View Full Version : Gear Shift Method in Different Cars - Shifter/Sequential/Paddles

I can't find a thread on this, but is there a definitive list (for those with G25s or other shifter/clutch setups) of what type of gear shift would be used in each type of car?
I guess it's
Paddles: BF1 (+ FZ5?)
Sequential: GTR cars + MRT5 + Other Formula cars
Shifter: all others
Also should I still be using clutch pedal with sequential stick shift? I know in real life the MRT5 uses a lever on the gear stick for clutching.
Maybe this should be added to the Cars page in the LFS manual.

I guess he is not asking about the options he has within LFS, but what would be used on the track nowadays.. as in real GTR cars, do they use, sequential, paddles or stick? Do they have a clutch pedal or not? Etc.
But well I don't know the answer to those question . (Wondering myself 2 though)

auch_enne is right, I should have been clearer in my first post, I meant which should I be using if I want to be closest to simulating real-life. Obviously the cars don't have real-life counterparts but I'm sure Scawen will have had a specific shift-type in mind for each car.
In fact he has spoken about how sequential gearboxes aren't currently modelled properly, so I guess we'll find out when he gets on to that.

i always thought that if the car had road tyres you would use the H-shifter and their track counterparts (UFR XFR FXR FZR XRR) would use the H in sequential mode (FOX too). and then the flappies would be for the rest (BF1 F08 MRT).

This makes sense to me. Do you still use the clutch pedal with (UFR XFR FXR FZR XRR)? I'm not 100% sure how sequential stick shifts work. I've read on here that cars like the Aussie V8s *can* shift without clutch in higher gears, just by lifting off a little. This suggests that the rest of the time they must use a clutch pedal?
I guess LFS does simulate this because IIRC if you don't press the clutch you can still shift but you have to match revs.

You can shift clutchless if you lift off the throttle, and shift down if you match the revs, iirc. If it's different i never managed to do it right :)
In aussie V8s there are some drivers who shift without using the clutch.

i use a dfp so i don't have a h-shifter or a clutch. so anything clutch related is out of my "duristriction" so to speak. but i suppose it's all down to what your most comfortable with. i know a guy who has a g25 and doesn't use the clutch or h-shifter (don't worry franky i won't let them know it's you :p)

I'm a sucker for punishment :D I'm trying for realism over comfort!

UF1, FR, TBO and LRF other than FZ5 - H gate
FZ5, S/S, MRT, U/XFR and GTR - sequential.

And that's without using the clutch with sequential.

also the g25 has two types of sequential. the switch on the gear unit (so it's like BTCC sequential) and the flappies (ferrari enzo type) i think my discription was closer duke :p
a quick dump of the clutch could do the trick when changing no?

On a similar subject, it is a bit of a pain to switch between gated-shifter and BTCC mode.
When you switch from shifter to sequential the clutch automation settings change, but the gear "buttons" don't (The shifter registers each gear position as a button press). This means if you try to use the stick for sequential you actually just bounce between third and fourth gears, you have to reset your shift up/down buttons to correct this. Works fine for paddles though as these generate different button numbers to the shifter.
Maybe I should add this to improvement suggestions, unless someone already has.

Check out the programming sub-section for scripts. 15 min work and you can have a lot of customizable control settings behind simple macros.
For example you could easily set SHIFT+G to rotate your personal H-shifter/sequ/paddle settings so you don't have to re-assign any keys.

Cool will have a look at this!
So it looks like the consensus is:
Paddles + auto-clutch: BF1, MRT, FZ5
Sequential Stick + manual clutch: UFR, XFR, FXR, GTR, FZR, FOX, FO8
Gated Shifter +manual clutch: UF1, XFG, XR, XRT, FXO, RB4, LX4, LX6, RAC, FZ5

Sequential Stick + manual clutch: UFR FO8
I would highly doubt that if someone race tuned an old Mini he would afford sequential transmission... so H-gate for UFR. It definately looks like home-built race car based on a very old car - UF1000. And paddles for FO8, maybe FOX too depending on how old you see it. Doesn't exactly look like Formula Renault 2007 specs...

If I had my h-shifter WIP completed, I would use it for all cars other than open wheelers. I could care less what folks think the big GTRs would actually use in a racing series for real. In my opinion, the GTRs simulate many different racing series where some use sequential, yet others use h-pattern. I would be looking for fun, rather than trying to mimic a specific racing series which I don't think you can do with GTRs.
I'm in agreement that the FWD GTRs would use h-shifter IRL. To me, they are race tuned from stock as opposed to a full on race designed FZR/FXR/XRR simply based on the stock offerings.
All road cars would use h-shifter including the FZ5. Why include the FZ5 with h-shift over what seems to be majority opinion of sequential? Because if the FZ5 was real and I was buying one, I wouldn't buy it if it was sequential only. If they didn't offer an h-shift, I would look elsewhere. In high end "exotic" sports cars that have sequential, do they not offer the option of an h-pattern shifter?
Like I said, I would be after fun more than mimicking a certain racing series and being forced sequential in anything but open wheels. And I don't run open wheels often, but if I do, it's sequential stick in FOX and MRT and paddles in BF1 and FO8.
