View Full Version : What is your game controller?

With what do you drive cars in LFS? Keyboard, keyboard + mouse, FF steering wheel, game pad? I drive with Kb+mouse.
Certainly, I can't be fast as guys with wheel, because I can only go with 100% throttle. That means that in corners I could go only with full throttle (then I risk spinning with RWD cars) or throttle off (I'm much slower). In your opinion, how much time do I lose per lap compared with wheel guys, let's say on Blackwood track with Fox? :)

You will find that 95% of LFS drivers use a wheel because it's the best way to experience the game. When I first bought LFS I used keyboard for about 3-4 months. When I eventually went out and bought a wheel I have never looked bnack, love it soo much :)

Started off with keyboard back then when there's this "keyboard steer assist" thing going on.
Then I bought my first wheel, Logitech Wingman FF GP, but broke the throttle pedal after a year, didn't bother too much to fix it, so I immediately bought another second handed Momo Racing.
my wheel is my most precious "toy", I can't imagine losing it... lol

Ditto.
Though I was a long time mouse driver in the times of the test demo and S1. Then december 2003 I got my first wheel, a black momo. What a changed experience :D

Do you think I lose great deal of time per lap with my combo?

That depends on how important throttle control is for a particular car, and how quick you can click.
In the UF1/XFG/XRG, it's possible to get WR times. As the power goes up, it gets harder. Suffice to say were you to drive the FO8 you're going to struggle to keep up with average racers (unless you only race the oval). That's the two extremes, other cars will fall somewhere between.
You do have the benefit of mouse steering, while lacking in precision it makes for very quick countersteering, which can be used to somewhat make up for the digital throttle.

I use mouse as steering wheel, but "W" for throttle, "S" - brake, "A" shift down, "D" shift up. No clicking for me :D

Started with an old school mouse... but it got worn and didn't always respond, so I upgraded to a $30 optical mouse... lol. Then about 5 months after that I got my black Momo racing wheel which I still use 2 years later :)

Black MOMO. Now that I have used to play with a wheel even the idea of playing a driving game with kb/mouse sounds so weird. :)

MicroSoft Sidewinder with FF.
It's a real peice of work. No plastic feeling. Feels great.
Oh and btw. It's like hitting the programmers in the face as I see it not to use a wheel. :)

I use keyb+mouse when I need to drive at my best.
Ctrllr setup:
Keyb
A/Z: gas/brake
X: clutch
W/E: Look left/rite
Mouse
LMB/RMB: shift up/down
And I'm still practising to get the same sort of times with my Momo Racing Force Pro :P

I Was using a Logitec rumblepad and thought driving was difficult. I recently upgraded to a Logitec DFP and boy, do i have a lot to learn. At times its fun , its even rewarding when things are going good. When things are bad its frustraing as hell tring to get use to this wheel.

It does take some getting use to. Its well worth it. It adds so much more to the game.

I used to have a Thrustmaster Modena for 2 years, then LFS came and I noticed the wheelsī limitations ;)
Next one was one of the last MS Sidewinder FF, almost sold out at that time, and I didnīt want to risk the Momo Racing pedal bug ;)
The Sidewinder was quite ok, but soon (after 3 months) the rubber started to peel off the wheel and it went sticky...
I needed to get something new.
Now I found a nice red Momo for a reasonable price at ebay :)

I would ALWAYS strongly recommend a FF wheel for LFS :)
If you donīt use one, you miss one of the best features of LFS :)

Plus there's the added benefit of not having to work out any more. A few hours a day with FF on high and you will end up looking like Popeye.

up until last night i was using a black momo.
But then disaster struck...the throttle gave only 80% max for the 5th time in a year.
I thought "agh not again, damn pedals"..and started opening them up, put the pot back intoplace, cleaned out the cobwebs(yes there was really a spider living inside my pedals :really: ) and put them back together.
To no avail though..this time the pot seems to have gone totally nuts, input jumps from 0 to 100 or anything inbetween randomly.
opened the damn pedals up 3times yesterday but nothing :(
So now im runnig off to the shop and will buy myself a DFP . looked at the "cheap" brd pedals first..but 250 for 2toy pedals is a bit over the top imho.
Lets hope i will <3 my DFP as much as everyone here :)

I use mouse. It is not as bad as you might think. Practice is more important than your controller.
I use MRT5 99% of the time without any asistance of any kind (even manual clutch) and managed 1:24.97 on BL1.

Logitech Formula Force GP Wheel + Combined Pedals. I can't see this game being any fun whatsoever with keyb+mouse or gamepads, in fact I cant see any racing game being fun without a steering wheel/pedals!
My setup cost Ģ50. It's well worth it if you love racing and racing games, or just want to enjoy your purchases in their full glory.
