View Full Version : LFS in the news

Hi Flo, thanks for the info... do you know who ran that?
For people to use LFS to present their hardware, we do give permission but we always give a condition that the LFS logo and website address are clearly displayed.
From that picture it looks like these people are just using LFS for their own benefit, and not giving us any exposure at all.

"Airmotion_ride incorporate flight, helicopter, car racing and roller coaster simulations.
The car racing simulator is breaking new ground above all
in multi-player applications. Thanks to the excellent network
code, bumper-to-bumper duels can be staged either on the
Internet or in a local network of up to 23 players, who can drive
a wide assortment of cars all based on genuine vehicles."
They have photos of LFS in it but don't even mention it somewhere.
Sounds more like they build it. :scratchch

eheh, it's the guys from "festo" once again, there was another discussion about them in this thread where some design magazine called lfs "a race car simulator designed by Festo Corp". they seem to forget to give credit for lfs a lot ^^

Very nice to see that being mention'd :)
Though I had to lol at this comment....
Heikki Kovalainen Had a go on LFS IIRC, his time, after having no experience in LFS, was at WR pace, I believe he even beat out the World Record time set by fastest hotlappers in LFS!...
Posted by: C.Raemisch (http://club.ign.com/b/about?username=C.Raemisch) on July 06, 2008 10:20 PDT"
Heikki was 3 seconds from the WR pace, he done a 1.02 when the world record was in the 58's....He was however using a default set with r3 tyres, so it was still impressive, but nowhere near a WR. :P

Heikki was still at Renault when he tried LFS and due to copywright issues they wern't allowed to take photos or videos of him.
I can quite beleive it was him though, since fortec played a big part in his success and his beautifull Formula Renault lives in the reception area of the fortec factory....I sure as hell would be back to see it whenever I could. :D

I don't think copywrighted is the word but I don't think Renault wanted him being in photos where people could gain some sort of publicity from him, but I just remember being told he asked specificly not to have any photos taken for the sake of the F1 team.

In fact our download can be mirrored anywhere, including on a magazine's CD.
As long as the file is not changed, and no charge is made specifically for the LFS install file, it's fine to spread it.
I don't know if this is stated anywhere, but I do realise "unauthorised" mirrors appear all over the place and there is no reason for us to object.

It's a simple win-win situation for Scawen & Co.
Maybe the magazine has a printing of 20.000 copies then the LFS demo is spread to 20.000 possible new buyer and Scavier is also saving the bandwith of 20.000 possible downloads. Nice Advertising for free :)

Today, in polish program Gadżet aired on TVN Turbo channel LFS appeared in the review about Race-Pro simulator - http://race-pro.pl/en/index.htm. Famous polish racing driver said it is very nice and realistic. And he also managed to destroy clutch in - probably - FZR :D

00:20 - Girl - Nowadays this is the only simulator like this in Poland. I won't test it alone, Adam Kornacki will help me with this.
00:30 - So finally i can feel like at work.
00:37 - For the first time i'm driving with sequential gearbox, i'm trying somehow to deal with this, although i don't know the track so i will look at the map. It's shaking me all over the place in this.
00:48 - I have to admit that You can definitly see/feel stuff You don't feel on the typical sim on PC, all kinds of bumps and irregularities are easly felt. Up and down. Oh, and i've spun for the second time in this same place, so that means i'm starting to learn the track.
01:00 - and those were the tires.
01:06 - And now we are going to experience real forces/overloads. One lap from standing start. Ok, first gear with sequential gearbox. I'm almost like a pro :P. Here You go, immediately You feel declination/deviation to the back. Second, third, fourth, every gear change, damn almost like in my race car. If I remember correctly I have been shaken like that about 6 years ago in rallycross. Such forces were really present then. In real racing such forces propably weren't apparent, by that i mean bumps etc, but thanks to that we can truly feel the road and it's height.
1:47 - so braking, and You face immediatly moves towards the wheel. Every deceleration, and the weight moves towards the front and we have better steerability.
2:00 - so here i've overdone on one of (... didn't find the word, it's this blue/white thing by the track :D.). Ok, now i have long straight and that means a little bit of relax. It unleashes animal instincts in me (O.o).
2:15 - it's broken... so You can break a car in this also? I didn't know that! I have red engine light(or something like that! ^^), so that means "the end" for me...
2:24 - If i had such a thing in my house, i would gladly prepare myself in winter for the summer racing season. Trust me that this simulator gives a lot! You can really train Yourself, and in certain precentage it can recreate what really happens in real racing car. I will drive a little more now :).
Btw. It's rather amateur translation , so sorry .

I have it on, shall we say, "good authority" that the FBM physics and behaviour ARE good. I don't think it's even debatable. Real-life Formula BMW drivers would know, and I'm happy to take them at their word.
With due respect to Shaun and Darin, their regard of the FBM's physics must be taken in the context of sim racers not as Formula BMW drivers, and if their experience of the FBM left them cold then that's their experience. We know what we know. :)

But we also know that the load sensitivity of the tyres is likely flawed and that the FBM currently doesn't simulate the monoshock front suspension correctly (it's approximated with the strong front ARB, but the setup doesn't restrict you from removing that).
Just throwing that in here, I haven't actually watched the videos or anything

Kind of a poor review to be honest, I had expected more content, not just rating on 'standard setup', 'skins' and that dashboard thingy.
Yeah, we know what we know. And we surely know better than the 75 overall score.

My understanding is that the physics and handling attributes of the FBM, where they're falling short, are more than just a little masked by the fact that the driver is sitting in a motionless simulator, rather than a car, holding a G25 wheel and pressing travel-actuated pedals rather than real ones. But I would imagine that this would be the case for almost any simulator. Though we know that the simulation isn't perfect (I doubt anyone will ever achieve that), it's been met with broad approval. That works for me :)

That brings up the age-old issue of "what does the real race driver actually know?" again, though. Now obviously I don't know your sources, but ideally they should have a very extensive sim background coupled with the track experience. A racedriver who has no experience with sims whatsoever has a very hard time actually judging the accuracy of a sim since he has no reference of what to expect or what is possible and how to relate to what happens on the screen to real world behaviour. Someone like that might be baffled just by having a car behave not completely arcadish, even if the physics were deeply flawed.
That said, I now watched the LFS segment and those ratings do seem kinda pulled out of thin air. Since they didn't use custom setups, the FBM should behave quite close to the real thing (it's mainly user setups that remove the front ARB for much better handling that 'ruin' the realism). I think they were simply bored by the sounds which makes the ride much less 'exciting' and that somehow influenced the physics score, or they had a crash physics explosion or something similar non-related cause a negative impact. About the gauges jumping around... no comment.

About the show, I do believe they go further and further down on the highway to fanboy profanity land.
Last time I saw them - they were comparing steering wheels in a head to head test (which is a great idea) using the best pedal set they could find - the Fanatec clubsport something, which comes ONLY with a Fanatec wheel. How the hell is THAT a fair comparision? Or is the result going to be "best wheel you can buy is Logitech G27.... with Fanatec pedals" those things don't exactly come in 1 box you know.

One little review in one of Czech car magazines :)
And a quick translation...
Live for Speed
Only three people are developing this game. Despite that, it's one of the most complex and most realistic simulators of the world.
The game simulates aerodynamics, specific car component (over)heating, realistic engine or suspension damage, fuel consumption and its effect on car CoG, and even the tyre sidewall deformation. LFS was labelled as the best car sim of in the world by several magazines. You can drive more than 20 cars with a wide range of power and various engine and drive configuration.
Real car licenses are expensive, so the cars are not the real ones, although you will notice the similarity with Caterham, Porsche, Honda or Mini. But you can find several real vehicles there as well - e. g. the Formula BMW Sauber F1.06.
LFS is mainly a multiplayer game - you can drive in a single player mode too, but you will not experience the ability to compare your skills with other players from all over the world. LFS offers a complex database of races, driven laps, world records and a list of racing teams. Unfortunately, you cannot buy this game just "in a box", you have to download it from www.lfs.net and pay via your credit card.

Dear guys!
I would like to tell you the story of the Hungarian LFS Community's latest milestone. The National Automobilsport Federation of Hungary has just offered officially a real racing licence for the winner of the 11th Hungarian LFS Championship. I think it is a massive respect for the organizers, for the drivers, and for you too, because of this great job, you did with this simulator. Championship starts on the 3rd of October.
So we would like to thank you so much every minute you spent on bringing it to perfection.

We are really happy, this opportunity is great! This is definite recognition of the simulator. I wonder what will happen after the next patch... FIA offers a racing licence for the MOE winners? :)
The trick is, that the previous year's hungarian champion Norbi Kiss already has a racing licence, so if he competes this year, and wins, he'll have one spare racing licence :)

Speedhunters I heard you recently tried your hand at drifting online. How did that go for you ?
Haha, Yeah I have been a fan of online drifting since a few years back when I broke my ankle and was laid up for a few months. I got stuck right into Live for Speed and played that alot. Then got away from that because I was busy doing the real stuff ... Then recently at my mate Josh Allen's (WillShootForFood) house we were mostly stuck inside with the typical english weather so we started having a bit of fun online drifting.. all good for a laugh I guess.

Nicely spotted.
Can't really see the relation between LFS and the documentary's topic anyway.

In Finnish (and possibly geoblocked). It's a program called "Sports Stars" and was shown on a cable channel couple of weeks ago. This time it's about "Power Lap Tour 2010" which was arranged by this Circuit.fi facility and LFS was used as the game. Unfortunately from the program you get mostly the idea that it's proprietary software. Finns beware, the interviewer is an idiot (familiar from a certain soap opera).

I was surprised today while watching "Men of a certain age" to see them playing LFS at some Chevrolet convention. Episode is 204 (2nd season, episode 4) and the timecode is 26:00. First it was I think FO8 @ KY1 and then something else at Blackwood RallyX.
I was astonished that it wasn't iRacing since it's a Chevrolet dealers convention. In any case, nice to see someone has some taste :P

Not really "in the news", but a few years ago, the Dutch Formula 1 commentator Olav Mol joined Robert Jensen in a Dutch talking show.

They use LFS in a simulator from 11:35 min. onwards. :)

that would cost them quite abit of money, and i'd rather have them spend that money on the development of further versions of LFS..
