View Full Version : Final Test - Patch W
Scawen
31st March 2007, 14:53
Hello Test Patch Forum Readers! :)
The changes from V to V9 are good enough, important enough and well tested enough that we want to put them in our full version, so we've decided to put up a compatible patch W and full version W.
The idea is that everyone can use this new version which has better sounds and smoother graphics than version V, while we get on with the multiplayer-incompatible patch which we hope to finish in just a few weeks. That patch will allow more racers online (probably 24) and more spectators, and various other planned updates for it as well (though no physics changes in that first one).
Before releasing today's patch W in full public view, and while we are getting the auto updater and the full version ready, it seems like a good idea to let you have it here first and that will be one final test before it goes live.
Changes from V to W :
Sound :
Included new default car sounds created by DaveWS
Engine sounds automatically switch to new defaults
No need to type edit_eng before using sound editor
Distortion is constant regardless of volume setting
New PACK button in sound editor to load a sound pack
TV camera and SHIFT+U avoid skid / wind volume boost
SKid and wind volumes are 33% louder for all settings
2D Display :
Improved small map car pointers
Improved needles and markers on clocks
Slightly more efficient 2d graphics drawing
Driver names appeared too late when using wide FOV
User LOD defaults to 0.8 (higher than old versions)
Reduced width of lag meter (see more with ctrl+shift)
Cars one lap behind are now shown in grey on small map
FIX : Wide screen autocross object selection buttons
FIX : Invisible warning when wrong way reversing
Graphics :
Higher resolution image in mirrors
Higher level of detail available in main view
LOD is no longer reduced with fov over 90 degrees
Removed unecessary LOD checks on most scenery
Removed option "Wider screen increases LOD"
Removed option "All scenery at maximum LOD"
Interface :
Selected setup is displayed in F12 menu
Another small reduction in pit-out glitch
ESC now closes live suspension view and sound editor
HOME key now works correctly in single player replays
ESC in game setup screen now exits to entry screen
SHIFT+O in main entry screen now goes to options
CTRL+S saves a screen shot to the shots folder
Setups can be sorted by name as well as date
Any resolution as wide as 3:1 is considered 3 screen
FIX : Default sound selected when deleting a colour
FIX : Mouse cursor is now visible on window border
FIX : Small renaming bug when saving replays
Multiplayer :
Some improvements to the ? info system in List of Games
LFS S1 / S2 hosts can now store up to 400 banned users
Admins can now use in-game : /laps /qual /hours /wind
New InSim packets (pit - penalty - take over - flags)
Join specific game - colours are removed from name
New option /adminslots=X reserves slots for admins
FIX : MsgOutPack (MSO) now shows long user messages
FIX : Wrong delay "setup changes" after tyre change
Views :
View options now visible before you go on track
Separate FOV stored for each car's custom view
Separate steer look option for each custom view
Improved options for follow view (chase cam)
View screen rearranged to make more sense
Misc :
New language included : Slovenian / Slovenski
Game setup screen stats : join - pit - spectate
Unlocks now increased every Friday instead of monthly
Master port is now selectable in cfg.txt (29339 or 8080)
Set log file name /log=name.xxx or /log to stop logging
FIX : Unlocking issue with AMD Athlon 64
FIX : Unlocking issue with Cedega
INSTALLATION :
1) Move or save the patch into your main LFS folder
2) Double click the patch to extract it to that folder
3) When you see "Confirm File Replace" select "Yes to All"
4) Now you can start LFS in the normal way

These last few patches have made LFS a lot smoother for me. Haven't had any problems. I'm glad we're getting to an official patch W already as i think it has great improvements which will give new users an even better first impression. Thanks Scawen :)
You're probably not going to answer this, but I just have to ask, will there be any updates from Eric in the next incompatible patch? :shy:

Where does it say LFS gave you that? You just have a trojan which get's active once you download something or whatever. I haven't gotten a virus in over 5 years, and an LFS patch is the last thing I expect getting a virus from. Clean up your system.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the patch hasn't even been posted on the LFS homepage, and I don't see a download for patch W on gamershell.
Maybe you're talking about the patch V download?

Well, tough. You're just not gonna get them because the sound engine has made a step forward. There is no way that for one person (most people are happy with the changes), Scawen will reverse the patch. Suck it up. Life can be a bitch (and it gets much worse than getting an LFS sound patch that's made a step backwards in your eyes), the sooner you learn that, the better. It's not like LFS will sound like this forever anyway.

Live For Speed, and any of it's patches, do not have viruses in them. I've downloaded pretty much everything from the devs, and never had a problem. Gamershell (Gamers Heel) doesn't give people viruses either - they are too well known to allow trojans in their downloads.
I suspect you've been looking at monkey porn again, and got a virus from that!

Dunno where/how I lost 15fps from v8-v9, anyone see where they went to?
I even went LOD to 0.5, still not lost em. damn :( Wrong thread :x
Testing W now.....
edit:
W patch is no better unfortunately. I get 30-60fps LOD 0.4 on W, when I used to get 45-60fps LOD 0.85 on V8. All my other settings are the same. AA=2
Dynamic LOD reduction 1.0
Dust 1.0
Mirrors 0.2
Shadow : low res
Wheels/Trees/Flags/Rubber : Main
Just a huge 15 FPS drop (33% loss). Seems to be massivley affected by Layouts and multiplayer. I understand My GPU is sorta oldish - but I have a huge drop here (when V8 was running nicely) and I must now run LFS at 0.2 LOD and that looks quite bad. Quite a few in Multiplayer players report the same large drops is FPS but most wont post here.

Until now noone has been able to establish that an LFS patch downloaded from any official mirror has a virus so there isn't anything wrong with the devs' choices.
And once again, patch W is only hosted on liveforspeed.net.......

Oh, enough already. Chances are it was something else. The devs have a very strict policy regarding mirrors, I recall contacting Victor about an SA mirror and he said that he wouldn't put it on the main site because it required you to register. Filefront is not better either. The general idea is to have as many mirrors as possible, if someone offers a good mirror, the devs would obviously accept the offer and link it on the main site.

Brikkahits because some firewalls detect its a newer exe, and that it might be malicious, so it might pop up and say something when it tries to connect to the net, so LFS leaves full screen mode just in case

If you have netguard or PC guard, then for some reason the LFS patch is recognised as a W32 worm. Its up to the devs to sort out why that is, but they'll have to contact the company involved.

That's not really how virus scanners work... There is something in the code of the downloaded patch that matches a virus signature in net/pcguards database. That is all.
Scoobyrbac - just turn your virus scanner off and allow the autoupdater to get on with it. Its a pain in the arse, but its not a virus.

Is anyone else amazed by how different Patch W feels to V?
I've not bothered with any of the V test patches because I've not played LFS in earnest for a while so this is my first experience of the sound/graphics changes. First off, all the cars I've driven so far sound good (ok, that totals the XFG and the UF1, but meh), will have to check out the others soon. The biggest change, however, appears to be the graphics. Not the actual appearance there of but...something...else.
I can't quite put my finger on it but everything feels very different graphically. At first I couldn't drive at all and didn't like it one bit. Now I've gotten used to the smoothness LFS genuinely feels a lot more exciting. If only I could explain why...
Anyways, good work guys. Very pleased so far. Can't wait for the next patch!

I think I have found a problem. I was on Fern Bay Gold in a UF1, race started, everything is fine, then I got the "Warning traffic approching" graphic...yet I was not a lap behind, and no one within 10 seconds was behind me. It lasted for about one lap, then left. During that time, I never crashed, spun or left the track; just a normal lap.

jayhawk, that is not related to patch W. I believe Becky can explain it in further detail. :shy:

I found a strange "feature"; when you exit the multiplayer server list by clicking on "back", instead of straightly teleporting to the "show server list/new server/etc"-menu, there is a 1 frame flash of an empty screen (i.e. only the background visible and no graphics over it). Is this related to the "Closing 1 connect" screen that sometimes pops up at the same point? I remember the older versions just went back to the multiplayer menu without flashing the background for a frame.
Hope you understand what I mean ;)

I had the traffic approaching sign too. It was a 3 player race on SO Town with UF1000. I just spun. The others were right behind; I waited till they passed; had problem starting.. so was 2-3 seconds before getting away. There was no one else behind me; I took off; then the traffic graphic popped up. It only lasted a few seconds. It shouldn't have come up (or should've come up when I spun). Either way; its not operating correctly. Just so you know. :)

The "Traffic Approaching" message is not a LFS bug - this message is not produced by LFS. It's the STCC InSim software sending a message to you, probably it is a bug in that. Anyway, it would be best to make a note of it in the STCC sub forum in the leagues section.

First of all thanks for the new patch i think that it really means progress. Although i feel i must say something about those sounds, engine sounds.
I must say that some of them sounds really nice, some others all really crap, its only the truth. For instance the F1 car, that can only be a bad taste joke, the car simply sounds crippy, starts to sturtter at high speed, i would like to see that explained. All turbo's, dont have turbo?!?! In FXO/RB4/XRT you can't hear the turbo's, thats non sense to say the least.
The FZ5 sounds worst then my 1300w vacuum cleaner, seriously. The FOX well, needle is showing redline but it sounds like we're still half way through the revs, no pitch, no high pitch on formulas in a general way.
Strangely its not all bad, some cars sounds great, not much of them but some. I don't understand how can ppl praise so much for this sounds when the package has serious flaws. Also strange is how can some sounds fit so good and others so bad, almost horrible. Its also like some of the cars have been neglected.
I respect both devs and Dave's work around this subject, the sounds issue is for a long time now being a major reason of discontentment within the community, but come on!!! Did you guys heared all the sounds some times before releasing them??
I understand that i might not colect many supporters on this, some might think that i'm a flammer or something, but thats not my intentions. I just want a better and better LFS for all of us, my statement was more then overthough and hopefully will be considered.
Regards

Please consider that the sound system has been completely reworked starting with patch V, and more improvements will come.
That's why Scawen said Dave did so well within the limitations of the current sound engine.
I can't really see what's to complain about the new sounds. No they're not perfect yet, but for a long time the sounds did not get any improvements, and now they are getting attention. Noone ever said these are the final sounds, after all LFS is a work in progress. Compared to the previous default sounds I think they're a HUGE step forward. The sounds Dave and others have managed to get out of the current engine have made me a firm believer in the new sound system. Imagine what will be possible when Scawen works on the engine some more. IMO the engine sounds in LFS have never been this good, so that makes me confident about this feature.

Interesting.
I can hear the turbochargers aplenty on the TBO class, so I wonder why you can't... You can always turn it up on your own version...

Mate understand something, i play LFS for almost 3 years now, i love the sim and the dev team and know all the bla bla you talked about. I also consider that the new engine sound its a real upgrade to previous system.
But you speech its on the defense, and i'm not attacking, so you can drop your guards, just listen well to the cars i have refered and them tell your opinion again.
Problably since the devs option went to use sounds moded by the community, they could/should gather some more packs and find the best sound for each car on their opinion and make a small upgrade.

 I am not saying you're attacking at all, and I don't have any guards to drop. I think you're just easily offended. I'm just stating that sometimes people tend to think anything new is going to be the final version. Did you follow the thread on the patch V sounds? countless remarks on vacuum cleaners. Read that and you'll know what I mean.
If you know so much about LFS and know all the blabla, maybe you could have expected that sort of response? And maybe you could have provided your feedback on Dave's sound when they were first introduced? Just asking if people have even listened to the sounds before including them is just a pointless remark, as you know what the answer to your own question is.
Problably since the devs option went to use sounds moded by the community, they could/should gather some more packs and find the best sound for each car on their opinion and make a small upgrade.
I think it's better to stick to Dave's sounds. Otherwise we'll maybe end up with 10 different "official" pack creators. Besides Dave has something to build on now.
And actually there should be no problem with the sounds for you, as we have a sound editor now, so you can make them exactly the way you think they should be.

Hi the Patch is great but there is one thing i noticed when playing online when driving and in ym rear view mirir a car quite far back well not far viewable to see there driver, the cars bumper comes all solid with no gaps and so the whole body of the car becomes like an oval, is it just me?
I will try get a pic so you understand what i mean

Jesus, it's your native language and i barely understood what you mean...
But since you mentioned this, i also had this the other day, it wasn't patch W, it was Test Patch V9 or V8, not sure. I didn't see cars in my rear mirror, but they were very close on the map, and i could see them when looking behind me, they were like 40, 50 metters behind me, but they didn't show up on the main mirror. Only noticed this once... It was on a straight of BL rev if that helps.

Sometimes only the headlights disappear, other time the cars behind you look like a shoe, if they have no skin.

Something to do with your LOD reduction. Try "Mirror LOD" and "Dynamic LOD Reduction". Change them around

.....
I found the problem...... With all my messing around and testing I had actually turn OFF Multiplayer speedup option. I enabled it again and everything was back to normal. :thumb: Sorry for any confusion or hassles.
I double posted this because I double reported the problem. Sheesh:schwitz:
