I´m licenced. :)
I´m actually afraid og the day I´ll focus on hotlapping.
The chase for race positions and race victories will be over and be replaced by the chase for some 0.0x secs.
No more chatting/talking to others but offline all alone...
I can see that some of you spend quite some time doing offline hotlapping.
Is this better then online racing in your oppinion ?
Do you really prefere to be all alone on a racetrack chasing the clock?
I´d like to understand your motivation to hotlap for loads of hours and I´d rather see you on some server racing together with other LFS players as well.
What would your oppinion be about cancelling all offline hotlapping and include it while online racing if some day the game would have come to the stage of developement where all cutting is probited/monitored? LFSworld stats HL/WR would be adjusted as well at this time of course..
I´m just curious.

I like to make hot laps sometimes [I don't have to many HL], but if I take like 2 days hotlapping I get bored and start racing again... But yeah I like Hot Laps because we need some time all alone Huh?.

Some people have bad net connections, or may be without a connection for some time. In this case, it's either hotlapping or racing the AI. And racing the AI can quickly become a bit frustrating (huge understatement intended ;)).

The majority of people that are licensed on LFS don't even use the hotlap feature, the people that do would probably be extremely upset to see it taken away. I've never spent more then 45minutes on a WR attempt but I know some people spend ages trying to beat times. Most people semi-hotlap online and then try and make it offical offline, so what we have now is fine by me.

Exactly, I usually drive a combo online and compare my time with the WR. If it's close and I feel that I could beat (haha) or come close to that time I try a hotlap.

I had only one motivation for it, the Main Hotlap Rank.
I finished all 18 tracks, and then that was it. Now that i look on the
Rank again, i can see i'm actually not even in the top 20 anymore :)
Well, who cares...
Sometimes when we have a league race i do 1-2 laps after the race
in hl mode to see if i can make a good time, but i really only concentrate
on racing, not hotlapping...

Hotlapping FTW! I just like to be in the charts. Hotlapping also gives me an opportunity to be competitive from the moment i join a race online. Since I hate people online who obviously have no clue what they're supposed to be doing. Sometimes i just want to shout at people to practice offline, or hotlap, since just offline practice gives you no clue about what times are possible, so i recommend hotalpping and of course uploading the hotlap replays.

Whoa!! You guys have just dealt a major blow to my self-esteem. I love hot-lapping. Almost exclusively. Just me, the track, and the car. Now I find out I'm some sort of pathetic social outcast. Right, off to the corner to suck my thumb, now.:shy:

I just started getting into hot lapping, fun stuff. Always a fan of seeing my name with green lights! It's fun to race against everyone, instead of just those who have a decent net connection, have a computer that can handle big starts (which many can't), and happen to be racing on the same server I am.
But at the same time, just you, the car, the track. Don't have to worry about running into someone, just go for broke. Also no distractions, wreckers, chatters, restarters, etc.
Also, taking out hotlapping would'nt really increase the number of racers online.
You'd actually need a good reason to get rid of a very popular mode.

Hotlap/practice offline is good to develop setups. No one bothering and i can restart many times i want :razz:
Don't agree removing hotlap feature. Its nice as it is, its like a mini-game inside LFS (ranks, wrs..)

I agree :nod: hotlapping is a great way to practice and great to get away from all the noise and the chatterboxes on the multiplayer servers. And there are so many ranks to participate in it never gets old.

Me I am so not fast enugh to go for gold in Hotlapps
I do use it as a warm up to going off line and getting my mind upto raceing speed.
I also use it to practice tracks I am not to familiar with and tweeking setups that I have no idea what I am doing.
I do profere raceing and if Im not upto speed with everyone else on the track will spectate on the leaders to find the lines and brakeing etc, and then next race after it has started join in when the actual racers are past me so I do not interfere with them at all. The bonus in this is sometimes a massive accedent happens and I end up on the podium.. Bonus, I has actually one once... :D
For learning.. you really need to spectate other peoples lines once you know the track. its the only way to get your times down. (and practice of course)

Spøgelset;456049'] LFSworld stats HL/WR would be adjusted as well at this time of course..
Real life lap records are taken from qualifying, not from the race. A WR beating time in a race is not considered a valid WR. LFS is currently like this too.

Sometimes I'll start the game, join a server and for whatever reason I end up driving like I'm drunk. If that looks the case, I'll offline and hotlap for a bit. I usually come back on after 20 minutes or so when I feel a bit more confident however.

Well, I suppose this image of mine is hard to get rid of ;) Indeed I used to do a lot of hotlapping some years back. It's not like that now. I haven't put nearly as much effort into the current S2 WRs as I used to with the S1 WRs. Recently I've kind of turned my back on LFS a bit due to other interests.
Just to explain my point of view on hotlapping/racing: I've always liked hotlapping ever since I played my first racing games. It's always been interesting to me how far you can push a car on a certain track and just how quick you could go.
I respect everyone to whom racing is everything and hotlapping is nothing, my personal preference is just the other way round.

Hi,
I like to use the hotlap feature currently because I do not want to join an online game (i'm new).
Why?
Because I dont want to crash into other cars and ruin a race for everyone else. Until I can drive properly I will keep doing this.
I went online today but i only went in empty servers. A guy came along and it was fun because we were both beginners, but I dont know the rules well enough to join a full game yet.
Cheers.:)

i don't hotlap. never have and never will. i just don't see the point. i have even not entered leagues that require hotlaps to enter. i just don't get it. fair enough single player means that there is no drafting but i just don't get it.

what's not to get? It's all about who can drive fastest around the track. That's a huge part of racing, if you haven't noticed.

Ever entered a track, did some laps and thought you're quick? Well that might be true in some way but dont tell me you never checked the WR to see how far away you are. I like to have the possibility to check what is actually achievable if you spend alot of time and effort into your setup and the track, inch by inch, step by step. I love the "aha effect" when i discover something where i thought that cant be possible or i can never do it this way if you get my point ;) Hotlapping is a great feature where you can find (extend) your own limits or get close to the limits of your vehicle/ the track.

The hotlapping feature is excellent. I use it in the following ways:
I use the hotlap feature to watch people faster than me so I can learn from them;
I hotlap when I just want to focus on my time. Hotlaps replays can be used with AFS and F1PerfView for proper analysis;
I use the 'test drive' feature of the hotlap to drive the WR set, see how it feels and recreate the balance in my own set;
I use hotlaps to watch the WR tyre temps and set my cambers and pressure up so they are the same to maximise my grip;
I use hotlap to upload the laps I do for my track guides so people can watch the full lap and analyse it with F1PerfView and AFS if they want to;
I use hotlap ranks when I try a new car for the first time and want to see how competitive I am and learn how to set it up on a variety of tracks.

I really enjoy hotlapping. To me it's fun improving my time, and getting faster, when I didn't think I could. It's also nice to see your name in the ranks, after you accomplished a good time :)

Hot lapping helps me create or improve my setups which I provide to my teammates for league races. Also I have unstable connection that sometimes works perfectly but most of the time is really slow so I can not have that much fun racing on line…
Hotlapping is a great way to find at least the basic lines and break points for any car-track combo...
Even if I had a great working connection, I would still hotlap occasionally for the above reasons.

I think you are talking about practicing, not hotlapping.
To me, hotlapping is lapping over and over again specifically to get the fastest time possible. Practice is lapping over and over again to improve your cornering for racing and working on the setup. They are very close, but yet so different.

I think generally most people view hotlapping as a way to finetune their setups and get used to the track. Although technically hotlapping is not that but thats what people view them as.
But sometime it can be fun just as something different than the usual race. Just racing all the time can be a bit dull if thats all you do. Hotlapping challenges yourself without the distraction of other racers.

I only hate hotlappers that bring their hotlapping style to pub servers, with no regard for anyone in their 'hotlap lane'. Please die.
Otherwise, hotlapping is great for improving sets, knowing your lines, brake points and exit speeds. I don't want to see this feature gone, but I'd love to see the hotlapper mentality gone from pub servers :thumb:

18th June 2007, 05:42
Agreed. What people do offline isn't anyone's concern, but some people tend to treat public servers like hotlapping rinks, which is plain stupid. One time I was in a South Classic/FOX server, in a field of maybe 7 or 8, and a hotlapper with a large self-opinion (who was sort-of well-known at the time) started bitching everyone out. Why? Because we messed up his precious WR attempt by being "in his way". Like, how dare we all race each other while he's trying to set a world record, for goodness' sakes? The nerve!
You can imagine the extreme roasting he got - it was very satisfying to be a part of it :D Boy, did he get wound up when we refused to vote to end race so he could turn off the wind :tilt:

Good point. Yes I mainly hotlap to improve my driving and the setup (if a good time comes out, I save it:tilt:) But if it’s a form of competition (e.g. olfsl , teammates etc) I hotlap just for the time.:shhh::D
Well that’s what I did till I accepted the fact that my connection isn’t going to work properly… only for that season I hope…:expressio

+1 hotlapping
direct comparisons humble us average racers
btw against such a huge amount of data, the green hotlap concept is great! at the beginning, I was sorely in the red, but in terms of years, it has come quickly.
I was actually surprised when it started, but if you use hotlapping as a meter stick for your brute performance potential, you can really find out where you stand talent-wise against the others. online races against people who have the same span of times as you is the best racing you'll get, I bet. :schwitz:
CarlLefrancois
19th June 2007, 02:55
oh yes and don't forget straight-on solo mode.
20 laps of some challenging combo every day would make me much quicker in no time...
did 4 20 lap races at fern bay green reverse, xf gti using the jenek set from team inferno
my first priority was to finish the race, to make absolutely sure at each corner that I was going slow enough to guarantee I'd finish.
I figured beating 30 minutes was a possibility. the times were
30:06.77
30:06.61
30:01.07
29:52.95
the first three races one day and the last one the next morning (well 1pm)
I had no incentive to continue, well except that I bet I'd be a better racer now :D
but racing against others is too much fun. even fun to lose :nod:
