View Full Version : TEST Patch V6 (now V9) compatible with V

Scawen
28th March 2007, 18:06
Hello Racers! Here is a new fully compatible Test Patch, V9. A new crash bug that was introduced in V6 needed to be fixed, along with another old crash bug also found by hackerx! :) Also there is one new long-requested feature - the cars which are more than one lap behind you are now drawn in grey on the small map, so you know if the car behind you is fighting for position (orange) or not (grey). V6 really seemed to cured the hanging and freezing for most people and resulted in smoother frame rates than ever.

The changes from V to V9 are all listed below in this post. Some of the changes (like the unlocking fixes which were in V2) are very important to some people. Many people will like some of the other improvements, even though there are no physics changes or any major multiplayer changes (which we do hope to release in the near future). In particular I think most people will be happy that we are now using DaveWS's sounds as the default sounds! Thank you Dave! :)

There are also various minor graphical improvements and several new InSim packets which will be helpful for people developing race management systems. Hosts will also be happy with the new option /adminslots which reserves connection slots for administrators.

LFS S2 has now diverged into two versions, a compatible version and a non-compatible version. As we continue to develop the incompatible version, I may copy some compatible changes into the compatible version so they get well tested and you get a few updates - and any important issues get fixed.

This thread is for feedback about the test patch. We need to know if you find any problems. Please do not make feature requests on this thread. Thank you! :)

I dont intend for this topic to continue, but I was asked if I was sure disabling Vsync lowered FPS. I tested again. Yes it does cause a huge drop, but only if Adaptive Anti Aisling is enabled. Great work, downloading V6 now.

Hello, I still (with V6) have a problem with disapearing content of the mirrors described here (http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=369241#post369241). The mirrors appears again, when I leave the shift-U mode.

Car details look much better! Awesome! I didn't notice any hood pins disappearing. Had everything maxed out and all sliders to the far right.

I was playing around with the Vsync and I'll have to double check and test with from FRAPS numbers and replays but I was getting low frame rates with it turned off, and constant with it enabled?!

When I am getting 75 with it enabled, I should certainly not get lower frame rate by turning it off.

Keep up the great work!

Crash on BL1r going to Shift-U - No layout (clear Day) Single Player

I was driving around and noticed the shadow behind the car flickering. So I stopped and took a closer look...
27351 27352
27353 - My View Options
32 bit 1680 x 1024 AA-2 AF-Application managed. System specs in my signature.

However, when the shadow was clipped - I pressed Shift-U for a closer look. LFS closed instantly! BANG! No error messages. Shift U works fine when in the first picture. I can even drive over the clipping spot IN Shift-U mode with no problems. It's when I hit Shift-U right when the shadow is clipped LFS goes bye bye. These shadow clipping spots exist all the way around the track. Every 5 meters or so, depending on the incline of the track. (Flatter ground = more clipping spots) Sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology.

Tested using Hi-res textures and default textures, same problem. I tested it in highest LFS LODs I could select.

I tested this again in V5. The shadow still gets clipped - but shift-U does not cause a crash to LFS:
27354

EDIT: The crash did not occur if I disabled Vsync.
EDIT: Correction Its happening with Vsync off or on.
It DOESNT happen when I use Shift-U from In-Car Cam. It happens when using external views. It happens on th start line after a shift-R, in Chase view BL1r without fail.

Was on BL1 with layout, pressed shift + U and LFS crashed, address: 0x000000000041dd13.Thank you. Your crash address showed me axactly which line it was. The crash was an integer divide by zero and it's a very simple fix to avoid that. It was related to LOD so doesn't affect anything else.

It's not reproducable 100% because you must happen be in just the right spot as you enter SHIFT+U mode.

The shadow clipping you see can come up if the track is aligned along the x or y axis and the sun is a bit low in the sky. LFS doesn't realise that the next track segment is in the shadow, because it's out of its physics range.

Thanks Scawen - I drove around and looked for some other shadow clipping spots to try force a crash - but they all did not produce the crash when I hit Shift-U . So I got confused what was causing the crash. Your post has made that a little clearer. Dunno If the shadow fickering happened Pre V5. Guess if it was, I wasn't noticing it. It doesnt happen on all tracks all the time. Eg: I cannot get the Shadow to clip on FE Black.
Thanks again - best game eva !

Not latest test patch but maybe helpful... LFS 0.5V2, windowed (at the moment of crash it was hidden under other windows), shift+U mode, connected to LFS director, playing replay of race on FE4R. Crash address: 0x00000000004aa9b2.Thanks for this crash address as well, I have now tracked this down and removed it. It was in some very old code that produced values that were not even used any more. So that's cleaned up now along with some other related old variables.

Hmm..
This is rather funny because I haven't seen anyone mentioning stuttering of frames and sound with V6.
However I have this problem on two different pc's since the upgrade from V5 -> V6.

System1; AMD athlon 64 3400+ and ATI 9800PRO
System2; AMD athlon 64 3200+ and ATI 9600XT

System2 is effected the most and you can spot some short delays in just a few seconds. The FPS however stay in the 75-85 range.

With system1 it's not so obvious, so maybe 1 min. it runs as it should but there are some definate, short delays in both sound and frames once in a while. The FPS however is in the 95-110 range. Vsync on, 93Hz, doesn't help.

I have used all the testpatches from V1 up to V6 with no problems. Before V6 LFS ran a smooth as possible on both pc's as you would expect from such FPS.

I know this won't be able to help you with something concrete. But I just thought I should let you know.

(All these observations have been made in single player mode)

Not often i post in here, if at all really, but some things i noticed that are in my eyes not correct.

on the fuel gauge we have the new little icon, very nice addition but on the left and right of that there is a '0' and a '1' wouldnt it be more correct to have it as 'E' and 'F'.

and how hard would it be to make this icon turn orange lets say when it gets less than 5% fuel left in tank ;)

Scawen, what is the new line "Refresh"? A noun, or a verb as imperative?

Scawen
29th March 2007, 15:46
It's a command, I guess that means an imperative verb.

The new "Refresh" with a capital letter is just the same as the old "refresh" with a small letter. But this new one is for refreshing the host information after you have pressed the ? button in list of games.

Could be antivirus software too, I have found Panda and F-Secure at least being quite irritating with .exe archives, they broke them or freeze your system or just lock files and anything like that, really bad antivirus software and in case of F-secure it is not enough if you turn it off, only uninstalling will stop it messing with files.

Mine is 2.08 MB (2 189 296 bytes) and size on disk is 2.09 MB (2 195 456 bytes), this is for V8 patch. Certainly it looks like that something has snipped few kb from your file.

Try to turn off your antivirus and download + install again.

7-Zip troubles should indeed be in own thread.

I´ve experienced the same pop up issue as GeForz. (http://www.lfsforum.net/member.php?u=1480)

I´ve never had such pop ups in LFS running 1280x1024, 4xAA, 16xAF, maximum detail + hires skies and hires texture pack except one pop up that always appears: Crossing the finishing line at Blackwood the tribune beside the first chicane is always drawn visibly, no matter what level of detail.

The hires mirrors add is a tiny but great innovation!

so far so good to me as well! Haven't experienced any hangs on V8 and the fps really do seem to be smoother now. Thanks for your hard work!

Thanks! I'm pleased it's smoother for most people! :)

I've just uploaded V9 which has two fixes (one small and one big) and more updated translations.

1) If a host was full but still had admin slots free, the full filter did not filter it out in List of Games.

2) Hosts could only store up to 88 bans and if a ban file with more than 88 (created in an external editor) was loaded, LFS would crash. The limit is now 400 banned users and there will be no crash if that limit is exceeded.

FE Black - Main Pitlane - Towards endline (of pits)

Looking back makes my fps drop from 40-60 to 15.

Attached replay if you need it. (wait till I get the LX6 - that's when I see it)

edit: Same happens in XFR.

edit2: Another bug which has been there a long time: If in custom view (for example passenger seat) and you look (w, e) towards the driver the dials lock.

this fps loss when looking back happends to me very often if theres some layout on the track (but it`s been like that forever i think)

Rewinding please Scawen! Hehe, such a simple little tool, that will please alot of us. V9 is working good for me, though i've lost a little FPS. From V8, that is.

I'm also getting some FPS loss when looking back. It happened e.g. at Kyoto National at the end of the pitlane. The host (STCC) was using a layout, so this could be the cause. Don't know if it's a new problem though.

I would think that it takes a lot of work to actually make that, so it would be reasonable to do same time when user interface is added, one that is easy to hide and bring back, which has jog wheel that you turn by grabbing mouse and when you release it pauses, like in Viper Racing that still has best replay system around...

But I would imagine these are not going to happen very quickly and also perhaps patch thread is not for discussing from such things.

EDIT:Oh yes, when I'm on server in spectate mode that is running BL1 and there is only one car that hits esc and then chooses to go to garage my FPS will drop to near 40 or even below as camera is viewing grid without cars, even normally they are 60 and won't change no matter what.

The reason why I posted it, is because I'd never experienced it before.

The looking-back-FPS-loss (pronounced when layout is loaded, I think) is in LFS since ages. Nothing to do with any of the test patches, not even with patch V itself.

So why do I experience it since I updated from V2 to V6?

Another couple of lockups with sound loops, other apps were OK in the background as I still had voice comms. Was online with the FXO at Westhill (std version). No event viewer errors, patch V9.
Temps are fine (GPU 41C), XP SP2, X850XT PE with catalyst 7.2

I had totally missed this whole DaveWS soundpack thing and woah... When the patch V sound editor was revealed I honestly didn't believe that it could make such a huge difference in a compatible patch. Great choice from the devs to officially include Dave's sounds. Tells something that now I had to listen the sounds through crappy 10 cm speakers with 5 fps (because had to use my "secondary" computer, power supply R.I.P.) so I couldn't even get the best out of them yet. :) I think I'm gonna finally give up with CSR.

scawen, i was just wondering, could u add another option to the "small map display", it really helps that cars behind u more then 1 lap are in grey, but for masters of endurance and such races, it would be nice to have a car that is more then 1 lap in front of you in let's say red, or which ever color... so if u are catching up (car in front is probably gonna pit or something, if it's slowed down) so u dont force an overtake.. just an idea.

Scawen, I also still get black screen bugs, but only if I change my monitor setup from Dual View (Treated as 2 seperate monitors) to Horizontal Span (Treated as 1 large monitor), using latest nVidia drivers, and V0, but has happened since I got my dual monitor setup.

Hey Scawen, at first... Sorry for my bad english! :)

Since the new Testpatch V6< have a friend a problem with Teamspeak2!
He is in Teamspeak, talk with me, but if he started LFS it sweep from him side... If he close LFS and restart Teamspeak... It is normally. In other games isn`t this problem.

His PC:
AMD Sempron 3000+
GeForce 7600GT
DDR2 512mb

We think it is a bug!

Can you remember some more information about it, like what track you were on, if it was single player, multiplayer, and exactly how you closed down LFS, and at what point the crash came... any other info you can think of.
been driving rac on ky2, multiplayer. left server, clicked on exit, crash. i might been a bit fast, like nearly clicking the buttons all together.

All test patches have worked just fine with my 56k dialup. Ran last night and only timed out once attempting to grab a skin while sitting in spectate (which is to be expected on 56k).
