WARNING 1 : THIS IS A TEST
WARNING 2 : SKINS ARE CONVERTED THE FIRST TIME YOU RUN THE TEST PATCH - IT TAKES 2 MINUTES OR SO
Hello Racers.
Here is a new test patch W25 - a minor update with some single player improvements (but no AI improvements yet). Please see the list of changes below.
Here is some information about the major changes in this series of test patches :
- Most notably, the number of cars in a race has increased to 32.
- Also, false starts are now possible (LFS does not hold you at the start line - you must make your car go)
- Skin improvements including high resolution premium skin download service
There are various improvements related to skins including the option to download high resolution skins while online, for a small charge of £1 for 2000 downloads. The low resolution downloads are still free. We have to charge for the downloading of high resolution skins because of the increased bandwidth and the need to buy and maintain more internet servers for LFS online usage which is always increasing. Please note, we are not selling skins. The skins remain the property of their owners. Your copy is a high resolution compressed version of the original. This is a charge purely for the downloading service which allows you to see other cars' skins in higher resolution.
Downloaded skins are now always saved and shown in compressed form. The original jpg is not saved on other computers. This allows the best use of memory and the quickest load from disk.
To use your own jpg skins, or to view skins that you manually download, save them into your skins folder - you will then find them selectable in game, just as before. You can see your manually downloaded skins compressed or not compressed according to the option for local skins. There are now 4 skins folders but you can ignore them all, just forget about them and just use the skins folder as usual.
skins : you save jpg skins that you want to select in game
skins_dds : lfs uses this to store dds (compressed) versions of your local skins
skins_x : lfs stores automatically downloaded low res skins
skins_y : lfs stores automatically downloaded high res skins
NOTE : SKINS ARE CONVERTED ON THE FIRST RUN OF THIS TEST PATCH - THAT MAY TAKE 2 MINUTES OR SO
If you want to use this service, you can make a payment at www.lfsworld.net or at the main site https://www.liveforspeed.net/?page=shop
To deal with the increased memory usage, there is also a skin purging system which removes unneeded skins from your graphics card memory, some time after they were last used. You can see the list of skins in use in the Misc Options screen. White means the skin is actually in use. Black means it was recently used and is hanging around a while in case it is used again (to avoid a disc access). In the past, LFS just left all skins in memory until you changed track or weather.

+ faster loading times
- lots of additional space (jpegs + bigger dds)
- quality (double conversion, from lossy jpeg>lossy dds, important for low res)
Since skins are being kept and send as JPEGs anyway - why not make an option to disable that DDS "dancing"?

I guess they have been compressed anyway. Can a GFX card actually handle a jpg file?
Can a GFX card actually handle a jpg file?Nope. Skins have always been in "DDS" format (when compression is enabled in the settings), the difference is now they're cached to disk so LFS doesn't have to re-compress them every time it loads them.

OK, here's the explanation why we save as dds. jpg file take a very long time to load and decompress. Really, really long, like 1 or 2 seconds, you can see how long when lfs says "saving skin" after a download.
On the other hand dds files are near instant to load - no decompression or conversion is required, they are used by the card in the same format as they are saved on disk - and they use much less memory on the video card than an uncompressed jpg. The video card cannot use jpg files directly, they must be expanded to raw / uncompressed, or DXT1 / dds - there are no other possible choices for a texture in memory on a video card. The purpose of DXT1 / dds is that it is a compressed format that can be used at high speed by graphics cards. The file size is larger than jpg, that's true. It's not optimised for file size, but speed of use in memory.
We still download as jpg - partly because that's how they are stored on the server, and also to keep bandwidth to a minimum - that is important because bandwidth costs money and servers. They are saved as dds files on your hard drive for two reasons.
1) It's the best option for quick loading and allowing a lot of racers online without overloading graphics card memory. loading is sometime like 0.1 second rather than 2.0 seconds, that is the sort of difference we are talking about.
2) Some users don't want their original skins available in just as high format as they are stored on LFS World - this is to prevent skin theft. although some of you may find that unimportant, that's not the opinion of those people.
I hope that helps explain what it's about. I will not get into a discussion about what files we should use for this or that, or whether we should use 2048 skins or save as original jpgs, or what person A, B and C would like and how it should be done differently. It's done the way it is for various reasons and that's how it will stay. It's simple: if you want to see acceptable nice resolution skins online, please pay and use them - it works and it works well! But if you don't like it, don't use it. Then everyone's happy. :)
Scawen already explained that...

I guess I can suggest this here....
How about an option to vote for layouts. Say your in autocross and the layout sucks or got boring but there isnt an admin, maybe you can pull out the list or layouts uploaded on the server and click vote next to the layout name and others can hit 1 to vote to change it. Possibly vote to change the layout to one thats in your lfs folder.

I always forget to report this bug, i think it's there from the W version, it doesn't happen that often, so i always forget to post it..
Anyway, when i look in my main mirror (the central one), sometimes i don't see the cars that are close to me, when i look behind me with keys, the cars are there, like 20, 30 metters, so they should very well be displayed in the mirror, but they aren't... Maybe that isn't a bug, maybe it has something to do with mirror details? Maybe when mirror details are low, cars aren't displayed when they are not that close?
If that's the case, then it's a really bad thing, make it a black dot or something, doesn't matter, just so i know the cars are there, sometimes i don't have the time to look behind me with a key, i want to tell if someone is behind me by looking in the mirror...

On Trackmaina,(Original, Sunrise, Nations, etc.) the cars had dds as the texture file. I wanted to make more custom-like skins, but no programs were found capable to edit it. So I used the in-game texture maker (I got "not too bad results" ). Maybe implementing a feature like this shouldn't be too bad.:tilt:

i tested this in single player:
when i finished lap 1 in qualify LFS tells me my lap time is 1:00:00.00, and this result is shown in the qualify result table too. this happens even if i join (shift+p then join) the qualify after the qualify time is over.
to me this seems like a bug.
edit: actually if i shift+p and then join the qualify after the qualify time is over, i dont have the 'QUALIFYING OVER' text on the upper-right corner any more and on my first lap out i get a 1 hour lap time, then on lap two the 'QUALIFYING OVER' text reappears and i can produce no more lap times. maybe there is something wrong with player status when shift+p?
by the way what is the qualify count-down for?
edit2: tested in multiplayer and it's the same. no 'QUALIFYING OVER' text for lap 1 and the same 1:00:00.00 lap time for lap 1.

Scawen and the other devs have been working there a**'s off lately and I for one appreciate it alot. Keep up the great work.
Just one question (may be flame worthy) every time my PC DL's skins LFS had a message "CLOSED and RESUMED" coming up around 20 times in the message corner. Bug or normal?

At low FOV angles (i.e. less than 35°), the rear-view mirrors are clipped under hard braking. Pillars are similarly affected.
I've tested this using several different cars (FXO, LX4, XFR) and each exhibits the same behaviour.
I am using a 1g forward shift setting of 0.036m.

Also (unfortunately I didn't get a mpr or a screenshot of this) during the qualifying for the 24hr race yesterday I had a weird thing where I hit shift-P to go to the garage and instead of being taken there, the word "pits" came up in the middle of the screen in admin-type text. While that text was there (for a solid minute or so) none of the keys worked (tried T, ESC, shift-S, etc). After a minute it went away and I was taken to the garage. I was about to alt-tab out and kill the process, though.
There were about 27 cars on track and several more connections spectating. Not sure if this was some weird kind of join lag or what.

It's not actually a bug. It's to stop cheating on the first lap of qualifying. The first lap (outlap) must not be counted as a qualifying lap. I did that directly before but it caused another weird bug. The only way for LFS to work correctly at the moment (in a W17-compatible version) is to send over that first lap time as a long time - I chose one hour.
In a non-compatible version, I can make a special packet so the lap is counted but the time is not registered.

Not sure if this was some weird kind of join lag or what. When it said "pits" to you, that was because it was waiting for a player to connect. in the past it would have said "Can't pit - a player is connecting". But you know how many complaints there were about that. Now it registers what you want to do, and does it as soon as it's possible to do so. It's a bit strange that it lasted a minute - I would have thought such a slow joining player would have timed out by then.
Anyway, that's the reason, someone took a long time to connect.

Reporting a bug with latest test patch (w23 not w24), happend twice but when tried to replicate for 3rd time to get picture, it not happening anymore.
When loading XFGti on Blackwood Rev - the driver model was not right. The driver was standing up in the car and his chest and head were out of the roof, this was visable from all angles, also in car view was not selectable with the letter V as usual, it appeared from the drivers heads perspective, who was out of the car.
Will grab picture if happens again.

Scawen,
Is updating the dedicated server files needed for every patch, or can you indicate when you post a new test patch whether there are server sided changes?
Escape menu now looks better and is less cramped
Do you really insist on the key shortcuts to be displayed in the ESC menu? IMHO, it will never look better with the shortcuts displayed there. It just looks much better and simpler without them. And my guess is, that people who`d use key shortcuts, are a bit of "pc geeks", so they`d read those shortcuts in keys.pdf - and for the "noobs", i guess they can just press ESC and click - its not that much work for them :)
Or maybe the best idea would be to add those key shortcuts into the list of reserved keys? that list needs update anyway (missing things like shift+u, F9, F10, F11, F12 etc...also, there is still the old replay speedup/slodown key shortcut SHIFT+F2/F3 [now its just F2/F3])

With patch W24 in Multiplayer mode there is no "Replay 2" button in the "Escape Menu".
Since there is one in the "Escape Menu" of the single player mode shouldn't also be one in the Multiplayer?
Nothing much really.
Actually I didn't know if the omition was intentional (because the 2 key in multiplayer does not save the replay automatically -as it does the 1 key in single player- but prompts you for a name) or a glitch, but thought to mention that anyway. :)

Scawen, I think I have found a bug with test patch W23. I am pretty sure I haven't seen it mentioned before and I hadn't noticed it prior.
Occurred during a recent league race in which after I pitted all the tyre/skid marks disappeared and starting afresh.
I do know that the other racers online were not affected with this at the time, so it was only seen by me locally. It can be clearly seen from the replay, which I have showed with the following screen shots.
Interesting thing is that the skid marks cleared as I drove around the lap immediately after my pit, any car behind me also had refreshed skid marks while the cars on any corner ahead of me still had the original skid marks visible within the replay (refer last 2 screen shots).
Further Info:
Client = Test Patch W23 (Hi-Res Skin D/L active)

The fox thing is because your graphics card will only store 1 z-index (distance from camera) for each pixel, but the transparency means that more than one point in distance is visible. The result is that transparent objects that are over other transparent objects can result in miss-renders - it's not really LFS' fault in fairness. One day the graphics card industry will stop putting all their development into pushing more polygons and look at problems like this.

Becky so why the its possible in other games and not in LFS.Its LFS fault as it can draw other things thru the windshield but the yellow line not.

15th May 2007, 09:29
Can anyone explain why this is so and what it means? I thought skins HAD to be converted to DDS for LFS to use them. Sorry for my brain fail. Some people want to use uncompressed textures for the skins they have manually put in their skins folder. That is the Graphics Options "Car and helmet skins = full". It's not something I would recommend online due to the slower load times and greater memory usage but some people have very fast computers with a lot of graphics card memory and they want to do that to see slightly better skins (uncompressed) on their local car or their friends cars (if they manually got a skin from someone else).
Anyway, if "Car and helmet skins" is set to "full" rather than "compressed", W24 has an improvement that in that case, it will not convert the jpg skins in the skins folder, into dds skins in the skins_dds folder. That can be beneificial for people who have downloaded a lot of jpg skins and don't want to waste hard drive space creating compressed skins that they don't use.
However, automatically downloaded skins are still saved and used in compressed format regardless of that setting.

this only becomes a problem if you do these things with multiple polygon layers like lfs appears to do it (floating pit lines) if you were to apply the pitlines to the road textures things would turn out different
However, automatically downloaded skins are still saved and used in compressed format regardless of that setting.
mind if i ask for the reasoning behind not being able to turn that off if i prefer uncompressed autodownloadskins ?

It's not really the fault of the graphics card as the program can work around it by sorting all transparent objects relative to the camera and rendering the farther things back first. While not possible in all cases, it would seem like the transparent parts of the car model could always be rendered after the transparent polygons on the roadway.

Now that's complicated! Why disregard user settings? :(
If DDS is way faster in terms of loading times (no conversion) and GFX-memory (FPS), why not to quit all that mambo-jumbo with conversions, options / rules and just switch to DDS?
Price for "hi-res textures" is not final, so raise it to cover that +20% size of DDS on your servers.
Or ever better - quit that skin storing, let players send/receive their skins between themselves (automatically, when connected to server).
Just make an option to store skinks into SPR or MPR.

You need to think between the lines here, you have already answered you first question if you do. Why do you think Scawen & the dev's are going this way, I can't help but think that there is a bigger picture at play here.
Remember this is a test patch and with it comes the ability to download Hi-Res skins. Now what if DDS was to become the normal skin format. Think of the possibilities with skin layering and effects that DDS allow. But for now Scawen needs to adapt his future plans into the constraints with the game engine as it is today and see if it works and is feasible.
As for your second point, players swapping skins between themselves, it won't happen for obvious reasons that have already been answered in many other threads, it is do with content censorship, they can't allow the transfer of political & ethically sensitive material.
We as early adopters who use the test patch need to keep an open mind and go with the flow and enjoy the journey and above all be thankful that Scawen allows us to be a part of the LFS development plans. With that in mind we should also be mindful of what we put into this part of the forum, it needs to be constructive & relevant.

I think I found a bug in W24, I was on one of the south city courses. When a follow racer sent me a setup up since I didn't have one for the reverse of the track. After he sent it, I named and saved it. Then my inputs for Gas/Brake no longer worked. All the other buttons on my XBox 360 controller worked fine. Just the two triggers for gas and brake no longer did. When I went to control setup in LFS and move the sticks and hit the buttons and pulled the triggers a few times then they started working again. But everything stopped right after I saved a setup I was sent.

I'd prefer an option to have the shortcuts shown in the menus, as some other applications offer. It's the best of both worlds, when you need them, you can toggle them on. After you learn them, you can toggle them off. Then when you forget after you've had a dozen shots, you can toggle them back on..

The Kyoto textures are under the downloads/textures/tracks/kyoto section.
I am pretty sure mine are from the Kyoto Reworked files by KR|M.Kretschmar. But it could also have been from the others done by Electrik Kar. I can't actually remember.

It took me some time to find the possible reason.....
Any particular reason why total elapsed time isn't displayed any more?Yes, it was a waste of space. I got fed up seeing so many times at the top right - it was four and now it's down to 2. Total time is now only displayed now when relevant, e.g. in a time based race.
Yes, I liked Best Time onscreen to (edit: i think i just changed my mind)... However you can still see your Best Lap Time when you press CTRL+SHIFT...:hihi:

It's not that hard to do both. First send skins to LFS server (like it's done now), and then just controll the transfers with checksums. And if the user doesn't want to send the skins from his own computer, skin could be downloaded from the LFS server. That's one solution for the problem. But this is going off topic and resembles (well masked :) ) feature request.

I was originally intending to get X out on Friday 25th.
But we want it to be on the new servers, due to the increased bandwidth due to website visiting and downloading as always with a new patch and the new skins system must be well supported, but Victor's having some issues at the moment with the new boxes, hopefully to be resolved in a reasonable amount of time. Not only that but some of the remaining bugs I've been solving, like SPR OOS bugs and other weird bugs, sometimes take nearly a day each to figure out and fix - quite boring work but it's got to be done.
So the current plan is for patch X to be released on 1st of June, that will give me enough time to get it properly stable and for the community to give it a good test and hopefully our website will be fully moved by then and running on our new hardware.
Just so you can start counting back the days.

I was driving hotlaps on SO4. I hit p to pause the game. I hit shift+R to go to the replay. LFS is still responsive, but no replay is playing and the screen is blank other than the blue-ish background. I can hit escape to bring up the menu. It's a bug which is not not just appearing with W24 but just today it happend with W24 again. When I start LFS the whole screen is covered like normaly it is but the mouse or anything else isn't acting in LFS but it does in Windows in the background. The bad thing is that I don't see what I do there in the back and it is very hard to get the LFS screen away. Ctlr+Alt+Del does open the TaskManager, but in the back. Most of the times I come back into LFS with Alt+Tab but this takes sometimes quite a while when I have a lot of stuff open.
It's not reproducible. It happens from time to time.

Yep. Happens alot to me since about Patch V or so. I can reproduce it most of the time. When I run LFS from Windows, if I quickly switch to another task by clicking on another application BEFORE LFS opens, then LFS opens and displays BUT MS Windows is still the focus, as you can see WINDOWS flickering in the background even though LFS is taking over the whole screen. You have to use ALT-TAB a few times to switch to another application and hopefully LFS self minimises, making everything work again. You sort of get stuck in purgatory between LFS and windows. It's frustrating and I dunno if it's a windows thing or a LFS bug. I avoid it by NOT clicking anything after starting LFS, AND I wait until LFS in fully loaded and is the focus application before trying to switch to another task. It happens to me because I am impatient. I always try to open CSR (to use backfires) in the few seconds it takes to open LFS. Hope this helps you.

You can't change it from being shift+p but you can change it another way by assigning it to any one of the configurable keys (F1-F8 / Alt+F1-F12 or Ctrl+F1-F12) by simply typing /shift+p into the keyboard command side of that configurable key in the controls menu.
So if you assign it to just a single function key it will only require one key press, or the other way will require two keys pressed for a ALT or CTRL + function key assignment. CTRL+1 is very ergonomic.
You can then assign that function key to one of your wheel buttons if you so choose.

High res car skins are 1024x1024, high res helmet skins are 512x512. It's already possible to only use your high res skin "credits" for car skins only.

The problem is no-one has found a way to reproduce it. Maybe it's related to how you selected the track, what you had selected before, how you entered LFS, that kind of thing.
If there was a way to make it happen every time (or at least often) then I'm sure I could fix it.

Not sure on this, but can it be that skin names have a 23 character limit (including extension)? I recently had LFS complain every time on startup that "data/skins/XFR_AXP_RBW_small_l.jpg" could not be opened, and when I looked there I had a file named "XFR_AXP_RBW_small_lfsw.jpg". Renaming it fixed the warning message, so it's nothing really important.

** BUG, and odd aero behaviour **
A) When trying to save a replay right now, I saved it and went to view it and got only a black screen with sound. I could not exit LFS, I had to end the process. Repeating the same steps did not reproduce it, so I realise this post is useless but I thought I'd mention it.
B) I get a LOT of stuttering when using high-res skins. The worst case was a few seconds where a car actually paused on screen for a few seconds and the sound "skipped". That was about 3 seconds (!)
C) Cars driving over top of you on a bridge cause your car to be affected aerodynamically! See the attached replay. I come out of the pits, and come to a stop under the bridge. A car goes over the bridge a few seconds after, and you can see my car shift side to side like it was subjected to the wind of the car on the bridge above. Best seen in cockpit view I didn't know there was any interaction aerodyanmically between cars; how does this work?

Don't know if Scawen remembers me having a graphics problem with LFS - the whole games gfx would go wrong, the menus would all be white and the tracks and cars have no textures or rendering etc.

One question; When I watch the balance by the three GTR cars there's NO handicapp mass reduction, only the volonteer one? This means all the GTR's are in the same bhp/ton now, XRR and FZR weight are 1100 kg and the FXR 1120. A bug or do you now have balanced the cars "inside"?
the balance only works in multi, no change in solo.
(oups I did not see the next page)

Totally useless post: Just wanted to let Scawen know the 6DOF works very well, and the limits seem decent. I can lift my head out of the car, though. Maybe set up a 'box' or some limits for the view to move? This could be applied to the g-force movement as well, unless you want to model broken windows.. :p Good job, Scawen!

game is crashing when whatching replay after about 2-3sec. (W25) OOS Error
It might help to attach the replay. And what version of LFS was it recorded with?

I cannot play W24 replays anymore, LFS just stucks but isn't crashed (ESC works). Replays recorded with W25 are playable.

With TrackIR, I cannot move my head sideways when using a custom view. Also, when I move my head outside the TrackIR tracking area the view immediately snaps back into the center position. It would be better if it would stay where it was last (When I move my head just a bit too much the sudden view jumping is a bit annoying)

TrackIR 6DOF: excellent, I have been waiting for this for a long time! The subtle movements of the eyepoint as you lean into a corner or shift in your seat as you look around really help to bring the game alive. Nice work and thank you Scawen.

In single player when running AI, if the AI crashes and attempts a repair, the warning messages 'Can't reset - would cause a yellow flag' and/or 'Can't reset - could hit another car' are sometimes displayed repeatedly, as shown in the attached screengrab. Several of these messages seem to be displayed for each 'AI repair' and the messages are sometimes displayed over and over again, lap after lap even if there are no new 'AI repair' messages. It can be very distracting.

I don't really mind if any SPR from an older version goes OOS, except for hotlaps - it's important that all S to W24 hotlap replays should be playable. If hotlaps are OOS then I must fix it.
But anyway I am surprised that your other ones are going OOS, I would have expected them to go OOS only if you make a pit stop.

The 6DOF works amazingly well. I understand this isn't a simple plug n play feature by scawen as this seems to work better than MS Flight Simulator :D The leaning is correct when you look behind, which makes the whole experience seem quite realistic. The only problem is the clipping, but I don't think there's any justification to try and correct that for such a small user base. If your TIR is set up correctly you shouldn't be clipping during normal use. For example, I usually sit back a fair bit from my desk, so in the FOX my view was clipping through the intake when I looked behind. All I had to do was roll my seat forward a bit ;)
Congrats scawen, and THANKS for a wonderful feature. My TIR will now get a workout :D
ps: leaning though corners is fuuuun :D
pps: I've uploaded a quick video to youtube demonstrating 6DOF in LFS, check it out here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJxbI3uAXG0).

A problem with the AI and car reset rules: if two or more AI crash in close proximity to one another (e.g. they crashed into one another) and need to reset, they can't. Car A can't reset because car B is nearby and vice versa. The result is that they get stuck in an endless cycle where each prevents the other from resetting and they remain stuck where they are for the duration of the session. Some of the tight corners in South City can end up being a veritable wreckers yard as more and more AI crash into their immobilized brethren on each successive lap.
This is what seems to have caused the stream of 'Can't reset' warning messages mentioned in a previous post.

hotlaps where the driver has reset his car (spacebar) from V0 version (at least) go OOS when the reset comes (I've noticed this on my hotlap at BL1 with the XRR)....

This is what seems to have caused the stream of 'Can't reset' warning messages mentioned in a previous post.Would it be possible to save an SPR for me where this is happening? Then I'll be able to work the situation out and try to get a solution. The less cars in the replay, the better for me. Or even just a screen shot of two stuck cars would be good enough. Just so I can see the situation in simple form.

Any old replays with a reset or pit stop won't work - including hotlaps. Reset and pit stops are done a different way now.
Technical explanation : In fact the SPR can now store "multiplayer packets" if I make it do so in each case, that's how the reset is done now and that's why you can change your control settings during an SPR and do the live settings, etc. It will make various things easier to include in single player mode in future.

Car reset is unrealistic and ruins races. I guess its enabled in single player because there is no limit of lfs-installations. More than one people can use the single-player mode at the same time, because no online connection is needed to play it. Its just a copy protection, because if u wanna disable car reset u must go online. If a car wrecked its wrecked it must drive with the damage, and if it total wrecked and no more moveable is the race over for the car, every other behavior is just no fun. What a magic auto-repair on track....

Can confirm with your MPR replay.Only background, connection list and no sound.ESC worked for me as well.
I am using W25 now.
EDITED: - Bug report - MPR replay cant play
I joined W23 host(24 train server #1). Saved replay and when tried to play it I get the same problem as Kamo. When the replay is loaded I am stuck at background screen,no sound, connection list visible only and thats all.ESC work at least.
