View Full Version : Bigger autocross area??

Boris Lozac
26th October 2005, 18:14
Can we please have in the future updates if it's not that hard to do, a bigger area of autocross? I wanted to create some local cart tracks, but the area is not wide enough for that.. Can we just have a larger space, like that whole space to be asphalt, without that trucks, grass area, etc... Just a large area, so we can create custom layouts more freely?? I think that would be great, so please if it's not hard to implement, i would really like that in S2 full..

The AutoX arena really isnt big enough? Blimey, thats some track... :o

Boris Lozac
26th October 2005, 18:44
I meant AutoX, sorry :) That large asphalt area. Well, it is really big now, but it is not wide enough to create some kart layouts. You are telling me that you would not want a larger area, so you can have more freedom in creating custom layouts, and local track areas??

Tweaker
26th October 2005, 18:55
Yes it is big, but like Boris said, it isn't wide enough. I have tried numerous times to make several official Auto-X type courses, but they just will not fit. Almost every course made requires a wider area... more like a square. I wish it could be expanded, or better yet, it would be nice if that area was improved like Blackwood was.

Boris Lozac
26th October 2005, 19:01
Exactly.. I would really apreciate this, and i am sure most of us would, it's like an track editor, but not exactly. It would also be good, if we could put more objects. I really think this is not some hastle to do, just double the width of the current area, and i would be one happy user. :)

If it helps bump this suggestion up the to-do list, I am all in favour of a wider and longer autocorss arena. Also the restriction on the number of objects, from 512 to say 1024, would have to be taken into account.

Curbs will be damn good! :D

Ofcourse as a demo racer Im not have possibility to do that but Im know it would be good.

Curb will geave real dimesion if some body make copy of some smaller (karting) track.

YES! curbs would be great! and a bigger autox arena is a MUST.. take out that whole building and make it one gigantic square. or even make it bigger and have it be an even bigger gigantic square! :D

I've got to second the request for larger autocross area. I do most of my autocross at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA and even their smallest lot is larger than either of the autoparks (it helps that the large one is an odd shape). I tried to set up the autox for my next autox in LFS and ended up creating it at 1/2 scale, and used the MRT on it instead of the street cars.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=San+Diego,+CA&ll=32.783216,-117.119987&spn=0.007631,0.009881&t=h

In the satellite image you can even see the groove from a recent autocross.

The west lot it about 700m x 250m. The two east lots are about 250m x 400m each.

One of our local autocross sites is an unused runway at the Bremerton Airport. The course is laid-out on a few of the taxiways and a section of the runway. To make courses that are used on this site I would need an area that is 2000ft x 300ft.

It would be nice to just get an area of tarmac that is about 2000ft x 2000ft with a surounding fence, and nothing more. With an area this size we could build any auto-x layout or small race circuit that crossed our mind. Reducing the polly count of the envirnment could also allow for an increase in the number of placed objects maybe?

How about an entire airport that is open to autoX? Runways, taxiways, aircraft parking areas.. Just without the aircraft  I would like that. Just make sure that one of the runways is big enough for a fully loaded 747 to take off.. Or make a emergency landing at 250 knots. :schwitz:  :scratchch

Agree, we need bigger space to freely roam around on, aswell as an increas of objects we can place :)

Couldn`t the DEV`s simply add a easy-making envoriment, like desert plain, and a HUGE asphalt area where people could roam around and have fun. Would be great, and I don`t think it would be too hard to creat eighter :)

Late to the party here, but I just picked this up recently. I bought this mostly for the autocross aspect, and am in agreement with the posters that the autocross area is too small. I'd like to simulate some of the national-level courses (the ones from the actual National championships especially) but the area provided is not sufficient.

I saw Qualcomm posted as an example, and my rough measurements on google maps of the solo pad at Heartland Park Topeka give me ~300M x 300M. It would also be nice if the surface grip could be changed: Asphalt or concrete provide vastly different grip levels.

Hey, my old thred is still alive :)

I really hope Scawen takes this into consideration if it's not a big deal and if there are no limitations of the size of some kind, maybe there are.. :(
It would be awesome for people who Autox in real life, they could replicate their own courses and it could really atract some more people to LFS, they could practice their sessions in it :)
We could make proper Top Gear track, etc.. it would really be awesome, pleeeeeaasee Scawen.. :)

Especially since LFS seems to have the best auto-x simulation out there right now. Really, there isn't another REAL sim out there that does it properly. (ie, cones give a 2 second penalty). Forza has good course designs, but lack of G25 support makes it a non-starter. GT4 had some auto-x courses, but they are of the tight, painful, DG Trials type courses like they run in Japan, rather than the flowing, top of 2nd gear courses that are more common in the SCCA, and of course the physics are way too watered-down in both cases.

I also wish that the timer could be made to start at a given start line rather than the "go on green" like it is now. If that were done, along with the larger area, then I'd be pretty happy. Typically in an SCCA event, you hit the start lights a few feet after you start rolling, so the time doesn't start immediately. In "Pro-Solo" events, there is a drag racing type start, so what we have simluated now is closer to that. The flexibility to do both would be great.

In fact, the ability to do side-by-side pro solo events would be a hell of alot of fun, actually. :scratchch You set up mirrored courses side by side, with a 300ft straight before the first turn. A bigger area could make this a possibility, and it could be a really fun element for online play.

How about making a variable slider control so that you could modify the friction characteristics of the surface... i.e., lowest setting = ice, highest setting = dry concrete.

Just make one big area, with the ability to change the surface to whatever you wish.

Id like to see the ability to put up more proper 'racing' style concrete walls and also temporary catch fencing, then we could have some 'car park' or 'airport' tracks similar to Cleveland, Edmonton or Denver :)

Also the ability to 'merge' objects into one big object, e.g a row of concrete barriers into one long wall, if this could be done then there would be no object limit :)

Its a shame that this part of the forums doesnt seem to be noticed much :(

I've a fantastic idea for an airport track. It's half real and half made-up.

It uses this airport (see if you can guess it's name!)

It uses the runway as the main part of it, then goes out into the town for a few corners, then back onto the airfield again.

An airfield would be nice - you could have a track like Thruxton (or bigger), the track itself and then the runways. Thruxton has three runways, the longest is 1.34 km long and is 50m wide. I know it's not Heathrow size (4km or so long, 85 or so wide) but large airports don't get closed for racing, St Pete, which holds IRL, is smaller than Thruxton.

They're special desert racing cars...have you ever heard of Paris-Dakar? Look at those cars. Even they get stuck a lot. Now imagine the UF1/BF1/Any other LFS car in the desert...Fail and a half :scratchch
I was thinking about the rally cars go in desert.
But anyway, dont think they will evver get so good that you stuck it the sand.

Hmm... do you think that the Topgear Hilux might be able to cope with deserts if it coped with snow :scratchch

That Top Gear Hilux could probably climb Everest if they wanted it to. It's a beast.

At a farm I used to work at, we had a Hilux. Just a standard one. And I had to go up a hill (For some menial thing, I think we had left a jacket or something at the top :D). When I say a hill, I'm talking about almost vertical, with forests and streams and no paved roads, just some narrow dirt trails. Almost a mountain. I didn't even have to use 4WD. My Boss was in the passenger's seat and he was like "WTF???". Those things are unbelievable! We should have one in LFS :D

I'm going to suggest one in the

'Cars we wanna see in patch or S3' thread.

But, It MUST be the Topgear one :)

+1 For a big Autocross area, or another location, sufficient to make for example the Montmelň Track (Barcelona GP)

dougie-lampkin
25th February 2008, 18:19
Yes, I think if it was a fairly sizeable area (say, 5 square miles, maybe 10), made solely out of a concrete ground brush, with no surrounding objects, we could at least double the object limit...

Bump for a larger area please. I'm going to be doing some autocross in the bay area (San Francisco, Oakland) and most places have parking lots larger than the current area in LFS. For example...

http://lubrify.com/autox/courses/monster_park2.jpg

Can we please at least double the existing autocross area so that more real life autocross locations can be replicated in the simulator?

I saw no disagreements on this topic

so +1 and this topic should be TEH TOPIC!

+1 How about like 3 new environments?

+1 Test Speed Course, Airport would be (TE1, TE1R)
+1 Bigger (Greater) AutoX area...(GR1)
+1 ...and choiceable for Gravel/Asphalt (for.ex. GR1/GR2)

EDIT: 4 YEARS OLD TOPIC? OH MAN! Devs would put a plan list of this one :)

Are the developers even listening?? years later and still no news.

Really need some bigger Autocross area.

The one we use locally is 380x750 meters.

Also I would like to believe, but ...
Devs do not read BUG section or reading every second post (a great example is this thread (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=1449476#post1449476)). So why they would read this section? :Looking_a

Something that would be very realistic would be a huge manufacturing facility that was closed down. It could cover a mile square and contain maybe 3 or 4 remaining buildings with 3 or 4 other buildings that have been torn down. A great deal of the facility could be asphalt that was previously used for employee parking as well as on-site storage. Grassy areas of the property as well as the area where buildings were torn down could be for non-asphalt racing. If one of the buildings was large enough, allow being able to drive inside it and set up an indoor course.

I think that would seem more realistic because you'll find closed up large factories more than you will closed up large airports.

Also:

1. Much longer barrier objects
2. Curved barriers
3. Eliminate the flying high into the air, especially when only hitting a barrier at 30 mph. This is about the only aspect of LFS that doesn't seem realistic.

Are you talking like ken block's place where he did GYMKHANA? Whatever that sport is called. Like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63FUuv5HAgs

I think that would be ideal.

True told i think devs are pretty lazy when it comes to track.
For all this time there could be tens of tracks but we have only 7.

In b4 making tracks its demanding work which takes years etc.
Its not and the only reason i can think of why there is a very few tracks its laziness

mopar93
6th November 2010, 13:49
Are you talking like ken block's place

Yes, something similar. Only more deserted. That place looks like it was still in use, somewhat. But I also vision a much larger open area where large layouts could be assembled.

Maybe being able to have junk trucks and cars along with some leftover factory objects to place around the layout would be good.

It's quite obvious there is a big desire for something like this.

Personally, I'd also like to see more race tracks as well. What we already have is very good, though. There is plenty of enjoyment to have now, because it takes a great deal of practice time to master each track. And with the number of cars available, that just multiplies the time you could occupy.

In addition to being able to place objects around the layout, picture this large deserted manufacturing facility I have in mind. Part of it is dirt and gravel, but the majority of it is asphalt and concrete. In the dirt area, it would be great to be able to build your own dirt piles. This would provide an endless number of self built rallycross layouts.

I am a new LFS player, and a bigger autocross area is really the only improvement that I would like to see at this point. Personally, I really want an accurate Top Gear test track, and I see that there are many people who want other autocross layouts that are simply too big for the current setup. Being able to test out the LFS cars on autocross layouts taken from real life would do much to enhance the game's depth, as we would be able to compare our lap times with lap times completed on the actual autocross tracks. I note that this thread is currently 7th in terms of total replies in the "Improvements" section. Here's another vote.

...
(excuse my English  - I speak French (belgian))
i played for long days and the track editor was simple but enough:
a great open square like autocross map,
some objects (not more than in LFS) but three great possibilities that I'd like to see in LFS:
1) change vertex altitude either positive or negative from a zero ground
2) different coats for ground (asphalt, snow, mud, ground ...)
3) illimited (or nearly illimited) way points
You can see more in wikipedia topic soda off road racing.
And the game allways run on my actual PC (dual core - winXPsp3)

1) change vertex altitude either positive or negative from a zero ground

I know there's a third party application allowing you to fix that, but I don't know its name.

Maybe someone else will help you on that one.
