View Full Version : TEST Patch V3 (compatible with V)
Scawen
23rd March 2007, 17:21
Hello Racers! Here is a new fully compatible Test Patch, V3.
The changes are all listed below in this post. Some of the changes (like the unlocking fixes which were in V2) are very important to some people. Many people will like some of the other improvements, even though there are no physics changes or any major multiplayer changes (which we do hope to release in the near future). In particular I think most people will be happy that we are now using DaveWS's sounds as the default sounds! Thank you Dave! :)
There are also various minor graphical improvements and several new InSim packets which will be helpful for people developing race management systems. Hosts will also be happy with the new option /adminslots which reserves connection slots for administrators.
LFS S2 has now diverged into two versions, a compatible version and a non-compatible version. As we continue to develop the incompatible version, I may copy some compatible changes into the compatible version so they get well tested and you get a few updates - and any important issues get fixed.
This thread is for feedback about the test patch. We need to know if you find any problems. Please do not make feature requests on this thread. Thank you! :)

I thought i'd add if any of you are using my sounds from this forum, if you want to use the new default sounds you have to click the "PACK" button in the shift-a editor, and type "default", as I have made some more updates to them. :thumb: Nice work too Scawen :D.

Actually got quite a good boost in FPS on some places of the track :thumb: so good work there but watching a replay that was recorded with V2, it went out of sync. I've attached that (please ignore my shocking tyre warming abilities, it goes OOS just by the pit entry).
On another note, the new dials look a lot less arcadey than before, when we have faces for them it will make a huge difference to interiors. :)
EDIT: The OOS only happens on SPRs from what I've tried so far. Some get it sooner, some later.

The same for me at the second try. Also my pc rebooted the first time while loading a spr. It saved a minidump. I can provide more details and the dmp file if needed.

I confirm that there is a SPR OOS and I can reproduce that on some hotlap replays.
I'll look this evening to see if I can get rid of that OOS without losing any of the new features. I can already get back to no OOS by rolling back one source code file - but I don't want to do that as it has important changes for the new InSim features. Anyway it should be possible to fix.
For now, please do not upload hotlaps made with V3.

In widescreen mode the names over cars disappear in a very short distance. They don't appear at all on the above view. They are OK in-car.

I run LFS in windowed mode, the mirror mode is set to "all". Now, In "shift-U" mode I see mirrors, as expected (the first attachement shows it). If I switch to another window (LFS is not minimized) and back to LFS, then mirrors get black (the second attachement). If I go to menu and back, then mirrors are back to normal.
I have Windows 98SE, nvidia GF 4200 Ti, driver 4.14.10.4523.

Yes. :thumb: Although there are also new gear whine and shift sounds, with no copyright issues, but you may prefer the old shift and gear whine sounds which I used before this. I shouldn't think so though. :shy:

All settings are fine... from what I can see, unless something changes to another value when the patch is applied? And I'm fairly sure I haven't forgotten how to drive overnight and I can't catch one in ten slides. I'm not one to normally scream "OMG, the patch has physics changes" but
considering the circumstances...

My wild guess would be that the new sounds are causing that. You don't get the same audible cues so you miss the slides.

Been using Dave's sounds for a while, they're virtually the same.
Right now I would put £50 on it that there have been physics changes (possibly confined to single player). Any takers?

Haven't loaded LFS in nearly a month, but just tested the LX4 at SO Town (I think I'm about your skill level/speed), and all is fine and dandy for me - controlled slides and accurate apexs aplenty.

Names over cars doesn't work for the active car if you use the Bird cam.
When you switch to another car, and chose a camera attached to this car, you can't see the name over it (tested only online atm). The names over the cars work only when I'm watching from a TV camera (the ones "mounted" on the track), or watching another car.
I often used to watch replays to analyze who caused a crash for example, but now its not really possible to see who is who, unless they are using different skins or you press pause and find out by using the buttons in the connection list.
In addition to that, i STILL think the names are hided to early, they should be visible for like 2 or 3 times the distance.
EDIT:
This is caused because the view distance is to high that the name over the car is hidden :D
Using 100FOV here.

hi,
i've got some "problems" with the sounds of DaveWS's soundpack (and now in the official version V3)... they are too loud for me and i cant hear my tires loud enough. i tried to change it in the sound options, but if i lower the car volume, and leave the tire sound at the maximum, the tire sound gets lower, too. Would it be possible to fix this anyhow, so that i can hear the tires loud and clear ?
but all in all, again great work, thx :thumb:

I've been on a few race servers with the patch and have noticed what looks almost like lag. The cars on the track will jump around a little almost like lag. Also, almost no one's ping stayed under 0.10 for more than half a second (except for maybe 1 person, who I think had V3). I don't think I'm lagging and just wanted confirmation from someone else who has also noticed it as it seems to be an OOS problem.

Although tonight I notice more connections problems to the server than usual.
Either it takes a long time before the player can finally join and some regulars are losing connection during the race whilst they usually don't.
Server is still running on V patch. This doesn't prove anything though, but two players complained about having connection problems due to V3, claiming they didn't have these troubles with previous patch (V or V2).

If you do get lower frame rate :
The LOD used to be related to screen size.
Now it is not any more, and the LOD is set very high. Your LFS is probably drawing cars at too high a resolution.
You should now turn down the LOD, and it will reduce the LOD of cars in the distance but not really have any effect on the scenery.
Maybe the LOD setting should now start lower than 1 by default.

After EVERY patch we get the same thing. Lots of people moaning of a drop in FPS, more lag and physics changes etc etc etc. Im sure it would help Scawen alot if people used their loaf before making lots of posts like this. For example notice how things are different over a longer time period.
I've just spent about an hour on Redline Racing and some time offline and I can say Ive noticed no FPS drop and no extra lag when online.

Edit: After re-reading sounds like Im moaning just thought I'd clarify its posted with good intentions :)

I think the main problem is, that people don't test what the FPS difference really is. If you want to check the FPS, you can e.g. use Fraps which will show your average FPS. You can load a replay with the old LFS.exe and the new one and will see exactly if/how the FPS changes.
If you post those average FPS numbers together with your system config it may help to track down the cause. But just saying "LFS runs slower now" doesn't help much.

Found a bug with the live lap changes....
Started a race of two laps, got onto the second lap then changed the race distance to one lap. Now i cant finish the race. Maybe some kind of check needs to be put in place so that the laps set cant be lower then the current lap the leader is on?
Also, whilst im on about lengths of races. is it possible to implement a /mins on top of the /hours race length?

S14 - this is not a feature request thread. If I have changed the clutch then please comment on it.
This is a compatible patch - that means, no multiplayer or physics changes. There will be a multiplayer incompatible patch with the same physics and then after that there will be a physics patch. It will happen quicker if you don't waste my time, telling you the test patch forum rules.

Sometimes on high echo settings there will be slight clipping, but the sounds should be on the limit in terms of the volume they can go.
I am fully aware of the looping of the gear whine, however the whine had to be extracted somehow from an onboard video (to avoid copyright issues), so one of the several problems was getting it to loop nicely. That was the 281441 attempt at it, and although far from perfect still, I am pleased enough with it.
