Hello!

Earlier it was so easy. If you want see other people skin but don't use it, and if you dont like to pollute skins folder then you can put that skin in skins_x folder. But it was before X version.

But now we need to put that skin in skins folder. Otherwise you will not be able to see that skin if you will put that skin (jpg. format) in skins_x folder. Why it's so uncomfortable after X version?

Obviously you don't know know why this was implanted. Skins X is for Low-Res skins that you download, Skins Y is for Hi-Res skins, and Skins DDS is where skins go when you convert them when you start LFS.

yes, but plop a .jpeg skin in Skins_X and it wont work as it is only for .dds files

Thats it what i am talking about. We need to convert from jpg to DDS and then put in skins_x folder.

Put it in skins, and you'll see it. You'll also be able to select it in the garage, but that's not really all that awful, is it?

I just don't like to pollute ''skins'' folder.

not much that could be done other than manually moving them from your skins_dds to your skins_x folder after the conversion

I just don't like to pollute skins folder! :/then don't, if you had S2 you wouldn't need to faff about like this get peoples skins working

Ok.
Then what i need to do to see other people skins but do not use them? Maybe there is some converter, to easy and fast convert skins from jpg. to dds. and put them in skins_x folder?

This should work:

1) Put the jpg skins in "skins" folder
2) Start LFS - this will convert the new skins to dds format
3) Take the converted skins from "skins" folder and move them into "skins_x"
4) Delete the remaining jpg files from the "skins" folder

I thought this was the case but i tried it previously and it didnt work  This was awhile ago with std X i believe but i tried it several times with no joy.

I had found that i was redownloading all of the dSRC skins although they were all in the skinsx folder already. Luckily i had and still have a std W install and so i copy that and then patch it after making sure all of the skins i want converting are in the skins directory. then i move em to the correct install and get rid of the patched copy but this is a very clumsy method :x

Im not currently paying for hires downloads although i will be turning it on soon but as i have all of the dSRC skins already on my HDD (i made em :smileypul) i really dont wanna waste any1's bandwidth redownloading them.

If someone knows a way i would be grateful to find it out as i will soon be releasing some more team skinpacks and need to know the best way for the team to get them showing ingame without having to download them via LFSworld when they have already obtained them from our site.

I too have a question about how skins work.

Turns out when I drop JPG skins in the 'skins' folder, they don't get automatically converted to DDS. Why so?

I can only see them after creating a new color and even then it's just a COL file with the JPG texture applied to it.
Since there's no DDS whatsoever, how will other people download and see my new skin?

Download this little tool - it can convert jpgs to DDS files, letting you put them straight into the skins_x (or y) folders.

Doesn't CMX viewer still work with JPG skins as before? And for the purpose of just checking the skins out, it's faster too. As for seeing the skins of other people who race online... wait, he's a demo user, I didn't notice that at first. Oh well. Buy S2 and get the skins automagically from LFS World ;)

Does it pays something? Or it is for free?

It's free for the standard skins (512x512), but you can optionally pay £1 for 2000 "hi-res" (1024x1024) skin downloads.
