View Full Version : Kegetys' Ghost Car v1.0 for S2

Another wonderful application made by Kegetys, download here (http://www.kegetys.net/lfs/). It displays a ghostcar with a path that shows acceleration of the ghostcar. See attached previews.

/ghost on - Enable ghostcar recording & playback
/ghost drawcar - Toggle ghost car drawing
/ghost drawpath - Toggle ghostcar path drawing
straight from the readme, nice and clearly :)

For those who have problems: you need to type

Maybe Kegetys would also make a night mod with pure programming (not textures editing)?

Yes, same thing happened to me and another guy. We both had nvidia cards, but since you have an ATI we can rule that out as the problem.
Please check if it only happens the first time! I gave it a second shot and it didn't crash anymore.
I don't know the error message on the blue screen, because it rebooted immidiately.
Maybe everyone who gets crashes/bluescreens/reboots can post his system specs, so we find the problem.

"A video card with Pixel Shader 1.0 support is required"
Runs fine on my machine, ATi card here.
This is great work, really enhances the fastlapping experience, and a great aid to improving laptimes, and making it more enjoyable.
I would suggest that the 'ON' options are the default position though when you run LFSG.exe, so pepole don't have to type

/ghost drawpath

Well i got this:

seems you have defined a admin pw in LFS!
try to delete the admin PW:
- go to "multiplayer"
- go to "start new game"
- delete the admin pw ("Admin password")!
or you can define the admin pw in the config file (config.cfg, in the ghostcar-folder):
[insim]
; destPort: InSim destination port to connect to
; srcPort: Source port used to receive data
; adminPass: InSim admin password
destPort=28888
srcPort=31000
adminPass=
use notepad or any other text editor to manipulate this config file!

if Keg doesnt have a job yet, LFS should definatly hire him
Its simply amazing what addons and mods he has released.
I know of him since for operation flashpoint where he made THE best features ..dxdll,spectatorscript,all his work for FDF-mod..all top quality, almost genious, work.
Now he does the same for LFS : pitspotter, slickmod, ghostcar (mmm starting to drool thinking what else he might be working on )
All for free ,just because he likes the game :)
he has no dev tools ,isnt working on a game fulltime like the devs..and still he manages to release top quality stuff (often even better then what the devs come up with)
I love u kegetys =) keep it up and u will be the most famous/loved modmaker in history :lovies3d:

Kegetys just makes amazing addons for LFS.

Everyone is talking about that LFS is the one and only, the first real realistic sim etc. and now it looks like you guys are "freaking out" about something that is part of most of the typical arcade games. A ghost car is imo more then unrealistic and should not be part of a sim .

lol, sorry, but if someone really claims that LFS is the first real realistic sim, he has some serious mental problems!
A hud with a minimap, a between tire view, starts only after green light, a reset key, analogue displays on a digital readout etc.
There are many more things in LFS that are far away from realism. Some are
still in development and maybe will be fixed in a patch/S3, some are gameplay decision that there are for a reason (shift+s e.g.)
The ghostcar is a practice instrument for singleplayer and it's as unrealistic as the current hotlap mode where you can start your hotlap over and over again, even after a fatal crash!

In a more friendly manner :D If you are quicker than the ghost car, whats the point of looking at it in your rear view mirror.
Although I agree, an excellent tool, for the new people to LFS, but maybe not for us that have been here for sometime?
Although I still agree, there is a hole here. Although you can analyze your replay's with Replay Analyzer, looking at it with a Ghost Car would be a better option, so there, being able to use Hotlaps would be absolutly great, if possible:shrug:

29th November 2005, 12:14
Within a very short period I found the ghost car really useful to show up your own errors each lap, improving on the line you take and braking poihts, allowing you to shave a couple of tenths off each lap till you get up to a good speed. It is instantly apparent where you can improve on a line, cut a corner a bit deeper or brake earlier/later.
As a separate issue, the ability to d/load a really quick alien hotlap from someone else and have the ghost car follow that would also be a good learning tool.

I always wonder at some GPL nerds blaming LFS in "arcadishness".
If there were no ghost car, anyone would need to spend more time guessing which path is better, especially at rallyX tracks, where you can go in a plenty of paths. I would need to ask somebody fast to drive ahead of me to show me the path, watch hotlaps replays (can you watch a replay the same way IRL?!! Then GPL/whateverothersim is arcade too!). This tool just saves my and someone's else time. It is absolutely not about the arcadish "press the key exactly at this point for the best result" driving style. You still need to learn to drive in a normal 'simulatory' way just with a tip (send the car 400 ms ahead and it will be almost like your friend driving ahead of you).
It is like the Orthodox Church: all that is invented by the devil is the evil and must be fought, and those, who like it or admit it, are not true believers.

I think it's great that you can't load WR replays with this programe, because as aforth mentioned that'll make it way too easy. Limited it to your own driving makes perfect sense in LFS cos it still requires someone to explore his own limitation. It's just the same as the replay analyser with the only difference that it's displayed live, you still have to use your brain in figuring out which line is better,
top notch work.

i think that's a coincident. The color changes to orange or even red if you stop to accelerate. With the FO8 in AS national it gets red in the very fast corners, but not if you shift.
I wondered about the red line on the straight, but i couldn't figure out what's the reason. And it isn't the shifting. I tried it.

maybe in the fast cars there is not much difference in the acceleration when shifting...
inCogNito
2nd December 2005, 10:55
probably. in the FO8 the line gets red in corners or uphill, even if you don't lose speed, just stopping gaining more (according to the speedometer, maybe the real speed gets slower by less than 1kph).
And maybe the same effect happens when you shift with a slower car.
maybe kegetys can tell us how the colors work :)

i think its a combination of losing acel while shifting (or actually slowing down a bit) and the fact that currently the cars velocity is just x+y so if you drive through an elevation change (like the up and down after the esses on blackwood) at a constant speed (try using the pit limiter) the line colour should change from orange when the road is still flat to red while the slope gradually increases and back to orange when youre on the linear part of the slope
so at any point where the curvature of the height of the track is not euql to 0 the line should change to red

I run LFSGrun.exe, but nothing happen after I wrote "/ghost on" and other commands, even /ghost help.
I have debugOutput=1 and my adminpass is the same as gamepass and this password I wrote to ghostcar config.

why "/ghost help" does nothing? some communicating problem between lfs and this mod? how this mod working? (coz I can't see any process in my task manager for it)

I'm also stuck on getting the damn ghostcar mod to work too. It has something to do with direct3d I think. I updated to 9.0c and everything seems to work fine, but the game can't start as long as the dll file that came with 1.01 or whatever.

EDIT: forgot to mention that your firewall may block it. When you start lfs and when you're on the track with the car, press shift+F4 and check if your firewall is trying to tell you something. This doesn't work?:
Unzip the files to your LFS folder. Make sure the file structure is like it's supposed to be.
Run lfsgrun.exe. It starts the LFS for you.
Pick track&car and go hotlapping.
When your car appears on track, press "t" and type: /ghost on
Press shift+F4 and check if you firewall is denying the connection between LFS and lfsgrun (port:28888).
It should say ghost enabled or something like that. Also note that you need to drive one full lap before you see the actual ghost. :ghostie:

theblackrabbi
6th December 2005, 05:30
I would think so. I mean of course the best way to do better is race yourself, but if you want to try and beat somebody best time it would be a cool way of doing it. Then everyone could post there time if they beat the best ghost time. Maybe it would be a hot-lap ghost chart. If anyone puts it up it's my idea ;). But it would always have the best time of that track/car on it. Maybe one day it would be a contest. See who can hold the best time and for how long. One day it could be 1:06.870 (http://www.lfsworld.net/get_spr.php?file=16743) on South city FZR, but somebody would download that ghost file, and if anyone could beat it then they would have the new record for everyone else to beat.
I'm going to make a site, and try and have this idea going, I think it would be very cool for the people that think they are the :)
SO classic / FZR
Pos Racer ST BH TH CB CC Laptime
1 biggie C w • 0:41.150
2 Sracer C w • 0:41.320
3 siurek C w 0:41.370
Then people could try and beat those if they wanted the top. Sure it's like what they already have, but it would be the ghost mod version.

First off.. very nice mod Kegetys!! 4 and heif stars out of 5 :thumb:
I'd give you all 5 but I'm getting an error when I cross the finish line that won't allow me to use it. It says:
ERROR: gcPath CreateVertexBuffer failed!
Did just as it said. Copied the files to the root of my LFS folder and executed LFSGrun.exe. It connected to both InSim and OutSim and said it was ready. The split differences show up, the /ghost switches are all enabled, using 1.01, etc. What should I try next?
Kegetys
6th December 2005, 07:09
Does it happen every time, for all tracks? If so, then my best guess would be running out of video memory... Sometimes it is also possible that the ghostcar gets recorded blank if you never cross the finish line during the lap to properly start the recording, which can happen by starting the race from the pits for example (I think :x). The CreateVertexBuffer will then fail because the size is 0 bytes. Re-driving a faster lap should fix it though.
For more information on what goes wrong you can look at the debug output, set the debugoutput setting to 1 in the config file and capture the output with DebugView (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/DebugView.html) (Set the include filter to *s2ghost* to avoid junk from other apps).

elecc
6th December 2005, 13:16
Great work!
I had some troubles using Teamspeak Overlay (http://www.teamspeakoverlay.com/) after installing the Ghost Mod, because there is a collision between the d3d8.dll used by Ghost and the dxinjection method used by TSO.
The problem is, LFS uses the d3d8.dll always, so TSO will never run.
A simple fix is to copy the attached ghost.cmd to LFS root folder and use it to start LFS in Ghost Mode. The ghost.cmd is simply renaming the d3d8.dll.bak to d3d8.dll, running LFS with /insim 28888, and after closing LFS it renames the d3d8.dll to d3d8.dll.bak.
So the d3d8.dll will never affect LFS, except you will run the Ghost Mod.
TSO, Fraps etc will work fine now.
regards, elecc

Ive used it maybe once or twice and its fun to see where I am going wrong, perhaps get me a better time. I only use it in single player mode and I think its an excellent application and really shows just what can be done with insim and outsim thingies...
I feel that a proper telementry system as you requested wont be done till S2 full or even S3 is out.
How about not turning away from something till youve tried it? I find it an excellent tool for training, particularly for new drivers, it takes nothing away from realism, many driving schools now use a system where drivers are trained with the use of a safety or pace car..
What I would like to know is, would it be possible to make this "ghost" car, physical, with collision detection, and IS it possible to swap ghost files?
Cheers, and great work... made me think is this the way to real intellegent AI.

The former isn't possible using insim/outsim (and even if it was then it would negate the whole purpose of having a ghostcar :) )
As for the latter, sure you can - just look in the "ghostcar\ghost" directory and you'll find the files necessary, their filenames explain which car/track combo they are relative to.
I've been eagerly waiting for the first ones to be uploaded from any fast drivers using ghostcar...

Well, I'm not really about the real solution, but here's what I changed:
- I deleted all the .ghost files from ghostcar\ghost folder
x in cfg.txt I turned off OutSim. I turned it on earlier from testing a different mod :)
x in the ghostcar\config.cfg file I turned on debugging
Other than that, I dunno what else to say?

What would happen when you touched? Obviously the ghost car cannot deviate from it's recorded path. It just couldn't work, even if you wanted it to. Shows what state the CRC is in if you're having to race yourself nowadays ;) :p
Kegetys

I might do it myself, but I'd hate fishing for the ghost format :)
The ghost files use the following format:
First there's a header with the following structure:
struct {
char hdr[4]; // "GHST"
float laptime; // Laptime in seconds
float sp1, sp2, sp3; // split times in seconds
int numPck; // Number of packets
int carID; // Car ID
int trackID; // Not used
} GCHEADER;
then there are numPck amount of the following structures:
struct {
float tbase; // Time in milliseonds
float x, y, z; // Position (from OutSim, in meters)
float rx, ry, rz; // Orientation (heading, pitch, roll, directly from OutSim)
float speed; // Outsim x + y velocity
} GCPACKET;
The file size must be exactly the size of GCHEADER + numPck*size of GCPACKET or the ghostcar will not be loaded.
All the motion is interpolated between the packets, so they can be saved at any rate. The mod itself currently writes them at 20FPS.
The header carID is one of the following:
0, "UNKNOWN"
1, "XF GTI"
2, "XR GT"
3, "XR GT TURBO"
4, "RB4 GT"
5, "FXO TURBO"
6, "LX4"
7, "LX6"
8, "MRT5"
9, "UF 1000"
10, "RA"
11, "FZ50"
12, "FORMULA XR"
13, "XF GTR"
14, "UF GTR"
15, "FORMULA V8"
16, "FXO GTR"
17, "XR GTR"
18, "FZ50 GTR"

When at first you don't succeed... Try, and try again... (and remember skydiving is not for you).
My guess is that they're not different, but then... I haven't even begun to check anything in game.
Ah... I see your problem... Yeah, that's going to be a tough one... But the info should be there, and it should be deductable. Even if the result is a bit funky in car behaviour.
Maybe Scawen can shed some light on this subject. Or a good search of the forums may help.
Just remember that this is the first thing I'm trying to do with games since good old SCGT... So I'm relearning Delphi as I go along.

You cant, its an LFS limitation (Only one InSim app works at a time for some reason). However you can switch between then in-game with the insim command, though its propably best to do it while in the menus so pitspotter/ghostcar will properly 'see' the race start and all cars joining.

Since the HiRes Mirrors in Patch V2 the ghostcar is not displayed in the mirrors anymore.
Would be great if this could be fixed.
I can not see it in the mirrors but I see it in the middle of the cockpickt.
It looks it does not know where is the mirror.
I hope it will be fixed. It is a very usefull tool.

Made some progress with Patch W.
Make raf file, then use raf-ghost converter found on the forum, rename new ghost file (e.g. AS1.XFR.ghost to AS1..ghost),and after that it works...but only one car per track...

Yes, I have noticed the same thing. I think it's because LFS changed how it reported the names of the cars via InSim in the latest official patch. Ghost doesn't understand the new names, so it defaults to a blank string.

Ghost car is a poor name. It´s more a "Real time 3D Holographic Telemetry set".
Great tool.:thumb:
We already have aceleration, deceleration, position in the track and path of the car in the lap.Can we have too, maybe in a corner of the screen, gear,RPM and speed?

Unfortunately Ghostcar doesn't run with Patch X anymore.
:sadbanana
If Kegetys reads this ... PLEASE MAKE ME HAPPY and update your wonderful LFS-Mod. I'm a beginner and it's a great help for me to improve my driving skills by driving with the Ghostcar.
Best regards,
Norbert

To be honest, the ghost car would be a absolutely great feature for the hotlapping mode that should be included as an official feature.

Perhaps related to why it isn't included: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1489/hard_drivin_hard_bargainin_.php

Doesn't look like he's responded in quite a while. I actually emailed him a few weeks ago and never got a reply. :\

Read the thread. It's not compatible with the current version of LFS anymore.
