Firstly WTF are you doing taking the heatsink off? Congratulations on ruining your thermal paste, and getting air bubbles in there.
That fan looks about 60 mm, which means your better off blowing on it.
In an ideal world you would make some custom brackets and drop on a nice CPU cooler, but i highly doubt you'll get it mounted.
TBH if it were my laptop i'd do nothing, and if it blows send it back under warranty OR i'd replace the stock TIM with some AS5 (Or probably Shin Etsu, depending on how adventurous i felt), if it wouldn't require too much work.
That CPU cooler was designed for a much older batch of CPU coolers, TBH that's now the sort of thing i'd slap on the northbridge.
You can't much up a temp sensor, as the core one is built INTO the CPU die, and the CPU one is underneath the CPU in the socket - if they BOTH read 70 then somethings wrong, but if you get something like a lower core temp than CPU temp it's a possibility (My old CPU did this at the start, never worked out why).
I still don't believe it *actually* loaded at 55° when OC'ed though, from my experience with laptops.

I really don't get what thought process you used to work out that removing the heat sink and then taking a blurry picture of a screwdriver would be a more sensible solution to solving your overheating issue than just stopping overclocking it and seeing what happened.
What you've done is as about as helpful as checking for a leak from a petrol silo with a lighter.

any suggestions to fix it? :shy:
Clean off then re-thermal paste the CPU
Put everything back as you found it.
Undo the stupid overclock.
Pray it all still works.
Stop trying your best to ruin a perfectly good laptop.
Job done.:):thumb:

Please tell me you didn't just take your CPU, clean off the thermal paste, put it back in and wonder why your temperatures were so high...?!
Every CPU and heatsink isn't perfectly flat - so when you put one on top of the other there are thousands of tiny air pockets stopping it making contact, as Air is a fairly good insulator, some heat isn't transferred and thus the CPU get's warm - You use a thermal paste (low heat resistance) to fill up these microscopic holes, making more heat come off the CPU into the heatsink making it run cooler. Now the trick is to use VERY little of this paste, as it is still an ever so slightly insulator - if you use too much, then you get god-awful temps (I've attached the last time i ever let my Dad put thermal paste on, and the amount i used on my old Athlon - as you have no IHS you won't need as much).
Your laptop will naturally run hot (like i said i cannot believe it loaded at 50°, that's why my 3700 did with a bigger overclock, about 50 CFM moving through the case and modded (crappy) water cooling) because of the lack of airflow - when you go and ruin the main part of it's cooling it gets even worse.
By the fact you've tried that crappy heatsink it implies you don't care if it's portable or not - if you don't need something portable, get a flaming desktop. It won't overheat as much, it will be cheaper and faster, more upgradeable, and if you build it you can spot faults so much easier.

That's my Dad, a "qualified heating engineer" using half a TUBE of AS5 for ONE application.
MOST of the thermal paste was on the poxy heatsink as well!
This is the same Dad who after getting my to take my GFX card from my PC, snatched it and immediately dropped it on my foot - he then said "If it breaks, it's your fault" and walked off :X

ok thanks guys, well let me tell you story, on Vista, some times load temps were 50-60 Celcius...now after installing XP temps NEVER above 50...well, until i mucked everything up yesterday :(...im not sure i did actually muck it up, so is this thermal paste the lovely squidgy stuff i found on the Heatsink above my graphics card?...because there was a different sort of "sementy" paste on the cpu, which i just scratched of my nail, today after coming back though, load temps are at 55
I really do want to get a desktop now, because after going to my dad's work yesterday, he has a very old computer, which i got the fan off....it was off a Pentium Pro, which was running at 100 Mhz, i dont know which computer is, but it allowed me to enter bios and it managed to be overclocked to 900Mhz...and with that "crappy" fan on it, load temps were 40-45, but there were a few other random fans, and it looks like some heat spreaders on the VGA, i guess my dad had built it a long time ago, how comes my VGA is so small, is it because it uses my RAM as memory?....because it actually has 128 mb dedicated memory, but bios allows you to put 258 more...making it around 350 something i would guess....
I really DO want a new desktop, because i just loved how fun it would be to do stuff to that computer, changing stuff, i also read over my brothers Asus motherboard manual, from a PC he has built recently...and it shows how to install everything, installing a heatsink, and i managed to successfully install the Heatsink on that computer, and load temps went to about...37, as an average calculation, with fan speeds on 100%....its just so fun, i decided when i get to University, my parents will OBVIOUSLY buy me a Custom built PC of my choice if i do good in Key Stage 3, or GSCE, i wish to buy a Core 2 Quad or Duo, as i heard they have a good overclock rate, and as for the overclock on my laptop, i got fed up with it, my laptop is a perfectly good Turion X2 as it is, and well, i am HAPPY with it!
So, when i got home, i was too overconfident, and i tried removing stuff, and well? i HATE laptops, desktops are so much BETTER, they all use the same fan input, my fan input was different, and it only allowed me to install 1 fan, so it was stupid.
So thanks guys for info...do you think i should like, sand it down or something? or should i not, i dont wanna ruin anything....i could just sand my heatsink and not my cpu?
ok thanks guys, i have now lost 5 celcius...but i am gonna study HARD for my gcse and KS3, so i WANT a good desktop :)
Thanks so much Guys

You managed to overclock a processor 9 times faster than standard and it ran cool?
As for laptops I'm not sure if taking them apart removing the thermal paste then putting them back together would improve many peoples satisfaction level.

That's just crap, for 3 reasons. First reason: No socket 8 motherboard in existence will allow a Pentium Pro to hit 900MHz (the Multi and FSB are nowhere near high enough, and even if they were, the processor would be massively unstable, and not even POST).
Second reason: The Pentium Pro was manufactured in 150MHz, 166MHz, 180MHz and 200MHz flavours, so even your original clock is wrong.
Third reason: The Pentium Pro didn't have a temperature sensor. Therefore checking core temperatures with them isn't possible.
Before making claims, CHECK YOUR FACTS!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that setting FSB and Multi in the Pentium Pro days involved shifting jumpers around on the motherboard. So even your method of overclocing wouldn't work :D

I've got an Asus manual, and it shows how to install naff all, but it does go on about "ASUS EZSTEP SUPER PROPELLER NITRO TURBO ASAP 1337HAX" technology.
I seriously can't see your parents getting you a custom PC (your looking at £1k plus) for doing well in KS3 - i might come off like a rich spoiled toff with my PC, but i've been saving for a long while with an oppresive father who won't let me spend my own money - i went massively over-budget with my Quad Core (thus the B3) as it is. I thought i was doing well getting some cash towards my bike...So thanks guys for info...do you think i should like, sand it down or something? or should i not, i dont wanna ruin anything....i could just sand my heatsink and not my cpu?

I don't say this too often but Harjun, you are a dumbass...seriously. Don't bother with the custom PC as you probably won't be able to get it together, and if you do, you will probably **** with the vcore and start melting stuff. Your better of just getting one of those pretty simple packages, something that will work, and is up to date, and don't bother overclocking it.

Dear God...
Edit:
I don't really recommend overclocking for you, you are only about 13 and you don't know about your computer a lot
Whoahoho don't overclock your notebook, its going to end in disaster
Overclocking a laptop = No no
Just leave your poor notebook as is, I mean if you want to still have a notebook tomorrow
I STILL RECOMMEND YOU NOT DOING IT!
I really think this is a bad idea
Harjun, I honestly...Totally DO NOT RECOMMEND IT
Just, whatever you do. Don't come crying to us because we showed you how to blow up your computer
My advice is simple: DON'T BOTHER!
THIS IS A REALLY BAD IDEA!
PLEASE don't even try
you really should LEAVE YOUR PC alone
don't even attempt to overclock it
You are honestly the most stupid person ever
just don't respond to this idiot
it obviously isn't a good idea to overclock a laptop
but your an idiot
[SIZE=2][SIZE=2]Harjun.
You WILL break your laptop if you try to overclock the crap out of it like you are suggesting
But those people aren't twats like you
TBH I think he'll get similar results to his overclock attempt by simply hitting the laptop with a blunt object for several minutes
Just remember, if you break your laptop, don't come crying to me
I just wanted you to STFU.
Congratulations, but in the long run you are severly shortening the life of your laptop.
Jesus christ. Stop being an idiot. Stop trying to overclock your laptop
This is just a hand full. Don't say we didn't warn you...

Please don't tell me this is the same Laptop that everyone told you not to overclock then laughed at you when you did and lied about it?
ROFL
Just to set some things straight here - on Harjun's laptop it's got an integrated graphics solution, which is holding his FPS back, so OC'ing the CPU will do nothing anyway.
I'm an overclock whore, i had a old Single Core AMD 3700 - 2.2 GHz. When i tweaked the memory (ie 40% overclock) and overclocked the CPU to 3.07 GHz (40% overclock on that, too) in SuperPi (A CPU benchmarking tool - it will show a CPU improvement far more noticeably than anything else will) and it went from 38 seconds at stock down to 27 when overclocked - that's a 40% improvement, which when you include the extra memory bandwidth and closing some extra processes.
Now Harjun overclocked by 25% and got a 75% FPS improvement. He also overclocked by 25% with no knowledge of dividers on crappy laptop RAM - my Corsair ValueRAM topped out at a 10% OC like most value ram, and as the FSB is linked to the CPU and the memory i had to set up a divider - yet he hasn't. I also had to up the vCore (even if by a little), however this is a mobile chip. Then i'm being told that this thing loads at 50°, which is odd as notebooks run notoriously hot, and i can't see overclocking helping.
I'm not buying it.

First off, Jakg I don't know what you are on, but taking off a heatsink and re-applying thermal paste is perfectly normal and 'ok'. All those 'bubbles' from the first pics are the grease from the first time he took it off.
Besides, even if it is a laptop, that is fine too. I normally replaced the grease on my old laptop every 3 months, and it would give me a 10-15C decrease in max temperature each time while gaming. But whatever he is doing with this heatsink... mehhhhh.
If done right, a smart person would take off the paste on both the heatsink and cpu contacts and make sure no residue is left over. Then reapply a small portion in the very middle and re-mount the heatsink. You only need a little bit, and the grease will spread when you re-mount the heatsink, AND the grease will spread when heat dissipates after a week or two of normal use. I am sure we all learned how glue spreads underneath paper when we were kids, yes?
To be honest, I would go through the steps of applying the new grease, and then run the computer at normal specs. Then once temps seem to be fairly good, try overclocking, or whatever it is that gets you soiled....
If the PC continues to get hot, don't consider a new heatsink, consider looking at your fan/case solution, and see if it is even getting ample cooling overall.

Use your brain Harjun.
What are you working on?...
...A PC (Well, Laptop) so you will find the paste in a...you guessed it a PC SHOP!
It means buying it though. If you listened to everyone then you wouldnt have to spend £7 on thermal paste. Nor would you (or your parents) be spending money replacing your laptop.
You parents will not buy you a One Thousand pound PC for doing well in Key Stage 3. Even if they do, please don't over clock that either. Overclocking may come across as cool and it does, a kind of geeky cool, even I want to overclock, but I have the brains, comon sense and knowledge to know better. There are about 15 pages of people telling you not to do it. Now we are only on our 2nd page of how to fix your problem, which everyone warned you would happen.
Please, tell your parents you were a little silly with your laptop, get them to take it to a PC Repair Store (as your nor your parents seem to have any idea on what they are doing) get him to right your wrongs. Forget overclocking, study hard, get a job, pay for your own PC and dont kill that one. Please Harjun, I'm being deadly serious, I want to sit back and laugh at you like I've never laughed at someone before, because...well, you deserve it. People have tried to help you before and because people here are so kind, they will keep on trying. But please, atleast know what you are doing and that WONT come with reading a few links. It comes with years of built up knowledge.
Just listen to what everyone is telling you.

im hoping for water cooling, ive heard its more reliable, and a bit better?
So, as for my laptop, do i need that arctic cleaner? it says i need it to clean of the crap from cpu and heatsink....i found a set for £7
it will drop my CPU temperature down by 10 celcius....so if my system without my HS like...barely touching my cpu, temperatures idle at 60 celcius, and loads at 70 celcius....so does that mean it will idle around 40-50...but load at 60?
also should i put some on my integrated vga and get rid of that other squiddy stuff?...and will it be permanantly stuck to my CPU and HS, or can i remove it and apply it again, and will it damage anything, and is it safe...if i get it on my hands?

Harjun, i SERIOUSLY suggest you read up on overclocking and PC's in general before declaring your "power adapter" is cool because it has a fan.
I REALLY wouldn't water cool - too much to go wrong in your hands.
And it will drop your temps more than 10° if your not using any paste at all.
And it's not permanent, and while you shouldn't get it in your eyes or open wounds it's fine on your hands.

i do have a cpu...its the 1st one, Intel Core 2 Quad...which comes with the CPU cooler, and also, i have got a psu, i ordered it last week with my case

Hang on a second. A few days ago you weren't getting a new PC at all, with the SLIM chance of getting one if you do well in your KS3 exams. Now you have a quad core system on order?
Also, if you can't understand the difference between a specialised thermal paste and superglue do you really think you should be messing with your machine at all? Methinks not. Then again, this thread has made me laugh out loud so perhaps we should just leave you to it.
For goodness sake, give it up Harjun!
BTW, it seems that Halfords have cut the prices of motherboards and cooling systems in their sale.... :)

I really don't have a clue tbh. You're completely wasting your time now.
Superglue:banghead: I ask you. Whatever next?
I hear porridge is a good substitute for thermal paste though, he could give that a go. It's has to be of a really thick consistency and must be applied whilst still hot.
PCworld didn't have my brake pads btw. They called security and escorted me from the shop when i asked.

Go to an automotive parts shop, and buy some copper shim material. Copper is an excellent conductor of heat. Cut it (using safety scissors) to size and use that instead of paste - tidier.
Don't worry about swarf and filings, as they burn up as soon as turn on the power - fail safe. Probably a couple of degrees cooler than paste too :D

This is too much, but it's a good idea of how much to aim for.
Please ONLY put it on the bit in the middle (the die) - you should only need half that amount on a CPU with no IHS. (http://www.lfsforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=38656&d=1188716425)

This is total classic.
harjun - artic silver (or any other thermal paste) is easy to apply, squeeze a little from the tube and spread it as thinly and evenly as possible, use the edge of a credit card or similar. Once covered, remount the heatsink. Note if the heatsink base doesn't have a mirror finish, it can be worthwhile rubbing in a small amount of the paste into the base of the heatsink, the wiping off the excess. This should fill in any microscopic air holes for a better seal.
Edit: slow

Then reapply a small portion in the very middle and re-mount the heatsink. You only need a little bit, and the grease will spread when you re-mount the heatsink, AND the grease will spread when heat dissipates after a week or two of normal use. I am sure we all learned how glue spreads underneath paper when we were kids, yes?
uh no doesnt quite work that way

Actually the best way it to use the amount of AS5 you need (which comes from experience) and then use the HS pressure to make a thin layer - this way you get no air bubbles, however if you use too little, or too much...
If you want to try this, get an extra tube of AS5, just to put some on and see if squeezing it out works for you, ie if you use too much/little.

anyway jakg....so should i just order that arctic silver 5....and put about a ball the size of a bb pellet on it, and then spread with a card?....so all area is covered....with a nice layer, about a fifth of a millimetre deep?....and then do the same on my heatsink right?
Jakg
7th September 2007, 17:22
*slaps Head*
Firstly, please do NOT overclock any part of your PC. If you want more speed, and you blatently don't want portability, sell the laptop and get a desktop.
If i were you i'd get some AS5, get a ball HALF the size of a BB pellet then push the heatsink on.
Don't try to measure it in any sort of layer - ideally you want enough to fill any microscopic holes and to counteract for any convex/concave-ness, which could mkae it a nanometer thick.
harjun

im not going to overclock it...and yes, here is my thread ...
http://www.overclock.net/intel-build-logs/233459-some-suggest-good-overclockable-computer.html
i decided not to go with that quad....i asked on the forums, i'm going to go with their advice, i'm just going to fix my laptop up nice and clean, put the "return to factory settings" disc back in returning it to crappy vista....and give it a good clean, and maybe sell it, or i might keep xp and use laptop around the house...etc.
as for the desktop, i've provided the link above. I guess thats quite an amazing PC for....well £500!, i already have a half decent monitor anyway, and i can buy one of those :)
are you sure i don't need to spread like, the arctic silver around?....because a half bb of that isn't going to be enough....and the cpu metal thingy which i will be putting the AS5 on, is rectangular..., so shall i put half a bb on each side?
Jakg
7th September 2007, 17:54
Erm, the PC he just specced out is a dual core E2180 - Chozart is working on the assumption that you know how to overclock - i'd go for something like an E6320 or an E6420...
You shouldn't need to spread the AS5, and half a BB WILL be enough, do not use a rediculous amount.

Erm, the PC he just specced out is a dual core E2180
What exactly is the difference between the different Core 2 processors? Any site got a nice little plain english run down of the differences?
Jakg
7th September 2007, 19:16
Dual Cores:
The E21x0 series - badged as Pentiums, but Core 2 based, "only" have 1 MB of Cache though, this only makes 5% difference in tests to 4 MB cache - overclock monsters - 800 MHz FSB
E4300/E4400 - 1 MB cache, 800 MHz FSB - Old budget overclockers.
The E6300/E6400 - 1.86/2.13 GHz, 2 MB Cache, 1066 MHz FSB
The E6320/E6400/E6600/E6700 - 1.86/2.13/2.4/2.66 GHz, 4 MB cache - 1066 MHz FSB
The E6550/E6750/E6850 - 1333 MHz FSB, 4 MB cache.
Quad Cores:
Xeon X3210 (Strictly a Q6400, however they decided to badge it as a Xeon) - 8 MB Cache, 2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB
Q6600, QX6700 - 1066 MHz FSB, 8 MB cache
QX6850 - 3 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB.
The "Q" means Quad Core, the "X" means Extreme, which means unlocked multipliers (upwards, all will go down 3x).
The FSB doesn't make too much difference, it's the speed the CPU and the RAM interface at, ie 800 MHz FSB = DDR400, 1333 MHz FSB = DDR667
Cache makes minimal difference (tests showed a 3 GHz E6600 vs a 3 GHz E2160 left the E2160 only about 5% down - not bad for half the price!).
TBH FSB is a little bit stupid - overclock whores will probably end up running a high number to use all of their memory bandwidth, ie i'm running at 1600 MHz FSB and i've "only" overclocked from 2.13 to 2.8 GHz
The important new revision of Core 2 CPU's is the "G0" stepping - these run cooler, and can take more heat - the golden example is the G0 Q6600, which is good for up to 3.6 GHz on high end air cooling.
That ok?

7th September 2007, 19:48
my cousin's laptop which he has passed over to me has an Intel Centrino Duo processor 1.7Ghz...2Gb RAM 512mb Graphics card...and its really good because it runs LFS at around 80-90 fps....but the problem is, is that it puts out...a LOT of heat, load temps are 70 celcius...i have a feeling that it is VERY dusty inside, i haven't tried cleaning it though, its an acer like mine...but a LOT better, mainly because of the VGA, Processor, and RAM....BUT!, its really cool inside, its heatsink is like mine, but for some reason, it has....TWO of them!, and it has its own little mini heatsink on the graphics card
I opened up my sister's laptop...and that has a proper IHS....with a fan on top...sort of like the blue one i have pictures of in my first few posts....its load temps are an unbeliavable 45 celcius...and that is the TRUTh...but its only a centrino DUO...with 1gb of ram, and im not sure which VGA it has....
Its soo cool, but it runs lfs at only 50fps....so i believe the thing which is letting my laptop down, is the Graphics card, also, will there be an increase in performance on the processor side....if the temperatures are at a reasonable load amount (i dunno....35-40?)....and, so, this is the summarry
My Laptop: Standard- 40fps
Overclocked to 1.9Ghz, and VGA core speed at 500Mhz- 60-70fps, on very high quality
Sisters Laptop: Standard- 50fps
Cousins Laptop: 90-100fps....
Bear in mine, i have a AMD Turion 64 X2
so....do you think its my vga letting me down?, and do you think i could possibly buy a new one, because i'm not so sure about buying my custom PC....because i guess i will have trouble making it, and by the way, do i have to put all of those resisters and what not on the motherboard ON?
So, is there anyway i could upgrade my integrated...VGA?
Thanks
Harjun
Jakg
7th September 2007, 20:02
Errr, no. The resistors are already on the motherboard....
And BTW i REALLY doubt that you get that such an FPS drop via overclocking...

the entire point of a heat spreader is to spread the heat more or less evenly across its entire surface (and to keep people like harjun from killing their cpu while mounting a cooler) so while its not necessary to cover the entire contact patch it still makes sense in terms of cooling performance

It's pressurised air. What do you think?

Looks like a basic co2 canister. Just compressed air, won't really harm anything. Works great on my old 478heatsink when I cleaned it, spray it under the keyboard cracks, real handy thing to have around when repairing older computers.

No I'm being series, I've used it to clean my printer (this was a bit of a careful task) As long as you know that theres cold compressed air coming out at a high velocity (no putting against skin, or near anything that might get harmed)

ok thank you....i sprayed a little bit on my heatsink, which is above my cpu...and for some reason its staying cold now, that stuffs well good, tempereatures are quite low, but it leaves behind, a wet substance, water i would guess?

8th September 2007, 18:14
Well if you spray it too much the cold air forms ice, which when it melts turns into water.
harjun
8th September 2007, 18:19
oh, but when i spray it a little bit, it just blows normal air out, but when i shake+spray at the same time...it blows out some other compound, which then forms water?...does that mean my can is nearing its expiry date?
dropin_biking

You're not supost to shake it...did you read the side of it first? Just spray straight or on a slight angle, you're starting to spray out the actual liquid in the container, that's not a good thing. Just quick bursts too. To prevent the can from cooling down too rapidly. Jeez, you screw up everything you touch...

No offence, but while i don't think any of us are going to win the "best school" competition i don't think your going to win this competition
Especially not by saying "i'm probably more cleverer"
EDIT - From the Wikipedia:
"The school was ranked at 24 by The Sunday Times in their 2006 Parent Power feature [1] on the best independent schools, down from 18 in the previous year. According to the Times rankings, Habs came 20th (out of 1150 schools) in GCSE rankings [2] and 72nd (out of 939) at A level [3], though this is largely due to the fact that most boys at Habs only took three A-levels, and so received a lower total score than other comparable schools. In the same year The Telegraph placed Habs in 44th place based on A and AS level results [4], and 24th (out of 2703) in their full list ranked by average score per A-level entry [5]."
The GCSE results are impressive, but WTF is with 3 A-Levels?! Even i'm doing 4...

Damn dude we've already made it as easy as we can for you. We gave you pictures, we had numerous people give different explanations (all of which would work) yet you still don't get it. If you cannot apply a little tube of silver substance to a flat surface, at the age of?... then you seriously should re-consider your weekend hobbies. How you managed to waste an ENTIRE can of compressed air is beyond me, I have a 10oz can of the stuff right beside me and its lasted months, and I use it regularly on my printer, my stereo, and my DSL modem (cat likes to wander around the computer desk) You probably screwed something up by spraying the COLD and WET LIQUID co2 onto your computer. Just give up, seriously. Take whats left of your laptop to the local computer store, get them to repair it, lock the BIOS for you, and let you carry on with your life. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I find it unreal how somebody can be so stupid and thick-headed.

Harjun, this is the last message I'll be posting in any of your threads until you learn to do your own research before coming running for help when you mess something up, despite advice not to bother.
My message is this: put the machine back together, clock it back to stock levels, and STOP. You've created nothing but trouble for yourself by overclocking it, and you're only going to create more trouble by trying to overclock the graphics. Follow Jack's advice: sell the laptop and buy a desktop, they're much better for LFS and gaming in general.

I don't care what other people say! I trust you, and know you're reliable. That's why I asked for your help. I would like you to help me reach 60-70 FPS with your methods.
I'm not interested in other's flaming what I hate reading.
So I just wanted your help, but these guys here ruined it, thanks guys!:thumbsdow

Alright all!
I've read Mikkel Petersen's 3 posted links, and I realized that Harjun doesn't really know what he does...Sorry to say but, everything is written down in that 3 threads... He asks what and how to do. If there's no answer, he asks it again and again. And he's just 14.
Once he wrote that he doesn't care if his laptop overheats...He'll buy an other one...OK, but I'm not a millionaire, I've no money to " Just buy another one "
I was working on the whole summer in order to buy this laptop. This year I'll hopefully pass my final exam and I will go to university. That's the reason I bought it. Easy to carry, you can use it wherever you want. I didn't bought it for LFS at all, I just wanted to get good FPS ingame. That's it... I won't try overclocking it, I promise.
Harjun, if you wonder why are people so "rude" to you, please read over that 3 threads you opened... You will realise why I decided as I did. I know you're angry now, but I don't want to make any damages in my brand new laptop.

^Weeerd, welcome to the good side. But in all seriousness, why even go through the bother with overclocking a laptop. The performance gain doesn't really justify all the work needed to keep it from overheating, or giving boot errors, or artifacting. Desktop PC's FTW!
~Bryan~
PS, I also LOL'd and danowat's post...then frowned when I realized if I found that funny, I need to get laid...

Worth it? Yes
Worth it on a laptop? no

Harjun, if you wonder why are people so "rude" to you, please read over that 3 threads you opened.
Nice to see you took our advice Toki.
I don't think any of us wanted to be rude or offend Harjun in any way.
It was more a case of firmly stating the case that he shouldn't attempt certain things with a laptop.
This thread (and the others) all got a bit out of hand on the pisstaking because he just wouldn't listen to the advice of people who know what they are talking about.
I feel a bit sorry for Harjun because it did seem a bit out of order the way some of us spoke to him. He is only 14 and i felt a bit cruel talking to him the way i did.
Having said that he has on so many occasions asked for advice, only to completely ignore it or obviously not read it at all that he certainly deserved some of what he got.
@Harjun. I doubt you are 'stupid' just as none of us are 'geniuses' (someone's bound to claim they are...my moneys on Jakg :p ) . Sometimes you just have to listen to what people who are more knowledgeable on a certain subject are saying to you.
You definitely have to stop making stuff up (overclocking a 100MHz chip to 900MHz for example) as you will get caught out every time. That is the start of no one taking you seriously. Why should people bother to help you if you just lie about stuff?
I hope you don't feel to bad about the way people have treated you in this thread, but you must realise that you brought it upon yourself.
Patronising lecture over ;)
Thanks for keeping us amused for so long though:D

also....think what you want about that guys picture, and believe me if you want, i'll just tell the truth and say it's not mine....and i don't put....chairlegs, or whatever that is sticking out of there on my cpus...
also, my sister had an old dell laptop, which has a P4 processorr in, of which i believe one of the only type of laptop which has P4 in, they stopped making them (overheated too much)...and it's really cool, it never worked, never switched on...so, it was just lying there, and the temptation overtook me...so i opened it all up, and its cool!, it has its own little IHS (mini one), with a little cute fan on the top. Also, the P4 is quite big i thought to fit in that laptop, the core (i'm not sure what it's called, the big silver bit), was the whole processor, on mine its just some little 1cm silver bit....but could i put that on MY laptop?...because it has all the same amount of pins, and in the same layout...:) i was just wondering, and, it probably wouldn't be much faster than my Turion, but as you guys will say no, ill leave it :)
SOrry Toki, i told you no i wouldn't help....because i didn't want to ruin your laptop

You are still messing around with the insides of computers, can i just give you a little bit of advice, go on the internet and do some research on computers and how to work and what componants are what. Researching is better then messing around with the inside of a pc and messing it up, as we have already discovered you havent a clue about computers so please just follow my advice and do some research dont follow it if you dont want to but it will save you well your parents some money.

Jesus harjun just leave pc/laptop mods to people who know what they are going.
As for trying to fit the p4 into a socket A (i think, not to sure) don't even try it, all processors have different type of mobo configurations so does not matter if it has the same pins etc etc just leave it at that.

Although quite hilarious when read in context with this thread, that picture would be a normal sight for someone who is phasechange cooling their cpu. Non-conductive paste around the pins and other components underneath the cpu is a must to stop condensation damaging them.
I assume some people will know this, but i'm just clearing it up for others. :)

Yep, condensation build's EVERYWHERE when subjecting the die to sub-zero temperatures, so everything needs covering, and insulating with foam.
