View Full Version : FO8 Racing League
Gentlefoot
23rd April 2007, 11:39
Gentlefoot is considering launching a new league exclusively for the FO8 or possibly dual Formula with the FOX. Format to be decided. The launch will come after patch X is released. This will mean the potential for 28 grid slots!
Please vote in the poll the format you would be most interested in. Any additional comments/suggestions would be most welcome.
MODS: Sorry - just noticed this is in the wrong Forum. Any chance it can be moved to Leagues and Events? Sorry.

Where do I sign up??
Do you mean FO8 and FOX on same grid, like a single seater Le Mans style multi-class race? That would be interesting on a 28 man grid.
I would also go for races over 1 hour. Anything under one hour and two things happen:
1) There is less patience amongst racers leading to public server style "optimistic" attempts to pass. Long races seem to help this, as would disallowing shift-s and reset.
2) Under 60 minutes and there is no strategy - it is no stops. Over the hour mark and depending on the track, the tyre usage and pit lane length mean that 1 stop or no stop can be used.

Yep - FO8 and FOX on same grid Le Mans style - exactly :)
Some good points there Stormy - most welcomed.

started in the FOX league with the CRC before it collapsed due to poor turn out (I was there for all races till the end) and was really enjoying the open wheeled racing. Rules on overtaking must be adheared to in these cars as any kind of contact can be race ending :(

I voted FO8 only, Fortnightly 1 hour races(though i'd be happy to race over an hour) and yes, I would definitely sign up :thumb: today..without hesitation:D

I checked both single class and dual class, as I woud be interested in both. Given a choice between those two, though, I think I'd chose dual.
Good points raised by Storm. I agree with him so I voted for "over 1 hour races". Not sure what you mean exactly with "league system", but I checked that too, assuming it meant championships with precise rules.
Where do I sign up? :D

Gentlefoot, the League Of The Americas just finished it's second FO8 season, and I have one suggestion for you: DO NOT CHOOSE Fern Bay Green! :thumb:
Other than that, try to choose wide open tracks that provide for plenty of maneuvering room due to the aero-push you get with the FO8.

would love an FO8 only league and over 1 hour races would be good as you get proper races in them that arent spoilt by impatient b*st*rds!! and it will give a chance for strategy to play a part as well.
i only voted 'i might sign up' because it depends on where i am and what im doing at the time... as a uni student im moving around a lot atm and nothing is certain for more than a few months.... otherwise i am definitely up for this league

I hope that doesn't mean you are ruling out South City - just not Classic! One of the most enjoyable OWRL races I have had so far is SO Town and I was stuck behind someone for 30 laps - loved it.

Once I've decided the format I will request people to enlist as a provisional entry. All those people who enter will then be polled as to which day/time the events will take place. That way we maximise entries. Then everyone on the provisional list will be able to decide to put in a formal entry to the competition depending on the day of racing.
Gentlefoot

OK the poll seems to have run it's course so this is the format I propose.
Dual FOX and FO8 entries (14 entries per race in each class);
Overall Championship rank and separate FOX and FO8 ranks;
Championship entries unlimited;
1st come first served basis for event entry with reserve list;
12 Events (1 season) held fortnightly;
Races approx 75mins in length (pit stop will be required at most circuits);
League system and points for each event;
Entrants will be able to drop their two lowest scores so they can miss up to two races per season without losing points;
Independent judicial system for decisions and appeals;
Warnings, penalties and possible bans for bad driving;
Approx Start Date: May/June 07 or when patch X is released.
Schedule of events to follow along with detailed rules, guidance and grievance procedures. One trial event will be held prior to the start of the season to allow rules and procedures to be clarified and set in stone ready for season 1.
Please sign up for the provisional entry list (by confirming your entry in this thread) and you will be eligible for voting rights to decide the time and day for the events. Please state what car you wish to drive. If everyone says FO8 then the mixed grid idea will have to bite the dust.
Ofcourse if I recieve less than 30 entries the championship will be abandoned.
So hope I get lots of sign ups :)

please please dont mix the grids though... the two cars arent close enough for it to be worthwhile. i raced on a combo yesterday with fo8 and fox and it was absolute carnage... the fo8's are just so much faster!! and if you get loads of entries (which looks likely) split it into two servers, one for fox and one for fo8

If people cause 'carnage' they will recieve penalties. The idea of thre mixed grid is for it to be like Le Mans. Drivers have to be aware that there are slower cars about. Occasionally there are accidents. It all adds interest. I love the idea as do many others and it makes the series different to every other FO8 league. On my server last night the two classes were running together no probs.
So sorry dude, but we're sticking with it :)

Competition in the FO8 class is a lot tougher. People like Storm_cloud, AndyGer and quite probably papafant and Grandhuber may enter. In addition I will only enter if I can't get a full grid for an event. :)

Looks like some tough competition in the FO8 class and some of the Fox runners I recognise from the STCC servers, I think were all thinking alike as this is an ideal grounding for the New STCC Licence servers can't wait to get started :thumb:
I was racing with Papafant the other eve on the Z30 server in the MRT around SO City Classic he was running some very low 50's and dipped into the 49's once in a while very impressive, also got my PB down to 50.75 that eve after less than 180 laps for that combo.
I know Aston from conedodgers and redline but the KY curcuits I have very little experience bordering on none so it's back to practice and hope to see you all on track tonight ;)

OK I’ve been having some more ideas about how I will be running this league. I will add an LFS section to my website www.gentlefoot.com. This part of the website will have all sorts of LFS stuff in it. In particular, the indepth multimedia track guides will be available. These include textual descriptions, telemetry data, drive bys with voice overs and stills of turn in and apex points. I’m part way through the first of these and I will create guides for the tracks that we’ll be competing at in the Gentlefoot Championship. They are track and car specific and will initially only be available for the FO8. The setups used for the track guide analysis will also be available.
Also there will be a Gentlefoot Championship forum for pre and post race discussion and judicial decisions. I will also create a rules section. This will again be multimedia and will describe what is and isn’t acceptable in this competition. We have to be aware that there will be two classes on track. When an FO8 laps a FOX they must keep in mind the fact that even though the FOX is a lap down it could be the lead FOX or even the FOX championship leader and must be treated with respect.
Grievance procedure will be defined here too. I as Race Director will make decisions regarding penalties for inappropriate driving. You will be able to appeal my decisions and my father (who is a magistrate and has competed in karting) will be familier with the rules and apply them as he sees fit in the event of an appeal. I myself will only take part in races where I cannot fill a grid so it shouldn’t be too often that there is a conflict of interests here.
The rules that I will define will form the ‘statute’ if you like for the Gentlefoot Championship. All decisions will be recorded over time and this will build into ‘case law’ and these decisions must be followed when making later judgments. Where decisions are overturned by appeal, the appeal decisions will be followed. Case law will be reffered to when the ‘material facts’ of an incident are the same. This should ensure consistency in decisions but also allow some flexibilty by way of appeal.
The site will also include race results and championship standings.

I really look forward to the trial event, I think it will be important to see "in practice" how it will work out with the rules and the different types of cars on the track.

This is sounding better by the post :)
It appears to be far more like what im used too at the GPC nKPro championship where a very professional approach has been taken, which resulted in,as you called it, a gentelmans race series.
Of course there are always a few incidents that the stewards have too look into, but in 3 seasons only one incident made it to the Court of Appeal (of which I'm a member), which goes to show that if you run a league in a certain style you end up with a certain style of racer participating.
Best of luck with this GF, it looks like it's going to be a great league:thumb: I cant wait for it to begin:)

There really is no reason for T1 incidents to happen with any size of grid, as long as people take extra care and have a bit of self control.
A hefty punishment for causing a blatantly stupid T1 accident should help to keep people in check imo.

Thanks for the vote of confidence mate. I hope that the approach I take to judicial results in consistent decisions but still allows flexibility. As for appeals what I don't want is for people to appeal decisions every time as a matter of course. I may even require a small deposit to lodge an appeal (about £10) which will be refundable if the decision is overturned. That should ensure people only appeal if they feel they have a strong case.
Also, before any decisions are made both parties will get their chance to explain things as they saw them unlike many leagues where the plaintiff makes a complaint and the decision is made without consulting the other driver. This is something that has annoyed me in the past. All decisions will refer back to the rules which the driver may or may not have been in breach of.
I think looking at the list of entrants it should be a gentlemanly competition. All the names I recognise I have the greatest of respect for and know they are clean. I will look to these drivers to lead the way for some of the less experienced guys that may enter.

I don't know what port your using at the moment, but it's good for me.
I've had months of hassle getting my ISP to open certain ports for LFS, so if you do change it could you please make it one of the standard LFS ports or something in the 27000-27050 range, which is pretty unlikely to be blocked by ISP's as it's used for Counter Strike, which for some reason is still insanely popular:razz:

Not necesarily the case here moose as Tiscali customers are haveing big problems with gaming ports in general.
If GF uses any of the ports that Hosts such as Redline or Conedodgers are set up for then the problem is sorted ;)

Fair enough m8...that's Tiscali for you though I'm afraid, they are the worst ISP in the country..an utter disgrace of a company.
You can see the problem though...If they change the ports it could sort your problem out and screw it up for other ISP's customers. Traffic shaping is a complete nightmare.

Just wanted to write a very quick note to explain where I am with this and what I've got on my plate right now.
OK, the situation with this league is that all those who have signed up will get to vote on the day/time of the meets. I will set this up either thru the forum or possibly by PMs to you all.
The following things need to be completed before the first 'test' meet.
Day/Time Voting
Rule Book - I have so far got together with some of the lads and taken a load of replays of various on track situations. I need to go through these and pull the stuff out that is of use, convert it into AVI and create a document outlining acceptable and Unaceptable manouvres.
Forum - Create a forum in PHP that will house all the rules, pre/post race dicussions, results, standings, replays etc etc.
Track Guides - I would like to have these prepared ready for the events but this may not be possible. I have made good progress on the first guide though and this should be finished (in some sort of format at least) within the next couple of weeks. This will need to be added to the website too.
Judicial Procedures - these need to be defined and added to the website forum.
Formal Entries - once we have set a day/time for the events people can start entering the first one. The functionality for this will be added to my website too.
Other stuff outside of LFS.
Unfortunately for this week at least I will not be able to work on the LFS stuff very much at all. I quit my job recently and am now doing consultancy work for a seprate legal entity called Gentlefoot Limited. I have incorporated the company but I am now due to send out my first invoice for the last months consultancy and as yet do not have a bank account or any stationary so I need to get this stuff sorted asap.
In addition I have two people waiting for website builds and I really need to start bringing some stock in from China (stuff you boys might like - anything from RC helicopters/cars to windproof lighters) next month so it's all gone a bit mental. This is how this thing works. half the site is LFS resources - "Gentlefoot Lives For Speed" and the other half is my commercial side/products for sale = "Gentlefoot Lives" :) Oh and there has to be a whole separate website for my consultancy type work which is very specialist and something that none of you would be the remotest bit interested in.
So - I guess what I'm trying to say is please be patient. I am determined to see this through but as you can tell, I'm a busy boy right now :)

OK all I've just totalled up the votes for the day and time of the events and we have a clear winner from your 1st choices. I'm pretty glad about that, saves me having to total up 2nd and 3rd choices. :)
Option 11 has 9 votes and is a clear winner by 4 votes. Option 2 was the next closest.
So that means the Gentlefoot Formula Challenge will be held at 20:00 GMT on Sunday nights. That equates to 21:00 BST here in the UK.
I will schedule the events for the weeks between the OWRL events so we don't clash.
I will add this information to the forum which is now up and running. All entrants should go and register so I can contact you easier. Through the LFS PM system is a nightmare because I can only send to 5 recipients at a time. We have well over 40 entries now and climbing.

Had some good racing on FE Gold tonight with the dual class formula. Seems to work well although some FO8 drivers need to remember that they approach FOXs so fast that the FOXs don't see them coming.
In the GFC the onus will be on the driver behind to take responsibility and pass cleanly, regardless of what cars are involved.

GF has a point with the speed of the faster FO8's as us Fox drivers had under a 2 sec warning of the BLUE FLAG pop up at some parts of the track especially if the Fox was caught entering a slow corner due to the FO8 having better brakes and a faster corner speed.

Well the sever is always open for public racing. Difficulty is holding a long race without having formal entries - hence doing like this so that people have a couple of weeks to sign up.
But I'll surely be on FE Club for the next couple of weeks developing a set and practicing. I'm sure there'll be a few of us.

WR in FO8 is about 32 seconds so I have based my calculation for laps on that. This results in a 136 lap race. :)
This will mean lots of passing of back markers for the front runners so plenty of practice which is just what's needed in preparation for Season 1.

There's now only 1 guaranteed slot left for race 1. I will accept up to 10 reserves as there are usually several no shows. 7 failed to turn up last time from an entry list of 26. This grid will have 32 cars on it so I expect at least as many no shows as at FE Club.
