question about sound

we all know by now that the sound is generated by lfs, my question is if the sound is being processed by the cpu, the sound card or both :P disabling sound with shift+n gives a wooping fps boost but with obvious downsides :D
i was just wondering if anyone knows a bit more about this that can enlighten a poor fps hunter :shrug:

Most of the computation is still done by the cpu. Sorry I don't know more.
