/FXR/FZR (poss enduro)
R7: FE BL? - RAC/LX6/FZ6

Please, not WE1 with TBOs. I think with GT3-restricted GTRs would work much better here.

I would suggest AS North with the TBOs (I love AS North :shy:) and maybe SO Long as the endurance round with the big GTRs. :)
It's the 7th round so the participants should be able to drive with walls surrounding them. :D

I know I have been around for a year and a bit, but I just got a G25 and still am about 5 - 8 seconds off my normal pace. (which is about 10th place in a 20 car field)
It would be really hard for me to get the time off to race but if I can I would be interested.
P.S. I just got my G25 when the PB's were reset.. so I think most of mine should be with the G25 instead of my old wheel.

What I wanted was one version of each track and as many classes of car as possible. So it would be easy to swap over the TBO to AS NO and GTRs to SO LO. With the thing about GT3 cars, how restricted are they. I might slot them in. I'm off to do a little testing now and will report back.

Hey, maybe we should allow a couple "Pros" in just to be Coaches to critique driving of the less experienced drivers.
One certainly doesn't want something like the NASCAR Busch Series, what with all the "Buschwhackers".
I'm formulating a plan for coverage of this league. I'm trying to think what's worth it at the start..just video recaps (precanned) or F1-style "world feed" that would be distributed for use.

I'm interested. I used to play a ton pre-s1 with the mouse on blackwood (XR mainly). I did play S1 for a bit (even joined a team) but I mainly stuck to blackwood/XR/demo.
I don't remember the last time I played - maybe a year or more (?) but I'm pretty awful now. I just purchased S2 last week. Nearly all the cars/tracks are new to me.

R1: BL GP - XFG/XRG - 10 laps
R2: FE RX - ALL Road Cars - 14 laps
R3: SO CH R - UF-BR/XF-JR - 25 laps
R4: AS NO - FXO/RB4/XRT - 7 laps
R5: an AX layout - MRT - ?
R6: KY NA R/chicane - FBM - 9 laps
R7: SO LO - XRR/FXR/FZR (enduro) - 20 laps w/pit stop
R8: FE BL - RAC/LX4/FZ6 - 5 laps :scratchch
are you shure about the number of laps??
the enduro shuld be longer than R3: SO CH R - UF-BR/XF-JR - 25 laps :scratchch
enduro might be: 60 laps or so... something around two hours of intense racing
we might fix some layouts too, so nobody goes over the grass and cause accsidents with other cars that dont drive on grass...
but anyway I am looking forward to this event :D:tilt::nod::thumb:

Neither me nor the race admin have the time to do a 2h enduro. That's why it's only about 30 mins (p.s - the combo is quite hard for 30 mins - let alone 2hs!). All the other races are about 20 mins.
If you want to change the layouts CTRA style to stop people cutting then you can. P.S, can you choose a car for round 1 in the Round 1 Entry list and information thread in the New Dimension Racing Events Forum in the Leagues and events section.

A 30 minute race is closer to a sprint race than an endurance race. ;)

The SC skin is the only one our Safety Car driver has ATM, and so he does all his practicing in it. I smashed into him earlier (by accident!) at South City.
It's a simple skin - but remarkably effective.

I rekon you should put the name on the skin upside down just for a laugh, that should spook the guys following it during the race. One tip for you, if you need a replacement SC driver don't ask Franky500, I remember an event where he was the SC and managed to crash into me on the slow down lap. :D

Erm...would it be possible to divide the field into 2 anyway? Because I (and a few other people I'd say) have not-so-quick PCs and Internet Speed, and a full field would cause my PC to implode...well...I'd be under 10fps anyways...On CTRA full field starts, by the time my PC gets a green light, the other cars are at T1 :D

Yep - by Round 1we'll have too many anyway I think.
Here's how I think it should basically work.
We have 20 min qualifying, and I group people into 2 groups. Group A have until 11mins, then they must instantly pit. Then Group B have their turn. Race 1 is the odd numbered people after quali (1,3,5,7,9 e.t.c), and Race 2 is the even (2,4,6,8 e.t.c). Equal points for the 2 races.
I'm not sure what to do for the endurance round. Ideas?

Please stop the Drift vs. Racing arguement now.
LFS is like a plane. Messers Wilbert and Wright invented the plane. The armies of the world realised that they could use this plane to drop things on people's heads. Other people realised that planes could be used to transport people across the world.
LFS was invented by some people called the devs. Some people realised that they could use LFS for drifting. Some realised it could be used for cruising.
Some people don't think that planes should be used for dropping things on people's heads. Some people think LFS should not be used for drifting. That's their opinion and if people want to use LFS for drifting then that's fine by me. Just like I accept that people use planes to drop things on peoples heads.

No. It is racing. Drifting is for people who are dumbass's.
Why do you say drifting is for dumb***'s? Just because its a different form of motorsport? I mean come on, I'm a racer and now and then I like to hop in the car and slide around the corners in a smooth linked fashion. It can help learn controlling the car during a slide so in a race you can be more prepared if it was to happen. Now, I don't care whether you agree with what I said or not, because I drift now and then for the fun of it. As far as saying its for dumb***'s then explain why you say something rude rather then nothing at all? (Oh and Dalek you never responded to my PM about the Head-to-Head incidents...)

I know - hasn't it. When I first thought of the idea in November time, I thought we'd get around 10-15 sign ups. I made up a set of rules and jokingly put in something about having two races if we had too many sign up. How wrong I was!!!
We're nearing 40 sign-ups already and it's another fortnight before the series starts.
It'll be an annual event, held each Feb/March time. There'll be another New Dimension Racing Event at the end of the summer, watch out for that.

A bit off topic, but I wonder if it would be possible to implement a feature that automatically changes graphics settings in the game to keep frame rates above a user defined minimum as the race progresses. So that in the beginning when the whole grid is in frame AA and AF and stuff would be turned down, but then as the race progresses these things would be turned on again to make the graphics better? Would that be at all possible?

It's a Beginners Cup. Qualy times shouldn't be that important.
Whilst I'm here I may aswell add this -
Am I the only one who is a little skeptical about having two races?
I mean one championship & two races, we're gonna be against players who aren't even in the same race! And what about teams too, they're all gonna be in the same race right?
TomMK
20th January 2008, 22:35
I don't think teams are happening. It would probably over-complicate things, and it's not really within the scope of the Beginner's Cup to introduce people to team racing.
I see your point about splitting the grid into 2 races, in that you may lose control over your position in the championship (e.g. drivers A and B, last race, A is one point ahead, A qualifies P1 and B in P2, they get put into seperate races, B can do nothing about A winning his race and therefore the cup because he isn't given the opportunity to beat A on track. With 37 registered applicants, I'd say it was unlikely more than 32 will ever turn up in one go, but if they do, what else can we do?

Agreed about not competing with a championship rival.
However, faced with the fact that we have more than the maximum 32 allowed in a race, we have to have more than one race. It was either having top half in one race and the bottom half in the other (this would be unfair as the winner of the second race would only get a maximum of half points), or the one that we've adopted.
Even if only 31 people turn up (max is 31 due to SC), then we'll still have 2 races as 31 beginners + T1 = mass disaster.
If anyone has any better ideas then contact me.

Excluding people from a tournament designed to welcome them to the community wouldn't make sense . The number of applicants has levelled off now, after the initial flurry of interest. I'd be very suprised if 31 turned up to any event, but J@kto's point remains, he has the quality of the racing to consider as well as hard limits.
@ J@tko: you mentioned splitting the top and bottom halves of the grid. If a similar number apply next time, how about two "divisions", with the better racers in division 1 and the proper beginners in division 2?
The top 3 in division 2 would be "promoted" to division 1 at the end of the series, and the top 3 of division 1 would "graduate" the LFSBC and have something to take to the major teams and say "check out my qualification from the school of LFSBC :thumb:"

So, do slower cars get a headstart in the race? I was thinking like the way it's done in some banger racing series, where the qualifying times are reversed, so that the fastest drivers start at the rear. It gives them an extra challenge, and gives slow drivers a chance to drive competitively...

After spending a week playing both CLC and CTRA, I find that I lose connection a LOT. I mean every lap. But I have no lag, and I can see everyone right up until I lose connection. It only seems to happen in relatively full servers, which is annoying...

Stefani - join the Reserves list in the LFS Beginner Cup forum, you may be allowed to join if people don't turn up. I think reserves are also welcome to join all practice events (I go to them and I'm a "last resort" reserve!)
Showing your interest now should also guaruntee you a place in the next cup.

Hi moskvich - the Beginner Cup Forum is here: http://www.lfsforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=178
Read through the stickies, then you need to join the reserves list, as all the competition places are full now. However, I think it is still likely you will get a race or 2, if you can come to the events. The first event is this weekend. Races are every Sunday.

There are 2 different types of slot that you plug a graphics card into, one is called AGP and the other is called PCI-Express (or PCI-E for short).
The card I have spare is an AGP type. From looking round on the net I believe the Dimension 5100 requires a PCI-E card :(, so its no good.

I actually have done a bit of vulunteer work at Croftt Circuit in the uk as a marshal, so I have a little hands on experience with regands to flags and racing lines etc.
will be going back to that soon hopefully.
I am interested in taking part in a championship or whatever it is you are running as I am a bit of a beginner when it comes to actual racing and all that.

We had loads of fun, with lots of close action and door-to-door racing. And the competitors learnt alot about League Racing. One of the participants, evilpimp (RP MistaTea) is now competing in the prestigious IGTC. Comgrats and Good Luck to him.
The next LFSBC season will be October time. Hope to see you there

Sign-ups for Season 2 are now open:
http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=828225#post828225
If you're still not sure whether to enter or not, here's some words from people who competed last season:
‘The LFSBC teaches you that, no matter how slow you think you are, there are always people of your ability to battle against. Racing against, and sometimes beating people who you thought were so much faster than you really feels good.’
‘LFSBC was the first league I'd entered, even though I'd been on S2 for over a year. I didn't really have enough confidence in my own abilities to enter one of the major leagues. So, I signed up, hoping to at least keep up with the backmarkers. After a couple of races though, I found that I could compete on the same level as lots of the other racers. After the series I'd found that there are other racers at the same level as me. Being able to beat others who I thought would be far better than me, was amazing. It's a real confidence booster, and is a great intro to LFS League Racing - I'll certainly be competing again.’
'LFSBC is pretty much the perfect introduction to league racing. The organisers saw something missing in the league scene - something that caters for the new players in LFS. If you're new to LFS and/or new to league racing, then the LFSBC will serve you well for you're first league experience.'
'I think that what I learned the most in LFSBC is the basic rules of racing and sim racing mostly. I liked the great racing it provided with people of my level. It's a great way to get into the LFS league racing world and will teach you how to avoid crashes and how not to make some useless mistakes so that once you get into higher level leagues you don't completly make a fool of yourself. It's really a great introduction to the LFS league racing world and was very helpfull for me. It's also a very friendly league were you make lots of friends and people help eachother a lot to get faster. Now, off course, in the end it's all about the fastest and it's very competitive at times. If you're not fast enough to get first, then aim for a level which you think is good. And that's why I think LFSBC is a great league. You get a level of racing which is almost the same as yours and instead of focusing on being the fastest you focus on giving a good race and not letting other win easily if you can't.'
If you have any questions, PM me or post in the thread linked up there

Um, which ones don't you understand?
For the CTRA ones, you need to visit a CTRA Server (either Race 1, Single Seater 1, Bump & Jump or UF-BR) and type in $password to set up an account and start earning points. For the distance one you just need to drive around online alot. For the hotlap one you need to sign in to www.lfsworld.net (http://www.lfsworld.net) and upload a hotlap, within 103% of the WR.
Attain two of those and then you can enter
But I'm not going to stop you playing golf though :tilt:

The final round of the second season of the Live for Speed Beginner's Cup is this coming Saturday, at 8pm GMT.
It's the endurance round, at Aston Historic, using GT2 cars (CTRA restrictions), for 1 hour.
We haven't really had very large grids for some of the rounds so far this season, so we want as many people as possible to come to this round, as otherwise it might become a bit of hot-lapping!
Thus, we are welcoming any Season 1 participants who want to turn up and drive to come along and join us, also any other beginners who wish to join us, so that we have a nice grid. It should be a very good race - the track is not too challenging, and you should have someone to race with. If you wish to participate, click the link in my sig (the sign-ups one (http://tinyurl.com/5p5nwr)), and sign up there. If you are a season 1 participant and want to come, then PM me :)
To find out more information about the series in general, or more about the upcoming Mini-FBM series (http://tinyurl.com/6r6u3d), visit our subforums here on the lfsforum (http://www.lfsforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=177) or visit our website (http://tinyurl.com/6ckfjd) :)
Furthermore, if you have any questions, post in this thread, in the LFSBC Q&A thread (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=36305) in the NDR section of the forum, or PM me or Dekojester (http://www.lfsforum.net/private.php?do=newpm&u=122006):)
We hope to see as many of you on Saturday as possible.

The LFSBC has now been merged with the "New Dimension Racing Challenge"; a new series based upon the successful LFSBC platform, but with two seperate classes for "Beginners" and "Non-Beginners".
Everyone races at the same time, sometimes all the cars are the same and other times the two classes use different cars.

We haven't decided on a mileage limit yet, but you would probably not be classed as a beginner, but you would be welcome to race in the experienced class.

You would probably be best off participating in the IMA Open Wheel Trophy then, because they are desperate for drivers.

I'm pretty new to this, and would love a series where it is possible to have some good race.
I'm driving fair but not so fast yet:)

The first round of LFSBC/NDRC kicks off on Saturday at Blackwood GP. If you want to sign up, it's still not too late to do so.

The calendar you find here http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=673989#post673989
Now, to do a hotlap you go to the hotlap mode in lfs (it's the one below singleplayer and multiplayer). Then you do a valid lap (=not hitting any walls etc), save the replay, go to http://www.lfsworld.net and upload your hotlap replay in the "s2 hotlaps" section.
The 103% means your hotlap must be within 103 % of the current world record. For example the wr for XFG/BL1 is a 1:33.00 by 2old4this5hit, so if you decide to do your hotlap with the XFG @ Blackwood GP you need to reach the target time of 1:35.79

STD = XFG+XRG
TBO = RB4+FXO+XRT
LRF = FZ5+RAC+LX6
GTR = FXR+FZR+XRR

I have got no idea why/when. You should ask the moderators/developers who delete these accounts.

Indeed, we had Round 2 a few weeks ago, still 6 more to go :)
Here is our sub-forum section: http://www.lfsforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=178
You need to be on server at about 6.15 GMT, so that's 9.15 your time. The races will be done by about 10.45 :thumb:

I've had S2 for a couple of years but hardly ever played it and have very limited online racing with it (1758 miles over a few years lol)
Will there be a similar beginners league like this again after this one has finished?

Most probably in the autumn. What exactly is wrong with this one? You _can_ sign up during the season as well.

I assumed you'd have to wait till a new one started rather than joining mid way... if that's the case I'd better start getting some laps in :)
