View Full Version : Hi-Res Updates for LFS S2 alpha - kidcodea and don

KiDCoDEa

Hi guys, if you want lfs to look as best as it can right now, you should have it running on higher res textures (dont leech this if your card has like 16mb :) )
Here's the higher res skies that weren't distributed with lfs to keep size down and possible memory problems to a minimum. however, anyone with a normal decent card of 64mb onwards should have no problem running these skies (in fact maybe 32mb is enuff but i didnt test :) )

pack includes 2048x sky textures for:

Fern bay - sunny conditions
Kyoto ring , Aston, Blackwood - cloudy conditions
Westhill - cloudy conditions, complete new hemisphere (fresh out of the oven)
Westhill & Aston - evening conditions
Westhill & Aston - sunny conditions
2 UF skins 100% by don

hemis were done for S2 during dev time, coz i believed lfs could look much better using decent skies, at an early phase done by me, nuno maia, and then don ( ondrej zeman ) came along and helped, first "just" taking pics for me to build, and down the line becoming a full-fledged hemi constructor, very prolific, and that can do the whole process now (quite complex pipeline) . Clap clap for my jedi. In later hemis i just did post work. Dont ask me who what or when. its been going for over a year.
He did climb mountains, leave home, ride bikes or car to remote locations etc, looking for the perfect spot (he actually never found a perfect spot, but we and some cg magic powder could overcome that). he was as commited as me, if not more, to bringing a better looking lfs to all, besides ourselves.

you can download the update here (http://members.chello.nl/vvlaardingen/LFS.hires.textures.by.kidcodea.and.don.rar)

unpack to your lfs\data\ directory

http://pwp.netcabo.pt/kidcodea/fb.gif

this is just a quickie i have around in my hd, but don may post more pics later. im very busy now and have to do other stuff not lfs related. all the best and enjoy the only real sim next to n2003 :)

ps: thanks to eric and scawen for listening.

Sweet, downloading.

I wonder how much of a framerate drop there'll be on my rig.

Prodromoi

Very pretty. I'm impressed. And it doesn't seem to affect the framerate on my fairly modest machine (1.4GHz Duron with a 128MB graphics card).

Look cool. Downloading now.

Perhaps you could create a side-by-side comparison JPG for people? tbh I can't really remember what the sky normally looks like, I tend to concentrate on other things...

Maaaagnificent. In Westhill, the little farmland/village whatever it is up the mountainside even looks like it's 3D generated, quality of that scenery is amazing!

:( sky in FE is a bit disapointing unfortunately... since its only a few colors, its not smooth shading

Don
13th August 2005, 14:17
vivid cloudless sky is ideal for sunny jamaica.

and look at the raw file, you`ll see its smooth gradient. the problem is in lfs. kid might explain better

XCNuse
13th August 2005, 14:36
ah your right; i see now

KiDCoDEa
13th August 2005, 14:55
yes, 24bit usage of color in hemis is an old request. if it will come in later patches or not, is beyond my control. as don said, all hemis are 24bit, problem is that lfs only shows 16bit info from it :)
now thats fine for everything else except for a case of big area/big gradient, aka clean skies :)
so i understand it isnt a priority (nor should it be). if it comes it comes. even as is, i prefer this clean jamaica sky by far.

Boris Lozac
13th August 2005, 14:58
Can you guys make a screenshot comparison betwean the old and the new sky??

KiDCoDEa
13th August 2005, 15:05
twice the resolution on both axis for all - exact same skies
except two: cloudy westhill and jamaica clean. so not much to compare really :)
cloudy westhill was repeating the hemi used somewhere else with dif filename and jamaica didnt have a clean sky (had clouds) and wasnt very good imho.

XCNuse
13th August 2005, 15:34
think the devs had it pretty much right for FE in a way; rarely is it ever going to be cloudless down in the caribean; theres almost always big clouds you can see out over the ocean .. (hint hint :) )

edit:
oh one other thing; the cars still reflect the original sky ;)

Don
13th August 2005, 15:38
only the westhill cloudy. envmap for that is coming later

XCNuse
13th August 2005, 15:41
no, im saying for your fern bay sky; if you want it to be like it is in life; there should be large (tall) clouds over the water; its rarely a cloudless day in the caribean... possibly the only times it is, is after a HUUGE storm

otherwise its pretty much just cloudy out over the ocean, and a few smaller clouds over top

edit:

only in westhill cloudy, coz i didnt have time to do that. and current one works ok for now.

ive seen plenty of clear sky pics in jamaica for several beaches they have. negril etc etc. no one is saying that they always have clear sky everyday. just like when u select dawn or evening in other circuits, no one is saying blackwood england is always night etc...
and there is nothing that breathes more "summer" than a clear day sky.

If you wanna have smooth shading and get rid of those lines. This works on Paint Shop Pro... decrease the color depht to 64k and click on error diffusion when decreasing.

no, pre dithering shouldn't be used. unless u really wanna **** it up :)
hey its your game you do as you please.
much less using reductions to 16bit colorspace.
remember it gets distorted again and the dither algoritm for 2d gets all fuked.

Hello,
I 've just downloaded the new pack this morning, must I delete any files in \dds ?

I haven t the file JAskyday_E.dds in dds directory, only JAskyday1_E.dds
and in the pack, I haven t the file JAskyday_E.raw , only JAskyday1_E.raw

Thank you for your help...and sorry for my bad english ;)

Don

if you downloaded the pack today, is there dds directory with jaskyday1_e.dds ? if yes, then you dont have to delete anytihng, just unpack it to ../data/

That would make no difference whatsoever? People could still not download the official addon. Plus, some people dont want it because their comps cant handle it.

Hi,
Got a problem here.. :scratchch

Unpacked (using Winrar) the highres textures into LFS/Data and got a new folder in the DATA folder called Highrespack

The textures donīt seem to work and the bummer is that on selecting Westhill LFS goes black and gives a beeping sound. Then Windows terminates LFS...

Other tracks load up fine

Comp is AMD 3000+/512MB/N6600GT

Any advice to fix this situation is very welcome......

Well 1st of all it has been said above plenty of times that you should unzip the CONTENTS to the data folder.... not unzip into a new folder in the data folder.

Your Westhill problem sounds like something other than a texture releated problem. Try a re-install of LFS. If that doesn't fix it come back to the forums again :)

Ok, I got it. Unpacked files in HIGHRESPACK/PIC folder to DATA/PIC folder.

I found out that Westhill had stopped working, just after my feeble unzipping attempts. That made me think the two were connected.
Anyway, a fresh install did the trick. Everything fine now.. :)

Nikimere,thanks for your advice. :)

Oh and the new textures are GREAT.

that means you should put the files into the folder [lfs-root]\data\

where [lfs-root] is the directory where you installed lfs to...
