View Full Version : MPH'05 Show and Live for Speed

Fordman

Hi All,

Heard of Jeremy Clarkson's MPH'05 Car Show? Well this is happening at Earls Court, 17th November to the 20th November.

So whats this got to do with LFS :scratchch

Well, just got an email from Cyberseat, remember these from the karting Event? They have a stand there, and will be running Live for Speed on it. I have been asked to go and support Cyberseat and promote Live for Speed, so hopefully I will be there on the Sat and Sunday.

Just thought I would give you all a heads up if you are intending on going.

Regards

Fordie

Excellent news!
Make sure they have a force feedback steering wheel this time, and an unlocked copy of S2.
Oh, and a nice big sign above the screen with 'Live For Speed'

Fordie, why don't you sent Cyberseat Bob's Easy Race and Easy Road setups, so that the people who drive have a reasonable chance of staying on the road. And make sure the wheel is fixed - the fact that it could move in a big arc made driving more guesswork than artform, and that would apply as much if not more to LFS newbies :D

I will be taking all the setups I have on my USB Key. At the karting event, if you had asked, I had uploaded my GTI setup to the Cyberseat, but instead of looking, people just jumped and went :D except me :smileypul

Didn't drive the GTi there, I was trust into the XRT!!! With no force feedback, a moving wheel, shoes on, and weird movements (I played earlier before it was refined) I was a bit of a joke (as ever).

Still don't know why I got the loudest cheer when I rolled?!?!!?

I can't go this year due to having fulfilled my car-related events quota for 2005, but I went to the first show in 2003 and can recommend it. There were some great cars on display and I had a good old chat with a bloke from Radical (who insisted on telling me I could afford one :D) but the arena show is the main thing and it's great fun. It's basically Top Gear Live.

I hope you get some celebrities driving it at least (if so, try to take photos)!

If you want the colour one, then i don't think there is a higher resolution one of the current version of it, than the raw files for the LFS loading screen.

But if you are looking for the hollow black and white version, i think that can be found in vector format so you can go to any res.

hmm 2 in a A4 is prolly too big, but u try and see what suits u best.

I tried various ways, what you said above, and they either come out to squashed, or well, just doesn't look right. I played with a blank peice of A4 paper, and A4 in half, looks just about right.

no dont squash please. thats the most newbish thing u could do and im glad you didnt do it :)

respect the aspect ratio of pics. so when i say fit them in a or b, its like drop them inside a4 and resize (according to dpi of a4 u should prolly upscale) maintaining aspect ratio.

for example:

photoshop
new A4 landscape orientation 150 dpi or 300 dpi
load 4 flyers. ctrl-a each, copy paste each into A4 layers.
pics should be smaller than a4...
resize (upscale) each flyer inside a4 using shift key so u maintain aspect ratio till u maximize paper space.

or use any other techniques that exist to do the exact same. :)
if u really prefer 2 per paper then nevermind what i just said. :)

ps: a 4 flyer in a4 landscape would look like your 2 attachements side by side :) and btw, your attachments are of a lower res than even my original files? those are just previews, not the full scale A4s right?

pps: a way faster way of doing the same would be to use acdsee multiple pics printing. the prog helps u a lot by doing all the tasks for you. direct download link to trial here (http://downloads.acdsystems.com/en/acdsee.exe) (no idea if trial prints)

Wooo, slow down Kid. Speak english. Drop this there, and here, and do what :Looking_a I have used Publisher, and have rescaled accordingly to fit both on a A4. I haven;t edited the picture ( size or ratio in PSP ) well, just the Year :) but thats all I done.

if you wanna do differently please ask someone else or try something else, i have other stuff to do now, sorry. i also edited the years. assuming those thumbs are just small scale previews, your publisher efforts would also work out good (even though 2 per page is huge for small flyers).
if u go to any professional solution just hand them the original pics, and let them do the composition after u explain them your aim.
both my version and the original pics still have to be dot-gained before printing. you remind them of that.

Well, what a day. Got there at about 10.30 (it opened at 10). Looked around a bit at the nice cars. Saw Jeremy Clarkson's show (with Hamster and Needell) which was awesome. Then spent 8 hours helping at the Cyberseat stand with Fordman (who says hi, but has no internet connection tonight) at JJ72.

I think I've sold LFS to at least half a dozen people, and plenty more are very interested - lots want to check LFS.net out. And plenty of people had a go on the cyber seat - most were poor, but a few got into the 1m50's (XFG at BLGP).

Played with many cars and tracks (unlocked S2 (by Scawen) at P11 stage too!). With the cyberseats updated drivers it feels really good. REALLY good. Speed7 pedals, but only a Logitech Wingman wheel, which ruined it a bit.

Going back tomorrow (trade pass ;)), and apparently Jeremy Clarkson and Tiff Needell are going to see if they can beat the times set by Fordie and me! NO CHANCE :D

Hope to see more of you there tomorrow.

or even a dfp..

tristancliffe
19th November 2005, 22:17
They have a momo racing, but don't have the software to make it work (or something). But I've told them about the DFP, and they are going to get one, cos the 900 degree mode will be more natural for non-LFSers, as real cars have slightly more lock than 180 degrees (the Wingman's).

XFG, Blackwood.

3 mins practice, then one timed lap from a standing start.

And people who have played LFS can't enter. But that's how we found JJ72. The only person on the day (other than me and Fordie) who could beat the AI - we looked at each other and knew he was a LFS regular.

Haven't done anything in the "track editor" but there is a video about the track at: ftp://ftp.sysadmin-racing.com/videos/Topgear/ (can't get to the site atm, but I have it bookmarked so the address is right)

Download the video about "the Zonda and the Lambo" and there is the track presentation also, good pics from helicopter! I would have copy/pasted some pics here but don't know how to take screenshots from video... Though it's still hard to get the exact measurements for the widths and lengths of the track... And I think it's too big to fit... :x

2.5 hours. Thats how long it took me to do the 45 minute journey from Earls Court to Uxbridge on the way home. 'Power Cut at Earls Court control center'. God I hate public transport. Possibly more than drifters and driver aids. Why oh why can't human beings make a few trains run on time, but we can get unmanned sattelites to 'dock' with comets over a million miles away, come back and land in an area of ocean the size of the the isle of wight?!!!

Rant Over.

Show was good again, but no jezzer action unfortunately. Lots of 12 year old idiots who try to take T1 of blackwood at 100mph without lifting or braking and using full lock. Was painful to watch. And I had to congratulate them afterwards to make them feel good.

But the seat was awesome today. Really gives you a good feeling of what the car is doing, although it struggles with quick oversteer moments (e.g. FO8) as it can't react fast enough.

And who knows, maybe a show in Vienna in February, and E3 in LA in May (exams permitting!). Also, I've been asked to consider design solutions for the seat, which will be nice...

But I need a shower (or bath, yeah!), some grub, and a rest before I tell you all about it.

Fordman
20th November 2005, 21:16
Yes S2 was unlocked. Also they had sorted out clamping down the wheel, so no movement was there.

Another thing, they spend a day re-coding the motion driver, and as Tris said, this one was the nuts. If felt so real, the movement was better, the seat rose and dropped as you went up and down hills. The steering motion was not as abrupt, and there was a slight rubble as if you was on the road, and better rubbled when you went over the rubble strips.

From the Karting event, I would have to say the Seat is 110 time better

@Kid. I know there was no notice period, like myself, but a GRAND job you all done
@Tweak - They had a Momo there, got delievered Thursday, and it would not fit the steering wheel clamp. They are either going to fit it, or buy a DFP and fit this, or, they are talking about purchasing the new BRD FF Wheel, and fitting this. I mean if you pay £10,000 for a motion Sim, you want the best wheel?

But now we have a break before the next show, and all this is being developed. This show, is only the real 2nd time LFS has been put throught its paces with Cyberseat, and the vast improvement they have done in 1 month is amazing. So, as LFS was and still is a learning Curve, the Cyberseat Team are doing the Same. One thing they did say about LFS, is that it was there Saving Grace. A game that actually has so many outputs, this makes the cyberseat work so well, and they thank us all :)

Just returned form another long, thrilling, unforgettable day and here's a more detailed summary.

If there's one word that can describe the reaction of the public to the game, it'll be ESTASTIC. We charge 3pounds for a ride with gti on blackwood - one practice lap and one hotlap. And would you believe it there's a constant quene for the whole day, kids, teens, adults, grannies...you name it, although most of them are pounding into barriers hopelessly and keep doing 2minute + laps, they all do it with a big grin on their face, you know there're actually guys who keep saying "this is fantastic, this is fantastic" literally from corner to corner, it's just that exciting to them, as if they have never seen anything like it before (which is of course true!!!)

Trist, Fordman and I were talking to alot of people, who had an instant interesting the moment they see the booth and the action inside, it's a kind of feeling of "I must get it when i gets home." Some parents are kinda keen to let their children play this game, probably for their own pleasure I guess, and as we explain the physics and story behind they are just hooked to the concept.

As we watch on people driving painfully wrong, we occasionally do some demo runs to show them the racing, the cars, the tracks and so on, I think we did put on quite a show and people REALLY acknowledge the difficulty of the game and it is actually possible to be played properly.:D
(the fastest time of the hotlap challenge is 1:48, and three of us all did a 1:41 - I did it when both Trist and Fordman is left :pppp), Fordman did some solid and smooth Gti driving, Trist is going all out on the FOX, and I just picked the most spectacular combinations - FZ5 on Kyoto National, GT turbo on BL rallycross - LX6 on Aston historic reverse , and at last FO8 at SO town, did get more than my fair share of spins I must admit (not too bad as the last time I drive is more than one month ago), but throughout the show there's some nice saves and on the limit laps, the guess are certainly impressed and even more the host - you know it feels like being a star when you are call upon for a demostration run in front of such a crowd. :smileypul

It's stunning how the show attracts different kind of people, there is actually a guy from the Pagani company (YES the one that makes the Zonda), and he was proposing to have this setup one on of their promotion shows, and in all these little talks I overheard a lot of stuff, one particularly interesting one is some investor is actually evaluating the amount of advertising space on the blackwood track, and see how effective they can advertise on those virtual billboards. (I must recommand the wall at the first hairpin, cos everyone smashes in them.)

At the end of the show Fordman and Trist left, and the main crowd despired, staffs from the stand nearby start flooding over the setup and ask for "ONE MORE DRIVE PLEASE??" There was a stand selling Italian Cheese and hams, their cashier guy kept coming over and have a peep while they are at the same time packing their stuff, I then put him on the XFR and he is as joyful as a birthday kid, it's a delight to see people having so much fun with it, really it's an honor to be there representing the game.

As a sidenote I have exchanged contact with the developer of the seat and try to see if there's anything about packaging that I can do, and in the same time do some more runs with it, cos it's such a fantastic invention, ultimate heavenly experience - just can't wait till it becomes more accessible to the public. (10 grand for one isn't exactly economical.)

Here are more photos from the event, and one poorly shot video. I hope you enjoy them 1/10 as I do. :D (sorry there's really no subsitute to being their and drive the thing.)

Yes they all came up Thursday / Friday night cannot remember which one. But as we said, they was to afraid to have a go, incase of embarassment, which considering they drive anything, is quite funny.

Yes, there is more movie's to come. I have loads ( taken by me and Tris ) on my DigiCamcorder, so will sort that out asap.

But overall, LFS was a HUGH Success there. Lots of interest was generated throughout the whole weekend. While me, Tris and JJ worked hard on the stand, the others had a wonder around at the other sim stands, and they was all empty. We was by far the most popular stand of the show ( Excluding cars :) )

Obviously, the seat attracted people first, but once they had a go of LFS, they simply had to come back for more.

So my Thanks to Tris and JJ for all your help over the weekend :thumb:

That Stratos revival thing is ugly :( I saw a report about it on TV, as it was designed by a wealthy german design student. His point was that the stratos could be raced at tracks where the Porsches and Ferraris would lose their front-skirts... seems that his "new" Stratos would suffer the same fate...

Yes, Chris Hrabalek. I've met him, and he's an idiot. No talent, just a love of the Stratos. As such he thinks he can make a modern representation of it. but I also think it looks rubbish.

His Dad owns a large collection of Stratos, including the original prototype and a Group4 Safari version. His Dad, Ernst, is a knowledgable and clever chap - just none rubbed off on his son. And I think 99% of 'Fenomenon' is funded by Ernst too.

Edit - by the way, I thought I should mention that the final design work was not done by Christian, but by someone else. And the company is owned by two other people in conjunction with Christian, so expect other, better projects in the future.

Had a go in the seat (which was tight fit! Must get down the gym :schwitz:) at MPH and it was fantastic! I would have liked a harder break pedal and gear paddles in a fixed position, but I'm sure the nice Cyberseat people can tweak those kind of things.

It was also my first go on LFS - and what a way to experience it!

Needless to say, here I am, first working day after the experience and I've already bought by S2 licence ... I don't even own a PC yet to play it on :D

The seat is an excelent promotional tool, although i was too nervous of embarrasment to ask the chap to turn the clutch on :-)

Now I'm gonna be waiting with baited breath for parcel force bringing my PC!

...
I've uploaded the pics I grabbed while I was of the nice metal - didn't get any of the "stratos" after actually looking at it. Not the best treatment really. Was nice to prod the Invicta and have a look of the Gardner Douglas TD470.

First of all. Welcome to the World of LFS. Obviously our sales pitch worked, and the seat done the rest. I am glad that you really enjoyed the experience and I am really glad to see you here.

If you came on Saturday, I had the white T7R t-shirt. If you came on Sunday, I had the red ESL T-shirt on.

Hope you get a PC soon, and if you see me or any of the other S2 drivers here, please don't hesitate to ask for anything.

Once you've got all that you'll become obsessed with crazy display ideas like this one (http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=228229), so yeah, save your money! ;)

Ooh, now that's cool. I'll be using a 96in hi-def projected screen to start off with coz that's all I've got - which will be terrible for realism, but it is cool for films :)

Unless I curve the screen around me with a funky lense or something lol.

Well, they really want to do both Vienna and LA, but NOTHING is certain yet. It's quite a large cost to have a stand like that at a show, and they want to make it as cost effective as possible. As soon as I/we know, we'll let you know.

Hello all, I must say it was nice to try your game out at the MPH'05 show. It is good to see an active forum & interesting site to accompany the game too. The cyberseat was good fun -especially watching the girls bounce round on it!!:D -It was a tight fit for me though..
What was the fastest time set by the end of the day -did my time still stand? (think it was ~1:48.7) Reckon I could go a bit faster with some practice and not bogging down off the line, but I must say I found the game handling to be quite realistic and enjoyed it very much.
Have just got to get a decent computer to run it on now and then I will download it!
Cheers, Charlie.

iirc the fastest time was a 1m48 something, so it's highly likely your time was the 'winner'. Maybe Fordie or JJ can remember?

If you came first or second (which I think you will have) then you'll get an email from Cyberseat in a day or two once they've collected their wits.

Glad to see a couple of new members here resulting from the show. I hope you enjoy the demo, and pluck up the courage to make a payment and gain access to faster cars and cleaner racing (the demo is a bit of a free for all at times).

OT: I have the pedals as well and imho the squeek comes from the springs attached to the pedals. Exactly said the sound comes from the metal spring mounting inside the plastic pedal axle as the spring moves inside the mounting (sorry can't find any pic). Just put something in between the plastic and metal and it should be ok for some time at least... Best solution is to use those metal covers in diskettes, with little modifications of course :P.

But the wheel is bomb proof. i have dropped my own wheel from 2 metres (carrying in stairs above my head) and no damage, only thing is "once in week" double upshift when pressing the gear change button :)

Hmm, will try that metal things when I find some FDDs then, as so far I have tried everything I've been told so far, washing up liquid, some greese, I've cleaned it four times. But I think I scored some new pedals today, as someone I was talking to said he used to have a MS wheel, until he slammed it too hard turning and popled the bearings. So if he still has them they are mine :D
So I might see about turning them into a clutch :p

That double shift is annoying, and I get it on here. It's funny in games with replays though (such as CMR04), as it doesn't pick up the double shift, so I just watched a reply, and half way though where I had double shift it counted as one, and I was redline all the way, then my Engine cut so the car was "floating" around as there was no drive to the wheels, then I must have double shifted again, as the car then ended up in reverse for some odd reason, but the replay still showed forwards motion. Very funny to watch.

also, if you wanna get to know more of the community, may i suggest checking out one of the 'groups' of the community, be it a team, GURU or CRC, and many leagues allow you to get to know racers better.

Suggestion: give her the auto shifter (Shift G when ingame, easy to toggle on an off) and let her concentrate on the corners. ;)

I've two Momos myself, have yet to have a race against someone with them though, a few of my mates have tried LFS with the wheel, enjoy it, but won't race against me.
