:thumb: I just recently bought my S1/S2 license and am loving the ever loving goodness out of this sim. It took me away from Enthusia
Anyway. When S2 is "finished" what will that mean?
And when "S3" is released, will it be released in full? Or will it be a alpha/beta etc? And will is cost another 12 lbs? (I'm american so I don't know where the pound key is lol ) ###
Anyway, great game, !!!

Q: When will S2 be finished?
A: Noone knows, I guess mid 2006 is a good estimate.
Q: When is S3 finished?
A: When is Duke Nukem Forever finished?
Q: Will S3 cost another 12 GBP?
A: Yes it will, it's a pretty simple system though. S1 = £12, S2 = £12 and S3 = £12. With each version, you'll have to buy the previous ones too, so S3 will be £36 total. Although you have to remember, that the liscenses only provide the content (cars/tracks, maybe some features)! With an S2 liscense you will still get the updated S3 physics/graphics/etc.

S2 will be finished (i.e. not recieve any more patches) the day S3 (demo/alpha/beta/full) comes out. Yuo could argue that S2 is finished now and only needs patching, or you could argue that BECAUSE it needs patching it isn't finished.
But yes, it will cost £12. Some of us, myself included, have already paid the extra.

When buying an LFS liscense it asks the amount you would like to pay. They have slipped in an addition 12 pounds somewhere in their liscensing.

I may be mistaken, but, didn't this all start with S1 way back in 1999? I'm not sure of the year, I think I read that back on RSC. I only found it the beginning of this year and S2 demo was released shortly thereafter. So, by my calculation of S1 taking 6 years, then we should be racing S2 for 6 years, S3 six years....... I will be freakin 81 years old when S10 comes out. I maybe shouldn't be driving out on the roads by then, but I surely will still be racing :thumb: !!!!

Didn't S1 come out in 2003? So that would mean it took four years, and S2 something like two or three years (who knows, it's not done yet), so we can safely assume that the devs achieve 30%-ish extra efficiency with each release and S3 will be available some time in 2008 :D
That's probably the best guess so far

S3 should be the final version imo. It's unrealistic to demand another 12GBP for S4. That would be 48GBP. No game is worth that much. A new released game in sweden costs, 499SEK (36GBP). After 2 months the game usually goes for 399SEK (29GBP). I am pretty sure S3 = final. S4 will never exist. But maybe a new game.

S1 might have taken 4 years, but the change from NOTHING to S1 is surely bigger than S1 to S2.
I reckon we'll see S2 Final (whatever that means) in Q1 2006, and S3 (of some sort - beta, alpha, delta?) in early 2008. But I've paid my money (through choice), and I am enjoying S2 more than any sim yet, so I'm more than happy to wait... And Scawen has already said that it is likely that 'S3 Stuff' might make an early appearance in an S2 patch later on, so we might not have to wait so long for some things.
If only we had vBookie here :D

36pounds isn't really alot if you notice how quick price tag of mainstream PC games are rising....latest PC games all cost at least 30 pounds now, by S3 comes out I wouldn't be surprised if 36pounds for S3 actually turns out to be cheaper than most of the mainstream games,AND with better quality (Totalcrap driver 5 and CMR08 anyone? XD)
But for people outside UK, whatever calculated from pounds is gonna be expensive.....maybe we should switch the base of production to thailand?

LFS will be 'finished' at S3. There won't unless the current plans change which I can't imagine, be an S4 onwards. So £36 (equiv) is LFS Full.
As for what you ask for:
dynamic tyre wear: Isn't that what we have now? I'm sure it'll get better still - heat cycles, blistering, etc one day
umpredictable change wheater: Planned, I think, for S3
some people on the track (silverstone 2004?!?): Not gonna happen :)
real life pit communication: At the moment, use TeamSpeak (or similar). Voice Chat will probably not be in LFS itself, and at least not until the final 'patches' of S3 if ever.
real damage model: What we have now, but needs improving. Current model is merely aesthetic.
etcccc: I'm sure there will be more.
We never get any "We need skidmarks" threads anymore! How come?

Those thinking about pre-paying, make sure you read the End User License Agreement before pre-paying, particularly:
2.3Payments larger than required will have the remainder on record, for future purchases. A personal status and history of payments is available on our website. 2.4Payment remainders can not be refunded.
So be aware that IF S3 were cancelled for any reason, you won't get your money back.

Two years ago I assumed S2 would come in 2004, and S3 in 2006. As the time has passed we all(including the devs) see how big project it turned to be, and how much there is done during last years and how much more to be done.
Now, taking into consideration what Scawen said about development time, it's not hard to estimate that final S3 won't come before 2008. I personally even think not before 2009.
And due to inflation, 36£ won't seem that expensive comparing to other games in 2008 or 2009 or whoknows when.
And... That additional 12£ for S3 is not final yet. We'll see what the devs will come up with.

You are correct, but Live For Speed is not a game. I totally agree with you. Thats why I bought my license.
But however. I was thinking ahead of time. When the product is finished. Altough it's a simulator I think many, many people still thinks of it as a "game".
And no one likes to drive on empty servers and we can't rely on hardcore simulatorfans forever. And 48GBP might lower the total userbase in the future.
Just look at the S1 userbase.. Oh right - THERE IS NONE! :smileypul

I remember writing a review of LFS S1 when it was first released for a now defunct gaming website, although I can't remember exactly when that was since none of that site's files are online anymore. if I had to guess I'd say late 2002 or perhaps early 2003.
[edit The join date of "March 2003" suggests that it was round that time that S1 was released since I set up the account in order to buy a copy of S1 for review /edit]
I played it for a while and then drifted off. Last Thursday I was idly surfing and discovered the S2 release and decided to buy it. I've no doubt I'll play S2 for a while and once more drift off to do other things, and one day I'll probably come back and get S3 too...
I suppose the point to all this is that personally I don't think paying £12 once every three years or so is such a bad thing, although the tracks and cars are very similar across the two releases. Consider how much content is common to all of the Gran Turismo games, personally I own them all, how many of you can say the same thing?

I compare everything to Papy's Nascar games. I had Nascar 2 was the best I could run on my old machine, until I upgraded to run NR2002. Games typically run $39-$49 in the US, so I could have paid say $39 if I got it (NR2002) when it was new. I bought it the end of last year for $15, but by then it was old. But anyways, when S2 is finally finished with all the bugs worked out of it, not the improvements, but the physics and tire bugs etc, I would concider S2 a finished game much like NR2002. Then NR2003 came out and it was really the same thing with updated opponents, and a few things added like glare, dirty windshield, but not all different than 2002. Guess what, it was another $39. With LFS each installment is only $22. S1 was fun, definitely worth the $22, but I'm not sure if I would have stayed with it. S2 now even not finished has improved dramatically with graphics, sound, physics, and content from S1 and is only another $22 (usd). As I said, I would concider it a finished game, even though it really isn't. If not for S3 coming, I would probably stick with S2 for a long time before moving to anything else. And it would have to be something far better than rFactor and GTR has to offer. S3 will add more features, hopefully better graphics, etc and will be another $22. Following along with other games, this is not unreasonable at all, infact it is a good bit cheaper than you get with other games/sims that change every year slightly and cost an additional $39.

mmm, I think I'd happily pay £12 every couple of years for an update... (S4,5,6 etc)
Think of it like 'licensing' and £6 a year isn't too bad at all (at work I pay out about £40,000 a year for various software licences)
Cue-Ball
5th December 2005, 22:38
I also don't have any problem with the current pricing model. In fact, I think it's just about right. S2 costs about $43 US which is cheaper than most retail games. This price seems about right since the game includes no manual, box, CD, etc. I think it was worth the price now, so when S2 is final it'll be even more worth it because the product will be much more polished. When S3 comes out that will add another $11 to the price. That's dirt cheap! Most expansion packs cost three or four times that much! And nobody will be forced to pay that extra amount. If you're satisfied with the cars and tracks in S2 you can continue to play them, but will still get the updated graphics, physics, etc. of S3.
Of course, I seriously doubt any licensed S2 player will forego S3 unless there is something that can equal LFS by then. I personally don't think there will be.

24 Quid. Thats what I have paid for this Gam . . . simluator. I don't think thats bad value at all. And to be honest I would even consider up front paying for S3 if the option was slightly more official. I love the fact that this is a professional enterprise from three guys working outside the grasping hands of the big publishing houses. Can I get a whoop whoop for dem three guys . . . (And anyone else who considers themselves important in the LFS dev. Community. Don't wanna upset anyone.)
Dwelling on the S4 issue, I would have thought that by the time they get around to considering an S4, the physics and graphics engines would need complete overhauls. A new entitity would be needed by then not just an add-on for S3.
I do actually like this drip feed method of releasing. I liket he fact that it gives you the feeling that the Devs havn't forgotten you. That they are plugging away in the background trying to give you the best they can for the money you paid. If all that is required for that experiance is a paltry £6 yearly subscription then I'm all for it. Sure beats Eve Online.
But thinking off the back of that would more online content prove worthwhile? Extending the experiance to off the track as well as on it. Paintshops, workshops, a marketplace (For what I have no idea. Skins maybe) . . . That last idea might be just arse talk. A half baked idea. Appologies.
Talking of Arse. Need a poo.
